Winner of the Down Beat Magazine Jazz Band of the Year for Student Awards in 1992, 1993, and 1994..(the CD was made in 1995) the students from North Texas State (considered one of the two or three largest and best music schools in the country) perform like inspired professionals, using big band book arrangements by Billy Byers, Quincy Jones, Neal Hefti, Thad Jones and others, the musicians play in very cohesive horn ensemble sections, propulsive rhythm section, and straight ahead post-bop solos with very creative melodic invention. If you loved Atomic Basie and Mel Lewis-Thad Jones big band..you will find yourself at home with this CD..which has excellent recorded sound as well.
