If you think you've heard Handel's "Ombra mai fu" (known as his "Largo") so often, and in so many different arrangements, and sung by so many different voices, that you can no longer be moved or surprised by it, think again. This CD of Handel arias, mostly from his Theodora or the cantata La Lucrezia, ends with "Ombra mai fu," and as sung by Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, it is so tender, so beautiful, so impeccably shaded, that you'll think you're hearing it for the first time. But that's only four of this disc's 67 minutes---a follow-up to Hunt Lieberson's extraordinarily successful CD of Bach cantatas. There's not a dull or disinterested moment to be heard anywhere. As the violated Lucrezia, Hunt Lieberson alternately rages against the man who raped her and turns her grief inward; the former is terrifying in its intensity, the latter makes us almost feel as if we're eavesdropping. The five arias for Irene, Theodora's friend, confidante, and the upholder of Christian beliefs are all magical prayers or statements of faith, and from Hunt Lieberson, they become real, with each word honestly conveyed and colored. The voice itself is unfailingly beautiful---warm, lush, never forced, agile when necessary---and her breath control is stunning. She is backed ideally by Harry Bicket and The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and the string soloists in the ensemble---the viola da gamba player, lutenist, etc.---are as gifted as she is. If you want proof that Handel was a great dramatist with a special gift for communicating emotion, all while listening to sublime sounds, this CD is a must. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars A Legendary Singer........2007-03-07

I simply don't have the heart to review Mrs. Lieberson's works.
If we call Ms. Bartoli a 'great' singer, then the description of 'legendary' more aptly depicts Mrs. Lieberson.
If ever a truly good artist lived, Mrs. Lieberson is one such.
The only singer that could be recalled singing in such style is Teresa Berganza; but still, they are different.
This is one of my favourite interpretators of Haendel. Having been 'treated' by those coloraturas of arias of Haendel's period by Ms. Bartoli and others, I find the singing of Lorraine Hunt Lieberson a great relief - at last, this is what Haendel would want it to be. And I equally enjoy the singing of soprano arias by Mrs. Lieberson - the timbre is warmer, but still with all the shimmer - so different from the dark mushy tones of other celebrated 'lyrical soprano' around.
Don't want to say more. Mrs. Lieberson's leaving last year is too heavy a news for me.

5 out of 5 stars Lorraine Hunt Lieberson's Bach: The mind of God revealed!!.......2007-01-06

These deeply felt performances of two of Bach's most moving cantatas show this transcendent singer's combination of emotional honesty and profound musicality, all combined to reveal the very mind of God through divine redemption from suffering. The disc is to be treasured even more in light of the Ms. Lieberson's recent untimely death from cancer. I'm an agnostic, but this music makes me envious of those who can believe. 5 out of 5 stars Glorious singing to treasure for decades.......2006-07-11

By any measure, America's Lorraine Hunt Lieberson is at least the equal of Italy's premier diva, mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli, although she does not have the same superstar status. It is difficult to recall past mezzos with clearer enunciation of English text, (as favoured in nine excerpts from Theodora), the richness of voice, displayed in full-throated fortissimo and sharply contrasted pianissimo of utmost delicacy, evokes fondest memories of the tragically doomed Kathleen Ferrier. Masterfully chosen to display every facet of Hunt Lieberson's consumate command of Handel's dauntingly difficult music, the disc's repertoire - recitatives and linkig arias from the operas Theodora and Serse, and the cantana La Lucrezia - is stunning. An unsung mezzo who makes the senses tingle!

5 out of 5 stars Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson (1954-2006), supreme Handelian.......2006-07-06

I have never heard a voice purer of tone, more flexible in phrasing, and so gorgeously produced in a homogeneous column of sound such as this artist in Handel's repertoire. It is very tastefully sung (unlike a certain person whose name begins with R and ends with enaaay Fleming) and so dramatically touching that one could not help but feel that this repertoire finally has found its instrument. And how sad it is to know that this instrument has passed away two days ago. Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson died two days ago in her home in Santa Fe, New Mexico of breast cancer. It is such a huge loss to the opera world, as she is an artist who is still experiencing the prime of her career. The voice is just so beautiful, the tone so pure, that I lament that we can no longer hear any great roles from this artist. She will be missed.

5 out of 5 stars The Stellar Hunt Lieberson.......2006-03-19

Simply put, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson is one of the very best classical singers alive. She combines vocal elegance and purity with an emotional delivery that raises her above the crowd of technically proficient singers who just don't possess her depth of musical understanding or emotional commitment. Hunt Lieberson is a true artist who resists easy classfication except to say she is perfect in what she does.

CLASSIC U.S. METAL IS BACK! "Redivivus" is a must-have album for fans of shredding solos, powerful vocals, and masterfully heavy songwriting! "Redivivus" marks the debut of WINTERS BANE's new lineup, with vocalist Alexander Koch (SCENES, POWERGOD) and drummer Mark Cross (FIREWIND, ex-METALIUM, HELLOWEEN) joining founding member, guitarist Lou St. Paul. "Redivivus" was engineered and produced by Curran Murphy (ex-NEVERMORE, ANNIHILATOR) and Chris Tsangarides (JUDAS PRIEST, THIN LIZZY), with mastering by RD Liapakis (MYSTIC PROPHECY).

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Welcome the new Bane.......2007-04-23

The name Winters Bane definitely became most known because of their original singer Tim Owens joining Judas Priest and Iced Earth respectively. The album they released with Owens still ranks high on my metalheads' favourites lists, being a strong balance of American power metal and face-ripping speed metal with nods to Owens' influences. After the debut, they released Girth, a thrashier album, and while good by its own merits, the band's fans yearned for a return to their earlier material.

Redivivus sees the band revisiting their more traditional metal roots, but there is still a good amount of instrumental dexterity present on these songs boasting excellent melodic and thrasy guitar work by original member Lou St. Paul. The rhythm section also sees the addition of former Metalium drummer Mark Cross who puts in a great performance. They've also recruited former Powergod vocalist Alexander Koch (now sadly replaced by another vocalist) who also fronts the progressive metal band Scenes. Having heard his albums with both bands, I am surprised at his diversity and ability to snap into a more Warrel Dane-like beast, and portraying a wide range of moods. It is amazing how effortlessly he is able to shift between styles: from the high-pitched power metal screaming of "Catching the Sun", imbued with a blazing lead solo and killer backing harmony; to the thrashy "Spark to Flame" and mercilessly heavy "Dead Faith", he proves how versatile he truly is. On the former he sings like a demented Warrel Dane circa Sanctuary, but the arrangement and guitar riffery is more akin to modern day Nevermore. "Remember to Forget" is an angry rocker, with crushing guitar and bass, and Koch even recalls the great Tim Owens during the high register vocal parts. Winters Bane also presents classic speed metal numbers like "Seal the Light" and "Burning Bridges", both marked by shred-intensive fretwork and thematically alike arrangements. Jeff Welch on bass is a monster on his instrument, thickening St. Paul's ferocious rhythm crunch through and through. The drumming on this piece is easily the highlight and kudos to St. Paul for having developed a unique melodic signature that sets him apart from most other shredders.

It will be interesting to observe them with their new singer on their next album. Let's hope it will be another winner.

5 out of 5 stars amazing new Bane album!!!.......2007-01-26

This is the best album Winters Bane has released yet, the new singer is amazing, like Axl, Ripper, and DIO rolled into one powerhouse metal singer. Im looking forward to more releases from the lineup. Keep the metal flowing guys great job!

5 out of 5 stars Wintersbane are back.......2006-04-15

I was a wintersbane fan from the days of heart of a killer which was a stunningly good album back in the early 90s, then the worst thing happened to a band I liked, the singer Tim Ripper Owens left for Judas Priest, wintersbane were dead or so I thought as things got very quiet about them, then in 2006 I see a review about Wintersbane and their new album Redivivus, is this the same band I wondered and after some investigation I found out it was. I got my copy and what do I think of the new reformed WB, stunning thats what this album is, a true return to form for what has to be one of the USAs premier heavy/power metal acts, they have a style of their own even if you do hear a bit of Nevermore/Iced Earth in their music they are not copycats and do what they do best rock out like hell, Lou st paul (Guitars) does a steller job on his axe and the recrutement Alexander Koch on vocals and Mark Cross on drums have just made the whole package stunning. A must buy album if you like your metal heavy with hints of melody...Madgarry

5 out of 5 stars Cutting Edge Metal!.......2006-04-13

Winters Bane have really delivered a killer modern metal album with Redivivus! If your a fan of Nevermore like I am than you should like this one very much.

Like Nevermore, Winter's Bane play a very heavy yet still melodic brand of metal/thrash with a few prog touches. Very busy and original riffs combined with technical leads and soaring clean vocals. The guitar playing by founding member Lou St. Paul is killer! Very creative and inspired similar to Jeff Loomis's style.

Speaking of vocals, the singer Alex Koch, is truely awesome! Very similar to Warrell Dane as well but maybe a bit more straightforward in his delivery. For those who don't know, Ripper Owens was originally the singer in this band before being recruited to take over in Priest. That said, I actually prefer Alex's vocals and they really fit the music here.

Another strength of the band is their songcraft. Very well written song's that while catchy are never too obvious and open up more after repeated listens. Most songs are at the mid to fast pace tempo. The drumming is very solid and tight. In addition to the mature compositions the top-notch production job allows you to hear every detail of the music very clearly.

Now don't get the wrong idea, Winters Bane is in no way a copy cat Nevermore band and other influences can be found throughout Redivivus. They really craft there own sound a create some modern cutting edge metal. Here is hoping we hear more from this great band in the future. Definately will be in my top 10 for 2006!

2 out of 5 stars Not exactly a string quartet.......2006-01-09

Calling this a "string quartet" tribute is a bit misleading, on two counts: firstly, (and granted, this is a nitpick) the traditional string quartet comprises two violins, a viola, and a cello (no bass or other add-ons); the second shortcoming is much more serious.

Other than the solo violins, most of the music has been produced electronically--that's right, the "quartet" is made up of a couple of violinists accompanied by a computer! Anyone who buys this recording expecting to hear the Canadian power trio re-invented by classical musicians is getting ripped off. Is it any wonder that the front cover describes the "artists" as a generic "string quartet," rather than telling you exactly to whom you're listening?

The arrangements are actually not bad at all; it's a shame that whoever put them together didn't feel the need to hire real musicians.

4 out of 5 stars Quirky, but quality work........2005-09-12

This CD was well produced and has a fine range and depth of sound. The music itself very well mirrors the focus of the project, the best band of all time (in my opinion, of course) RUSH. Some people, like my wife (who is also a RUSH fan), find the string quartet treatment of any rock band somewhat disturbing. I find it an enjoyable change. All things considered, it is obvious that a lot of hard work went into every aspect of the CD, this isn't some "fly by night" company. I'm sure the musicians were tired keeping up with the fast paced rythms of YYZ and other high tempo songs. The recording is crisp. The sound is clear. The music is arranged true to the original songs. There's really nothing more I could want as a RUSH fan who also likes symphonic music from time to time. This disc certainly isn't for everyone, but if you're curious and on the fence, I suggest you'll probably like it.

3 out of 5 stars The thought is nice... but falls a little short........2005-03-09

This is certainly an honor to the band and their great music. But, it lacks something. A few of the cuts come off ok -- but others just rub me wrong. I think it could have worked better had it been arranged differently. (I have always thought Rush tunes would sound great played by a full orchestra -- it seems to me a full percussion section is required).

5 out of 5 stars A very pleasant surprise.......2005-03-04

I am, and have been, a huge RUSH fan for many years now and I was utterly amazed by this CD. It is outstanding.

Now, I will be the first person to admit that I'm not the world's biggest fan of violin or cello music.. Let alone tribute albums... But, this was like nothing I had ever heard before. The complexities of RUSH's arrangements and melodies lend itself perfectly to the classical sounds of the string quartet. The performance is both dynamic and moving. The music flows so seamlessly and beautifully giving a unique new way to appreciate the already expansive music of RUSH. I give it my highest recommendations.

To the magnificent performers on this album I say "Bravo" and offer a standing ovation. I can only hope that you will see fit to release a second tribute album.

2 out of 5 stars Stop The Madness!.......2004-12-10

No, no, no, no!

String Quartet People: please go back to what you do best and leave rock-n-roll alone.

Guitar Hero Shredders: please leave Bach, Beethoven and the other masters alone!

Enough said!

3 out of 5 stars ***VERY GOOD***.......2007-06-06

do not be put off by my 3 stars. I really like this album and i think it is definately worth owning if you are into black/death metal
The only reason i didnt give it 3 or 4 stars is because i cant help but compare it to bands such as borknagar who have so much more musical scope. However this album does what it sets out to do..it has an atmosphere, it is heavy, it has subtle melody. I like the vocals,. There is a couple of short acoustic passages etc... adding to the album. It is quite limited however and could do with a bit of a wider spectrum of inspiration. i like this album and is worth owning.

3 out of 5 stars Grossly Overhyped.......2007-01-02

1995 saw the beginning of the end for the Norwegian black metal movement, which, after reaching its creative peak in 1993/94 headed into a period of decline as Burzum and Mayhem had their careers disrupted by the death of Euronymous and Varg Vikernes' attendant legal difficulties, and the temporary silence of DarkThrone, Emperor and Enslaved. Immortal soldiered on with the excellent Battles in the North: but coming on the heels of the all time classic Pure Holocaust, it was something of a letdown, and was certainly not enough to maintain the scene's forward momentum by itself.

It was into this void that Dissection was trying to step, bringing with them impressive technical skills, an encyclopedic knowledge of several generations of metal history and riffing, and the will, or at least the desire, to reinvigorate the flagging fortunes of black metal by expanding on the genre's latent melodic potential while reintroducing the technical discipline of death metal. Some of it even works.

Storm of the Light's Bane is all over the map stylistically - a careful listener will detect influences from Iron Maiden, to Kreator, to Morbid Angel to early Immortal. In some ways, this is a strength, the variation (mostly) keeps the band from falling into any sort of songwriting formula (a problem that plagues many technically astute artists). At the same time, it prevents Dissection from developing a consistent aesthetic or any conceptual unity. The album's best track "Night's Blood," reinvigorates what is basically ripping death metal in the style of early Morbid Angel or first album Deicide with a darkly melodic turn worthy of classic Immortal or Enslaved. Unfortunately, this experiment is a one off, and the rest of the album consists of more straightforward melodic black metal tunes.

The best of these songs (which are very good, but by no means great) - "Unhallowed," "Retribution - Storm of the Light's Bane" and "Soulreaper" - make black metal of old school heavy metal by breaking openly harmonized riffs in the vein of Iron Maiden into longer phrases using black metal rhythmic technique. While they lack the inventiveness, classical phrasing and epic dynamic sense of Sacramentum or the expert pacing and clever use of texture found in the better works of late-model Immortal, these tracks are both successful and satisfying, at least on a superficial level. A couple of tracks, most notably the seemingly interminable "Thorns of Crimson Death," take an unfortunate detour into some of the worst defects of heavy metal and are dragged down by insipid, bouncy rock rhythms and sing-along kiddie metal choruses.

While Dissection display a mastery of a vast array of metal technique, Storm of the Light's Bane lacks any unifying concept beyond a surface aesthetic of stylized `complexity', as if the band never had any ambition beyond taking a basic black metal template and making it more technically aware. As a result, it has not stood the test of time as well as stylistically similar but more compositionally and conceptually expansive works like Sacramentum's Far Away From the Sun and Immortal's At the Heart of Winter have. Many will continue to praise this release out of nostalgia or ignorance, but it is perhaps better seen as a gateway to better music than as an essential pillar of the extreme metal pantheon.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Metal Album.......2006-12-29

Along with "The Somberlain", this record is simply one of the best extreme metal releases *ever* released. If you have never had a chance to hear Dissection, it can not recommend this record enough.

4 out of 5 stars Great Melodic Death Metal.......2006-12-02

I picked this up because of the cover and the description from a metal music web site. I was not disappointed. The music is melodic yet chaotic, loud, obnoxious, speedy, all the good things one would expect from the genre including the "Cookie Monster" vocals. The bonus disc has a remixed version of the original release with an extra song thrown in, plus after the regular album plays, there are multiple bonus tracks. This is a great collection and introduction to their sound. The only problem is that their creative force just offed himself. He was released a while back after spending time in jail on a murder conviction. Made a sort of comeback, but abruptly stopped the band and killed himself. I can't help not thinking of all that crap as I listen to this. If that doesn't bother you, I recommend this as a great introduction to melodic death. Recommended.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Black Metal with complex guitarwork?!.......2007-07-05

First off, thanks to Bjorn for convincing me to get this amazing album!

I don't mean for the title of my review to be misleading. I respect and like black metal, and I realize that their minimalistic ideals in their music are probably harder to compose than one would think. I'm not the biggest black metal fan, as I prefer the technical proficiency of death metal to the more atmospheric black metal. However, this black metal album stands out among the rest. Actually, this album is melodic blackened death metal, which probably explains the unusually complex guitar here. Jon's guitarwork rips and tears with a variety of riffs and melodies, ranging from technical death metal riffs, palm muted, crunchy thrash riffs, cold black metal tremelo picking, and melodeath style melodies that fall on the darker side of the genre, not to mention some breathtaking leads and solos. This may very well be the first blackened death metal album, and it's a classic album in both black metal and death metal.

5 out of 5 stars Just brilliant........2007-05-07

This is the ultimate Dissection. The cream of their crop. My favourite songs are Retribution - Storm Of The Light's Bane and Thorns Of Crimson Death. Retribution is especially good to listen to at night when you're in a really dark mood.

Of course, all of the songs are great. This album is the hair on the balls of death/black metal. Jon (the frontman for those new to Dissection) may have made some disagreeable turns in his life, but he was a damn good musician.

5 out of 5 stars Black Death en la cima.......2007-04-18

RECOMENDADO.

5 out of 5 stars There will never be anything like it.......2007-03-31

With the unfortunate history of Jon aside, let us all gather in awe around this album. While many bands like Behemoth try there hardest to replicate this, nothing will ever come close. You ever heard of blackened death metal? Dissection created it, and perfected it on Storm of the Lights Bane. The riffs are freezing, shards of ice that swirl in your head for weeks, while the soft acoustic passages allow for you to reflect on the darkness that you are hearing. While bands try as much as they can to make there music sound evil, this is pure evil. The kind of evil that chills up your spine while your trying to sleep, the kind of evil that howls against the windows during a storm.

Yeah, I know, this review is cheesy, but this album is nothing short of perfection. I can tell you a boat load of bands that try to recreate this album, but until you actually listen to this, you probably wouldnt believe me.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD.......2007-01-11

Every Dissection CD that I have heard is awesome. I'm glad I got to know them before Jon's passing.

5 out of 5 stars You won't regret it!.......2006-11-22

This CD is EXCELLENT! This is not the CD with the Scrubs theme song--that album is "All the Time in the World." This album, in my opinion, is much better. I only like a few songs on the other album, and feel that I wasted my money when I could have just downloaded "Superman" from Itunes. However, I love almost all the songs on this album--especially track 10 "Overkill"--which features Collin Hays.

2 out of 5 stars Unremarkable album.......2002-12-04

Lazlo Bane's 1996 remake of Men At Work's "Overkill" is one of the best remakes of the 1990's. Featuring a cameo vocal by the former 'Men At Work' frontman, this version of the song is clearly a superior rock-and-roll version of the original. That said, the rest of "11 Transistor" is generally a passable but unremarkable garage-rock album. There are a couple of above-average tracks (only slightly above-average), but on the whole the disc is not a memorable production. Certainly nothing on the album comes close to the polished "Overkill" remake.

Lazlo Bane's frontman was a former member of "School of Fish", a band who's first album, the self-titled "School of Fish", is still one of my personal favorites 10 years after its release.

I suggest saving your money on "11 Transistor" and instead making an investment in "School of Fish" and look for the 1997 promotional CD single of "Overkill" which includes three variations of this excellent remake.

3 out of 5 stars Lazlo Bane: 11 transistor.......2002-01-27

Sadly I was a little dissapointed in this CD. There are a small handfull of good songs, nothing to scream about, and a whole lot of pitiful songs on this CD. I may need to listen to it again, but to listen to it once was hard enough. Sorry Lazlo, I really like your 'Superman' song, in fact, I love it and was hoping the CD would have it on it and other songs like it.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is a Must.......1999-12-17

This is one of those rare CDs where every song is fantastic, and you won't tire of multiple listenings. "Flea Market Girl", "I'll do Everything" - literally, every song is a gem. I can't listen to "1975" without jumping around my house! Buy this CD and prepare for happiness...

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding power pop with a melancholy twist........1999-07-02

Full disclosure: I have a very very indirect connection to the band. In fact I got the CD free from a friend of the band who I know well. My initial reaction when he gave me the disc: "Oh great. I'm sure this is going to suck."

Surprise! This is a GREAT CD and one which I have listened to many, many, many times. To my ears, it combines elements of the Replacements' later albums, XTC, and Men at Work (!). Not the usual stuff. But excellent. Where's the follow up?

5 out of 5 stars awsome.......2004-09-09

bane rocks... one of the best shows ive been to was with these guys and throwdown... a while back... they bring so much energy. a lot of new jacks dont like it but i guess u just have to like old school hardcore

5 out of 5 stars ''i'm calling you OUT".......2003-12-14

an amazing new school hardcore cd done in a youthcrew vein. the lyrics consist of talking about problems w/others and the scene. i just saw these guys with mental and comeback kid a little while back. amazing show. definitely pick up this cd if you don't already have it. standout tracks: f-ck what you heard, struck down by me, and can we start again.

5 out of 5 stars amazing piece of work.......2000-01-22

This album is incredible, from track 1 to track 12, the music is a little diffrent from the first cd. With a lot more background screaming then in the last album. Zacks screaming is very intense just like the old Barrit days. Arron Bedard's voice sounds more stronger and even better then before,The song "I once was blind" makes me want to put down my homework and stage dive on to my bed like i was at a bane show. They do alot more on this release then the last release. They even have a chick singing at the end of "Can we start again" Much better guitar work on this album and a great recording job by Steve Austin. The layout is also a 5 star showing all pictures from war. Almost reminds me of National Geogrpahic at times. Great lyrics, Great Album, Great Layout this is a must buy, so get off your butts and start the mosh.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome album, although not exactly what I expected........2000-01-09

This is a great album but I don't think its holds up to Holding This Moment...still a must for your hardcore collection. Go see them live if you haven't and if you have then I'm sure you'll go see them again.

5 out of 5 stars Another great Bane album.......1999-12-31

If you liked "Holding This Moment," you're going to love this album. The same great song writing as usual, but the music has sort of a different style, but not in a bad way at all. A little faster but just as catchy as the first CD.

True heavy metal featuring killer riffs, scorching solos, memorable vocals, poignant lyrics, and a tight, imaginative rhythm section.

Album Description

Hot on the heels of their strong debut 'Heart Of A Killer', which featured Tim 'Ripper' Owens of Judas Priest, comes their 1997 album full of crunchy guitar riffs and catchy melodies ala prime Megadeth. There has already been excellent reviews in both the European and Japanese press. 1997 DCA Records release.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great Megadeth akbum!.......2007-01-26

as a previous reviewer said, this album is awesome and Megadeth should have released it, this is kinda true toe vox are Mustaine all over lol. Winters bane is an awesome band and the newer album is the best yet!!

5 out of 5 stars Different but still very enjoyable........2006-07-04

I came to this CD after first buying Heart of a Killer. Less power metal and more traditional metal, maybe partly inspired by the loss of Tim Owens and the guitarist taking over on vocals with a totally different voice. However I really enjoyed this CD, and feel that most Megadeth, Metallica, Testament, etc fans will enjoy it. However what I didn't enjoy was the trouble I had searching to find a second-hand copy. Please re-release this CD. I think I prefer Heart of a Killer, but it's a close call for me.

5 out of 5 stars The Album Megadeth Should Have Made.......2001-02-25

Girth is the album MEGADETH should have made as the follow-up to Rust In Peace. Guitarist Lou St. Paul totally smokes, coming up with riff after great riff, and playing some very tasty solos.

3 out of 5 stars Winters Bane - Girth.......2000-06-26

Girth is the follow up of Heart of a Killer, but without Tim Owens ( now frontman of Judas Priest ). Musically the Album rocks, but the vocals lack the power and tecnique of Owens. I believe the guitarrist is singing; he sings well but after someone like Owens I feel they sould have gotten another gifted singer. I read that at this time they are looking for a new singer in the vein of Tim Owens, so their next CD sould once again deliver the goods.

Album Description

To say that Bane has been a driving force in the hardcore scene for the last decade would be an understatement. The band is synonymous with classic, sincere hardcore and passionate live performances followers still talk about to this day. From the release of their EP Holding This Moment for Equal Vision in the late 90's Bane cemented their role in the development of the hardcore community. Bane would go onto release two more highly influential albums by the end of 2001, It All Comes Down To This and Give Blood. In true Bane form, they supported these releases with a myriad of US, European and Japanese tours which lasted for the next three years. In the interim, the hardcore / underground scene experienced something that was only a matter of time; mainstream attention. This gave rise to band after band of what would soon come to be thought of as insincere duplicates with ever lessening creative value. In short, the underground community had been co-opted by mainstream interests and was losing sight of what was important - the love of music and the community around them. Enter Bane's first studio album in three years - The Note. An unabashedly unapologetic 10 song wake-up call to everyone who has somehow lost their way and become disillusioned with the state of today's underground music scene.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars you expect so much more.......2006-03-23

If this is going to be your first encounter with Bane, do yourself a favor and start with either "Give Blood" or "It All Comes Down To This." Hell, go for both if you can. I listened to this CD and was not intrigued some of the tracks. The sound has somewhat lightened, as some know that Bane's music always comes close to brutal. Their message is still there and that's why I gave them at least 2 stars. But, since I bought this at one of their shows, I can't even force myself to listen to this CD. Some of the songs are just boring and I'm glad I haven't been to a show where they play their new stuff. I kind of just bought the CD because I love these guys, but I surely don't listen to it.

4 out of 5 stars Not their best but better than most.......2005-07-04

Bane is just one of those bands in hardcore that you know for always releasing a quality hardcore record and "The Note" is nothing short of that, although its probably not their best effort. Traditional hardcore, for me, has very few bands in which really stick out to to me and Bane is one of them. Mostly because Aaron Bedards unique and melodic vocal approach and their ability to write dynamic guitar riffs ala Comeback Kid (well, I suppose that comparison should be the other way around unless your new to hardcore) but like Comeback Kid's "Wake The Dead," "The Note" is a breath of fresh air into a pretty stale hardcore genre that seems more concerned with breakdowns and "being tough." Tracks like "End With An Ellipsis" and "Swan Song"(my favorite track on the entire album) find Bane experimenting areas of melody they haven't gone before. "Swan Song" has a real epic feel to it with guest vocals from the lead singer of labelmates Silent Drive (whose name escapes me at the moment). Other highlight tracks include "Pot Committed" and "Wasted On The Young."

Production wise, the album feels a little weak which is probably why people don't feel this record comes across as heavy as their previous releases. The comic book-styled artwork is great and the booklet and has some really cool illustrations. All in all, a worthy purchase for someone looking to start at the top of the hardcore ladder.

3 out of 5 stars Where Did The Heaviness Go?.......2005-06-20

Review by Tyler Wagnon:

Every time you put on a Bane album, you expect certain things. Aaron Bedard's unique vocals, energetic songwriting, pounding drums, and passion. For the most part, The Note delivers, but it isn't quite what we have come to expect out of Bane.

First of all, The Note has way too many slow parts. Perhaps age isn't getting to these guys, but the energy level just isn't where it needs to be. Part of it could be the rather weak production, the guitars are really thin and don't have much punch, but even the writing itself has gotten a little slower and more melodic. You can't really say the band has matured either, because they have showed countless times that they are mature writers.

Regardless, The Note still has the same driving, passionate lyrics delivered in typical Bedard style, which is what really sets the band a part. Still, one would really like to see them rip out more ragers like "Hoods Up" and keep the energy up because hardcore is supposed to be HARD.

The main issue on the album is the production and it's more than likely that these songs sound infinitely better live. It's a Bane album, so you know it isn't bad, but after 4 years of waiting for a new Bane album this is somewhat disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars Hardcore will never die.......2005-05-24

This CD is just great. The mainstream can listen to Underoath, Senses Fail, My Chemical Romance, and all the other post-hardcore bands (which are good and I enjoy them), but this is pure hardcore, and this hardcore will never die. Hardcore is popular now in the mainstream and it will fall off the mainstream radar, but it will never die, because of artists like this coming out with good old hardcore albums like this. Bane is one of the greats and will stay one of the greats with albums like this.

5 out of 5 stars GIVE BANE YOUR NOTES.......2005-05-19

Hell yeah, everyone should buy this cd. Let these guys get a couple bucks, they definitely deserve it. These guys are true, and have very meaningful lyrics as always. You can feel the heart. This is hardcore. Well, other than the Swan Song (which i actualy like...a lot) has a moment of singing. Always sick breakdowns, and every one unique. I guess the standard thing to do is compare it to Give Blood. Give Blood is better, but this gives you an awesome NEW album to remember the words to!

Anyways, go see them live, preferably without barriers, and GO OFF. Just try to walk on someone else's head! Its only like 11 bucks, u would not regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Arguably one of the 10 best hardcore CD's ever........2003-01-19

I don't generally bother to write reviews, but for this, I make an exeption. This record is simply phenomenal, and I wish I had words adequate to describe it. All I can really say is that it's one of those rare things in life that, for me at least, defies cynicism and manages to say something lasting. I suppose, if I wanted, I could rave about the guitar work on this record, or the drumming, or the vocals, or the hard-hitting lyrics- but this record, and Bane as an entity, exemplifies the idea of a whole that is more than the sum of its parts. Holding This Moment is not just a good straightedge record, not even a good hardcore record- it's a good record, period, and worth a listen no matter what your musical tastes. And if you like hardcore at all, I shouldn't need to tell you to buy this, because this is right up there with Crown of Thornz and Gorilla Biscuits on the list of essentials. Easily Bane's best work, and of a caliber most bands can only dream of achieving.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD!!!!!!.......2001-11-28

This cd is excellent!! The energy and lyrics make up for the poor sound quality of the cd. this cd is a must buy for any music fan that likes to listen to their music loud.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Hardcore.......2001-07-16

A really great cd that shows what hardcore is and what its all about. The cd reflects what hardcore really used to be and how even though alot of bands around now are all playing the same things, Bane can remain original. Its an old hardcore sound in the new hardcore scene. All the tracks are fricken great and help add to the bands completely awesome live performances. Definetly one of the best HC cds out.

5 out of 5 stars The best positive straightedge album out!.......1999-10-27

This is a must have for any hardcore fan. A great mix of the old and new schools which has a positive message. Superhero is what being straightedge is all about. Bane is also a tremendous live band, the sing-alongs on the album work really well live.

5 out of 5 stars Hardcore at its very best!.......1999-03-27

The one thing I miss most about Massachusetts is the local hardcore scene. This album is filled with emotion and a fine example of hardcore music at its best-its really the best musical investment I've ever made-no kidding. This is one album that DOESN'T get old--no matter what! Aaron Berdard does an unbelievable job of conveying his emotions through these lyrics which keep you wanting more and more. I must have listened to this CD at least a hundred times and I'm ready to hear it again right now. From "Both Guns Blazing" to "Every Effort Made" this album is filled with hardcore music at its finest example. If your reading this and don't by this album, you're really missing out. I guarantee you'll love this one.
