There's a reason Barbra Streisand's 2006 tour broke the arena house record in every city it visited, and it's because she's not only a legend but (still) a performer who effortlessly twists intimacy and friendliness and fierceness into a perfect, sturdy braid. This two-disc set, which pulls performances from dates in New York, Washington, D.C., and Fort Lauderdale, will raise its share of goosebumps. For longtime fans, they'll be a reaction to songs Streisand hasn't touched since the '70s and earlier, including "(Have I Stayed) Too Long At the Fair?" and "Unusual Way," from the Broadway musical Nine. For relative newbies, they'll be a response to her between-song patter, which touches with grace, wit, and sincerity on everything from her love for her son to her political leanings to her limitations as songwriter. The voice, of course, enthralls--there it is glowing on "Carefully Taught," one of four songs that have never before appeared on a Streisand recording, and there it is again wrapping luxurious tones all around "Evergreen," one of three songs she shares with Il Divo. Streisand--diva, political dynamo, superstar--still knows how to orchestrate a showstopper. --Tammy La Gorce

Not the Best of Barbra.......2007-07-07
Streisand's lastest CD, *Guilty Pleasures* was a feast of songs she had never sung before, and a reunion with Barry Gibb, who writes for Barbra in a more contemporary way than the Bergmans or Marvin Hamlisch. It is a great CD, and her voice is sublime, aided, of course, by sound technicians. All artists owe their sound engineers their careers though. She and Barry have fun on it--it's fresh and alive. Not so much with the 2006 Concert CD, a recording of the concert tour, replete with IL Divo, a mostly unnecessary addition. They are wooden men with BIG, BORING voices.
From the beginning, Babs sounds tired, hoarse and raspy. I saw her in concert, where she sometimes sounded even worse than this recording. The engineers cleaned it up as well as they could, leaving more than a hint of breathiness and weariness. Fortunately, only about half of the songs are weakly rendered; the other half really are terrific experiences. I have no idea what is going on with her voice that from song to song there could be such differences, but if I were Streisand I would leave the belting behind. It wouldn't hurt for her to warm up before she comes onstage, not as she is giving the concert. For any price, a fan would expect the performer to be well prepared. When she sings a soft ballad, she often soars, and her magic is prominent. It's painful to watch her crumble under the memory of her once youthful voice (and it was only a few years ago that she sounded like a 25 year old songstress). Streisand knows how to play a song for all its worth, but she sometimes tramples it to death. *Don't Rain in My Parade* is just not what it used to be. She hits high notes, but without the characteristic force. And she can hold the notes, or seem to, when she takes little breaks before each song's finale. Her phrasing is impeccable when she is giving it all she has to give, but too often she seems bored. This is not a bad CD, just not as inspired as *The Concert.*
It also has to be said that it seems apparent Streisand is not taking care of her God-given voice, one she herself has said that she takes for granted (unimaginable!!).
The chatter inbetween songs is dull and preachy, and it was exactly the same in every city, except for blabbering about the fattening food she ate all across the US (excluded from the CD, thank the Lord). The fans are really the stars on this CD--they roar constantly, as if they had been starving to see Streisand all their lives. It's an odd treat. The orchestra is incredible, but live, it drowns her out at times (as does IL Divo). This recording does not relfect that though.
If you do not own *The Concert* CD, buy it and skip this one. This CD is for avid, adoration-is-blind Streisand fans only and those keeping track of Streisand's vocal history..
Streisand: Live in Concert (2 CD's).......2007-06-27
Whenever I hear Barbra sing it feels as if I were listening to an angel....The depth of her voice, the feeling she caries in every song she sings makes you fall in love, feel despair, feel hapinness or sadness....She is capable of making you feel the letter of her songs....A true Diva....My only regret is that I will never be able to see her live.....I hope they make a DVD of this concert so I can see her perform live at least on the TV set...
Streisand: Live in Concert (2 CD's).......2007-06-26
This concert is very unique.
You are able to hear her great, mellow voice and in between songs, she talk to the audience on a personal level.
Barbara explains why she sings some of her songs, and as she's talking, she makes you feel that she is talking directly to you.
Barbara Streisand is stylish, wonderful person and performer.
I LOVE these concert CD's!

Babs lets loose.......2007-06-13
I LOVE Barbra Streisand! I just needed to let that out. I am so happy that her wacky stage antics were finally set to music and it was captured like a baby leopard in Ghana. You never know what Babs is going throw at you. Is she going to come on stage dressed like a cowgirl riding a donkey? Is she going to shoot hot dogs otu of one of those hot dog shooting things? You never know and that is that magic of Babs. Her voice is about as good as Beyonce's, but she has better material. I'll usually grab the newest issue of Black Tail magazine, go to my treehouse and put this classic platter on. It is soothing to listen to Babs rock the mic like a fiend. I personally would have hired Burns to play keyboards on this tour because along with being a master of his craft, he's tall and will do nutty things on stage. There was this one time at an asschowder show where he wrote "right" and "left" on his pantlegs and did this bit where he pretended he couldn't tell which one was which before lauching into a floor exercise routine that would have won the silver at the Helsinki Olympics.
Anway, this is Babs being Babs, which is a treat for you. She and Hasselhoff should tour together and make the world a better place for all animals.
Streisand: Live In Concert.......2007-06-13
We attended her concert when she played the Staple Center in L.A. and knew we would be first in line to get the C.D.. The recording is fabulous and with the selection of new songs and her narrations of each song, she places them historically in her long career. What can I say, she is still a sensational vocalist and well intended political activist. However, the political comments are edited out of the C.D.

Longtime listeners have seen it coming: it was only a matter of time before John Mayer dropped the pop star pretense and proved he could really bring it. Chalk it up to one too many Dave Matthews comparisons, or the cupcake-sweet residue stuck to his image after the success of "Your Body Is a Wonderland"--but something convinced Mayer it was time to take him game to the next level. With help from studio pros Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino, he succeeds on Try. If the muscled-up covers of Jimi Hendrix's "Wait Until Tomorrow" and Ray Charles' "I Got a Woman" don't scream "no more Mr. Nice Guy" loud enough, the brawn of blues-rock opener "Who Do You Think I Was" does for sure. Mixed in with the Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton-esque stuff are a few mellow numbers--"Daughters," most notably, returns from Heavier Things alongside "Something's Missing"--but even those songs seem hopped up on rock-God hormones. This newfound sizzle can't fix everything; that segment of the music-buying public that would accuse the singer of having a voice like "a whispering midget" (to quote a customer review of Mayer's work) won't want to add this disc to their collection. The good news for Mayer, though, is that anybody with an ear for genuine rock'n'roll chops will. --Tammy La Gorce
Customer Reviews:
Better than expected.......2007-05-30
John Mayer does have a lot of live albums for a guy who just put out his Jr. cd this past fall. But, hey...if you have the chops, and the raw muscial talent than people will listen, even if it's the same tracks. Mostly because he's the king of creative variation. This CD is better than I expected, and more edgy than some of his past albums.
There are old favorites here, but again- he never sings the same song twice, and has a lot of fun with his music! His music is so dam good people buy cd's with the same tracks just to hear them a different way!
Live Album.......2007-05-26
This isn't the first John Mayer cd Ive bought but I think it's the best. Hearing him live is a whole new experience.
Eh.......2007-05-13
Bought this CD primarily for one song and after a month or so it's the one that I primarily listen to :) ( I got a woman)
Maybe I should have gotten it for 99c from I-tunes
Not a bad album, but not GREAT imho.
Loved it!.......2007-05-13
Wow! But I am also a John Mayer fan. I really enjoyed this CD -- great combination of his own modern style and classic rock/blues. I liked every song on the CD.
Great guitar.......2007-05-07
For those of you who, like me, first heard John Mayer as another nasally, self-indulgent pop singer, this album is a revelation: excellent blues-rock guitar throughout and passionate renditions of Mayer songs. There's a delightful cover of Hendrix's "Wait Until Tomorrow" and an equally refreshing cover of a Ray Charles song. This album made me a believer in Mayer, even though I'm a long way from his generation.

The Best Procol Harum Album Ever.......2007-01-26
It took me a long time to find this album on CD, previously only had the vinyl and took it all over the world with me. The CD is engineered very well, a clean recording. The only thing that could have been better is if this album had been released on DVD-Audio or SACD in a true 5.1 mix. This album was originally produced in quad-4 so a remix to 5.1 would be easy and fantastic.
best mix.......2007-01-10
Procul harum live bridges classic rock with classical music. In this album you'll hear a gutiar played as an instrument of the ochestra. Absoulutely a brilliant piece of music.
It's been a long time .......2006-11-28
I haven't heard this album, with the exception of the first track, in about 30 years. My roommate in college owned this album and I was always a PH fan so hearing them with an orchestra was fasinating. I never really saw the CD anywhere until I came across it here and said I must have it. It still sounds great. The songs and arrangements are truly classic in every sense.
Truly A Glimpse Of Nirvana.......2006-10-30
Procol Harum's work throughout the years has been uneven, but this collaboration with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra is one of their shining moments. I have worn out more than one vinyl version of this recording over the years, and I also have the MFSL version of this CD. While it is true that the MFSL disc suffers in comparison to this one, keep in mind the state of technology in 1971. We do owe a debt to Wally Heider's mobile studio for the tapes that allowed Repertoire to do such a splendid job of remastering. This recording belongs in everyone's collection, whether they are a fan of Procol Harum or not. If you are not moved in some manner by the time you hear "Grand Finale", then you had better check your pulse.
An awesome remastering!.......2005-12-21
I too had the MFSL CD and thought that it sounded OK.... although I knew from experience there was a lot of information missing, I assumed, due to poor master tapes, etc. I worked on a project with MFSL back in the eighties and knew how capable they were of doing some great things.
I received the remasterd disc from Repertoire and about fell out of my chair the first time I listened. It is indeed amazing what modern technology can do to restore some of these "treasures". This CD is one that every musician should, by law, be required to have - it really is that good. BUY IT - It will become one of your favorites! A soaring masterpiece for all music lovers! ... Rob P.

Customer Reviews:
Must Be the Greatest!.......2007-07-01
Unreal heavy guitar blues workout with organ songs too. Whew! Man, these guys let it go!
What can said? Joe works the wah-wah like mad and I just can't get enuf of the humbuckin' Les Paul crunk... wish we had more of this, man!!!
SUPER disc.......2007-05-12
WOW! That's the first word that popped into my head after this 40-minute Live in Concert album came to an end . I always knew the James Gang was a hard rock band a bit heavier than the rest, but I had *no* idea they were actually THIS heavy!
I'm serious when I say this album might out-rock Zeppelin and Deep Purple's heaviest moments during their prime. I have a hard time understanding HOW this album could go by all these years unnoticed by the majority of people who like to rock out to the classic 70's stuff. This is just an extremely heavy album. There's nothing else I can say!
When you first hear this album, the first song is called "Stop". Your first impression might be that the album is old, muddy and dated. However, it only sounds like that because the music is so heavy, technology was having trouble back then capturing these musicians at their absolute heaviest and putting it on record.
This live version of "Walk Away" is quite different from the one radio stations play. If you're used to that version only (like me) you're going to be in for a pleasant surprise. This version starts off with a heavy musical bit before the vocals come in. It's pretty clear the James Gang wanted this version to be all about power and intensity, which explains why the guitars and drums are so loud and in your face. If I have one complaint, it's that the guitar section from the studio version that ends the song isn't here. Instead, the song just comes to a sudden end. It's really not much of a complaint, because you'll be so excited and shocked at just how heavy the song is, you probably won't even notice.
"Lost Woman" is 18 total minutes of straight blistering guitar work and extremely heavy drumming and bass. In fact, there's moments on this album where Jim Fox drums with *just* as much extreme speed as Keith Moon. Very few people can drum like that. This song separates the men from the boys.
"Take a Look Around" is probably the only moment on the entire album where all the heavy guitars, keyboards and drums take a back seat to a pretty vocal melody. That means, out of 40 minutes of music, only 4 minutes is devoted to a somewhat quiet tune. The rest of the album is some of the heaviest music I've ever heard, and definitely one of the heaviest live albums I've heard from a 70's rock artist.
I said to my dad that he probably won't be able to handle it. Of course he disagrees, but I think I'm right in this case! Joe Walsh and the James Gang live and tearin' it up!
3.5 Stars: Pretty Good.......2007-03-05
I just bought this album and have listened to most of it. What I've heard I've liked. "Stop" is really good; "Walk Away" is even better. The rest of it is a bit trippy. I thought Walsh was more of a comic-rock kind of guy (As in his "Ordinary Average Guy" single). Better song writing than I'd expect. Cherck out the 71 version of "Walk Away." Amazing.
The sound, however is not the greatest. It seems that they have the mics in the balconies rather than near the band. This might be the only detration from a pretty good record. I'm looking foreward to "You Can't Argue With a Sick Mind" from Walsh.
The Best of Joe Walsh .......2007-02-15
This is Joe at his finest and the James Gang is his best rhythm section. He knows it too, thats why he reformed the group in 2006 and is touring with the JG again! Go Joe. The 2 organ tracks Take a Look Around and Tend My Garden and done very well live and Joe rips on the Hammond organ as well as the guitar. Stop! and Walk Away blow away the studio versions also. Get this record if you are a Joe Walsh fan.
James Gang - 'Live In Concert' (MCA).......2007-02-14
Good 1971 live recording of the James Gang at their very best. Tracks that certainly had me sit up and take full notice were "Stop", their Albert King's cover "You're Gonna Need Me", their sole hit "Walk Away" and the awesome seventeen minute Yardbirds cover "Lost Woman". It's been so long since I've heard a James Gang lp or CD. Unforgetable great early '70's album rock to be fully taken in. Line-up: Joe Walsh-guitar, keyboards&vocals, Dale Peters-bass&vocals and Jim Fox-drums,organ&vocals. If you dug some of the era's better known bands like Bad Company, Mountain, Faces and Grand Funk, you should like this archive release a lot. A definite should-have.

As good as it gets.......2007-03-08
A superb taking of a superb artist in a superb mood. Need a say moore?
If you only plans to own five CDs this must be one of them. Mr Bellafonte at his absolute best. I enjoy every second of this CD. Not only is it musically outstanding but it is also a true high fidelity record.
A CD not only for easy listening but also for true listening sessions!
Some technical details and comments.......2006-07-25
Tracks flow into each other with no "silence" between; its just like the "Living Stereo" black vinyl Long-Play records. All of the content on the LPs is indeed here. Awesome.
Sound quality is quite good. CDs were issued in Germany in 1993 (performance dates were 19 & 20 April 1959). There are no markings on the CDs indicating remixing, remastering or other processing. Despite this, the sound is a little more "natural" than my LP transfer which had that circa-1959 bass richness. This may be just coloration in my turntable set-up and the CD gets it right. There is minor tape hiss in the background noise. The dynamic range may have been increased. The CD allows me to hear more in the music than I ever heard before (musican banter, HB's breathing etc).
The CDs are a great replacement to the LPs transfers I had on my iPod. (I'm not sure yet if I'll miss the ticks and pops from the needle. It was kinda cool on an iPod.)
Regarding musicality; the other reviews have said it all. I agree that this is one of those rare recordings where everything is perfect. It is unthinkable that this concert could even have one second edited from it. I love this concert. It is genius.
The complete concert, greatest live album ever made.......2006-02-07
Harry Belafonte, is on of the greatest, most influential man ever born in the United States, as well as a hero to the world as well as to all Americans. Mr. Belafonte, World WarII veteren, who volunteered and was on the battlefield, and still serves his nation and the World, with his international travel on behalf of Unicef.
As far as his totally unique talent, this magnificant talent, shows all of his power, his heart, soul and love for all humanity with the best live album ever created.
I have a sentimental feeling about the famous Carnegie Hall concert since I grew up in blue collar family in Brooklyn attended this show. Growing up, I used th hear my parents play this many times on weekends, while doing their chores and nothingw ould light up their faces, create laughter, got them to sing, more than when they listened to the album of this Carnegie Hall concert.
I was about eleven or so when I started hearing it, and I have the album about memorized and grew up loving the album, Mr. Belafonte, his talent, his incredibly diverse careers, and non-stop dedication to all of humanity.
There is comments by an individual who does live the CD about how Harry did "novelty songs" in the second act. THOSE ARE NOT NOVELTY SONGS, THEY ARE FOLK SONGS FROM DIFFERENT CULTURES AROUND THE WORLD. But I guess to an American, International folk music is a "novelty song". Grrr. I know the gentlemen who made that comment meant no harm, but I hope it is understood. Mr Belafonte is currently and has previously spent his life unfolding the cultures of nations from all over the world by singing and giving publicity to the great folk music that tells the story of the people of the world.
It is great that this import has the entire concert, but I have to admit that I am ashamed as an American, that it has to be AN IMPORT, that no American music company has taken the original tapes, re-mastered it with love as they would any major piece of history and re-released it. He was born in Harlem and is one of the great, great stories of someone who has lived the American dream. Please remember the racism he experienced as well as being blacklisted suring the McCarthy hearings. But nothing stops his optomism and love of humanity.
He talent is unequaled and no one delivers a folk song with more power, heart and soul.
Besides, he probably was the best guest the Muppets ever had.
A couple of quick pieces of info on Mr. Belafonte. Bob Dylan was recorded for the first time on a Harry Belafonte album, where Harry hired him as a harmonica player.
Mr. Belafonte is a graduate of the Actors Studio in N.Y. the produced a generation of great actors.
Calypso was the first album to sell 1 million copies, but how many people know that he followed that album up with a album where he read and discussed the works of the great American writer, Mark Twain.
Thank you Harry for this great album and the great memories you leave me listening to it and the great pleasure you gave to my late parents.
Jon
I'm Just Wild About Harry (Belafonte)!.......2006-02-04
Nowadays the "powers that be" (read: "murderous thugs within the Bush Administration")are on a campaign to depict Harry Belafonte as being mentally unstable. Why? Because he had the courage to point out the all-too-obvious fact that George W. Bush and the dirty old dingbats around him are the biggest sources of world instability since Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin.
It's nice to know that he's still Harry after all these years; Still holding up a mirror to a sick and hypocritical society that obviously doesn't like what's reflected.
Belafonte At Carnegie Hall, recorded on two nights in April of 1959 is, no doubt about it, the finest "Live" album ever recorded. All these years later it still has a freshness that is irresistable. The fact that it was recorded with state-of-the-art equipment, you can close your eyes and it's almost as if your sitting, front row. It's moving and riotously funny all at the same time. Trust me on this one kiddies, you won't be disappointed!
Pray for peace

True talent, live.......2005-10-28
I grew up with this album that my parents had, unfortunately I recalled it as Belafonte RETURNS to Carnegie Hall. Thankfully I ordered this first, then later got Harry Returns (basically for Odetta and Miriam Makeba).
The man is brilliant in concert and it is unbelieveable they were daring enough to try to record these performances live. I shudder to think anyone currently who could pull this off (with the exception of Midler who thrives on a live audience).
Does Belafonte have an incredible voice and fantastic range? Not really. He has a great voice but the man has PASSION and intelligence in his hip pocket and he presents a priceless show.
It's amazing to me, now, to realize what a global attitude this man has, did I mention passion and intelligence? So I did, but it's well worth repeating.
I played this album for a 7th grade class and they ape over it -- they knew two songs from the movie Beetle Juice and insisted I download the lyrics. When it came time for Cucurrucucu Paloma they went wild (and the staff freaked when they heard it was a live performance) so I knew Mama Look a Boo Boo would be appreciated.
I know Mr. Belafonte is known and loved for many of his standards (basicaly Day-O) but I my faorite piece will always be Merci Bon Dieu. It's so beautiful, it's heartbreaking in a wonderful way.
I hate live albums because most artists cannot do live what they create in the studio. Not so with this -- he sounds even better live. A truly talented man with intelligence and passion -- darn, that's rare and very much appreciated, especially in the year 2005.

With just a pair of CDs--Tigerlily and Ophelia--in her solo-career arsenal, Natalie Merchant isn't an artist you'd expect to release a live album. Perhaps Merchant is fond of playing live, which shows throughout these 11 tracks despite her relaxed, unflappable vocal delivery. The former 10,000 Maniacs frontwoman leads an amped "Wonder" and then coos into "San Andreas Fault"; the latter is expansive and dramatic, a direction Merchant is exploring that's alternately off-putting and charming. Merchant's version of David Bowie's "Space Oddity" is even more philosophical and meditative. Add to that a languid take on Neil Young's "After the Gold Rush" and you have a full-scale portrait of Merchant's mindset. The ever-somber music is limited in its emotional scope, but there are few performers in mainstream pop who excel more in that range. --Andrew Bartlett

Bit One Dimensional.......2007-01-03
Having travelled in reverse through Natalie's catalogue, I rate this as mediocre, somewhat lacking in vibe. I suspect the set list of her many performances would throw up a more varied bunch than what we have here. This leads to the question, why was this performance chosen as the one to commemorate to disc? Bowie's, 'Space Oddity' is given memorable treatmen, and Neil Young's,'After the Gold Rush' is adequate. Other reviewers have noted the absence of 'Ophelia' songs, and that's a regret I share. I can't detect a single cover that even equals its studio effort.Favourites, 'Gun Shy' and,'san Andreas Fault'. The overall evening seems somewhat dour, too slow-paced for mine, though Natalie seems in fine voice.
Beautiful music, wonderful showcase for her voice.......2006-11-11
I bought this disc as a fan of Natalie Merchant, thinking it would be a nice addition to my collection. I was surprised - this recording is a collection by itself. Merchant's voice is as warm as caramel, and as sweet too. The music is at its best here. This has become a particular favorite of mine.
Specially delightful are Seven Years and Dust Bowl. The album singles Wonder and Carnival differ from the original release by being better. The live atmosphere creates a more personal experiece.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
A great American singer/songwriter.......2006-10-05
I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Merchant and the other members of her then-band, the Ten Thousand Maniacs, in the late 80s, as a fan hanging around after the show. This was just before the band really broke into the national/international spotlight with their 3rd album (CDs were relatively new back then). She always seemed very sincere and intent about her music, but also humble about her own abilities. It is so inspiring to find musicians who maintain their focus on their music, and do not try to exploit their celebrity status only for the sake of more and more money. I heard the cover Space Oddity on the radio today, and was captivated by the song, not even realizing at first that it was Natalie Merchant. Her songs 'speak' for themselves - no introduction or analysis needed.
On the long dry or raininy road this is the music to hear.......2006-07-07
I came across Nathalie Merchant unexpectedly. When I saw the movie One Fine Day I was captivated by the song she sings (one fine day), I looked everywhere until I foud the soundtrack and knew her name, then, in my usual used cd store here in Caracas I saw this wordeful edition (cardbox) of this live album.
Nathalie has a style that I can consider as atmospheric and best described by the relaxing hallucinations she takes me when Im on the road (rain or shine) on my long trips as a travelling salesman.. Indeed a reviewer commented that her style is dull, I can understand this appreciation but only if we considered Brian Eno to be dull because of his style... let her captivate you, she is so natural, unimposing.. Im 42 YO so for me its not easy to just let any new-kid-in-town just to make an univited introduction into my music world, but Im so glad I did to this wonderful album
Natalie Merchant's Voice Is As Beautiful Live As In Studio..........2006-05-21
I bought two studio albums of Natalie's in the past (Motherland and Ophelia) and absolutely love them. I was curious though how she sounded live so I came across Live In Concert and thought why not? It would also get me more known in some of her songs before Ophelia.
I must say I love her live. Unlike so many dime- a- dozen pop stars these days- Natalie can sing just as strongly and beautifully live as in studio. While many pop stars just sound terrible live, Natalie still takes great control in her songs even onstage. It just makes me want to see her so badly in concert sometime.
Aside from Natalie's powerful vocals, this album holds a good amount of songs, most I never heard of before. I just wish she might have thrown in two more songs or so of Ophelia. Yet the songs she does have on here are quite enjoyable.
It's hard to choose favorites when it comes to Natalie Merchant, for each song holds it's own unique and addictive sound, but San Andreas Fault, Beloved Wife and Seven Years are some of the most beautiful songs on here- Dust Bowl and Gold Rush are done very well- and I just love Gun Shy. The Gulf of Araby though is just amazing to me- it's just so subtle and yet gorgeous.
So I do recommend this c.d. strongly if you have a c.d. or two by Natalie already and really enjoy hearing her. She is great live. I still love her in studio too, I think she does well in both places.

Essential Kate Wolf.......2005-07-25
2 disc live performance that is the essential of this wonderful folk-soul singer...the in-concert acoustics are terrific and add to the powerful intimacy of the performance.
Gold on every track.......2004-02-05
This is the first Kate Wolf collection I owned--as a tape back before normal people had CDs-and Kate live, Kate live is something to remember, not that her other albums aren't obviously recorded live in the studio, not on separate channels. How do you get so good as this. Why isnt she a household word. Thank goodness there are so many recordings. It is really worth it hear, even if you have other recordings of these tunes because she speaks so personally every time she did a song.
I've known who knows where the Time goes since Judy Collins did it around 1969, and enjoy Sandy Denny's version, but I have listened to Kate's version here for hours and it got me to perform the song!
The vision of California that Kate weaves on all her records is preciseless, unique real, and a treasure even if much of it is sweeten myth.
I feel so bad that I lived in San Fransisco and Oakland and travelled up and down California and the West Coast in the late 1970s and early 1980s when Kate was doing her best work and only saw her sing once. When I hear something like Sweet love on this CD, I wonder why I am not always listening to Kate. There is something to her voice that gets through to me, something pure. Now that I sing and play guitar and banjo and fiddle, I tend to listen to any singer or player that I hear trying to scope them out learn something, evaluate, figure out how to put what they do into my performance. Even though Kate plays the kind of music I have always wanted to play, I just sit there and listen to the song and receive its thoughts in my heart and mind. Part of Kate's magic is the superb arrangements and backup that gets from the musical genius Nina Gerber her main accompaniest. Nina is now out there solo alot. If you like guitar and this kind music check out Nina too.
Oh Kate, why didn't we realize how much of a golden treasure you were when you were among us. In her memory think of a performer you might miss like we all miss Kate--well that isnt fair because thats a big ideal to measure up to--how about someone you would miss half or a quarter as much as I miss Kate, and make sure you go see them while you can, and maybe bring a friend, bring two.
A Very Moving Album.......2002-05-26
If you don't know Kate Wolf's music, or you don't own any of her CDs, this is a great place to start. She sings with incredible authenticity and poignancy. Her original material is wonderfully well-written, and she makes excellent choices from the work of other songwriters. This is an unusually well-recorded and produced live album. I especially like her version of "Who Knows Where the Time Goes," which hits me much harder than the well-known Judy Collins version. This one never strays too far from my CD player.
Give Yourself To Love.......2000-12-10
I bought this album without knowing anything about it. When I first listened to it, I was amazed at the incredible beauty of her voice, her guitar skills and the lyrics of her songs. Medicine Wheel is my favorite on the album, but all of the pieces on this recording are beautiful. Growing up during the Viet Nam War, Agent Orange is stunning. I heartily recommend this album and have already ordered a second!
Kate Wolf: Sorely missed, long remembered........2000-11-28
I came here today to buy a CD for a lovely young lady who may, one day, marry my son. I had written her a letter and at the end of the letter, I quoted the chorus of the title song of Kate Wolf's Album: "Give Yourself To Love". It was a bit of beauty and wisdom I wished for her and my son to share.
Twelve years earlier, my wife and I renewed our vows in a ceremony at which my son and daughter played a role... among the songs in the music at the ceremony was: "Give Yourself To Love"... along with John Denver's "Annie's Song". Kate's song, which she wrote, is of the same quality... of the same feeling... and with the same heart as "Annie's Song". Her song, like his, is ageless and a wonder of beauty.
What prompted me to write this review is simply that no one had done it before me. I could scarcely believe it and could not let it pass.
Kate, in her life... that was too short... entranced countless of her fans in Austin, Texas. And, since I'm from Austin, that is my connection with her. But, it's clear from her music that she had a following in California too... and no doubt elsewhere.
Had her life not been cut so short by cancer, I'm certain that countless others would have come to know and love her and her music. But it was not to be. As her life grew short, all her friends in Austin, where (I believe) she spent her last days, "gathered 'round" her with such love that it would bring a tear to the eye of any but the hardest hearts. All were inspired with her courage and spirit... so full of life... and love.
The absence of a review of this album here was an empty space that had to be filled. So, as I said, I could not let it pass... could not let her pass... without taking a moment here to say something of the magic she brought to this world in her person and her music. Much of her magic is here in her album.

Great, but is this the whole concert?.......2007-07-08
This is one of my favorite albums, but I can't help wondering whether this is really the entire concert. He plays solo, as well as with Urubamba and Jessie Dixon and his group, which makes it harder for me to believe that the whole concert was only about an hour. I would love to have a re-released, remastered version of this concert in its entirety.
Live Rhymin' A quiet side of Simon.......2006-05-29
A quietly introspective live album featuring some of Simon's early solo hits, interspersed with Simon and Garfunkel songs, usually reworked with one of the guest side groups. The versions of "Me and Julio"and "American Tune" are very powerful, with Simon's voice and acoustic guitar highlighting the pop quality of the first song, and the moody world-weary lyrics of the poignant second one. Sometimes it is successful, particularly when the Incan group Urubamba joins him for "El Condor Pasa", "Duncan", and "Boxer". His songs with the Jessy Dixon group are not as consistent. "Mother and Child Reunion" and "Loves Me Like A Rock" are enhanced by the gospel-tinged accompaniment, but I find them distracting presences in "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" and "Sounds of Silence". Ultimately, Live Rhymin'
is a thoughtful presentation of some of Paul Simon's most well-known and powerful songs.
Inspiration.......2005-09-04
I have always found this album an inspiration and a true delight, which moves me every time (after hundreds and hundreds of times) I hear it. The additional words to The Boxer, and the instrumental finale, are things that have literally pulled me through some dreadful nights in my life ("after changes upon changes we are more or less the same"). Thank you Paul. I literally love this album. Amyone who has not heard it, please please spend an evening with it. You will not be sorry.
Very good, an intimate night at every listen.......2005-06-15
The great thing about this album is it is just an intimate paul simon concert. It is not a huge deal like the central park disc was and it wasn't a greatly promoted show with posters hanging everywhere, it was just paul simon and an acoustic guitar jammin in front of a great crowd. Recorded with great microphones to give a good live cd. You will love hearing simon with urabamba and you actually feel like you are in the crowd. I was not pleased with the jessy dixon singers, however. God knows simon could not do a garfunkel like bridge over troubled water, but the singers try to highlight themselves too much on this album when they are less phenonomal than they seem. However,i did not see the need for them to sing on other simon songs like mother and child reunion and sounds of silence. Those songs were in simons vocal range and there was no need for them there. One definite weakness was on the album is the song jesusn is the answer. It is a paul simon show and there is no need for the song. Aside from these minor flaws this is an all-star album, which provides an intimate set list not of 30/40 songs as on some other live albums but 12 simple tracks that just makes for an ordinary paul simon show, shows that he would usually play, not huge venues. Great buy, check it out!
The title says it all!.......2005-03-30
Paul Simon was promoting THERE GOES RHYMIN' SIMON while recording this album. Originally released on Columbia Records in 1974,it was re-released on Simon's current label,Warner Bros. in 1987. I like the sequels,THE CONCERT IN CENTRAL PARK,with Art Garfunkel and PAUL SIMON'S CONCERT IN THE PARK(by himself) better than this one. The best version of THE BOXER,originally from 1969's BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER,I heard is from TCICP,recorded in 1981. Because there's a previously unsung verse in the song. The other tracks are good.

It's not a bad quality CD but the music is variable and different. Even though I like most types of music, I think the composition is just average.
A world rhapsody.......2006-12-28
This is suberbly enhanced performance CD that captures Yo-Yo Ma and friends at their musical heights. The accompanying musicians, the Assasds, Paquito you-know-who, Kathyrn Stott and others add beautiful textures to the compositions of Piazzolla and Jobim to create a Latin influenced classical painting. This is music to play, go about your business at home and enjoy the different influences coming together. The sadness and happiness blend to reveal the emotions of life. Favorite songs include D'Rivera's "Afro" that sneaks up on you like breaking dawn to reveal the sunshine and life anew. Also Piazzolla's "Tango Suite" is a frenzied Yo-Yo Ma performance with suttle breaks on cello giving way to the Assadd's beautiful quite work on guitars to spike and peak your interest numerous times. This is good background music but it grabs your attention and makes you listen carefully so it can turn on you and be very demanding. Good for those quite times of work or reading.
All that a performance can be........2006-02-11
Keep in mind that The studio version of this performance is nothing short of brilliant. The material includes pieces from the likes of Astor Piazzolla, Jobim and Paquito D'Rivera. Then you come to discover that there is a live concert version (and Dvd) of the disc. There is nothing like having your cake and your ice cream in the same bowl. Well that is what the release of this disc is, Cake and Ice cream with the cherry on the top.
Peace:
The*Hot*Wax*Kid
Good music, engineering could be better.......2005-05-05
I bought the disk after hearing about the colaboration on NPR. The songs and performances are impecable, the variety is satisfying and fun. My only complaint is that the quality of the recording leaves something to be desired. Several times the recording level is not balanced between the instruments so that when listening to YoYo Ma playing, when joined by the saxaphone, it comes in too loud and ruins the mood.
I almost always prefer the live perfomances when the energy of the audience carries over to the performers. This is one case when I wish I had gotten the studio version.
a classical-Latin music blend.......2005-04-22
Yo Yo Ma and his fellow musicians make beautiful music in this mellow adaptation of melodies that have their origin in Latin America.
The opening track is a version of "Libertango", heard in the fabulous soundtrack of the film "The Tango Lesson", and one of the three compositions by Astor Piazzolla, in this concert that was recorded live at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall in 2003. The group of assorted and marvelous musicians toured the world with this music, and there is a cohesion between the performers and the material they are playing that is evident, and a pleasure to hear. One hears the applause, but it is not obtrusive, and the sound is excellent for a live recording.
Very impressive is the clarinet of 6 time Grammy Award winner and composer Paquito D'Rivera, who wrote 3 of the tracks, and shows his virtuosity and Cuban soul in 7 pieces, and I especially like his "Merengue".
Rosa Passos sings and plays guitar on 4 tracks, and has a soft, clear, and pleasing voice, and 3 of the songs she interprets so well are by her fellow countryman and Brazilian bossa nova artist Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Other musicians are Sergio and Odair Assad on guitars, Kathryn Scott on piano, Nilson Matta on bass, and Cyro Baptista on percussion. Yo Yo Ma is of course the household name among them, and is masterful in his interpretations throughout; I especially like him in D'Rivera's "Afro", a fascinating piece with some experimental sounds.
Other favorites for me are D'Rivera's "Wapango", and "Cristal" (Camargo Mariano), a rhythmic duet between Ma and Scott that is terrific.
This CD has the feel of a classical chamber concert, with the warmth of melodious Latin compositions, and is a nice and unique musical treat.
The foldout insert has liner notes by D'Rivera, recording info, and mini bios of Ma's 7 fellow musicians; total playing time is 72'07.
This package contains a bonus DVD, that includes 3 videos:
1. Piazzolla's "Libertango", from the original soundtrack of Sally Potter's film "The Tango Lesson", with clips of the great tango dancer Pablo Veron.

3. Jobim's "Chega de Saudage" interpreted by Rosa Passos, from the "Obrigado Brazil" CD.
