Great music.......2006-10-02
I love to listen to music when I cook. This CD had the whole family dancing in the kitchen. Great stuff.
A pretty good dancy/lounge music type album - a little cheesy sometimes, but you'll probably like it a lot - 4.5 stars.......2006-01-10
Gabin's "Mr. Freedom" is a breath of fresh air from most of the stuff I listen to these days, but that's not enough to warrant it a "5". I would argue that it's a little cheesy and repetitive in spots (see the female singer in "Into My Soul" for the first part, and "Bang Bang To The Rock N Roll" for the second). Overall, however, it's a very good lounge music album that I think genre fans will like a lot. I don't have any other album that sounds like it, so I don't know the best way to describe it - I suppose it's bluesy/jazzy early 1900's-ish sounding lounge music (sorry if that was confusing hehe). There are no bad songs here, but I think most would agree that the first 3 are the best songs on the album. The only problem with the album is its slight repetitiveness and it's slightly cheesy and guilty nature, but otherwise I think genre fans will really like it. Overall I would highly recommend this!
Highlights include:
"Into My Soul"
"Bang Bang To The Rock N Roll"
"It's Gonna Be"
the rest are good, too, but these are the standouts I'd argue
PASS THE MARTINIS!!!.......2006-01-04
Italian duo Gabin has done a masterful job of concocting 10 tracks fused with bossa nova, electro-jazz, soul, blues and electronica. Not quite as dance-floor oriented as their debut that brought us "Doowap, Doowap, Doowap", "Mr. Freedom" still has stellar moments that will have you shaking a tail-feather, like the infectious 60s influenced, "Into My Soul", sung marvellously by Dee Dee Bridgewater, and the uplifting "Just Be Yourself" to only name a few. This CD is perfect for your next soiree of bougie wanna-bes--just make sure they bring the vodka!
Rock on, Edwyn! .......2005-12-26
For "Mr. Freedom" alone -- five stars !
Pick Me Up in the Morning.......2005-11-23
Compared to his first album with 'doo uap', this album takes a completely different approach from its former Buddha Bar Hotel Costes style. To be honest, I am absolutely in love with this album, sadly, China Moses, although has talent, doesn't just quite cut it with jazzy house feel of the music, but overall...I tell you what..this is a feel good album through and through....definitely worth buying!

This trio of percussionist Kahil El'Zabar, trombonist Joseph Bowie, and saxophonist Ernest Dawkins has been plying the jazz trade since the 1970s, always bending rules and working without the traditional harmonic rooting of a piano or rhythmic footing of a bass. In all their years, they've rarely approached the plateaus of Freedom Jazz Dance, named after the Eddie Harris tune that opens this set. Guesting as a fourth member is guitarist Fareed Haque, who supplies a weave of sound between Dawkins's alto and tenor, which frequently hop across stylistic fields from Ornette Coleman's quick-burn phrases to Sonny Rollins's agile, breathy fullness, and Bowie's guttural, blooming 'bone. As always with EHE, the percussion is more than top shelf, always playing polyrhythms with studied fierceness--but also with an emphasis on pacing. These tunes move gingerly, never rushing their growth and always emphasizing a groove-based, postbop sound that aims at the big target of all-jazz and meets the mark with ease. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
Freedom Jazz Dance.......2001-01-17
Kahli El Zabar's Ethnic Heritage Ensemble is almost always good, but this is perhaps their finest studio album of the decade. I could only reccomend their live releases (or better yet, performances) more highly. Guest Fareed Haque shines on guitar, and the band moves smoothly from funky (on Mama's House and Eddie Harris's Freedom Jazz Dance) to peaceful and mystical (on Katon). Well worth owning.

Awesome but reject the shamanism.......2003-10-16
I love Peter Kater and most of his music without occult or shaman titles in them, because the truth is, it is part of a cult thinking and spiritual darkness. I studied it for years as I did other cults and I know people firsthand who were involved with the illuminated cult and "ism. Otherwise he has an excellent talent and beautiful spirit in music and melodic creation on the piano and you cannot deny that he has a God-given gift, if and when he ever acknowledges that is truly where it comes from.
from Solo Piano Publications.......2002-07-15
"Inner Works" is a collection of pieces that Peter Kater originally created for television, dance, theater, the 1999 World Ski Championships, and the 2000 Summer Olympics. Several of the thirteen tracks are sparkling new arrangements of pieces that were released on previous albums, while others are on this CD for the first time. Kater's classical roots come to the forefront effortlessly, and his pianism is extraordinary. A favorite of mine for several years, Kater is one of the best pianists out there, and this CD showcases his playing and composing gifts at their best. Other featured musicians include Paul McCandless on oboe and peny whistle (hey - those aren't strings!), David Darling on cello, Cecil Hooker on violin, and Randy Chavez on guitar. Several pieces are fully orchestrated, with RJ Miller conducting.
"Inner Works" opens and closes with big, Olympic-sized pieces, "Overture" and "Birds of Prey", respectively, but most of the other pieces are quieter and more introspective. "Eclipse" is a beautiful waltz for piano and violin duet. "Forbidden Dreams" is a haunting piece with a sense of searching and longing - heartbreak set to music. "Candlelight Waltz" is a somewhat more upbeat version of "Dreamtime Waltz" from "Pagan Saints" by Flesh and Bone (Kater and Chris White), this time a lovely piano solo. "Elusive Nights" is a powerful piece for piano and orchestra - dark and a little mysterious, it really tugs at the heartstrings and would be great in an emotional movie scene. "River" is a wonderful new arrangement of a piece that appeared on "Birds of Prey" (1999). Fully orchestrated this time, the piano still haunts with that catchy rhythm and simple but compelling melody. I haven't been able to get this one out of my head!
This is a really great album, pure and simple! Peter Kater has been creating outstanding albums for twenty years, and with this, his thirtieth album, he continues to only get better. This is extraordinary contemporary music with a classical flair, and I love it! Very highly recommended!

Album Details
The "Freedom Jazz Dance" Concept Started with Luciano Cantone's Suggestion to Create "New Standards", which Could Be Understood Openly from New Generations as Well as Offering a Portrait of the Modern Contemporary European Jazz Scene. Thus, the Natural Purpose of the "Freedom Jazz Dance" Compilations Became "The Giving of a Collection of Contemporary Classics". The Strength of the Release is the Undeniable Influence Brought by Certain European Countries Over Today's Jazz. As Demonstrated by the Artists Here, this Selection Moves from the Northern Longitude of Finland Down to the Southern Tip Represented by Italy (With Two "Digressions" Into the Past by Sahib Shiab and the Kenny Clarke-frency Boland Sextet) Geographically Set in Middle Europe. Five Pieces Are Previously Unreleased and Mario Biondi (The Former Was-a-bee Singer) Appears for the First Time on this Disc with his Band the High Five Quintet.

Customer Reviews:
Good Schema Comp.......2005-03-22
This was a early-mid 2004 release from Idizioni-Ishtar's "Schema" label. It was a true sampler for the label as it had a tracks and titles from within the label and outside in a great showcase of modern jazz sounds with a rearword twist. More than anything, this CD to me was like a stamp on what Schema had been doing for the past year on up to today. The vibe and sound that they were lookin' for.
And I liked this - once again Luciano Cantone and Nicola Conte have put together a great and fair playlist of songs. It starts out with Big Bang's "Speak Low", a cut that changes pace midway through the cuts. But what I think I like most about the track is that for some reason it reminds me of earlier Break & Bossa's with the quick changing cuts and broken beats. Was-A-Bee's "This is What You Are" is also a cut in the new Schema mold. If you are a fan of the Hotel Costes series you'll recognize that a similar rendition was done by Stephane P. and Clementine on volume 6 - a version I admittedly prefer since the vocals on this one seem a bit cheesy. Also on this CD you got to preview the new Conte direction with "Nefertiti", a track with whisping vocals and a quick and subtle bass-line. But another good tune on here is Cabaret Noir's "Ordinary Night" - so gentle! Not to be outshined were Paolo Fedreghini's popular 2003 track "Please Don't Leave" and Schema Sextet's quick and cool "Lothar"; oddly reminding me of football???
There were other good songs on this CD that I enjoyed like Gerardo Frisina's "Gica's Dance" and Doctor Abstract (Gianluca Petrella) with "Struck on Jazz". I think this was more of a testament to some of the jazz albums and artists of old that were inspiration for the 90's nu-jazz/ acid-jazz sounds. Sadly, this along with Post Modern Bossa were the big Schema comps of 2004 since they skipped Break & Bossa at the time establishing the evolving sounds. But... it did admittedly make sense. And with great remix works on Rosalia De Souza's 2004 project and Conte's 2004 release there was more great Schema sound. If you dig this, check out those releases along with Soulstance's "Life Size", Gerardo Frisina's "Hi-Note". And there is another Break & Bossa that was just released in the USA today as an import that shows the funk sound that's been pretty big in the lounge/nu-jazz scene of late with artists like Quantic, Cai, and new The Dining Rooms material given a cool face lift.

Loved it! Hot Latin dance & percussion - great listening.......2004-06-19
I like this most of all their CDs. The standout (bonus) track is Foto Viva (Nicola Conte Mix), but the mix and feel are consistently strong - Brazilian/Latin music with tremendous techno percussion. Very uplifting and positively energetic. It's not only music to work by (hard to stop getting up and grooving to it) it's great dance music. Unlike their first album (which I like but categorise as male-band with Latin percussion override)this has a mix of female and male voice dubs, with the same sizzling hot percussion.

The Import version also features different artwork. Sophomore album from Italian DJ Filippo Clary, and jazz bass player Max Bottini. Gabin slots perfectly into the enormously popular scene that can be described as Jazzy, Downbeat Grooves. Atmospheric retro flavours and funky rhythms paying tribute to the very best house music are just some of the ingredients that make the Gabin album a gem. The first single, 'Mr. Freedom' features the vocals of Edwyn Collings. EMI. 2004.

Good music... if you can play it........2005-07-02
The title track in particular is awesome. But, due to some form of so-called "COPY CONTROL SYSTEM" that EMI has placed on the disc, this CD won't play in my home stereo or my car.
My computer, on the other hand, has NO trouble with it. So I guess I should rip it and make a copy to play on stereo and in the car?!!? Makes absolutely no sense to me. I'd give this five stars without the copy control.
Good music. If you can play it.
too average.......2005-03-19
After I listend to his amazing singles like 'maison', 'Doo Uap...', I totally became a big fan of him. his job WAS great and unique.
so I bought this album with no hesitate.
but I found all the music in this is too average...just normally mixed with some jazz singers.
