Product Description
The Howard Alden/Dan Barrett Quintet, a classic group that has been performing together for more than 15 years, is caught here in a peak, swinging performance at a live concert in Florida. Leaders Howard Alden and Dan Barrett are both major stars on the jazz circuit with a wide following and the CD contains a plus with the added song-stylings of Terrie Richards.
'Live in '95' is the ABQ's first new record since their Concord recording days in the late '80s and early '90s, and their Grammy-nominated record with Bobby Short.

Plucked from a wet afternoon of busking Bizet and Puccini to passersby on the Piazza in Covent Garden in the spring of 2001, soprano Rebecca Knight and mezzo Karen England soon found themselves singing in slightly larger venues: the FA Cup and Champions League soccer finals. That the management company doing the plucking had recently performed a similar Cinderella crossover act for Russell Watson offered portent, and indeed the Babes--the moniker began as a joke--were soon on their way to this recording debut. The marketing shtick and its soccer connections may offend purists, but it's the football hooligans that the Babes are trying to win over here; can Borodin soothe the savage Manchester United fan? Their classically trained voices mesh gloriously, with England's warm mezzo showing particular character in her solo turns.
The repertoire choices here cover material that may already be familiar to fans of Charlotte Church (i.e., Delibes "Flower Duet") and other crossover acts, but they do include some pleasant surprises, like Offenbach's Barcarolle from The Tales of Hoffmann and "You Live On in My Heart," a reworking of Ennio Morricone's enchanting Cinema Paradiso theme with lyrics by Knight. But in a rush toward the musical middle of the road, it's the productions themselves that sometimes overwhelm the Babes with bathos ("Ave Maria"), hollow thunder ("Aida 2002"), and electro club kitsch (the 'Vibe Tribe' mix of "Flower Duet"). Former Art of Noise mainstay Anne Dudley's tastefully restrained coloring of Tchaikovsky's "1001 Nights" is one of the notable exceptions. They're babes, they sing opera--with fair promise--for the masses, and if they turn one in a hundred from football hooliganism to a well-mannered appreciation of Grieg and Dvorák, won't it all have been worth it? --Jerry McCulley

simply beautiful, so just enjoy it.......2007-06-11
my daughter has taught me to love opera. this immediately captured me. the Babes' voices blend so beautifully. I love it! who cares about Puccini, Classic Opera, blah, blah, woof, woof. I love this album
Sloppy renditions and amateurish.......2007-05-15
I heard one of the selections on Sirius and liked it so I bought the CD. Upon hearing the entire CD I was disappointed that the only selection I liked was the one that prompted me to buy the product. The voices are nice but they are simply adding voice to opera masterpieces that do not fit. They are certainly not of the caliber of Sarah Brightman or Charlotte Church and don't look for that. Their sound is mellow, dim and without the emotion that does an inservice to the opera pieces they sing. I found the CD lackluster and in all honestly very "amateurish".
Great songs reinvented, with a twist.......2006-09-30
Expanding upon the recent interest in Gregorian chant fusion as well as rich-voiced solo vocalists such as Josh Groban, operatic soprano Rebecca Knight and mezzo soprano Karen England offer full-vibratoed, somewhat modernized interpretations of favorite classical themes. Backed by chorus, orchestras, keyboards and drums, they draw from such diversely satisfying works as Puccini's opera "Madame Butterfly," Grieg's "Piano Concerto in a minor," Dvorak's "New World Symphony," Mendelssohn's "Midsummer Night's Dream," Orff's "Carmina Burana," Delibe's "Lakme," Beethoven's "Ode to Joy," Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite," Offenbach's "The Tales of Hoffman," Schubert's "Ave Maria," and Verdi's "Aida." Some of the arrangements are fairly traditional, while others are noticeably enhanced. The emphasis tends to be on pretty pieces with sweet melodies, though a few are more intense in nature (#1, 4, 5, 15 and 17). A couple of pop songs, still sung in operatic style, are thrown in for good measure, although they don't have the same appeal and mystique as the old favorites. All of the selections feature both vocalists together, singing in lovely, close harmony. The arrangers of this elegantly hip music include Jon Cohen, Noely, Frank Gallagher, Deni Lew and Anne Dudley, with multi-language lyrics (for the adaptations of instrumental works) by Rebecca Knight and others. I have to admit that I occasionally found myself longing for the modern additions to be more consistently interesting and distinctive--in other words, equaling the artistry of the classics that they're accompanying. Track #1, which really shines, is a well-done example. Alternately, perhaps the source songs might have been better off left in their pure, original styles rather than watered down with schmaltzy, predictable underpinnings that don't add much to the music. But like Enigma did for medieval chant, the Opera Babes are endeavoring to bring some wonderful, time-tested music to a wider audience, fusing it with modern idioms in way that is artistic and generally appealing. For more opera fusion, compare the work of Amici Forever (a group of five singers, both male and female), and the oddly packaged but similar-in-concept album "Coco de Mer" by Adam Plack.
Praise for Beyond Imagination.......2006-02-26
What I really enjoyed about this album was its distinctive sound and arrangement of the material. I enjoy classically performed opera and was surprised how much I like the Opera Babes' versions. Of course, the wonderful voices added immensely to the high quality of this product.
Angelic voices to soothe the soul.......2006-02-17
For all the glorious music out there, this CD has really made an impression on me. These two gifted ladies are accomplished opera singers who have the talent and savy to appeal to the younger generation that might shy away from classic opera as we knew it 50 years (or longer) ago. The refreshing addition of upbeat background brings this genre of music right into the new Millenium. Silky renditions and lofty scales make for an unforgettable listening experience. I give this duo 5 stars and hope to hear more from them in the near future. Classic music will forever be listened to and new voices and renditions should keep it eternally fresh and immensely enjoyable.

Swift, Unabashedly Romantic, Interpretation of Dvorak's Most Popular Symphony, But Is It The Best?.......2007-05-14
The Dvorak Symphony No. 9 "From the New World" has been one of the most widely performed and recorded orchestral works, ever since it received its world premiere with the composer conducting the New York Philharmonic Orchestra at Carnegie Hall back in the 1890s. Indeed, there are many legendary recordings made of it, with some of the most notable ones consisting of Rafael Kubelik's celebrated Deutsche Grammophon recording with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Fritz Reiner's with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Istvan Kertesz's with the London Symphony Orchestra, Christoph von Dohnannyi's with The Cleveland Orchestra and Georg Solti's with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. More recently, there have been great recordings from the likes of Ivan Fischer with the Budapest Festival Orchestra, Claudio Abbado with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Sir Colin Davis with the London Symphony Orchestra, Kurt Masur with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, and Nikolaus Harnoncourt with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra; of these my two personal favorites are Masur's, and especially, Harnoncourt's. To this obviously crowded field of superb recordings, we should add too Mariss Jansons and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra? But is this recent recording from the Concertgebouw's new recording label one which should be regarded as the definitive version? The answer is yes, but only if your sole criterion is superlative sound quality.
My favorite Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra recording of this symphony remains Harnoncourt's, simply because he emphasized not only swifter tempi, but leaner orchestral textures which are a subtle blend of both late 19th Century Romantic orchestral traditions and Dvorak's own deep abiding interest in both Bohemian and American folk song traditions. Here, all Jansons seems to offer are swifter tempi - most notably an incredibly fast first movement which is much faster than virtually all of the aforementioned recordings - and a rather lush, Romantic interpretation which minimizes Dvorak's emphasis on folk songs, in favor of the score's vast orchestral textures. While the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra's playing is first-rate, especially from its strings and winds, regrettably, that aspect of this recording seems less interesting simply because of Jansons' rather routine interpretation of Dvorak's score. If you're interested in acquiring a splendid recording of this orchestra performing Dvorak's 9th Symphony, then your choice ought to be Harnoncourt's, which still has superb sound for a late 1990s digital recording. Otherwise, I would strongly advise you to consider the others I've mentioned, with highest honors going to Kubelik's, Reiner's, Solti's, Masur's, Fischer's, Davis's, Dohannyi's, and Abbado's recordings.
And Suddenly at the Top of the Competition...........2005-10-11
Mariss Jansons at the helm of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra seems to be a marriage made in heaven. Though there are countless recordings of the redoubtable Symphony No. 9 'From the New World' of Antonin Dvorák (including some superb and timeless performances), suddenly all others pale in the splendor of this new Hybrid SACD release from Rco Live. Jansons goes for the majesty of the work, allowing all of the folk tune influences that are the core of Dvorák's works to sing but never to take front stage form the grand architectural sweep of the symphony.
The brilliance of the Royal Concertgebouw is legendary and here it virtually glows in the sonics of the performance. Each section is exceptional and first desk solos are among the finest on record. There is an urgency to the rapid movements and a warm mellow flow to the Adagio and the Largo movements. Jansons apparently has found the comunicative niche with this orchestra and we can only expect great things to follow.
This is a wondrous recording of a symphony too often dismissed as 'too popular'. Recommended without reservation. Grady Harp, October 05
Broad and unabashedly Romantic.......2005-10-09
This performance of Dvorak's Ninth Symphony by the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest under Mariss Jansons takes it more as a Romantic symphony in the vein of Schubert, underplaying the lilt and dance-rhythms of Bohemia/Czechia, Dvorak's own beloved homeland, focussing more on large, Romantic gestures. As such, I believe it couldn't be played more beautiful, and with a feeling for the over-arching, grand melodic lines, but there certainly are alternatives that are at least as good, like for example Rafael Kubelik's recording with the Berliner Philharmoniker (1973).
I guess that first and foremost this performance is for aficionados of the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest under its new chief conductor (of which I am certainly one). Anyhow, this is a beautiful, lushly recorded and nicely idiosynchratic performance.

Peculiar Amazon indexing.......2007-06-08
A search for Deep Purple's "Smoke on [in] the water," brought up this title. I rate it only #1 because I could not locate the "Smoke on the Water" listing. Amazon seems to be having an indexing problem.

This complete 12-disc survey of The Psalms of David from St. Paul's Cathedral is both a remarkable historical record of Anglican chant at its finest and an astonishing musical experience. Contained here are all 150 psalms in their traditional English garb from the 1549 Book of Common Prayer, with revised or entirely new musical settings as published in The New St. Paul's Cathedral Psalter, edited by the choir's musical director John Scott, itself a revision of the 1875 Cathedral Psalter. As such, these recordings represent the very backbone of the Anglican liturgy, but even a casual listener will be in no doubt that they also offer music that is both contemplative and richly varied when removed from its liturgical context.
The art of "pointing"--or setting--psalm texts has been essayed by many English composers, from William Croft through the Wesleys and William Boyce in earlier times to the great flowering in the late 19th century under Stainer and Barnby, with further contributions from Parry, Stanford, Elgar, Howells, and a host of choirmasters and organists, including Sir David Willcocks and John Scott himself. All are represented here. Recorded throughout in the vast acoustic of their cathedral, the St. Paul's choristers enunciate the words precisely, backed by inventive though unobtrusive organ accompaniment. Taken individually, it's possible to isolate moments when the choir seem to drag their feet or fail to give due weight to the words (Psalm 125, "They that put their trust in the Lord," seems far too subdued, for example), and the massive Psalm 119 is awkwardly split across discs 10 and 11, but overall this set is nothing less than a document of invaluable cultural and musical significance. --Mark Walker

Brilliant Recordings.......2007-06-11
In our view the changes in pointing, and excellent selection of chants, give deeper meanings to the Psalms than those achieved in the "standard?" Parish Psalter.
We found great Spirituality and a wonderful sense of Worship whilst listening to this set. This is often sacrificed for brilliance of musical performance in other recordings.
Unfortunately the "St.Paul's Psalter" is not available (June 2007) but we are told that a new print run may happen within 12 months. This would be a most valuable companion to the recordings when and if it becomes available.
A- for effort.......2006-02-23
This grand undertaking deserves high praise, and I'm struck, listening to chant after chant, how much Anglican chant as it used to be until the changes of the 70s was one of the great Victorian contributions to English life and art. For anyone who wants to hear almost the entire repertoire of Anglican chant deployed in singing the whole book of Psalms, this is an unrivalled source. It is wonderful, too, to hear the Coverdale translation: you realize what the churches have lost by abandoning the proper & regular singing of the Psalms. So one is immensely grateful to Hyperion for putting out this recording. It's not perfect, though.
The rhythmic pacing, though a little slow for my taste, is steady and sensitive, the diction clear, and the organ accompaniment superb (Providing an expressive accompaniment to a choir singing in 4-part free rhythm, and improvising descants to the melody at the same time, isn't easy). And of course there's the cavernous acoustic of St. Paul's, very impressive in the more thunderous psalms. Unfortunately, though, the "forward" style favored for the St. Paul's boys produces a sound that's unpleasantly chesty in the lower registers and reedy in the higher ones. The poorly integrated choral sound caused by this kind of voice-production can be downright unpleasant for anyone used to, or trained in, the classic English choral style. In fact, one has to wonder why this choir was chosen for such a huge project: even allowing for the near-universal decline in standards of vocal training for boys in England, better sounds than this can still be heard.
What can you say?.......2003-01-03
I almost hate to criticize this terrific thing. After all, where else can you get all 150 Psalms in a single collection sung by one of the world's great choirs?
How much do I like it? I bought it *twice*. I originally bought all the CDs separately, before they came out with a single boxed set. They were stolen from my car (and, God willing, maybe they converted some poor thief to Anglican Cathedral Music and got him into church). After they were stolen, I immediately bought them again.
One of the great pleasures of life is listening to the Morning and Evening Psalms while driving to and from work, and making listening a regular feature of Morning and Evening Prayer.
So what's the criticism? The sound is a bit muddy, so the words can be rather difficult to understand without reading along (which is a real problem when driving), and personally, I prefer the Psalter from the 1979 BCP instead of the old one, from the Great Bible. But that's unreasonable. They ARE a British choir after all. Those are the only criticisms.
Anyhow, if you have a taste for choral cathedral music, this is genuinely indispensible. St. Paul's has given the world a great blessing.
