Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars South African "jive" and other rare music.......2001-08-13

An outstanding collection of rare early South African pop, including some classic swing-flavored "jive" tunes and "kwela" (pennywhistle) tunes. This disc spans from 1939 to 1981, and includes early work by later well-known bands such as the Mahotella Queens (in 1967!), but it's the 'Fifties-era jive stuff that makes this special. It's hard to find and out of fashion, but really, really catchy! Highly recommended album with generous amounts of music and informative liner notes.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Essential in the history of jazz.......2003-11-06

Chris McGregor, a white man, and five black men produced eminently listenable jazz--accurately dubbed "Township Bop"--way back in 1964, when such music, produced by an integrated band, was thought to be "inappropriate" for segregated South Africa. Indeed, The Blue Notes, despite being perhaps the most loved of all South African groups of that benighted era, were forced to leave their beloved country and take up residency in England.

And what a group it was! McGregor, the leader, was perhaps the least notable of the members of this stellar band, all of whom (save Nick Moyake) went on to have brilliant solo careers. Dudu Pukwana, alto sax, made many fine records of township jazz. Johnny Dyani, before his untimely death, was a leading figure on the British jazz scene and recorded some remarkable albums for Steeplechase (esp. Witchdoctor's Son, Afrika, and Angolian Cry). Louis Moholo (drums) was perhaps the biggest star of this outfit, becoming a leading light of the European free jazz scene, and a bandleader of note (check out his brilliant discs on Ogun, Viva la Black Exile and Freedom Tour) as well as recording several fine sessions with Evan Parker (esp. Bush Fire, also Ogun).

Even as far back as 1964, you could tell there was something special about this group--a raw energy, a new take on an original American art form filtered throught all the hardship and oppression that was South Africa under Apartheid.

Township Bop is certainly worth owning, and you might also want to check out the Blue Notes Ogun disc (unfortunately not available on Amazon) Live in South Africa in 1964. Also on Ogun featuring expat South Africans Henry Beckett, Claude Deppa, and Mark Charig are the two fine Dedication Orchestra big band outings from the early 1990's, Spirits Rejoice and Ixesha. Also, check out Chris McGregor's big band, Brotherhood of Breath.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely enthralling!.......2006-06-03

I seldom write reviews for Amazon because I don't have a lot of time, but this CD is one of the best I've heard in the past several years. I've enjoyed every single track--for me it's definitely the best of the 30 Rough Guide collections I've heard to date. Fifteen years ago, listening to a program about "African music" on NPR I started chasing what I'd heard -- and now I know it was South African. Reminds me a bit of modern Brazilian jazz. My ears are reveling in all these sounds and beats. I want more!

3 out of 5 stars file under 'easy listening'.......2003-09-09

i made the mistake of thinking that this would be african music, but every time i play i swear it i swear it's just another jazz festival gathering. i am absolutely certain that there are more South African jazz musicians with character than are represented here. i would say if you like jazz, then sure, but if you're looking for good African music, check out the rough guides to Senegal & Gambia, Cape Verde (sweet!! bluesy and jazzy), or Music of Africa.

5 out of 5 stars More Good stuff from S/A.......2003-05-02

Strictly speaking, this Cd isn't just S/A jazz but what is commonly known as "Township Jive, " the Jazz and R&B flavored music of South Africa's ghettoes. But whatever you call it, it's VERY good stuff and this Cd will please both initiates and longtime fans of the genre with its melodic and rhythmic selections. The selection with Miriam Makeba and her early group the Skylarks is particularly appealing. If you have this already, it's a good way to turn your friends to this wonderful genre of music. Show them what Paul Simon was talking about.

5 out of 5 stars As close to indespensible as a CD can be.......2002-08-20

From first to last track, this CD is an outstanding collection of music which is either unavailable elsewhere, or very, very difficult to find (at least in Chicago). Every song on this collection is pure joy: South African pop sensibilities flavoring rich jazz. A tape of this CD is one of my steadfast driving partners, remaining in my car as other titles shuffle in and out. My only complaint is that there isn't more: I want another disk!

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent selections!.......2001-07-25

This CD is a must for anyone into Jazz music, from Contemporary Jazz to Classical, this album is one of a kind. With the various bands and sounds, you can get a good feel for what it might be like being in South Africa at a club enjoying a nice meal. With 16 songs on the album and a total of 73 minutes of playing time, you are bound to enjoy loads of fun and relaxation!

    5 out of 5 stars 'inauguration' by alan"lenny"cameron - track 1, cd2........2003-09-21

-healing, soulful sentiments and feelings from the composer and performers of this title, at an historic juncture in South African history. Particularly moving are the near to audible tears of the violinist and saxophonist whose unique solo's express one of the most truthful and reflective tributes to the life and times of Nelson Mandela. So saying it seems to be a warm and emotive musical embrace of South Africa's beautiful people & new leaders, who continue to build a nation whilst transcending everyday adversity after a long uphill struggle for peace and freedom.

5 out of 5 stars Jazz Offerings from South Africa.......2003-02-10

On a recent stop at Joburg Intl. Airport I purchased this album. Wanting to listen to it on the long trip back to the US, I went to purchase a CD player. The South African attendant when he heard cuts of the album went into ecstatatic dancing. In the short period I was in this shop five people wanted to know where I purchased it. The scene in the shop was unimaginable. The power of music to bring both black and white together. The uplifting glow has stayed with me since my return home.
