Trombonist/bandleader Glenn Miller was already a veteran big band player and orchestrator when in 1938 he assembled what would become one of the most popular groups in jazz history. Miller developed a lush sound via reed section arrangements pitting a clarinet against four saxophones, a sound that clicked for a series of massive hits, including "In the Mood," "Little Brown Jug," "Sunrise Serenade," and "Chattanooga Choo-Choo," all of which are included here, along with such staples as "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree," "You Stepped Out of My Dreams," "Star Dust" and "Pennsylvania 6-5000." Closer to pop than swing, this is the music that served as the soundtrack to World War II and has since become synonymous with nostalgia for that era. --John Swenson

Although it squarely falls in the "jukebox musical" category, Jersey Boys doesn¹t try to integrate its songs in an artificial plotline. The show tells the story of the early-1960s group the Four Seasons, and the musical numbers tend to be introduced in context, as when songwriter Bob Gaudio comes up with a tune, or the quartet performs a show. This allows Jersey Boys to flow better than some of ill-fated peers, and the actors can shine without having to bend backward to accommodate an inane book. The show's most (only) daring move is to start with a hip-hop-tinged French-language version of "December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)," an actual hit in France in 2000. After that it's all VH1-biopic territory, but it's done with so much flair, taste and energy that the ride's a fun one. The Four Seasons had enough hits ("Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Rag Doll," etc.) to easily fill an evening at the theater, so it's left to the cast to do right by them. And it does, particularly John Lloyd Young as the band¹s star lead, Frankie Valli. Young hits all the falsetto notes and brings real freshness to the part. His "Can¹t Take My Eyes Off You," a second-act peak, is signed, sealed and delivered with a star's acumen. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Album Description
Recounting the rich history and reliving the timeless sounds of the phenomenal Frankie Vallie & The 4 Seasons, the new Broadway musical Jersey Boys answers the musical-and philosophical question, "How did four would-be wise guys from Newark, NJ, become one of the greatest chart-topping successes in pop music history?" Jersey Boys celebrates legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito, and Nick Massi who, as the 4 seasons, wrote their own songs, invented their own identity, and sold 175 million records worldwide-all before they were 30.

Jersey Boys.......2007-07-08
Purchased CD prior to seeing the show when visiting USA in '06. A fun lively show - the CD now captivates those fond memories of not only the foot tapping music & show but also our special time in New York.
Like being there.......2007-07-05
Have seen the play twice. This album lets me relive the experience anytime anyplace. A great piece of Rock n roll history.
A step back in musical time.......2007-07-05
My wife and daughter didn't know about the Four Seasons but I did. When I told them I wanted to see the musical on stage, there was no interest so I bought this product and they heard it in the car. We went to the stage musical soon after and we have listened to the entire disk so many times I've lost track. I created a Four Seasons monster in my daughter. She's fifteen and has memorized most of the songs and sings along while we are driving somewhere.
Great music, but missing too much.......2007-07-04
I saw this play at age 16 with no idea who the Four Seasons were, but instantly fell in love with it. The problem is, this soudntrack cuts a two hour play into less than an hour on CD. Most of the dialouge is missing, only including enough to let each member of the group at least say something. I know many play soundtracks cut out dialouge, but what confuses me is why this stretches to the music as well. What is there is amazing, but I don't understand why most of the songs are cut to half, and sometimes even a third or fourth of their original lengths. I love this CD, just be aware that you are hardly getting any story, just clips of lots of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons songs. So, great music and dialouge, just not enough for a musical soundtrack.
Jersey boys win my heart.......2007-07-03
what a wonderful album-brings back such wonderful memories
they don't write songs like this enough today

Irish troubadour Damien Rice doesn't so much reinvent the folk genre on this lush, impossibly mature debut album as push its boundaries in several compelling musical directions at once--all the more remarkable considering the album was largely self-produced and home-recorded. His songs revolve around familiar, bittersweet concerns of life, love, and their attendant frustrations, but delivered with conspiratorial intimacy on melodic wings (like on the graceful "Cannonball") that Rice seems almost embarrassed to share. If there's anything like a template here, it's "The Blower's Daughter," the song that first attracted the interest/stewardship of film composer David Arnold (whose guest production provides "Amie" with expansive cinematic elegance) and became a massive Irish hit. His plaintive vocal, embroidered by the mournful solo cello of Vyvienne Long, is suddenly brightened by an instrumental flourish and Lisa Hannigan's vocals--before just as quickly wafting on the breeze. With touches that range from "Day in the Life"-styled string collages to the dizzy, exhilarating neo-operatic excesses of the 16-minute "Eskimo," Rice's musical palate here is as adventurous as his songs are grounded in emotional intimacy. --Jerry McCulley
Album Description
Damien Rice's intriguing brand of stylishly, un-styled dirty folk music has made him one of the standout artists of 2003. O was first released in Ireland, where it quickly broke the top ten, and achieved triple-platinum status. Slim hard-back digipak. Vector. 2003.
Customer Reviews:
And so it is, just like you said it would be.......2007-06-17
If there's ever been an album so hopelessly beautiful as Damien Rice's "O," I've yet to hear it. It's not a glittering beauty like the early music of Enya, nor a razor-edged beauty like Radiohead's "OK Computer" or the falsetto of Coldplay's Chris Martin. No, "O" is in a category all by itself. The title, a single, apparently meaningless letter, is so fitting for the record. Like the record, there's a beautiful simplicity to it, but close examination reveals a delightful intricacy. And so it is with Damien Rice's music. The Irish folk troubadour's sincerety, clear in each of his heart-tuggingly poetic compositions, is a welcoming nakedness that shines through his bittersweet vocals.
The magic's in the arrangements as well as the vocals, though - the echoing guitar and longing cello in the record's highlight, the dazzling "Blower's Daughter" (well-used as the main theme for Mike Nichol's screen adaptation of "Closer"); the mixture of classic and contemporary instruments which fall like an avalanche in "Cheers Darlin'"; the consciously insane opera in the wonderful "Eskimo." Rice is aware of the craziness of this world, but he's more interested in the simple beauty of it: things like the wind in your hair or the sun setting over a field. Lisa Hannigan's smooth, breezy vocals support Rice, who knows just when to let her soar. In fact, Rice knows when to do everything. His timing is impeccable. He knows when to sing, when to let Hannigan sing, when to bring in the violins - even when to let the opera singer loose.
There are by no standards any bad or even lackluster pieces on "O." There are some that are more extraodinary than others, however: along with "Blower's Daughter," the reflective "Cold Water," the bitter "Cheers Darlin'," the wise "Volcano," the another-day folk of "Older Chests," and the soaring lunacy that is "Eskimo" (hang around throughout "Eskimo" to hear two hidden tracks, the excellent, bombastic "Prague" and Hannigan's cynical take on "Silent Night"). As an added bonus, each song works equally well seperately or together with the rest of the album. I'd highly recommend buying the album as opposed to downloading the songs, though. Almost impossibly beautiful, "O" was one of the best records of 2003 (the best?) and remains one of the best of the decade.
My Most Prized Possession.......2007-06-17
Hands down this CD is my most cherished cd out the 100 or so that i have. Nothing else compares! I love all the songs on it,(except volcano)which is very rare, Most of cds i normally like three or four. But this, this is unreal, you have to have it. As soon as he released it in the states I bought it. And i heard his music long before they decided to sell it here. My all time favorite is Blower's Daughter,Cold Water,I Remember,Older Chests, Ohh i can't make up my mind. There all good, and Damien,Damien is Great!
Great suprise.......2007-05-09
This CD is better than I had thought. It is very sensitive, varied with a personal style. You do listen the song number 10.
Absolutely awesome ..........2007-05-07
One of the best albums ever! My favorite song keeps changing from time to time and mood. "Older Chests", "Eskimo", "Blower's Daughter", ... all of them are fantastic compositions with great lyrics, music and vocals ... a truly stunning album!

Pleasantly surprised.......2005-08-12
Having heard a song by Edith Piaf while watching the movie "Saving Private Ryan" and being captivated by the sound of her voice, I decided to venture into a completely new direction in my listening library. I must admit that I have not been able to take this CD out of any player that happens to be around me! Even though I have no idea of the lyrics, Ms. Piaf has the ability to draw you in and make you feel like you understand exactly what she is saying. She is joyful, tragic, coy, sad, dramatic, and ultimately she leaves me with the feeling of her devotion to her art and her time in history.

Possibilities, by jazz piano/keyboard legend Herbie Hancock, with songs by Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, and Leon Russell, is a multigenerational masterpiece. Rock's "it boy" John Mayer leads off the CD with the spare, bouncy opener, "Stitched Up." Brit-born soul girl Joss Stone and bluesman Jonny Lang get down on the gutbucket "When Love Comes to Town." Christina Aguilera's excellent vocals illuminate "A Song for You." Not to be outdone, Annie Lennox delivers an operatic take on Holly Cole's "Hush, Hush, Hush," while Sting's "Sister Moon" swings with stealthy syncopations. Santana and the Beninese singer Angelique Kidjo provide the world flavor on "Safiotou," and the dreamy "Gelo No Montana," with ex-Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio, is the lone instrumental. Hancock's tight solos and intelligent orchestral synths radiate all of the tracks. Like Frank Sinatra's Duets and Ray Charles's Genius Loves Company, Possibilities introduces Hancock to a new and awestruck generation. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Imagine the possibilities
..
"Possibilities" is the musical event of the year. The album is a series of inspired encounters between Herbie Hancock and world-renowned musicians - including John Mayer, Sting, Trey Anastasio, Annie Lennox, Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan, Santana and Angelique Kidjo, Paul Simon, Christina Aguilera, Jonny Lang, Joss Stone, and Raul Midon. Herbie Hancock describes "Possibilities" this way: "This is a real collaboration that we're doing here. It's all been decided at the session, a record without borders, woven like a tapestry with many colors. The possibilities are endless"
Customer Reviews:
A new generation of Hancock music to love!.......2007-06-08
The mix of artists Herbie Hancock chose to work with was exceptional. There's a track on the playlist for everyone to love. Haunting melodies to ones that make you want to clap and sing along.
It's one of the best CD's I've purchased in a long time!
Herbie Hancock, Possibilities.......2007-03-23
The very best I've heard in a long time. So many talents with Herbie. Christina Aguilara is excellent, Joss Stone, Sting very best arrangements of great songs. Loved it, refer it to all my grown-up music loving friends.
Should Have Bought Just The One Song I Liked.......2007-03-09
What a disappointment this album was. If not for the first duet with John Mayer, this CD would be nothing but a coaster for me.
Great Listening.......2007-01-10
This album is masterfully done. Everytime you listen to it you will come away with something new and exciting.
THE MASTER TEACHES THE KIDS SOME TRICKS..........2006-10-25
For those of us who fear that "American Idol" is in the process of ruining an entire generation of performers, this disc gives hope. In making this record, Herbie has taught an entire roster of "stars" that part being a star is to know that every note DOESN'T HAVE TO BE over-sung or over-played. This set is packed with wonderfully matched songs and artists with arrangement that bring out the best in all.
The singing of Paul Simon, Annie Lennox, Damien Rice with Lisa Hannigan and John Mayer is top notch. And, Christina Aquilera has NEVER sounded this good!
And one final thing. The control and restraint by Herbie Hancock is amazing. Don't worry. He GETS his moments to shine on this disc. But he is masterful in getting out of the way so others can share the spotlight.
POSSIBILITIES is fun and uplifting. At other points, it is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful and incredibly sad discs that I've ever heard. It will always be in my music collection and will offer different things to appreciate with each listening. BUY THIS ONE!!!!

Though folksinger Richard Shindell writes most of his own material, here he puts his conceptual and interpretive stamp on a wide range of songs by others. His rendition of "Señor (Tales of Yankee Power)" transforms that Dylan obscurity into one of the better Dylan covers, highlighted by Shindell's otherworldly slide guitar. That song finds a thematic partner in "Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos)," by Dylan's earliest major influence, Woody Guthrie. From Robbie Robertson's "Acadian Driftwood" and A.P. Carter's "The Storms Are on the Ocean" to a mandolin-driven rendition of Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A." and Peter Gabriel's "Mercy Street" (the only cover that doesn't really work, as it strains the upper register of Shindell's craggy baritone), the material has a strong sense of place and displacement. (As the artist suggests in his brief notes, every one of these songs has a narrator who may be quite distinct from the songwriter.) Among those providing superb support are guitarist Richard Thompson (on two cuts), bassist Viktor Krauss, former Dylan sideman Larry Campbell (on electric and steel guitars), and Lucy Kaplansky and Eliza Gilkyson on harmonies. --Don McLeese

His Best Work to Date .......2007-05-23
This is an extremely accomplished work of covers and I can't seem to get enough of this CD. It is a staple CD in my car and I listen to it on my commute to and from work. I never tire of it. This CD is thoroughly enjoyable and the musicanship, vocals, and choice of songs here is truely its strong points. I am fairly new to Richard's music, but I traveled 5 hours to Asheville, NC a short while back to see him in concert. I was not disappointed. I have since purchased "Vuelta" and "Paterson" and the "Cry Cry Cry" disc. All those are excellent as well and highly recommended. This I think is his best CD to date and you just can't go wrong with it.
Richard in his element.......2007-05-13
Having hear RS in concert a number of times over the years, it always has been a wonderful experience to hear him re-interpret his own songs. So it is an easy bridge to hearing his covers of some of the songs he likes best/has been influenced by most. As far as production and musical maturity, this project is miles ahead of the "Cry, Cry, Cry" CD, however enjoyable that was in places. RS clearly feels a close bond with these songs, and his approach is to cherish them and explore them as narratives. Arrangements are typically simple and unobtrusive, but playing throughout is exemplary. RS' voice continues to develop depth and richness, and this is a fine example of a top notch song writer pouring his heart into honoring those that helped pave the way for him.

Album Description
Presenting twelve songs culled from Browne's extensive and critically acclaimed solo acoustic concerts around the world over the past few years, the disc also captures both spirited and humorous exchanges between Jackson and his audiences, making for a truly intimate listening experience. This new comp, produced by Browne and Paul Dieter, is Jackson's first live release since his 1977 multi-platinum "Running On Empty" album. It also marks the recording debut of a three decades old track, "The Birds Of St. Marks", not previously released in any form. "Solo Acoustic" reaches back to Browne's early years with "These Days" and "Take It Easy", and spans his entire career with other highlights such as "Fountain Of Sorrow", "For Everyman", "The Pretender", and "Looking East". A stirring version of "Lives In The Balance", the title track from Jackson's powerful 1986 album, will be this record's lead single.
Customer Reviews:
Where's Vol. 2??.......2007-06-01
I had the pleasure of seeing this show "live" when he dared to bring it into a really conservative hotbed in Escondido. The show was outstanding, even with the handful of annoyed conservatives grousing out loud to "Just sing" and other odd comments. Jackson Browne has been a liberal activist/performer for over 30 years now - how this escaped so many folks is some mystery.
The music is simply outstanding in its simple arrangement, and the commentary is, well, who the man is. For true fans it's great stuff. I hope volume 2 has a couple of Zevon tunes on it - as he "covered" several of these in the aftermath of the Excitable boy's untimely passing.
up front and personal.......2007-05-29
Jackson Browne has contributed so much both as a political voice and a song writer. These acoustic gems are not all the usual songs he is most associated with. But they are definitely great examples of his sensitivity to the subject matter which he writes about and his warmth he exudes on stage with his audience. Although it would not be my first recommendation to someone who is unfamiliar with his music, it is still a very good body of work to have in your collection if you find yourself as moved as I am by his prose.
Great to hear Jackson again.......2007-03-10
I didn't even know JB was still around! I purchased this CD and was so happy with it, I sent one off to my brother. He sings some of his famous songs and mixed in between is hilarious commentary on life, the road, the songs, women. I love this CD.
Bruce Springsteen for intellectuals.......2007-02-25
Awesome CD. Brief review, excellent songs, excellent voice, excellent sound. The acoustic setup takes away most of the 'retro' feel that comes with the original recordings from which the songs derive and makes them much more contemporary sounding.
Quality Jackson.......2007-02-15
Very nice compilation of classic Jackson Browne music in a live setting. HIs stories between songs are entertaining without being overwhelmingly "live". Any fan of Jackson will love this pure sound.

"THE JUDY GARLAND JACKPOT"!!!.......2007-06-20
Judy Garland fans who buy this box set will definitely feel they have hit The JUDY GARLAND JACKPOT" and experience musical nirvana here on earth! Oh, Yes!! For starters, you get three complete Capitol Albums, plus excerpts from others, rarities. alternate takes, etc. for a whopping grand total of 72 gorgeous tracks; and very affordably priced, too! The beautiful booklet includes extremely well-written liner notes and stunningly lovely photographs of Our Lady Of Song.
Once Judy was free from the shackles of the MGM movie studio, she started Concert appearances and gave us a brilliant "A STAR IS BORN" at Warner Brothers in 1954. Arriving at Capitol Records in 1955, Judy took charge; determined to sing her songs HER way. With superb arrangements from Nelson Riddle, Mort Lindsey, and others, Judy never sang in the "sweet girl next door from MGM Style" ever again!! She was a woman with a lot of good and bad life experience, and it shows in the rich, robust, warm, full-throttle vocals here.
In addition to Judy's signature songs, you'll hear "Danny Boy", "Last Night When We Were Young", "Me And My Shadow," "Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries," "Lucky Day," "Little Girl Blue," "Anyplace I Hang My Hat Is Home," "I Gotta Right To Sing The Blues," "I Concenttrate On You," "If I Love Again," "This Is It", and so many more! The only real great Judy performances I'm missing here are "Hello, Bluebird" and the full-force, dramatic Mort Lindsey arrangement of "By Myself"-- both of these are included on the soundtrack of Judy's final film "I COULD GO ON SINGING" in 1963. For The Record, on the beautiful 1955 recording of "Over The Rainbow" included here on CD One, it does sound as though Judy quietly bursts into tears mid-way through, and just keeps on crying until the finish. Judy's fans, however (and we know who we are!) will be filled with joy. for this beautiful 3-CD Set, along with "THE WIZARD OF OZ," "A STAR IS BORN" and the complete, historic 1961 "CARNEGIE HALL" CD, are all the essentials necessary for a proper Judy Garland Festival. REJOICE IN THE GLORIOUS TALENTS OF JUDY GARLAND!!! Amen!!
Rare Manufacturing Glitch Corrected.......2007-06-13
As a member of the production team, I noticed and inquired about the comments that CD #1 had a manufacturing defect. EMI London looked into this with the plant, to learn that it did accidentally occurr on a few pressings, and it has been corrected. Our sincere apologies. It should not happen again. My information is that anyone who has a defective CD should be able to return it to the seller, and they will be supplied a new one. This is most unusual, and again our apologies. We were very pleased to see the comments on the booklet and excellent audio quality, as a great deal of time was spent on them. These recordings are glorious, and we wanted them presented in the best way possible.
Great Vocal Poor Quality CD.......2007-05-19
The vocals and remastering are superb on this Judy Garland CD. I agree with the reviewer who noted the POOR quality of the first cd. I too, have purchased two copies of this set from two different Amazon sellers and both skip on the "Memories of You " track. Shame on EMI you can even see a bubble on the playing side of the first CD.
The Best of Judy Garland.......2007-05-16
This is an excellent collection of Judy's best. She was a great entertainer and singer. Once she sang a song, nobody else could sing it better.
Poor CD Quality.......2007-05-13
Both Judy Garland's voice and the music on these CD's are incredible. However, on disc 1 song #17 the CD sticks and won't move on to the next song. I have tried 2 different sets of this CD they both stick on the same song in the same place. Perhaps, because this CD was made in England is the problem. I have never experienced this type of problem with any CD. Please let me know if anyone else has experienced this same problem with this CD. Thank you.

In hindsight, it seems almost incredible: 27 years ago, a young musician named Jeff Wayne (who at the time primarily wrote music for commercials) fell in love with H.G. Wells' much-loved book The War of the Worlds, and decided to make a musical version of it. Star Wars had just put people's minds into outer space, musical theatre was hugely successful, and long, anthemic orchestral prog-rock was all the rage. Wayne was inspired by all these elements and decided to gather together his peers and make a musical-mixed-with-spoken-word album, with the script taken directly from the famous book. This was by no means a soundtrack to a movie; in fact, all of the visuals were to come straight from the listener's minds (hard to imagine in today's video-oriented world.) The two-LP set featured Sir Richard Burton as frontman, along with some of the leaders of the progressive rock world who joined in on the fun. Moody Blues' Justin Hayward, "Rock On" vocalist David Essex and Thin Lizzy lead Philip Lynott each did more than sing on the record, they took a part in the musical play, performing key roles alongside the aforementioned dramatist Burton.
Amazingly, the eccentric project was a massive success, selling over 13 million copies and staying on the U.K. charts for over 260 weeks straight. DJs and bands--including the Orbital and Todd Terry--still use WOTW samples to inspire their own works. Unquestionably, the genesis of electronica can (in part) be mapped back to the War of the Worlds' use of sound experimentation and synthesized grooves.
The re-released double CD got a revamping both on an auditory and visual front: on the sonic side, the collection is now a remastered disc, mixed both in stereo and 5.1 surround sound. On the cosmetic side, the collection is now a six-panel digipack, with 48 pages of lyrics, biographies, and a handful of paintings from the original artwork. The music comes as a pair of Super Audio CDs (SACDs), a technology that will play both in standard and SACD players, the latter receiving up to four more times the sonic information for superior sound quality. --Denise Sheppard

* 2 Hybrid SACDs - The original double album remixed in stereo and multi-channel 5.1 surround sound from the original 48 track master tapes by Jeff Wayne.

War of the Worlds.......2007-02-17
My father used to listen to this a lot when I was a kid. I final found this and it is as great as I remember...
Jeff Waynes War of the Worlds.......2007-01-04
I am trying to replace my 80's cassettes with dvd's. This s a very inexpensive way of doing this. You guys got a ton more titles that=n the local music store chains. Keep up the good work. My older brother purchased this musical on a 2 record album. It sounded great on a record player, but it sounds even better in this format. Thanx again
One of a kind!.......2006-12-31
Jeff Wayne's "The War of the Worlds" is truly a unique undertaking (a two-hour rock album based on an H.G. Wells novel? who would think of such a thing?)--and a remarkably successful one. Steering almost entirely clear of special effects, Wayne uses recurring musical elements to tell his story--the ominous chords of the main theme; the driving bass rhythm which we first hear at the start of "The Heat Ray"; the eerie Martian whistle which makes a final, unexpected appearance in the Epilogue--with great effectiveness. Sure, this is a 1976 recording, and the wokka-wokka disco sound of the era makes occasional appearances--but overall, this recording has aged remarkably well. Wayne clearly has mastery of all musical genres. My only complaint would be that the second disc isn't quite as inspired as the first--too much atmosphere and not enough action for my taste. Nonetheless, a 5-star album.
Good stuff never fades away.......2006-12-21
I bought the 2 LP set of this back when it first came out, after hearing a snippet of it on the radio. Simply put, it stands on its own against ANYTHING written, or recorded since, in any popular/rock music arena. I just found out how popular it has become, which is very cool. I was right 25 years ago........ ;-)
Did I say RECORD PLAYER?.......2006-08-06
I have the original LP records (remember those?) of this production. I loved it then but had tired of having to drag out an antique record player to enjoy Jeff Wayne's Musical Version Of The War Of The Worlds.
Enter CD's! This is a great experience for those of us who own the original. The ease of CD's makes this production enjoyable again! I also recommend it for everyone else who has never heard it before.

Passionate.......2006-03-14
Passionate and full of soul. I wish I dropped by Delta 88 to hear Joan live. Even if you're not a fan of her recent CDs, this one is worth getting. Think Janis Joplin, Aretha and Billie, but with her own distinct style. Buy it and enjoy, you won't be disappointed.
Amazing Blues Album!!!.......2005-02-15
Joan Osborne is simply an amazing talent and this may be her best album!!! Having grown up in Memphis around the music of Furry Lewis, Al Green, Elvis Presley, the Staple Singers, Jimi Hendrix, and B.B. King, I can tell you that this Amazing Lady graduated from the old school of Blues/Rock. If you love Blues and Rock, you simply must add this CD to your collection. You'll find yourself listening to it over and over!
Help.......2003-12-10
Does anyone know if Joan sings the song from Joan of Arcadia-What if God were on of us?? I am sure it is her but cant find it!
if you knew joan..........2003-06-05
No, i don't actually KNOW Joan, any more than any of the other thousands who had the pleasure of watching her smoke every other chick on the NYC music scene when the calendar started with a 19 and not a 20. i am writing this b/c another reviewer reminded how much i used to really enjoy catching joan live at wetlands, delta- even at continental divide and gonzales if memory serves- it seemed like you could catch her somewhere at least once a week and sometimes even twice. i get up at 5 am for work, and joan was the only musician who could ALWAYS get me out on a school night. this album almost captures her LIVE energy.
i remember the first time i saw her live at a w/e outdoor show at the seaport [an outdoor 'mall' that i despised, but my EXwife liked]. in the midst of all the summertime heat and shopping, folks profiling their boats and overdressed types getting their heels caught in the boardwalk, i heard the voice of an angel- albeit a dirty angel that sang with a leer and a wink. if you think her vh1 or austin city limits gigs were hot, they were nothing compared to hearing her in a low ceilinged, smoke filled juke joint, watching her hips sway as she torched the joint with her sheer joy at being alive. she could take that room up and down and all around and you wouldn't hit the head for fear of missing a moment. and now she opens for the 'dixie chicks'.... i'm waiting for her return to small venue playing- that is the very best place to feel her full impact.
enough of the memory lane- just letting you know i been digging joan since you didn't know who she was, and i am telling you that THIS IS THE JOAN THAT I REMEMBER! no, i don't absolutely love every cut, but nonetheless, this is consistently among the most played on my iPod- much more than relish or righteous love [both good in their own right- BUT not Definitive joan]. i will leave it to others to break it down cut by cut- on the whole they get it right. i just need to let you know that THIS is joan, 'straight no chaser'!
btw- ran into her in street recently and the energy and vibe art STILL there in person. if you EVER have a chance to see her live, do yourself a favour and GO!
Do you REALLY want to know Joan Osborne?.......2003-05-30
Look no further than this compilation CD of her early works, before she was signed to major label deal. Here, her first live CD ("Live at Delta 88") and studio EP (or two...I forget) are distilled into a great document. Without question, Ms Osborne is the kind of raw/gritty singer who should not be tamed or molded by a hotshot producer or record company demands for a hit single. She should be on the stage singing blues, soul and rhythm and blues standards with a few tasty originals mixed in, and that's what's presented here in all it's glory. If you're one of those original Joan fans who remembers her gigs at places like Wetlands Preserve (when anyone who was anyone on the downtown scene was apt to sit in for a song or two - Blues Traveler, the Spin Doctors, God Street Wine, etc.), then you'll get a real nostalgia kick out of this treasure.

Altar Boyz may ride on a single idea, but that idea is brilliantly carried through: What if there was an openly Christian boy band? Because the show's success depends on that one concept, every detail has to be perfec--and it is. Each member of the titular quintet is typecast--the Hispanic one, the gangsta one, the could-be-gay one, etc.--and the singers perfectly ape the perky 'N Sync/American Idol style, easily navigating between yelping pleading and bombastic bravado. The booklet even comes complete with lengthy, smarmy thanks from the Boyz ("big props to the Big Man in the sky"). As for the music, it's drenched in cheesy synths and appropriately catchy: Gary Adler and Michael Patrick Walker (contributing six songs each) may have gleefully nailed the genre's inane lyrics, but they didn't forget the melodies either. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

very good.......2007-07-03
i really enjoyed this CD, the only problem i have with it is that the show was so amazing live that a CD can't quite do it justice. Regardless, it still made me happy.
Enjoying the show all over again.......2007-06-27
Having totally enjoyed the show live in San Francisco, every time I play this CD I am allowed to relive the experience. It was a fabulous production and I am so happy to hear them sing again and again.
Good...but the guys on tour are better.......2007-05-18
If you are buying this disc. after seeing Altar Boyz on tour you will be disappointed. Vocals just aren't as strong. I can't speak for the current off-broadway cast, haven't seen them perform. Over all, this cd is pretty good.
Enjoyable.......2007-05-12
Got the CD before I saw the show and it was amazing. Songs that stick, and you end up humming them all the time.
A must have for everyone.
Moore Boyz Please!.......2007-02-12
This past Friday and Saturday night I got to see Altar Boyz tour cast at the Moore Theatre in Seattle. I have known of it for about a year and a half, but only purchased the CD 3 months ago. Since I got it, I have not turned it off. The clever wit infused throughout the performance is extremley hilarious. The performance starts with the first bell chime and the entire theatre is on their feet applauding. The honest enthusiasm that the cast brings to their characters really gets to you.
With its fast pace dancing, hilarious characters ( I have to admit, I am cliche, Mark is my favorite...) and horribly delightful lyrics, Altar Boyz really is fun.
We bought the tickets about a month ago, and after seeing it on Friday I called up my friend and told her she simply had to see it. The tickets are about 35$ a seat, and it is defintaley worth it. I went to see it again on Saturday night with my friend, and after we went out to the stage door and got to meet the cast. We got a couple photos, as well as several autographs.
The tour cast was really nice, and Jesse (the guy who plays Luke) offered to take a photo with me twice, as the first time I had closed my eyes. Matthew Buckner (who plays Matthew) remembered me from the night before, and everyone really was very sweet.
I would definatley reccomend that you go and see this, I wish I could see it again and again! I really hope they come out with an Altar Boyz DVD, just a recording of the performance really. This musical will have you laughing from start to finish, guarenteed.
Enjoy, and don't forget to bring you're crunk!
