Quartet expands upon the "dream pairing" - begun by guitarist Pat Metheny and pianist Brad Mehldau on their 2006 Nonesuch collaboration, Metheny/Mehldau. This time they incorporate the members of Mehldau's trio, bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard, into a breathtakingly eclectic set, which ranges from the airy, pastoral "Don't Wait" to straight-up rocking in the slowly building "Towards the Light." Last year, London's Evening Standard described Metheny and Mehldau as "graceful, lyrical improvisers...It's a duo performance that deserves to tour." Now the pair is indeed hitting the road, along with Mehldau's two band-mates, in March for a month of shows throughout North America in support of Quartet. The 11 tracks that comprise Quartet were cut during the week-length December 2005 session at Manhattan's Right Track that yielded Metheny /Mehldau, a recording date that, over time, will surely be considered a landmark in contemporary jazz. On Quartet, each artist contributes original solo compositions as well as their first co-written piece, "A Night Away." The group also reworks Mehldau's "Fear and Trembling," which originally appeared on House On Hill, Mehldau's final outing with his previous trio lineup. It also interprets Metheny's "Marta's Theme," from his score to the 1998 Italian film, A Passage to Paradise. This is really a revelation of sorts, beautifully produced new-age jazz by Pat Metheny. I had liked some of his earlier efforts and lost patience after a while but he has managed to renew his approach quite a bit. The music is sonically perfect and the whole disc is exceptional not just one or two tracks, Beautiful. I may have to buy the first one also.

a musical delicacy of cold cut jazz. well balanced between slow and mellow songs and more upbeat numbers that simply jazzles your mind.
one down side, some of the numbers are to short, leave you wanting for more, well the whole cd creates this entire empty space that craves more of that jazzy jazz; some of the songs has the beautiful, slow evolution from downbeat tempo but every melodious moving toward some really funky stuff (not as in funk but funky as in phat)but ending all too soon.

Mehldau and Metheney have collaborated such that their work on this cd is continuous with their previous but separate efforts while still being a creative and enjoyable work. Most of the tracks have, as their foundation, Mehldau's incredible sense of balance between the complex and the simple. Mehldau's sense of when and how to fill--and not fill--in the spaces continues to be an incredible strength of his approach. Metheney's contribution is to ride this gentle wave with his usual mix of engaging accessibility. Metheny's use of a synthesizer effect allows him to explore two of the tunes more freely which provides the most satisfying tracks on the album (5 & 9). What the album lacks in explosiveness (check out Mehldau's version of "Solar" on the album Art of the Trio Vol IV) it makes up in subtle inventiveness.

"Recorded in the same all-originals sessions as last October's Metheny / Mehldau collaborative debut from guitarist Pat Metheny and pianist Brad Mehldau, "Quartet" picks up where the first disc left off, albeit on a slightly quieter note. While Metheny / Mehldau focused on the duo chemistry of the co-leaders (only two of 10 tracks featured Mehldau's trio teammates, bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard), the new set tips the scales in favor of the foursome (seven of 11). Again, simpatico chemistry is on exhibit as Metheny and Mehldau converse with intuitive sensitivity on such passionate dialogues as "Long Before," "So Much Music in the Air" and "Sound of Water," the last of which an impressionistic beauty graced by Metheny's 42-string guitar. Highlights include the easy-going, oblique "Santa Cruz Slacker" and "Towards the Light," charged with Metheny's synth guitar dynamics and a surging rhythmic chug in the midsection".( Billboard - Dan Ouellette).
This is the eagerly awaited sequel to an album that exposed an unexpectedly deep empathy between two very different jazz stars last year. Pianist Mehldau, so hyperactive and complex on his own, emerged as a remarkably supportive and creative accompanist, freeing guitarist Metheny's guitar and guitar-synth to take flight in their lightest, airiest way. This audience-friendly process now involves Mehldau's trio, with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard, in seven of the 11 original songs.Metheny's change of guitars from electric to acoustic could perhaps jar the senses slightly, but here, rooted by the rhythm section these changes pay off and excite rather than confuse the listener. The pace is varied, there are constant flourishes and changes of tempo and tone to keep your attention and the standard of playing from all present is just incredible. These guys understand pacing and texture, they let a track build it's own internal drama and follow the tune all the way.
Tranquil ballads and serpentine dance-themes ride latin and swing beats in an absorbing package that goes on world tour this spring : this is just a fantastic album of incredible musicianship which never loses sight of the primacy of the melody. Neither intrument is allowed to dominate the other - neither tries to dominate - but instead both weave together in an almost symbiotic way.

Pat Metheny is one of my favorite artists of all time. I really admire his song writing and his whole approach to music. Brad Mehldau is also another favorite of mine. Both men are modern players who are quite unlike anyone before them, but are still very down to earth. Their playing in straight ahead situations is exceptional, and when they push the envelope, the outcome can be very rewarding, or not so memorable.

I first heard about their first collaboration when it came out. Considering these two artists are my favorite current musicians on their instrument, I was excited. I was a little skeptical with the abscence of bass and drums, so I didn't buy it. When I saw that a new collaboration called Quartet came out, obviously including Mehldau's trio with Larry Grenadier and Jeff Ballard, (also two of my favorites) I when out and bought this.

I expected that modern folky loose and unrestricted sound that Metheny gets on his trio albums, and other collaboration efforts, and the way Mehldau sounds on his trio recordings. With the first track, I was awarded this. The first track is what I expected. A great melody with a nice rhythm and great improvisations. I didn't stay too interested as the cd progressed.

My first problem is why would they call this album Metheny Mehldau Quartet when bass and drums are missing on almost half of the selections?!

Some of Metheny's albums that I've come to love, I wasn't to hip to when I first heard them; example Metheny & Scofield's I Can See Your House From Here, and Pat's Trio 99-00. I guess this is going to be the case with this album. I gave this cd about three or four listens so far, and I'm about to go turn it on again after I write this.

The last few times I heard it, I just felt the music was just falling back into some dreary uninspired music. With the exception of the first track, I wasn't hearing real beautiful melodies, and the quartet wasn't well represented. I'm not going to make any final statements about this cd yet. And if the Metheny Mehldau Quartet was in town, I'd definately go see them.

I hope they make another one and do some of Metheny's old compositions like Are You Going With Me, Unity Village, James, Go Get It, Travels, Have You Heard, etc...

Boasting the first jazz instrumental to sell a million copies, the Paul Desmond-penned "Take Five," Time Out captures the celebrated jazz quartet at the height of both its popularity and its powers. Recorded in 1959, the album combines superb performances by pianist Brubeck, alto saxophonist Desmond, drummer Joe Morrello and bassist Gene Wright. Along with "Take Five," the album features another one of the group's signature compositions, "Blue Rondo a la Turk." This is a reissue of the 1959 studio session. Although Blue Rondo and Take Five are the signature pieces for the Quartet, the other tracks are in keeping with the innovative time signatures 5/4, 6/4 and variations of 4/4 and 3/4 time. What else can you say except it's a classic and belongs in evryone's collection.

This Cd is just GREAT and such a Jazz classic! The re-mastered version of this Album is absolutely wonderful---sounding so crisp and sharp!

The songs speak for themselves, as they are some of Brubeck's most famous hits.

This is a highly recommended re-mastered version of Dave's TIME OUT Album!

5 out of 5 stars This CD Changed The Rules.......2007-06-16

This album changed the rules in jazz in two important ways. First, it introduced atypical time signatures to jazz performers. Performers were pushing ever other musical limit, including harmony (Miles Davis, Bill Evans, . . .), melody (John Coletrane, Eric Dolphy, . . .) and song structure in general (Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, . . .). 4/4 and 3/4 time signatures were already optional in contemporary classical music and some ethic music. Brubeck opened up this fertile opportunity for the jazz world (and later rock like Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull and Rush). Perhaps more remarkable was the fact that this album proved that the public was receptive to this new approach to popular music. Brubeck went pioneering and returned with no lethal arrows in him.

The best part about this album is that this new technique was not just a novelty; it was a path to creating timeless compositions like Take Five and Blue Turk a la Rondo. My favorite things about Brubeck are his range of expression (from cool and understated to highly muscular), and the unique voice of Paul Desmond's saxophone. Desmond's instrument has the bird-like sweetness of Charlie Parker combined with the lazer-focused tone of John Coletrane. The alternating solo voices really injects life and breath into the group.

The use of different time signatures did not did not get embraced as widely as one might expect in a genre built on creativity. Some felt that odd time signatures did not "swing" (although Brubeck and others disproved that), some may not have felt comfortable with or inspired by this new approach, and I suspect that the distinctiveness of this contribution by a white man made it "uncool" among many jazz musicians to do something that sounded "like Brubeck". The happy side effect for Brubeck is that this album stands out in jazz like few other works.

Sony/Columbia did this superb sounding disc very well in this SACD transfer! This rivals the original edition Lp for lovely sound, and I think it is among the best single layer SACD's out there (Mingus ah um is THE best to these ears!). You know (or should know) the music, so don't hesitate getting it on SACD! I should add I am not into 5.1 for music. My sound review refers only to 2 channel stereo sound.

Every year sees a crop of newly found jazz gems, but rarely are listeners treated to anything as special as this 1957 concert recording of Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane, which was accidentally discovered in an unmarked box by a Library of Congress engineer early in 2005. Until now, fans could only dream of hearing these two immortals play together beyond the three studio tracks they left behind. But here they are, hitting their stride at an all-star benefit concert, basking in the chemistry they had developed in Monk's quartet during the preceding weeks at New York's Five Spot. Coltrane's playing is a revelation. He's both an inspired accompanist and a galvanizing soloist, taking the music to new heights with his bold, brilliantly challenging, and sometimes jaw-dropping phrases, note clusters, and blasts of power. Sharing with Coltrane a newfound sense of freedom following the personal and professional troubles that had plagued them both, Monk is clearly tickled to be in the tenorist's presence, injecting humorous commentaries and otherwise asserting his eccentric genius as a pianist. I can't believe this sat in a box and the library of congress all this time! It makes me wonder what other gems they got in deep freeze. Thank Jeezy they found it. I love listening to this when I drive around town with the windows down on a summer night. Good, good, good. Hear it, love it, get it.

This recording, unearthed after nearly fifty years on old tapes found at the Library of Congress, is a national treasure that speaks to all of us, after two generations. Surely this marks the work as art in its most universal sense: something with permanence, that will (I hope) last through the ages. I understand from a little research that Billy Holiday participated in this same concert, and regret that that recording has been lost! But this one, in my opinion, gets five stars.

I've got a small but impressive jazz library, jazz has been a recent addition to my musical tastes. I'm not the biggest Coltrane fan, I prefer Cannonball Adderly and some others less inclined to go wailing away. I do not like Coltrane's A Love Supreme. Monk and Coltrane team up here with a very enjoyable performance. Excellent for background music or dedicated listening. The fidelity is superb, very high quality. Only negative is it's mono. Jazz fans will love this.

It's funny what people find when they clean out closets. The people at Carngie Hall found a jewel and something unique and pure. A great addition to any jazz aficionado's collection. In reality a must have if you like jazz at all.

Guitarist John Abercrombie has been one of those ECM heritage artists over the years, helping the label define its cerebral and sometimes austere vision of creative jazz. Abercrombie's playing is clean, melodic, and subtle--he reaches beyond jazz to incorporate bits of classical, folk, blues, and rock. Here he's complemented by an amazing group--drummer Joey Baron, bassist Marc Johnson, and violinist Mark Feldman--for the third time. John Abercrombie is one of the most influential guitarists in jazz history. I have listened to this man's guitar playing since he played with Billy
Cobham. I am not a guitarist. I can only say he has an incredible sense
of touch & dynamics. I recently had the pleasure of seeing him play with
this quartet in Birdland, NYC.They were fantastic. I thought 'Gateway II'
was one of my favorites of his. This is way up there (all this groups
recordings come highly recomended).from 'Cosmic Chicken (somebody please
release that)to Arcade,the organ trios, directions,etc..listen to this
man & the people he surrounds himself with. You wont EVER be disappointed.

The music on this release is meandering and uninspired...too much violin, not enough guitar. I really don't know what the appeal of a violin on a jazz album, especially with 2 other stringed instruments, has for some but for me it's grating. If you want to hear some INVOLVING quartet music, try the 1st quartet from the 70s (QUARTET, ARCADE or M) which unfortunately ECM, maddeningly, refuses to re-issue on CD (strangely, a gap in Abercrombie's catalog that may remain that way). Some of them can be found on Japanese imports but at premium prices. WHY? Who knows but John's in a rut here ... for some exciting recent Abercrombie, try STRUCTURES, a trio release from '06. Otherwise, pass on this.

John Abercrombie has recorded prolifically for the ECM label since the early '70s. His output has been very thoroughly documented, while at ECM, he also performed as a session player on countless albums. Most notably with Kenny Wheeler, Ralph Towner, Colin Wolcott, Jack DeJohnette, Charles Lloyd, among others. His own compositions and guitar playing are very melodic and lyrical. His improvisational playing is some of the best out there. He can pretty much do anything on the guitar. He's a virtuoso in the truest sense. While he's technical master on the guitar, he is also a very textural player. He often shifts moods to match what the piece of music is doing. Abercrombie, quite simply, is one of the greatest jazz guitarist of the last 30 years. His popularity, however, is somewhat baffling to me and at the same time it's really a shame that more people don't know about him. I can honestly say he's influenced my own guitar playing. Abercrombie is a VERY underrated jazz guitarist. "The Third Quartet" is Abercrombie's first album for ECM in 3 years.

"The Third Quartet" picks up where 2004's "Class Trip" left off. However, the music here is more refined and this is simply because this particular quartet has been playing together for 9 years. This music is very hard to describe. I wouldn't classify it as free jazz, because there is structure to the music, but I wouldn't necessarily call this music bebop either. What I would call it is chamber jazz. It's a deicate balance of classical and jazz. The jazz aspect of this music is obviously within the improvisations, but the music follows more in the lines of classical. This type of jazz is something Abercrombie has been working on for many, many years. The instrumentation on this album as with the groups other two albums is quite unique: guitar, violin, bass, and drums. Mark Feldman plays violin and is one of the better violinist I've heard that can improvise in a jazz context. His ideas are always interesting and melodic and they add color to a piece. He definitely is one of the best jazz violinist I've heard. Someone like Regina Carter needs to look at what Feldman is doing and take notes. He's the new jazz violinist that people need to be aware of. Marc Johnson, on bass, has been around for a very long time. He has played with so many musicians, but I think his best early work is with pianist Bill Evans. Marc has also released some very fine albums under the ECM and Polydor labels, most notably the album "Right Brain Patrol" remains one of my personal favorites of Johnson's. Marc always provides great support to his bandmantes. Joey Baron, on drums, is one of the wildest and most original drummers of the last 15 years. He's been an active member in Bill Frisell's band and has been apart of John Zorn's group Naked City and has also played on countless John Zorn albums. Baron's work with Masada, John Zorn's group that blends traditional Jewish music with jazz, has been a very rewarding listening experience. Baron's style is one that is in constant motion. He doesn't stay in one spot to long and yet he provides this group with what it needs: a driving force to propel it.

"Third Quartet" is a good place to start exploring John Abercrombie's later work. It has all of the naunces and textures of an Abcercrombie album but with more of a chamber jazz leaning. Very highly recommended.

Here are three dozen pieces of music, all played by Yo-Yo Ma, culled from his extensive discography. Aside from the technical mastery and beautiful tone that are absolutes in all of his playing, one is dazzled by his curiosity and ability to adapt to so many forms and types of music. His Bach and Vivaldi are pellucid and played with non-sentimental crispness, his tango music gritty and rhythmically pungent, his jazz seemingly spontaneous, the "Meditation" from Thais simply ravishing, "Anything Goes" a romp, and the Appalachian music performed with both respect and a great twang, while the traditional Chinese music is fascinating. It's really a matter of how much Ma loves whatever he plays here, how entirely he becomes involved in it, and what a fine partner he invariably is to other musicians.     "Sacred Ground" is a fascinating and important new recording that grew from David Murray's involvement in the acclaimed documentary film, Banished, directed by Marco Williams. Although it's virtually unknown, more than a dozen counties in the U.S. violently expelled thousands of families between the Civil War and the Great Depression. The film - and this recording - explores not only these historical facts, but also the legacy of these events in the communities and for the descendants of the families.

    After exploring the themes of the film he'd been asked to score, Murray was inspired - indeed compelled - to dig deeper, and to compose further music. David Murray enlisted poet Ishmael Reed, one of today's pre-eminent African- American literary figures. Reed wrote two poems, performed here by the great Cassandra Wilson.

    David chose to record this using his Black Saint Quartet - sometimes called Power Quartet, on the group's first outing since the passing of the great John Hicks last year. Logically then, David enlisted pianist Lafayette Gilchrist, informally a Hicks student and admirer, and on drums the great Andrew Cyrille. Bassist Ray Drummond completes this first class group.

    Keith Jarrett and his European Quartet band including Jan Garbarek on Tenor and soprano, Palle Danielsson on Bass and Jon Christensen on drums.
    This CD is best known as THE Jarrett-Garbarek album due to the beautiful track called "My song", one, among 6 other great compositions; as a matter of fact it is their most rewarding collaboration on records; loose and relaxed album, very pleasant to the ears.
    As a personal opinion, this album ranks as my Jarrett's favorite CD other than "The Koln Concert".
    Highly recommended and very much worth buying.

    I pick up this album because I heard one song in the movie ,the title of which was "Bella martha".
    "Country" was used in that movie and when I heard it ,I thought instantly who made this beautiful song?
    And it's right here ,I finally found.
    It's one of chance meetings for me because I didn't know nothing about Keith Jarrett before.
    I love Jazz but it's always difficult for me to buy the right one that is not so boring to listen to.
    And so I'm sorry that I don't have knowledge to talk about jazz but I'm certainly glad to know these brilliant songs.
    I'm sure that people who love music will like this one!

    This is the most unremittingly optimistic album in Jarrett's vast ECM catalogue. No, you won't find very much of the challenging harmonies you will on any of his "American" quartet records, or even on Belonging. But it is thoroughly melodic, energetic, and flat-out "optimistic."

    If your looking for something "keith" that is both Real Fresh Jazz and yet lyrical and sedate enough for a novice or your father to enjoy this is THE album. It's my all time favorite Jarrett Album. These cuts "pop in" to my head in certain moments... and I have to pull the C.D. and listen to them once again. I don't want/need to try to rehash the great comments and notation already given here, for most are quite insightful. But I just had to weigh in saying this album is so beautiful in it's ability to be both fresh and jazzy yet at the same time being extemely lyrical and clean in a child like jazz manner. So you know, I have lots of his albums and a very comprehensive music collection. I have many great jazz albums and this one still stands out for me as a high ranking classic! For his solo improve work I also am quite fond of the "Kolin Concert" (still)

    This is one of Keith Jarrett's most straightforward pop-jazz albums. The compositions are not as interesting as those on Nude Ants or Belonging which I would recommend rather than this album.

    Few albums sum the musical ideas of an instumentalist as well as Crescent does for John Coltrane. One gets the sense that all the bugs have been worked out and that this is what he wanted to say. The message is lyricism and the blues... and perhaps laughter. The rhythm section is warm and sharp. The music has the searching melencholy that is immediately recognizable as Trane. Singularly beautiful.

    i've been on a real coltrane binge of late, and have been filling in some holes in my collection of his stuff. what a hole i found from 1964! no wonder i have always felt a vague sense of dissatisfaction with life. now i know what was wrong all along. i didn't have this great coltrane masterpiece! well now i do, and i feel 100% on top of life's game. this album is a stunning piece of work, mostly mid-tempo to slow in vibe, coltrane here plays absolutely gorgeous sax, while mccoy tyner's wizardry on piano is inventive and wonderful for the ear to behold, as well. the rhythm section of jimmy garrison (bass) and elvin jones (drums) rumbles along beneath the surface like some swelling wave, carrying things to their conclusion with a haunting sublty and grace. the title track "crescent" is one of my all-time favorite trane tracks now, and the ballad "wise one" is close on its heels. the final cut "the drum thing" is an amazing piece, too. a composition where elvin jones' magic really stands out. no john coltrane collection is complete without this heavenly album. now i know.

    I have almost all of the records of Coltrane on LP,now in Cd.To understand his music and development you must know He has 4 phases, The first pre atlantic, the second on Atlantic. The third is modal on Impulse, and the last near free jazz on the same label until his death.

    Collecting John Coltrane is a challenge; he was prolific, constantly evolving, and seemed to live in a recording studio. Even so, certain landmark efforts have achieved "essential" status, for a variety of reasons. I would agree that A Love Supreme, My Favorite Things, Ascension, African Brass, Giant Steps, and the Johnny Hartman collaboration all fall into this category. Crescent does too, and I'm not certain why it is so frequently overlooked.

    Like A Love Supreme, Crescent is an integrated whole, not a mere collection of "tracks." The entire effort casts a very particular spell. Maybe critics don't embrace it because it doesn't feature the trademark "sheets of sound" for which Coltrane was known, something akin to blowing the cold off of ice. The allure of Crescent is much more subtle than that.

    Each selection, even the straight-ahead Bessie's Blues, aches with haunting, spiritual elegance. The solos, which do occasionally soar, never lose sight of the ground and resolve back into their themes in deeply satisfying ways. Coltrane's tone, always amazing, is especially lush and round here, almost opulent. Even at its wiggliest you're unlikely to turn down the sound, this CD wants to soothe you, not nail you to the wall.

    The opening bars of the title track tell you exactly where you're about to go, straight into the sad and beautiful heart of truth. Wise One takes listeners through the entire emotional cycle, fragile longing, seeking that reaches up, reconciliation. Perfection. McCoy Tyner shines throughout on piano, especially on Lonnie's Lament, a tune lovely enough to put tears in the eyes of a serial killer. Drum Thing finds Elvin Jones conjuring up a sort of hypnotic trance; the interplay between him and Coltrane provides a transcendent conclusion to a CD of exquisite beauty.

    In many ways it's unfortunate that Coltrane's reputation rests on the idea of destroying music in order to reinvent it. Listening to Crescent provides ample evidence that, in addition to being a profoundly spiritual man, Coltrane was as lyrical a player as has ever unpacked a horn.

    Gerry Mulligan's off-the-bandstand relationship with Chet Baker could never be considered amiable, but once the two West Coast bad boys picked up the horns, everything was sweetness and light, though often underscored by a subtle and sweet tension.     5 out of 5 stars A Cornerstone of Modern Jazz.......2006-05-31

    The quartet that baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan formed with trumpeter Chet Baker in Los Angeles in 1952 enjoyed considerable popular success during its single year of existence; but as this complete collection of the band's Pacific Jazz sides proves, flash in this case had a solid grounding in substance. The simple - if decidedly unorthodox - decision not to employ a piano, thereby eliminating his harmonic center, pushed Mulligan to the very forefront of jazz's postwar development, and resulted in some of the most sparkling and tuneful performances in the history of the genre.
    Starting with the leader's very first (pre-Baker) California recordings, GERRY MULLIGAN QUARTET traces the rapid evolution of this gifted group's sound, sensibility and personnel (An early version of the unit included a pianist but no drummer!), allowing listeners to share in the excitement these young men must have felt as they recorded three-minute masterpieces like "Lullaby of the Leaves" and "Soft Shoe" - pivotal works which sound as fresh, and dare I say it as important, today as they ever could have in their own era. Oft-covered warhorses "Makin' Whoopee," "My Old Flame" and "Darn that Dream" get spectacular makeovers here - the last in two different versions from which I defy anyone to pick a favorite. The live sets which made Mulligan's and Baker's reputations are well represented too, with bouncers like "Poinciana" balanced by such moody classics as "My Funny Valentine" and Mulligan's own "Funhouse." It's all here.
    ...Well, almost all. Those duly enchanted by this generous collection should seek out OJC's GERRY MULLIGAN QUARTET/CHUBBY JACKSON BIG BAND disc, REUNION and KONITZ MEETS MULLIGAN for more of these major musicians' efforts; all are well worth it.

    I wasn't very familiar with either Gerry Mulligan or Chet Baker when I bought this CD. Jazz is a relatively new interest for me, and I'm still feeling my way around. The overwhelmingly positive reviews sold me, though, and I decided to pick this one up. I'm *so* glad I did.

    It's always a pleasure to hear such talented instrumentalists working together, but this CD takes it to another level entirely. You can almost feel the energy crackling between Mulligan and Baker when they play off each other's riffs. It's just amazing stuff. Whenever I play these CDs, I end up playing them a second time, and a third, and a fourth.

    Get this set. You will not be disappointed.

    I don't know if I should even attempt to compose a review for this release. I'm not certain I could even approach anything resembling "justice" for it. I'm sure I'll fall far short. But, that aside, here goes.

    This cd, as my title indicates, is absolutely beautiful. To start, I would recommend getting this cd along with "Chet with Russ Freeman" and the Chet Baker/Art Pepper release that was once known as "Playboys" when on Capitol Records that is now called "Picture of Heath" in it's reissued form. These three releases combined make for a great combination/trilogy.

    That said, this cd is fantastic. It captures Chet, and Mulligan, in their infancy, right on the cusp of what was to come. You can still hear the naivete in Chet's playing and while it's not as great as his "Chet" cd (which is absolutely, hands-down, my all-time favorite), it is just as magical. Just in a different way. This is the absolute epitome of the "West Coast Vibe." And, now, for me living here in Miami Beach and having left my home of San Francisco (where I lived for over 25 years), it brings back many, many memories of being very young, slaving away at menial jobs to go spend all my money at record stores to pick up jazz lp's (yes, lp's). All my minimum wage earnings went to Chet, Pepper, Getz, Garland, Mitchell, Adderly, Miles, MJQ, Monk, Webster, Hawkins, Milt, etc, etc, etc. Then, I'd take them home, cherish them, make mix tapes, and then hit the PCH or the city streets in my Ford Falcon with this as my company.

    That's the truth. A bit of a diversion from a "review" of this cd, but it kind of, kind of, catches a vibe about this cd that, if you can at all dig what I'm saying (and hopefully, if you're checking out this release anyway - you're a soul I can relate to and CAN catch my drift), then you can get this vibe. But, if you know anything about this scene, then you know what I mean anyway. This is fluid, soul-touching stuff. If it needs any explanation, chances are there isn't anyone who can really explain it to you, nor anyone who would want to, and this is probably something you'd never get. But, it probably won't need explaining. You get this, you put it in, you close your eyes, you'll know. Top down, sunny day or rain on window pane with your heart full of sadness. Oddly, it fits both 'cause I've tried it. But just do yourself a favor and pick this baby up, along with the others I mentioned. You will be glad you did.

    It does not take many words to tell you that these 2 CD's have the great and unique deep baritone sax along with that smooth horn of Chet Baker to make a winning combo. Buy it. You'll like it. You'll love it. There's some pretty nifty drum work on some tracks as well.

    This set is the best I have ever heard from Gerry Mulligan or Chet Baker. They started as musicians just trying to make names for themselves, and they definitely succeeded. If you are looking for a lot of well-known tunes, I have to warn you, these CD's don't have a whole lot. It makes up with style and great harmonies and melodies. Whether it's Mulligan blowing out his great sound into genius solos or Baker playing a melody with Mulligan on a harmony or countermelody, these CD's don't have any bad songs. The rhythym sections change throughout the album, as do the years they're from, but the purity of the cool jazz stays the same. I would highly recommend this to any fans of Mulligan, Baker, cool jazz, or to any jazz listeners who want to hear a wonderful collaboration between two great musicians.

    This is a reissue of the 1959 studio session. Although Blue Rondo and Take Five are the signature pieces for the Quartet, the other tracks are in keeping with the innovative time signatures 5/4, 6/4 and variations of 4/4 and 3/4 time. What else can you say except it's a classic and belongs in evryone's collection.

    This Cd is just GREAT and such a Jazz classic! The re-mastered version of this Album is absolutely wonderful---sounding so crisp and sharp!

    The songs speak for themselves, as they are some of Brubeck's most famous hits.

    This is a highly recommended re-mastered version of Dave's TIME OUT Album!

    This album changed the rules in jazz in two important ways. First, it introduced atypical time signatures to jazz performers. Performers were pushing ever other musical limit, including harmony (Miles Davis, Bill Evans, . . .), melody (John Coletrane, Eric Dolphy, . . .) and song structure in general (Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, . . .). 4/4 and 3/4 time signatures were already optional in contemporary classical music and some ethic music. Brubeck opened up this fertile opportunity for the jazz world (and later rock like Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull and Rush). Perhaps more remarkable was the fact that this album proved that the public was receptive to this new approach to popular music. Brubeck went pioneering and returned with no lethal arrows in him.

    The best part about this album is that this new technique was not just a novelty; it was a path to creating timeless compositions like Take Five and Blue Turk a la Rondo. My favorite things about Brubeck are his range of expression (from cool and understated to highly muscular), and the unique voice of Paul Desmond's saxophone. Desmond's instrument has the bird-like sweetness of Charlie Parker combined with the lazer-focused tone of John Coletrane. The alternating solo voices really injects life and breath into the group.

    The use of different time signatures did not did not get embraced as widely as one might expect in a genre built on creativity. Some felt that odd time signatures did not "swing" (although Brubeck and others disproved that), some may not have felt comfortable with or inspired by this new approach, and I suspect that the distinctiveness of this contribution by a white man made it "uncool" among many jazz musicians to do something that sounded "like Brubeck". The happy side effect for Brubeck is that this album stands out in jazz like few other works.

    Sony/Columbia did this superb sounding disc very well in this SACD transfer! This rivals the original edition Lp for lovely sound, and I think it is among the best single layer SACD's out there (Mingus ah um is THE best to these ears!). You know (or should know) the music, so don't hesitate getting it on SACD! I should add I am not into 5.1 for music. My sound review refers only to 2 channel stereo sound.
