I never got to see Beau Jocque live and I'm sad because I found his music a few weeks ago.
I really like Jocque's style of zydeco and plan to buy more from him even though it would be tough to beat this good sounding live recording. It has a free form flow to it that I love and a tad over one hour of happy jamming music.

If you like non traditional zydeco, you'll love this recording too.

5 out of 5 stars Did ya git it?!?!.......2006-02-13

I picked up this CD in 96 after listening to a few seconds of just a few songs. It got me rockin instantly. A few months later on a trip to NOLA I just happened to pick up a paper to see where to go and there was Beau Jocque playing at the Rock and Bowl(I think thats what it was called). They rocked that place so hard the floor was buckling! This CD is the next best thing to seeing him live(if you were lucky enough). Any guy who can make a rocker out of raffle ticket numbers and licence plate numbers is number 1 in my book.

5 out of 5 stars So good it sizzles........2005-10-20

"Git It, Beau Jocque" is almost indescribably good music. It isn't that polite, lightweight zydeco you see in some movies and hear on some CDs. This is gut bustin high energy zydeco with an electric bass line that never quits - powerful and compelling all at once. Bass and accordion driven music of such intensity and life you wonder how they could POSSIBLY survive a whole set. I have several other B.J. CDs that are very good, probably 4-stars, but "Git It..." is something special. This is an incredible document of an amazing music performance - a treasure.

Beau Jocque and the Hi-Rollers were my favorite Zydecko band.
I have every CD they made, I think. This is one of the best.

5 out of 5 stars Make plenty of room to boogie with this one!!!.......2001-11-09

This is the first zydeco CD I ever purchased after seeing Beau Jocque and his band perform on Jay Leno. I was not disappointed in the least. It's high energy, his band is one of the most tightly woven groups I've ever heard, particularly his bass player, who plays some of the stankest, fonkiest bass ever. This CD will make you dance like an idiot, non-stop. It even got me through the graveyard shift doing data entry at a bank. Just put it on repeat and get ready to boogie. Even if you don't dance, you'll tap your feet, snap your fingers, bob your head, find something to shake or scratch. I must admit I rode around with a tambourine in my car, shakin' it like a fool while sitting in traffic. Go get this one. You'll love it.

    5 out of 5 stars MOB FASHION!.......2006-04-26

There is an unwritten rule in the rap music. If you are a successful solo artist, you always gotta bring a crew of young rappers up with you. In most cases, it turns out to be a big flop, since the young crew of rappers is usually weak, and not quite on the same level as the big name who brought them up. Well, that's NOT the case with C-Bo's Mob Figaz. Ever since I heard them on C-Bo's classic album "Till My Casket Drops" (1998), I knew there's something special about these cats. An year later, C-Bo released the group's self-titled debut album. I was VERY surprised by how tight this album came out. 15 songs, no skits, no itros, just tight a## bangin' tracks. The album is gangsta rap to the fullest, hardcore in it's purest form. No laid-back, RnB type tracks. Just pure Bay Area gangsta sh##. C-Bo is on about half of the songs, and he really brings heat to the table, rapping with agression and emotion, just like he rapped on "Till My Casket Drops" and "Enemy of the State". But the album is NOT about Bo. It's about the Mob Figaz - Rydah, AP9, Jacka, Hussalah and FedX. They are not outshined by their mentor, and each one of them comes out with some remarkable verses. As you probably know, many of the group's members became some of Bay Area's best solo artists as well, most notably Rydah J. Klyde (who signed with Mac Dre's Thizz Records), The Jacks and AP9, with the other two developing their careers as well. This album introduce as to the Mob Figaz, and we all get to hear some awesome verses by the crew. Another thing that really impressed me was the production. It's some of the best beats you'll get to hear. C-Bo's connections surely helped, and the album gets music by some of the Bay hottest producers, including Lev Berlak, One Drop Scott, JT The Bigga Figga and a few others. The beats fit the rapping perfectly, and they show you Bay Area rap at it's best! If you like C-Bo's style, you'll love this album for sure, I guarantee. Support the real ones out there - Mob Figaz are from the streets and that's what they rap about - surviving, hustlin'. That's kind of rare today. A definite 5 stars album, no tracks will be skipped on this one. Guest rappers include C-Bo, Spice 1, Yukmouth, Young Kyoz, BA and a few others.

5 out of 5 stars Too tight for words.......2002-11-15

If you would rather listen to your fake bubblegum rap that has no substance or meaning to it, listen to whoever it is you listen to and pass this title up. If you like listening to real hardcore music that pulls no punches and will draw you in from the first song and keep playing until the end, please pick this up. Like Xzibit said, the game is 10% skill and 90% hollywood. Let me tell you these young cats the Mobfigaz are 100% skill and no hollywood. I can't believe how tight this Cd is, I got it about 6 months after it came out and it is still in my cars rotation. I don't hear this being played too much by anyone where I live, but I play it all the time. C-Bo and the MobFigaz represent for real. No filler tracks, no boring skits, just music to ride to the whole way through...the tightest tracks on here are....well all of them! But if I had to narrow it down to the tightest ones I would say Hustlin in the Rain, Mo Money, Tailor Made, Soldiers Paradise, Secret of the 5 and Mob Fashion. Those are the ones you will hear coming out of my stereo a lot. Much love C-BO and Mobfigaz for keeping it real and putting out the real music out. They say the West Coast ain't been the same without Pac, whatever. Bo is one of the best kept secrets on the West, this and all his other albums prove it. Pick up the Mobfigaz new one, Camp Mobfigaz cause it is just as tight as this one

"In 1998 at the Roxy on Sunset, Trulio Disgracias gave one of the best shows in memory-it started with a marching band entering in costume from Sunset, and ended with a walk-on jam led new star-style by ... George Clinton ... good lord, people, Trulio is what we need, not Brand X and Boy Band Z." - HOLLYWOOD FIVE 0

Nuttin's Gonna Git'choo If U Don't Look Out is a massive sack of good-natured, danceable Nuttness designed to upgrade your listening experience in every aurally pleasurable manner imaginable. With Sun Ra, P. Funk, Grateful Dead, and Fela Kuti as inspirations, these musicians represent the outcome of funkin' for many years.

Produced by the Nuttness Monster (Fishbone bassist and co-founder Norwood Fisher), these recordings sport an amazing amalgamation of musicians-members of legendary musical trailblazers including H.R. of Bad Brains/Soul Brains; Spacey T and John Bigham of Fishbone; Mark Cross and Audra Nishita of Weapon of Choice; Danny Moynahan and I Timothy of The Untouchables; Bronx Style Bob and Donald D of The Rhyme Syndicate; Asdru; Ulysses, and Crunchy of Ozomatli; Overton Loyd of P. Funk ... the list goes on forever and a few years.

A legendary phenomenutt in it's own right, Nuttin's Gonna Git'choo introduces a mainly live occurrence to a brand new world. More than a super group, deeper than a jam band, this is the sound of dedication to something called Nuttin'. After twenty years of doin' it for Nuttin', this is only the beginning of something musically mystical and intrinsically earthy-from the guts, go on ahead and get a Nutt!

Another good album by the Bear Family in this series. As with all of the cd's the liner notes are a good history of the people and the music and help make the price more bearable. Like the song selection, but like discs 10, 16, 17 and 2 better.

          3 out of 5 stars Rockabilly?.......2005-07-11

Well, I can tell you that this compilation has nothing to do with rockabilly. But it's intresting anyway. It is more garage rock and roll from the sixties, featuring artists like Billy Barry ("They Call Me Willie The Wild One" and "My Love Is True" are absolutely my favourites from this cd), Billy Balls (who played around with Cheetah Chrome, ex. The Dead Boys and got shot to death), Charlie Starr, ex. Black Sabbath singer Ronnie Dio (here with two songs "Do the Oop-Poo-Pah -Doo" and "Love Pains") and Otis Blackwell's song that was covered by Elvis Presley "One Broken Heart For Sale".

3 out of 5 stars Great Collection, but weak link in series.......2000-08-28

I have over half of this great rockabilly series. Each volume feaures a different record company, and some of the rockabilly that they released back in the genre's day. There are some darn fine songs that haven't seen a mass audience since the 50's, some not at all. Volume four cover a record label called Festival, which operated in New York in the 60's. The high point of the Rockabilly scene was in the late 50's to early 60's, the earliest track on this collection is 1961, as the scene was winding down. The tracks on this disc do rock, but they show obvious influence from Rock that came after Rockabilly, some an almost California 60's rock. A nice point of interest on this disc: The original demo for One Broken Heart for Sale by Otis Blackwell is present. This song would eventually be performed by Elvis in it happened at the Worlds Fair. (Blackwell also wrote Don't Be Cruel). Also there are two numbers by a man named Ronnie Dio. The same Dio who would eventually go on to front Black Sabbath after Ozzie Osbourne left. My biggest let down with this disc though was how light it is. The majority of this series all feature around 30 tracks each. The Festival volume only has 16. If you are someone who is just getting into Rockabilly or just beginning to research the history of the music try another volume (like vol. 1-3 which are all very strong.). This is not really the place to start, but if you are a completist or looking for some Rockabilly outside the norm, try this disc.

There are many rare cuts on this album like the cut from Red Foley, Pat Boones father inlaw. But the best one is from Jerry Engler Mr Sputnik man himself. This is the first CD with his song on it and it's like having an original master to enjoy and make copies of. The variety of artists make for an interesting session.

          5 out of 5 stars Hot Rockabilly!.......2005-07-11

This compilation is one of the hottest from this series. It represents Decca'a hottest rockabilly. The rockiest performer here it is of course Johnny Carroll, whose Hot Rock, Wild Wild Women, Crazy Crazy Lovin', Corrine Corrina and Trying To Get To You are already rockabilly classics. Sweet Love On My Mind is another rockabilly classic mostly known by Johnny Burnette And His Rock 'n' Roll Trio here performed by Jimmy And Johnny.
Eddie Fontaine is known by his hit Nothin' Shakin' (covered by The Beatles). Here you can hear a hot rocker Cool It Baby. Ten Little Women of Terry Noland is a song that The Blue Cats before they were named The Blue Cats covered. Roy Hall is another legendary rockabilly or maybe more boogie woogie piano player, here featured with five numbers (Diggin' The Boogie, Off-Beat Boogie, Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On, Bill Haley's See You Later Alligator and Three Alley Cats). Don Woody is another treasure and is known only to really die hard rockabilly fans.
          You gotta have this

          5 out of 5 stars killer stuff.......2003-11-25

You can't really go wrong with any of the collections in this series. But Vol. 2 stands out. It's just killer track after killer track. Perhaps we can thank Grady Martin for it. He was the bandleader and lead guitarist on most of these sessions, which were recorded for Decca during the brief period when all the record labels were trying to cash in on the rockabilly craze.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for any fan of Rockabilly............2002-04-16

Drop this platter in the disc player and you're sure to wear out your boppin shoes. This CD features one of Rockabilly's wildest ever, Johnny Carroll. What can I say about Johnny? Frantic, nervous, surely kept the girls on the edge of their seats (if not tearin his threads off). The CD also contains a whole slew of other Decca gems re-issued in all their original glory. The lyrics are typical rockabilly fare. In other words if you are looking for meaningful social commentary, you're in the wrong bloody place. Don Woody? "Barking up the Wrong Tree" and "Bird Dog" are a couple of the best boppers around! ARF ARF!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Rare original rockabilly sides.......2002-03-06

Given the meteoric rise and short original lifespan of Rockabilly, one might be tempted to consider it a passing fancy. But given the deep roots it shared in both hillbilly and rhythm 'n' blues, and the lasting impact it would have on rock 'n' roll, the explosion of sound in the mid-to-late-50s is seen to be a whole more than an industry-fueled fad. Bear Family's seemingly endless "That's Flat... Git It" series chronicles the scads of lesser known artists and rare sides that were the ice berg of music holding up the tip that appeared on the charts via Elvis, Carl Perkins and others.

Volume 2 focuses on sides waxed for Decca in the U.S. The label's country A&R chief, Paul Cohen, ran both country roster artists and new finds through a single or two, cutting them loose if they didn't hit (and losing Buddy Holly in the process!). Most of the sessions were arranged and produced by legendary studio guitarist Grady Martin (whose acoustic lead was famously featured on Marty Robbins' "El Paso"), and recorded in Owen Bradley's studio, with Bradley often playing piano.

Bear Family selected thirty tracks (all in glorious mono) previously anthologized on a four-volume UK anthology, and added Bill Millar's exquisitely detailed notes and discographical information. The highlights are numerous, including Don Woody's hiccuping (and barking) "You're Barking Up the Wrong Tree" (how could the Cramps not have covered this?!), and Autry Inman's jivey "Be Bop Baby" (not to be confused with Ricky Nelson's like-named song). Jimmy & Johnny's "Sweet Love On My Mind" paved the way for latter-day revivalists like Dave & Deke, and The Five Chavis Brothers "Baby, Don't Leave Me" seem to presage the Kingsmen and other 1960s Northwest powerhouses.

Throughout, the guitars ring with the authority and bravado that moved Rockabilly past its roots. The comfort with which both fingerpicking and electric flatpicking fit the genre is an indication of its two musical roots. Though not the wildest side on this set, country legend Webb Pierce's "Teenage Boogie" shows how short a leap it was from hard-driving country-boogie to rockabilly. Roy Hall's tracks are reminiscent of Bill Haley & The Comets, including a looser R&B-influenced cover of "See You Later Alligator," and an early version of "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" that takes it down-low, rather than barn-burning.

Child prodigy guitarist Jerry Kennedy, who'd go on to a successful career as a record industry executive, shows himself to be a fine rockabilly vocalist on "Teenage Love is Misery," and Roy Orbison's original rhythm guitarist, Peanuts Wilson, cut the truly peculiar "Cast Iron Arm," penned by Orbison and producer Norman Petty.

Those looking for an introduction to rockabilly might want to start with the hits (that is, not this series of compilations), but anyone looking to explore the breadth and depth of the sound will find this a terrific anthology.

          4 out of 5 stars Decca version.......2002-03-02

Each release of the That'll Flat Git Series focuses on a particular label. This release it's Decca, who had some pretty good talent. Johnny Carroll and Roy Hall have the strongest cuts, but Don Woody tested my patience each time a song of his came up (they're filled with painfully bad puns). Many of these songs have a Sun Records flavor to them, especially the Carroll tracks. I think my favorite is the Five Chavis Brothers "Baby Don't Leave Me." Most of the songs have a strong-country feel to them.

In case you don't know, the Bear Family goes all out with liner notes and audio quality. This isn't close to being one of my favorites of the series, but I still like it. Grade: B.
