About the Artist
Throughout his career, Ladd has explored the many facets of big band arranging and composition. He has long admired the big bands of Stan Kenton, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Gerald Wilson, Gerry Mulligan and others; and though all of these influences flow through his pen he has forged a unique style as evidenced by the music on this CD. There is a great variety of color and style in his writing, all of it first rate.
Members of Ladd's band have played with the big bands of Brian Setzer, Bob Florence, Clayton/Hamilton, Gerald Wilson, Don Ellis, Harry James, Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, Bill Holman, Toshiko Akioki, Nelson Riddle, Tex Beneke and Les Brown. Many have worked as back-up musicians on tours, recordings and in concerts with: Frank Sinatra, BB King, Barbra Streisand, Diana Krall, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight, Frank Zappa, Doc Severinsen, Natalie Cole, Lou Rawls, Paula Abdul, Bette Midler, Poncho Sanchez, Stevie Wonder, Sheila E., Oingo Boingo, Dizzy Gillespie, The Beach Boys, James Brown, The Supremes, Scott Henderson, Tito Puente, Arturo Sandoval, Dwight Yoakam, Diane Schuur, Cal Tjader, Mongo Santamaria, Tom Jones, Johnny Mathis, Tom Petty, Paul Anka, The Temptations, Patti LaBelle, The Rippingtons, James Taylor, Ella Fitzgerald and many others. Some have played on hundreds of motion picture sound tracks and on the Academy Awards show as well as the Golden Globes.

Customer Reviews:
How this band has fallen!.......2007-07-10
Its hard to believe this is the same group that created the amazing album "Mother Earth". I had to keep checking the liner notes to make sure I had the right band. WTF happened? After the slightly disappointing "Silent Force" album I hoped they would get back on track. I now appreciate how good Silent Force was. Oh well, I'm off to the used record store to get rid of this mess.
Must have for Within Temptation fans! It does not disappoint!.......2007-07-03
First matter at hand, do not listen to any of these so called fans that say negative things about "The Silent Force". It is by far an awesome album in which I loved every single song. So the next album had a lot on its plate in trying to step up to the caliber of Silent Force. Fortunately, The Heart of Everything does just about that!
Tracks:
1. Howling - Let's just say I cranked up the volume in preparation for the experience. When the Howling came blasting on with the haunting choir and Sharon's dark voice, it sent chills down my spine and brought tears to my eyes. This song is Within Temptation in true Silent Force mode with the music, choir, and Sharon's voice soaring high and beautifully. The song about killing and descent into madness definitely suits the music and singing. Rating - 10/10
2. What Have You Done - I was a bit put off at first that WT went with a guest singer in Keith Caputo on a song. I don't even know who that is. But surprisingly the guy doesn't have a bad voice (although one appearance is enough). I admit like the rest of the reviewers that this song sounds a lot like something Evanescence would do. But the issue is that I firmly believe Evanescence's last album to be a complete failure. This song is pretty good in tempo and dark mood in showing Evanescence how it is REALLY done. Rating - 8/10
3. Frozen - The first ballad of the album, but it is really a hard ballad when you really look at it. A haunting song about sacrifice that sees Sharon soaring with her voice in lamenting quality that will send more chills through you. As you can tell by this point as I did listening, this album has a darker overtone to it so far. Rating - 9/10
4. Our Solemn Hour - WOW! Just when you think another dark song would come out, this song literally explodes into a soaring melody of choir and Sharon's voice. I was a little put off at first by the guy talking a little in the background but you either learn to tune it out or accept it (it only happens at a few short points really, that's all). I accepted it as it fits the song well in talking about the destruction mankind is wreaking havoc in its sinfulness and Sharon pleading for the Holy Spirit to redeem and save us. Just the choir chanting "Sanctus Espiritus" is mind blowing! Then Sharon belting it out with everything she's got with her voice will blow it away even further! By far my favorite song on this album and would receive a 100 rating if I could! Unbelievable! Rating - 10/10!
5. The Heart of Everything - This song actually rather surprised me. Most all of us are used to Sharon soaring with her voice, but in this one she brings her voice down lower than I've every heard her before. And she pulls it off really well! Probably one of the most gothy songs on the album, reaching back to their earlier days with some of the subtle growling in the background. The darkest song yet to be sure. Rating - 8/10
6. Hand of Sorrow - If Our Solemn Hour wasn't on this album, this song would easily be the hit of the album. It is much like the song mentioned but with less choir. In Hand of Sorrow you can hear Sharon more clearly in her melodic voice. Again she cuts loose with her vocals in this incredible song about a tortured soul torn between his love and his oath of honor in which often makes pay the price in doing terrible things. Another hit! 10/10
7. The Cross - Track number seven isn't 'lucky number seven' for Within Temptation. This is the one song on the whole album where they tripped and fell flat on their face. It starts off with Sharon high pitched like Mariah Carey before you hear her "Ah ah ah ah ah aaaaahhhhh!" repeatedly! It sounds like some weird laughing that is seriously distracting and annoying. I gritted my teeth trying to listen through the whole song but I only made it 2/3 of the way through. WT would best be wise to avoid this kind of style like the plague in the future. Rating - 3/10
8. Final Destination - WT gets off the ground and dusts themselves off as they redeem themselves with this track about escaping death but leading into paranoia about death around every corner and how easily fragile life can be snatched away. Sharon once again drops her voice down but not so much of the time in this one as she is soon back to singing high with her angelic voice. Rating - 9/10
9. All I Need - The first real ballad of the album. No choir. Very little guitars. Just Sharon singing passionately with drum and orchestra about the hope found in love. A big contrast compared to the darkness of most of the album but a really nice touch. In this we get to see Sharon's versatility in being able to sing a great love ballad. Rating - 8/10
10. The Truth Beneath the Rose - Back to the darkness we go! The choir never ceases to fail as they explode into a haunting chant before Sharon comes in to sing this song about the inner turmoil and battle a person faces with the evil inside oneself while praying for forgiveness for sins committed. The longest song on the album is what it ends up being but you barely notice as the whole song captivates you all the way through! Outstanding! Rating - 10/10
11. Forgiven - Get your tissues out for this one cause you WILL need it. This song has only Sharon's voice, violin, and a Piano in a haunting song of grief over losing a loved one and being left behind. I was left in tears by the end of the song. Her voice is so bitterly sweet that it will no doubt touch most everyone's heart. It brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it, reminding me of loved ones I miss so much. Simply Beautiful doesn't begin to describe it. Rating - 10/10
Overall this album is much like a mixture of Silent Force and Mother Earth that really makes for memorable songs. While it falls just short of the incredible album Silent Force, it is another fine installment by Within Temptation that will keep me as a fan for a long time! This album is a must have for other fans and for anyone interested in this group. I love it!
Overall Rating - 9/10
Absolutely wonderful.......2007-07-02
All I can say is wow, this album is one of the best in a while. I generally come here on amazon to look for new cds to add to my collection, and I am very happy to announce that I chose this once. I first stumbled upon Evanescence a few years ago, and loved the concept of rock music mixed in with opera sort singing. They aren't the best example of course, but everyone starts somewhere. Later, I found Nightwish which I have to say is the most talented band by far. I sort of got stuck there as far as symphonic metal until I heard this cd. The great thing is, it is a mix of Evanescence and Nightwish. But, in reality they are their on band and don't resemble very much of either. The lead singer has a very beautiful and talented voice, and I cannot understand why anyone would say it's crap or annoying (I'm referring to some other reviews). The background music is done very well and they don't sound off key like most bands do. I really love how all of their songs sound different. I am not sure that I would call this full blown metal music, but it is definitely different from all of the other bands on TV. In conclusion, amazing CD with finally a singer who actually has a voice.
Within Temptation Live.......2007-06-26
I caught this band on tour with Lacuna Coil. Blew me away!!! Never heard of them prior to that evening. They played alot of the new stuff from this effort. I was really impressed with the lead singer, she has really great stage pressence and looks awesome as well. Hard to believ this band has been around ten years and I had'nt heard of them. Lots of videos on Youtube worth spending time on.
Oh My GOD!!! There is hope for music after all..........2007-06-17
This album gives me chills, You end the record with a full stomach. This is what melodic metal is. Silent Force was a wonderful album, and yet again they have pushed beyond Nightwish, Sirenia, Tristania, and Leaves Eyes. The orchestra is punchy in this album and has meat to it. From a musician's perspective, this is a masterpiece. Wonder when America will ever learn?

Worth the money .......2007-07-04
I looked everywhere for this CD. Trust me, you can't find it. That said it's one of the best CD's I have bought in the past few years. The vocalist is compelling, and the overall sound is great. They're a lot like Nightwish soundwise, but the lyrics are much better in my opinion. Worth the money any day.
I shouldn't have spoken so soon........2007-06-06
I've heard only a few songs from Within Temptation and had avoided them for years after. They didn't gain much attention from me because I wasn't impressed by what I heard (I was expecting a bombastic first impression). I was wrong to do so because I took a listen to them again not too long ago by watching the video for "Memories" and I became highly interested in them. I downloaded "Jillian" and after hearing an awesome intro, I was enraptured completely. I ordered this cd without hearing the rest of the tracks. I rarely do such a thing. "Pale" and "Memories" are gems.
This album has a high range of hauntingly imaginative atmosphere that few bands, Leaves' Eyes in particular, can produce. While having a solid theme to this album, W.T. put various emotions and atmospheres into each song. This is a good trait because it keeps us interested for a long time and usually has the listener repeating the tracks. Why didn't I see this sooner? I am always eager to hear different bands and different material.
This will go into my ever growing music collection.
I recommend Leaves' Eyes because, they too, are able to grow on to the listener, while keeping them in a prolonged trance. I regret the fact that I have avoided this band. Might I also mention that Sharon actually does have a wonderful voice. I have another lady to grace my tons of Anneke Van Giersbergen, Liv Kristine, and Cristina Scabbia vocal contributions.
Wonderful Music.......2007-05-07
For those who are drawn towards any music like Enigma, Enya, or Evanescence, this cd has alot of great tracks. I recommend it to anyone who has such taste in music.
Amazing!!.......2007-03-31
I can't really say I'm unbiased in this but then again that is what reviews are for. I was introduced to WT with this album and it is solid goodness throughout. WT are often compared to Evanescence but the vocals of Sharon, the lead of WT as well as the overall 'sound' of the band makes WT by far the better of the two.
If you are new to Within Temptation prepare for a whole new sound than I dare say anything you ever heard. There's a richness to the range of the instruments used and the vocals are out of this world. The voice is haunting and the songs stay with you. It is in short an amazing album and while this may not initially sound like your taste, try it out, I guarantee you will not regret it!
Outstanding!.......2007-03-15
I have been craving this CD since May of last year when I first heard about it, and now that I finally got it, I can say this confidently. Within Temptation is for real! They are probably the BEST Symphonic Rock group I have ever heard my entire life! This is the only CD in my collection (of all my CDs) that I can listen it all the way through and do it again. The songs are THAT good! This CD earns a perfect rating of 5 out of 5.

A Personal Favorite---BUT..........2007-05-05
...THIS SEMI IS COPY PROTECTED. To get around the copy protection don't install the utility program. It won't play in Media Player, but you can use other programs to do everything. This is very similar to Nightwish's Century Child. The band weaves numerous classical chord structures throughout the disc. The band is very talented and they really do push the limits here. The selections range from Ice Queen to In Perfect Harmony which almost sounds like Kenny Loggins' Return To Pooh Corner. Personally, I don't care for the last 2 bonus cuts, but otherwise this is a very compelling release.
Okay........2007-03-02
Not WT's best by any means, but at least this album has personality unlike "The Silent Force". Theres a few good songs such as "Our Farewell", "Ice Queen", "Mother Earth" and "Caged". But the rest of the CD does not follow. "Perfect Harmony" sounds like a pre-school, sing-along song, and "Never-Ending Story" sounds like a folk song gone horribly wrong. All in all, the album isn't terrible...but it isnt the best.
"Mother Earth".......2007-01-31
This is an excellent album. If you are a fan of "metal only" this is probably not for you. It is fully orchistrated and highly theatrical. The musical quality is fabulous. This is a theme album that will strongly appeal to affectations other than Christian. It's hard to put this group into a catagory. Theatrical Goth Metal is the closest I can come to a description. I personally love this CD and feel it is a very strong addition to my collection of Heavy Metal that I've been buying since 1964.
Remarkable Discovery.......2007-01-04
My wife has been after me to buy this for what must be two years now, since she heard the title track on the Matt Drudge Show. I bought it as a slightly late birthday present, and she has listened to it at least three times. Wonderful stuff.
what is this junk?.......2006-11-10
I'll give you the bottom line up front. Sharon den Adel, the lead vocalist, while very talented is not not suited for this type of work. She is blatantly flat or sharp at varying aspects of Within Temptation's songs including "Mother Earth." They do not even have very catchy riffs. Don't buy their album. If you like metal buy metal. If you like emo...kill yourself. If you want to be rocked, either make your own music or find something that does not suck on the surface as well as below it.

Customer Reviews:
This is symphonic metal.......2007-07-10
Within Temptation's The Heart of Everything is definitely a turn around from the band's previously released album and once again, the Dutch sextet takes Goth, metal and 14th Century renaissance music to a whole different level allowing it to perfectly accompany lead singer Sharon Den Adel's voice. In this album however, Sharon shows her versatility as a singer. There are times when she sings with immense amounts of power like in "The Howling" and others like a siren enchanting her subjects as in "The Cross". Sometimes she sings emotionally and sensitively like in the title track. The band has also enhanced "Our Solemn Hour" with clips from Winston Churchill's "Be Ye Men of Valor" speech making it sound much more 14th century.
The bands hit single "What Have You Done" with guest singer Keith Caputo has been a huge success all over Europe. With lyrics "I, I've been waiting for someone like you/But now you are slipping away...oh /Why, why does fate make us suffer/There's a curse between us, between me and you" reminds us of all those heartbreaks we have suffered when we thought we found the one. If you are new to the Goth/symphonic metal crowd or are just looking for something new, Within Temptation's The Heart of Everything is definitely for you.

One of the Best Albums to date.......2007-06-27
I really like this album. I highly recommend it. Musically it is awesome, the lyric are amazing, and you can really feel the passion in each song. There is not a weak song the album. Every track is great. My wife and I can't stop listening to it.
Unimpressive pop music.......2007-06-13
Unfortunately, like Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation has given in to the ... temptation (sorry, I had to) of making pop music that the masses will swarm to and just as quickly leave for the next thing. The songs I heard were completely forgettable. Lots of smash, crash, boom. No music. Granted, Sharon's vocals are more spectacular than ever. Not even a hint of the imperfection of the prior albums.
I saw them with Lacuna Coil a few weeks ago, and the songs they played off this album simply slid right through my head, and left me even more eager to get to their absolutely wonderful finale, the Mother Earth/Ice Queen combination. It was great to hear these songs played by a tighter, more mature band, with Sharon's voice at the level it has reached now. Stunning!
Awesome.......2007-06-10
This is the fourth cd by Within Temptation. And it is just as good as the others. The music and lyrics are breathtaking as is Sharon's vocals. Also the cd is interactive with your computer.
Best Yet.......2007-06-09
This is simply their best effort to date. This is my 3rd album from WT and I wasn't sure anything could top The Silent Force but Heart of Everything is awesome. I've listened to it every day since I got it (50 days now). Tracks such as The Howling and What Have You Done are pulse pounding. Frozen and The Cross are 2 of my favorites. Sharon's vocals are as great as ever and Robert's guitar work is simply kick@ss (especially on the title track). I can't wait to see them Live.

A TRUE FIVE STAR ALBUM IN A BEWILDERING SEA OF THE UNDESERVING.......2007-07-07
I know it's not going to happen but I think that a one to ten star rating system would make it far easier to rate an album more accurately. The reason I bring this up on this particular review is because I know that from time to time I too am guilty of giving a five star rating to an album that perhaps doesn't quite deserve it. However, this is not one of those times; this IS a five star album.
This album is first-rate in all respects, from Sharon's beautiful vocal performance and the guitars - which were all recorded in Holland, to the drumming - which was recorded in Belgium, to the full orchestra and choir - which were recorded in Russia, with each recording location being chosen for its individual capacity to contribute to this recording. It is obvious that no corners were cut in the production of this album, and it is clearly evident upon first listen, this album sounds magnificent. This album starts off brilliantly, has some even higher points along the way, and then ends even more brightly than it began. This is a very impressive and rewarding album, and has become one of my favorites. And for me this is very high praise to be sure, primarily because a band with a female singer will just about never make it to an album that I would rate as one of my favorites. However, this is certainly nothing against female singers, I just prefer the sound of a singer like Brian Johnson, Dio or Bruce Dickinson. (That doesn't make me gay does it?) And because of this preference if I had a single critical thing to say about this album it would be that at times Sharon's voice does get a bit on the high side. Conversely though, I am sure there are many that will enjoy this facet of her voice, and over and above any sound preference one might have, her vocals are always appropriate to the music. Furthermore, and far more worthy of mention is the fact that Sharon has an absolutely gorgeous voice, which easily rates as one of the best female Rock/Metal voices ever, not to mention she's pretty damn easy on the eyes. (Did I mention that I'm not gay? - Not that there's anything wrong with that.)
Now, as is natural I suppose, I also feel compelled to compare this album to their previous album, 2001's 'Mother Earth', which some say it is better. However, I would like to make it known that I actually own both albums, and have for quite some time now. Consequently I have no reservations in telling you that in my opinion, with all things carefully considered, this album is without question a better offering. But by only a small margin though, as 'Mother Earth' is also a fantastic album, and a fantastical album I might add, that in comparison I would rate 4.5 stars. I won't get into the differences here, because the differences are substantial, and it would take a bit of explaining. Just trust me when I say buy this album first, and if you like it (and you will like it) then buy 'Mother Earth'. But just be prepared to hear something much more imaginary and grandiose. FYI, I also own WT's latest album, 2007's 'The Heart Of Everything', another exceptional album which I would also rate 4.5 stars. And believe me, I am not indiscriminately doling out praise or being liberal or charitable, these albums have earned their ratings. I think three rock solid albums in a row is an amazing accomplishment, and damn near unheard of, but believe or not WT has done it, as there is no filler to be found on any of these albums! And this amazing accomplishment certainly did not happen by accident, as Sharon said in an interview; "we do feel a lot of artistic pressure to write beautiful music" - "we are very critical of our music, a great deal of our ideas and songs are thrown away, and that's why it always takes us so long to write a new album". This is true, WT has only been releasing a new album once every three years. Which granted is a long time between offerings, but this should only be seen as something admirable, and deserving of praise, as releasing an outstanding album every three years is without question a whole lot better than releasing a marginal album every year.
In conclusion, this album, 'The Silent Force' is one of those albums that I just can't recommend more highly. Buy it now! I honestly don't see how anything but delight could be found. (Did I mention that I'm not gay?) :-)
A Deal at Twice the Price.......2007-04-13
This CD was worth every penny: soulful, operatic, and yet still grounded in fire-and-fury, balls-out rock. "Stand My Ground" is a beautiful testimony to strenth and individuality, "Aquarius" gains points for the mythology reference, and "Angels" simply stunning. If you need a reason to by the CD, listen to "Angels."
Exellent! Within Temptation's best album........2006-11-16
If you liked Evanescence's album "Fallen", then you will probably like this album. Good rock beats combined with soaring, operatic vocals to make a musical experience that I never get tired of listening to.
My first WT cd.......2006-07-07
Being a huge fan of gothic metal bands such as Elis, Midnattsol, Leaves' Eyes and of course Nightwish, I have always wanted to check out Within Temptation but their cds aren't available in the states at regular prices. Thankfully I received a copy of the band's most recent album "Silent Force" from a friend. I immediately took to the music right away. It definitely goes without saying that Sharon Den Adel has a gorgeous voice. I personally thought her delicate vocals were eerily reminiscent of both Sarah Brightman as well as Liv Kristine of Leaves' Eyes/formerly of Theatre of Tragedy. The music in general is an epic proportion of metal laced with sumptuous goth melodies which often veered off into opera territory at times. I loved all the songs on the cd. All of the songs had a nice balance between the heavy metal guitar riffs and delicate goth melodies.
boring.......2005-08-26
After their great success with "Mother Earth," it seems that Within Temptation is struggling to find a niche in the music world. I loved "Mother Earth" and its fusion of musical genres. I eagerly anticipated the group's next CD. I was disappointed in this newest release. There are no songs that leave any lasting impression to speak of, and the songs tend to sound boring and repetitive after the first 3 cuts. For those of you who loved "Mother Earth," don't bother buying "Silent Force."

Very operettic though pissed I can't use on computer.......2007-06-29
I like the music but am not happy that only the mpg plays on the computer and I can't get to any of the songs with my winamp... If I had known that I would not have bought the CD...
Top band of their time........2007-06-22
Within Temptation is one of the best bands that I have heard in years. With Sharon den Adel's hypnotic voice, you are pulled into the song. The enchanting symphony ignites the hauntingly beautiful vocals.
"Memories," plays across the soul and burns you with the desire to remember and embrace life.
Simply amazing.
Beautiful and empty........2007-06-20
So, here's the thing: After the release of Enter and Mother Earth, Within Temptation decided to release a more commercially geared album that's completely different from their two previous releases. Now, it's not a bad thing when a band decides to recognize a more mainstream crowd; it's only a bad thing when they go about it in the wrong way- sort of like Within Temptation inevitably did.
Now, this LP has some magnificently composed songs that feature the wonderfully angelic and professionally dynamic vocals of Sharon Den Adel...and granted, most people such as myself can pop it into the CD player and listen to the whole thing through, completely hypnotized by its beautiful sound.
Unfortunately though, if you peel back the layers, there isn't much else to be found. Within Temptation has seemed to sacrifice the personality of their songs, that can be heard in their previous releases, for an almost too perfect and beautiful sound and cliché lyrics.
Honestly, the fact that Within Temptation has taken most of the heart out of their songs doesn't bother me too much, considering there is still a beautiful sounding album on hand...but I definitely wouldn't suggest this album to you if you are looking for something filled with deep meaning and lyrics that a writer has put their heart, sweat, and soul into.
powerful and enchanting.......2007-03-17
Silent Force, by Within Temptation, is a very strong CD. It displays a delightful mix of rock and symphony. The vocals are very strong and beautiful.
Where has this band been all my life?.......2007-03-14
My roommate discovered this band for us by watching fan videos online. We instantly fell in love with Angels and that one song was the basis for me purchasing this whole CD for her for Christmas. We listened through it together for the first time and we are hooked. The beautiful lilting voice of the main singer is haunting and the instrumentation is quite amazing. I was utterly impressed and have recommended this to most of my friends, several of whom are as addicted as I am to Within Temptation.

THis has to be the best album ever... Every song is absolute superb:) From the very beginning of the first song, through the ending of the last is pure magic. I'm never getting tired of listening to this CD.
Hard Southern Rock At Its Finest!.......2007-05-09
Wow! What a great sophomore effort from the Showdown! Very little screaming, especially when compared to their debut, and that's a good thing. This band is clearly finding its voice. Edgier and harder than traditional Southern rock (Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, 38 Special), The Showdown reveals maturity beyond their years. Begining with the raucous Fanatics and Whores, possibly the best track on the CD, Temptation hits on all cylinders throughout. The fact this is Christian Rock should not sway you from purchasing. These guys hold their own against any secular band out there. The Showdown rocks!
From an experienced Showdown fan..........2007-04-27
New album = good. Old album = metal masterpiece.
Ok so the new album is a huge change from A Chorus of Obliteration, and I, like many others, was at first a little unsatisfied after the first listen. I'm gonna say that a few songs got me snakebit, but probably more of a python bite as opposed to the full on venomous Black Mamba bite that the A Chorus of Obliteration will strike you with. The name of the game for the Showdown has always been High-Voltage heavy metal. It stands true, just not quite as true as it did on the first album. The songs are incredibly slower than the first and there is definitely a lack of screams. That said, I am not one of those metalcore guys who only gets their kicks of screaming. BUT David Bunton has the best scream known to man. Hands down. So I was hoping for more of that on this album and was slightly disappointed in the lack of it. Fact is, David just has an amazing voice all around. Every song on this album is full of his voice which compliments the songs perfectly, like peanut butter and jelly. If any of you have ever seen The Showdown live, you have experienced getting snake bit, lightning bolts and all, and this new cd doesn't quite fit their live shows as well as A Chorus of Obliteration, but it still gets the job done. Now I find the cd very satisfying, it just took me a while to deal with the total change of pace. The cd is a great listen all the way through (with the possible exception of "It Drinks from Me" i still can't get into that one). I highly recommend this record, but not quite as much as I recommend the first one. Buy them both.
P.S. I don't mean to bash anyone else, but please for the love of Pete, do NOT believe what someone else said about there being a dash of Nickelback in there.
Pax
Aww Sh*t.......2007-04-25
Well, lookie here, we have yet another band that decided to go ditch their previous sound and make a boring radio rock album. Okay, here's the problem, I picked up The Showdown's first album, "A Chorus of Obliteration", because it was a catchy metal album with some excellent leads. It took me a while to get into, but I enjoyed it. But here, with "Temptation Come My Way", you might as well be another copy of Avenged Sevenfold's "City of Evil", which is just bland formulatic arena rock. I downloaded this CD, because I wanted to hear how it would be. Well, it was deleted from my hard drive after I listened to every track on this album. I am so disappointed with this CD. If you're into southern rock or radio music, you'll cream yourselves over this. Old Showdown fans, don't even bother.
Simply Incredible..........2007-04-03
This album starts out totally different than their first effort, actually, the whole cd is a masterpiece. Let me say it like this, If you took Metallica, Def Leppard, Randy Rhodes, Joe Satriani, Eddie VanHalen, AC/DC, Ozzy, Megadeath, Iron Maiden with a drop of Skynard, threw them all in a blender, cranked the volume and ripped the knob off you would have the sound that emits from these guys. They start with Whores and Fanatics and melt every track, including the heavy southern bluesy sound of It Drinks From Me, this is a powerful album with a great message to boot. Their cover of Kerry Livgren's "Carry On My Wayward Son" is a great move on their part to show the diversity of this album. This is a must if you are looking for a great Christian Metal Album that will completely rock your socks off. I could continue but get it for yourself, you will not be sorry.

Wonderful.......2007-01-30
I have owned this CD for several years. I sat down last night and listened to it again - I am still amazed. This is a great album. Dim the lights, play it on a GOOD system and then sit back and enjoy. You will be amazed at the layers of sound and the soundstage. You can feel the presence of the musicians and the sound is almost 3D. Holly's voice just draws you in. One of my very favorites.
An amazing work of art.......2006-09-15
I can understand some reviewers not liking this album. I bought it and was shocked at how far off track Holly had gone. At one point I was sure she was headed into drugs. The disk sat on the shelf for months and then one day I was testing a new stereo and played it. Today it is one of my favorite disks of all time.
The more you listen, the more your stereo can render, the more you will feel the passion in this album. The pacing and verve of each song holds its own within context of the larger album. I read somewhere that Holly and crew tried to do the songs in one take to keep them edgy. They succeeded. Every song takes you to a place in your past, for better or for worse. There are some songs on this album I cannot listen to while others never let me go. Even parts of the nonsensicle cuts will take you somewhere.
I carry this disk with me on stereo testing trips. The cuts can sound mushy or flat or dry or endlessly deep and wonderful. There is a lot of material below where most subwoofers go and many subs simply mush all the bass together. There are also a lot of delicacies in the back of songs. I am always suprised how I will find some voice or tinkle in the back when a cut is played on a super-audiophile system. There is actually a fair amount of background discussion in many takes if you can render it.
This is an album heavy into the art side of music. It departs from Holly's torch song jazz style on her other great albums, "Don't Smoke in Bed" and "Blame it on my Youth". Grab a glass of Amaretto and slump into a big overstuffed chair.
P
Excellent, but makes you work for it..........2006-01-02
I have been a fan of the Holly Cole Trio for several years, and I must say, this recording just gets better and better the more I listen.
Having listened to all styles of the trio's music - blues, R&B, "pop", and...whatever you want to call Ms. Coles "unique" realizations of songs, this would fall moslty in that last category. Fortunately, it's where she (and the trio) excels the most.
If you are new to The Holly Cole Trio, they are a jazz/based ensemble that excels in REALLY digging into the zeitgeist of dark, poignant, or even slightly scary song writing. In other words, the writing of songwriters such as Tom Waits. They both are from the "meloncholy" category of personality types (rather than phlegmatic, choleric, or sanguine. The "sanguines" are the folks in the other reviews that complain that this recording should be more "peppy!" They just don't get it, and that's OK. Try Britney Spears or Bare Naked Ladies - very peppy! This recording is for the "meloncholies", or those that desire to peer into that side of their personalities)
MS. Cole has the uncanny ability to COMPLETELY own a lyric and all its depth of meaning. Then, she has the voice to interpret it with exquisite nuance and laser-like delivery. Make no mistake - every nuance she brings to the song is carefully planned and executed, down to her breathinig, lip smacking, growls, and even out-of-tune delivery. Her method - she tends to slow things down a bit, thin out the arrangement (sometimes just her and the bass), and then deliver the "story" of the song as if she had sidled up, placed her arms around your neck, looked you unwaveringy in the eye, and then begins to sing. I haver rarely ever had repeated repeated shivers run up and down my spine listening to a recorded vocalist, but it happens here, and more with each listening. Its at once both an intimate and mind-expanding experience.
ONE CAVEAT - this is an amazingly rendered recording, as are most of her works. Its the reason Audio Installation professionals ALWAYS have their Holly Cole CD's with them when they test out their work - the stark clarity of her voice, the amazing depths of the bass (down to 10hz), the purity of the piano micing, and the very present rendering of the rare guest musicians are all reference-standard. Because of their detailed sparseness, much is lost if listening on a a less-than-stellar system. Part of the talent of the trio lies in the wonderful subtleties they bring to their performances, and much of it is lost in typical "boom box" systems, car systems, or computer systems. I believe this is why some folks may be led to say things such as "needs more pep!', or God forbid, "This is boring".
If you have at least some meloncholy tendencies, or are a fan ot Tom Waits, or like the song stylists of the early part of the last century, you will love this recording. Buy it, and let Ms. Cole and her trio take you places you may have never been before.
Save your money.......2005-09-25
I have owned Don't Smoke in Bed for 12 years. When I wore the cassette out I replaced it with a cd. I really love the simplicity and earthiness of Holly Cole's voice. Because I liked EVERY song on the other album, I bought this without first listening to it; as a result, I was sadly dissapointed. I would have rated it lower, but there are a couple good songs on it.
Smoky Jazz Interpretations.......2003-09-24
I just ran across this today, and I'm blown away by it. This is an absolutely terrific album, and anyone who likes Norah Jones or similar music should order this immediately. It uses mostly simple jazz-combo arrangements that give center stage to Cole's sultry voice -- and her voice manages to do Waits' brilliant songwriting justice. This isn't simply an album of covers, it is a collection of interpretations in the finest vocal jazz tradition.
I'm a long-time Tom Waits fan, but I was previously unfamiliar with Holly Cole. Waits' songs are well-suited to new interpretations, as is apparent on Frank's Wild Years when he performs 2 different arrangements of a couple of songs, or on Big Time, where he presents strikingly different arrangements of several songs, most notably "Telephone Call From Istanbul." Given that plus the haunting poetry of his best lyrics, a jazz songbook of original interpretations makes at least as much sense for Waits' work as for that of any living songwriter.
Cole's expressive intrepretations deliver the goods, too. "I Don't Wanna Grow Up" receives a slow, haunting arrangement that provides a gorgeous contrast to the uptempo original. She cleans up "Frank's Theme," providing a simpler but more dramatic rendition that bring out the emotions in the song much more effectively than the accordion-drenched original. Cole's voice brings a smoky swing to "Tango Til They're Sore." And her sultry version of "Temptation" alone would justify buying this album.

A vibrant tribute to MGM's legendary confluence of brains, talent, hard work, ambition--and dare we say it?--massive egos, Singin' in the Rain long ago took its rightful place among the first rank of the studio's dizzying catalog of film musicals. This double-disc, 46-track 50th-anniversary edition features all of the film's familiar songs, as well as numerous outtakes and extended versions, many culled directly from the film's original recording masters. Its second disc also chronicles the film's clever--if studio imposed--self-referential musical gambit of recycling a slate of Arthur Freed/Nacio Herb Brown songs from Metro's first decade by including 14 of the originals, including performances by Jeanette McDonald, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, and Freed himself. Featuring a dozen previously unreleased recordings and an illustrated booklet containing the insightful reminiscences of the film's original writers, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, it's the ultimate musical companion to one of cinema's magical, enduring masterpieces. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:
the perfect movie.......2007-03-10
My old Gene did it: the perfect movie, the perfect american history, the perfect music. Some people think musicals are "B" movies. I say them: look about the dream, the performance, the music.
Who can say what is beatiful? Look at faces of Gene and Stan during the shooting on the set: whole concentration and attention for everything.
This is a unique moment in their story, and in the story of cinema.
Unforgettable.
I LOVE MY FAVORITE SONG, AND THANKS TO THIS CD I CAN LISTEN TO IT ALL DAY LONG!!.......2007-01-28
I love Singin' in the Rain. It was the movie that made me like musicals, not those simple, mellow movies like South Pacific and the Sound of Music, but REAL musicals, with people like Fred Astaire or Eleanor Powell tapping their hearts out, or great singers like Frances Langford or Dick Powell putting over a song like they mean it.The Singin' in the Rain 2disc special edition introduced me to my favorite movie, the Broadway Melody of 1936, the MOST AMAZING MOVIE EVER! So I was so glad when my parents got me the soundtrack to Singin' in the Rain, and besides the music of the 1951 versions of the Nacio Herb Brown/Arthur Freed, there are also the original versions of the songs in their original movies. I am so glad that Rhino put the duet of Robert Taylor and June Knight singing I've Got a Feelin' You're Foolin' on this CD set! It's my favorite song, and now I can listen to it! Hooray!! It's the best song EVER!! There's also vocals of Charles King singing the Broadway Melody, which is great! And many more, like Bing Crosby, Frances Langford, Jeanette MacDonald, and other great singers I can't think of right now. This CD set is great, the sound is nice and un-staticy (mostly), there are 30-plus songs, and the price is phenomenal. I love my favorite song, and now I can listen to it all day long!! Yay! :)
Wonderful Soundtrack to a Wonderful Movie.......2006-06-16
Yes, this is it--the first real musical I ever saw. Okay, I saw "Wizard of Oz" and "The Sound of Music", and I love both of those musicals dearly. I had even seen "My Fair Lady." I thought musicals were all like those. Until this one. I had never seen such dancing. And this CD causes me to relive the joy of the musical each time I listen to it. Complete with the tap sounds. I love that they included even the deleted songs. Now we just need a DVD that has all the deleted scenes in context. But the studio probably threw all those away. Oh well, our imaginations can take care of what is missing.
Great CD.......2006-03-20
This is a great CD of music for your family to listen to. Our family enjoys it very much.
musical memories.......2006-03-14
I enjoyed this CD very much, as I remember seeing the movie years ago. I grew up watching MGM musicals and this was one of the best. I loved all of the wonderful songs that came from this movie. Great sound on this CD.
