The Thomas Crown Affair is a caper story with a new (well, retread) twist: Pierce Brosnan plays a guy who can afford virtually anything, so he attempts to get something he can't, a Monet. It's a movie fitting of a polished, well-produced soundtrack, which is exactly what this disc delivers. Sting's previously unreleased version of the famous theme song "Windmills of Your Mind" lacks the suave psychedelic flair of Noel Harrison's original version (he won an Oscar for the song on the original Thomas Crown soundtrack), but should please his fans. Nina Simone's classic "Sinnerman" is a welcome contribution, and Wasis Diop's "Caban La Ka Kratchie" is a steamy world fusion tune. Bill Conti's score--varying from pulsating piano compositions to smooth jazz--rounds out the rest of this short soundtrack. For most, the real attraction here is the Sting cut. --Jason Verlinde

4 out of 5 stars The Sinnerman or the whole affair?.......2007-05-20

I wanted to get The Thomas Crown Affair Soundtrack for one reason only: The Sinnerman by Nina Simone, because I was not able to find this particular version anywhere else. And yet this song...it is simply great. When I first heard it, I could feel shivers down my spine, and have felt the same ever since. But to be completely honest, I do like the rest of the CD. Unfortunately, there is not much left. The soundtrack is rather short (31' approximately), and...well...jazzy, which is not exactly my cup of tea, but still, it was worth getting it. It is a nice, relaxing listening. Apart from The Sinnerman, of course. That one makes me feel exhilirated and strong and...well, happy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD representing most of the movie's music.......2007-03-11

This is a great CD containing most of the melodies and songs from the movie except for the Latin dance during the black and white party. I especially enjoyed Sting's Windmills Of Your Mind which is not released on any other CD (I believe) and Nina Simone's "clapping" song. One of the rare soundtracks that has all great songs and melodies in one!

5 out of 5 stars Thomas Crown Affair Soundtract.......2007-01-20

The CD was brand new, and I love the songs, it came in the mail extremley fast, even though it was a week before Christmas.

5 out of 5 stars Just as Smooth as the Movie.......2006-09-25

This is a fantastic score and I highly recommend it. While Sting does not do the best ever recording of "Windmills of Your Mind," it's still very good, relaxing, and sets up the rest of the CD well.
Simone's "Sinnerman" is either something you do or do not like. Personally the vocals get to be repetitive and irritating after a while, but the piano and hand-clapping are definitely something to be heard, especially since they bring back the enjoyed memory of Brosnan and the other men clad in their "business suits and bowler cap" shuffle game for the film's final climax. I tend to skip the vocals, but still listen to the track.
"Everything is Never Quite Enough" is one of my favorite songs on this CD, even though there are so many different languages in the lyrics. The sounds and beat are incredible, stirring all the right emotions, while the lyrics are sultry and perfectly placed together. As said before, there are different languages sung in the song (the woman sings English, but the male sings French, his native African dialect, and some various others), but they all compliment each other and it is not at all annoying. It is excellent.
"Kaban a la Kratchie" is another track that you like or you don't...it depends on one's mood. Overall it is enjoyable and nostalgic of the Caribbean and the stunning photography of the scenes filmed in the tropics, but you need to be in a light-hearted mood and "enjoying the day" attitude to fully appreciate the song.
The rest of the songs are all Bill Conti's music and his score - no lyrics. The basic theme is reheard in the music, but the pace and background instruments are certainly different so you can listen to the entire CD without getting bored and can feel your pulse quicken with the music. The score certainly brings back the movie and the entire attitude of sophistication, intelligence, and smoothness. A great CD to listen to while driving, working, reading, basic background music, or for just plain listening to.
I highly recommend it and you will most certainly not have any buyer's remorse.

5 out of 5 stars Thomas Crown Affair music from the movie.......2006-09-05

I found the music very uplifting and fun to listen to and it reminds me of the movie. I can listen during exercise and get my heart going for the day. The artists on the CD are great and I have searched for more CD's related.Sinnerman is one of my favorite songs/soundtrack.

2 out of 5 stars "The Sting" is right!.......2004-03-29

Rarely is a record so aptly named. There are only 13 songs on it, two of which are repeated twice and one, three times! You wind up with less than 25 minutes of unduplicated music out of the 80 minutes a CD can hold. I would say $6's worth. OK, the music is fine, but at a $12 (list) price, this is definitely a fine argument for "pirates" who say they'd rather rip off the record companies than the other way around.

5 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack, excellent music clarity, quality........2003-05-28

The CD exceeded my expectations. I expected an average-quality sound from an older recording (since the movie The Sting was quite old). But the music quality is superb! The bass and treble are perfectly mixed and you can hear every sound, from the high-pitched clarinets to the tuba and bass-drum.

5 out of 5 stars Listen to it until you wear it out!.......2002-08-25

When The Sting came out I was maybe eight years old but I knew right away I'd discovered a kind of music that immediately possessed my brain. When visiting an aunt I played her copy of the soundtrack until everyone was completely sick of it, except me.
Thank goodness I got my own copy which I played, literally, until it wore out.
I can't believe it took me this long to realize I badly needed the CD in my collection. It will never leave and I will play it to anyone who will listen. Great job, Marvin!

5 out of 5 stars It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that STING!.......2000-03-09

Marvin Hamlish did well to compose and/or arrange this soundtrack to the BEST PICTURE winning film. The music composed by ragtime great Scott Joplin, has a liadback, bouncy ease that makes the listener want to dance. The arrangement of Joplin's The Entertainer is superb, and much of the rest of the soundtrack hits on the ragtime flair and style. An excellent buy for the ragtime enthusiast, or the die-hard movie buff. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars I really love this soundtrack, so beautiful! a collector's item. .......2007-01-30

After I saw this movie, Sabrina and heard its beautiful music,I decided to order one. I really felt in love with it. So romantic and inspiring. My husband loves it too and we always play it again and again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Sabrina: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.......2007-01-19

Beautiful music! Regret that the poignant songs - "In the Moonlight" and "How Can I Remember" - were not fully exploited in the very enjoyable movie for which all this precious music was composed. My granddaughter and I know the fabulous lyrics by heart, having listened to the CD so many times.

5 out of 5 stars Williams At His Most Elegant.......2006-11-28

I was very surprised -yet pleased -that director Sydney Pollack went after John Williams for the score to "Sabrina", instead of his usual composer, Dave Grusin. But since I am a huge fan of John Williams, I couldn't have been happier for what is, perhaps, one of his most elegant and sophisticated scores ever.
The theme from "Sabrina" is incredibly lovely, as it is mostly played on piano, segueing to a lovely full orchestra rendition, and culminating back with the piano. 'Moonlight' is another great highlight, and I have to say this: it's incredible to see the names John Williams and Sting together in one single track; and Sting makes one memorable performance of this song. And of course, there are many variations of 'Moonlight' played by the orchestra in a very spectacular and fashionable way: specially in the track 'Linus' New Life', which closes wonderfully with Sabrina's theme. Then there is this other theme heard throughout the movie describing Sabrina's loneliness and growth, which is also lovely, and it's fully developed in a song called 'How Can I Remember?' Beautiful, indeed. And one other treat can be found in 'The Party Sequence' with fantastic selections of classic jazz and romantic pieces, among them 'The Shadow Of Your Smile' and 'Stella By Starlight'.
Williams really did a great job on "Sabrina", and the album is one of the best compilations someone can enjoy. If you want to enjoy a very relaxing night with nice music in the background, this CD might just be your ticket.

5 out of 5 stars Williams Fans CANNOT Miss This Treasure.......2006-09-27

I recieved this score as a birthday present a few weeks ago, WOW! It has already become a personal treasure, and I dare say it will always be one of my favorite Williams scores. The score is a seamless blend of jazz, glorious thematic beauty, classical pomp, and wonderful old fashioned ballads.

In short, this is an album Williams fans can not afford to miss, and a treat for anyone just entering the world of film scores.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Sountrack for a Romantic Movie I have ever heard!.......2006-05-14

John Williams has written a wonderful, sweeping score for this movie. The mention of this composer's name in any soundtrack gives it instant credibility, but this composer created a "classic score" for the movie Sabrina.

Based on a four note introduction to the words "OH Sabrina" I can hear the development in continuing cues "OH Sabrina , I'm in love with you", track 5., trying to think of the manner in which Mr. Williams might have developed this "Main Theme" that runs throughout the CD, it is the most simple way of describing how it might have been accomplished.

It is a gorgeous, lush score with strings playing a major part Williams begins with a piano solo in the first cue to introduce the music and its very rememberable theme to listeners then introduces the orchestra to embellish an encompassing first track. The piano is brilliant as is the orchestra with many french horns adding to the music.

Sting follows with a classis of his own a vocal of "Moonlight" and then it's off to Paris, the track titled "Growing up in Paris" with lots of percussion accompanying the strings and french horns. Tracks 3 though 6 envelops the entire score into a rush of music that is so wonderful it almost sweeps you away with it and segues into the next track 5, "In the Moonlight", which produces the main theme again.

You never get tired of this CD. I play it over and over, it is so happy and positive. A brilliant score form one of the best composers ever. Excellent!

Stick with the CD here. The score is better than the movie in this reviewers opinion. Get it before you have to search for it

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice collection of songs showing love is all around.......2005-01-09

With a title like Four Weddings and a Funeral, it's no surprise that the majority of tracks here deal with love. It's a mixture of cover songs, previously released songs, oldies, and new songs that really mix well. The theme of the movie, which was later recycled yet revamped in Love Actually, also starring Hugh Grant, is underscored by Scottish popsters Wet Wet Wet, who scored their biggest hit with their cover of the Troggs' "Love Is All Around," which spent 15 weeks on top of the UK charts. It's nice strings one instant, blaring rock guitar the next, but a worthy cover.

Elton John has three songs here, one of them being an old chestnut, "Crocodile Rock." The other two are cover tunes and bookend the movie, his great cover of George Gershwin's "But Not For Me" opening the film. The light strings and leisure arrangements lends the feeling that many might feel: "They're writing songs of love, but not for me." Finally, his cover of the Dixie Cups' "Chapel of Love" is played during the photo montage happy ending of the film. It's done with a rocking style reminiscent of his 70's period, and along with the Gershwin track, make these musical highlights of this collection.

Along with "Crocodile Rock," the other song played during the dance scene of Angus and Laura's wedding was that classical disco chestnut, "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor, which had Simon Callow's character doing an OTT dance to it. Nu Colours' smooth R&B rendition of the Kern/Harbach classic "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" is played during the party of the second marriage.

There are some tunes I didn't catch in the movie, but maybe next time. One was Sting's "The Secret Marriage," originally from his Nothing But The Sun album. In context of the movie, it shows how two of the characters were actually married, of sorts. Swing Out Sister lend their smooth jazz-pop sound on the Delfonics' "La La La (Means I Love You)." And Canadian duo One 2 One, who later became incarnated as Artifical Joy Club, do the bounciest song here, a soulful Stock-Aitken-Waterman-type bubblegum soul number "The Right Time." Another is the light soul of Squeeze's "Loving You Tonight," original on their Some Fantastic Place album.

The final track is dialogue taken from Matthew (John Hannah) during the memorial service of Gareth (Simon Callow) and is a reading of W.H. Auden's "Funeral Blues" with the score accompaniment. After all, this wasn't merely called Four Weddings.

There aren't many directors with the talent--or nerve--to compose and play the music for their films (although creepmeister John Carpenter comes to mind), and none have done it more artfully than Mike Figgis on Leaving Las Vegas. Though Figgis was nominated for both writing and directing Oscars (and Nicolas Cage won one for Best Actor) for the 1995 film, listening to his subdued, moody jazz (punctuated by vocal standard renditions by Sting and Don Henley) one can't help feeling that his music was unfairly overlooked. Smokey and mournful, it plays against the Vegas musical stereotype by underscoring the loneliness at the heart of Sin City. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars What Happened.......2000-02-08

The soundtrack for Leaving Las Vegas was very good, Mike Figgis is an excellent conducter of the boozy feel of moments better left without lyrics. However, I cannot in good conscience give the soundtrack a higher rating, as the absence of the Michael McDonald version of "Lonely Teardrops", used twice in the film to great effect, is not available anywhere, I presume, as I've been unable to track it down. WHY? This song is incredible, and well worth the price of admission. Sting and Don Henley not withstanding, they both are very good, but the absence of Mike on the soundtrack is a Major letdown....if anyone knows how to get a copy of the "Lonely Teardrops" version on this movie please let me know...Buk218@aol.com

4 out of 5 stars Graet Soundtrack, but Mike Figgis BLEW IT...........2000-02-01

This is one of the better soundtracks of a rather great movie, with only one problem. The most powerful song of the movie, "Lonely Teardrops", re-made by Michael McDonald, is somehow missing from the soundtrack... Not only is this the most powerful song in the movie, but it is the most memorable. This leaves one to ask how it could have been left out of the soundtrack, and why Mike Figgis BLEW IT...
