Smooth-jazz musicians sometimes get bashed by naysayers who don't believe they possess the goods to play "real jazz" - you know, the kind that's supposed to put hair on your chest. Keyboardist Alex Bugnon gets that rap occasionally, but it's guilt by association only. Dig: Many is the person who thought Herbie Hancock, for example, was selling out, way back when, with his Headhunters band. And many of those people are just now beginning to enjoy the band's innovations. So, the guy who can't hear the beauty of bugnon's music today may just come around to it in, say, 20 years. And here's what Johnny-come-lately will hear when the light finally comes on, if he happens to be checking out "...As Promised": soulful, resonant horns, keyboards, and wah-wah guitars on "Onward, Upward"; a version of John Coltrane's "Naima" that looks to hip-hop without losing the lovely ballad's otherworldliness; Lalah Hathaway's sweet scatting on the gritty "Won't Be a Fool"; and the vibrant sonic landscape of "Simple Song," with Hathaway's warm vocals floating over a deep bass groove and Bugnon's keyboard lines flying like eagles into the distance.

The word "fabulous" seems vulgar when applied to the Spanish diva whose delicately shaded voice encompassed music from the middle ages to the present. This four-disc compilation emphasizes her song repertoire, to which she brought warmth, intelligence, linguistic integrity and irresistible sincerity. Her dignity makes listeners want to come to her, and she rewards them with an intimate, personal experience, especially in this small-scale repertoire by Ravel, Debussy, Duparc, Fauré, lots of Spanish composers and German masters such as Schubert and Brahms. --David Patrick Stearns

This 4-CD set is a tribute to the concert career of the great Victoria de Los Angeles. The first 3 CDs show her totally at home in the art song of France and of her native Spain. In the French art songs, her silvery, creamy tone, her legendary legato and her perfect French diction make for wonderful and unforgettable performances. These include a sensual Scheherazade, magnificient singing in the Duparc songs and a phenomenal Poeme de L'amour et de la mer of Chausson (try to keep your eyes dry by the end of La mort de l'amour). In the Chausson, while de Los Angeles does not opt for the intensely Wagnerian approach, her sensitive singing more than does justice to the poetry and the feelings of the character. The Spanish songs showcase de Los Angeles at her most natural, flamboyant and attractive singing. The tunes are catchy, full of bouncy rhythms and De Los Angeles's fabulous voice never ceases to amaze. The 4th CD shows the wonderful chemistry between de Los angeles and the great Gerald Moore. While she does not erase memories of Fischer-Dieskau and Schwarzkopf in the Schubert selections, the Brahms songs are excellent and her Faure songs here are earth shaking in their elegance and refinement. The Italian and the famous Handel aria helps to prove De Los Angeles's reputation as an excellent bel canto singer. Her duets with Fischer-Dieskau are absolutely memorable and gorgeous.
The set comes with booklet including full words plus translations, helpful notes on De Los Angeles's concert career and a dozen of beautiful and rare black and white photos. Victoria de Los Angeles's concert career was as prolific as her legendary operatic performances and continued well after her retirement from the operatic stage. This introspective and almost encycopledic release is a real treat and is absolutely recommended. I totally agree with the editor's review who states that the word "fabulous" fails in every respect to fully capture the artistry of the Spanish soprano. Victoria de Los Angeles is definitely one of the most wonderful lyric sopranos of the 20th century and is one of the most heavenly artists to have ever graced the concert scene. A must-have for any collection.

The album is a marvelous sampling of this great singer's artistry. Her performances of the French and Spanish composers are something special. The De Falla "Seven Popular Folksongs" are powerful, passionate; the last song, "Jota," raised the hair on the back of my neck.

I was delighted to see Faure's "Claire de lune" on the album, and equally delighted with De Los Angeles' elegant rendition of this work. The only recording of the song I've liked better is from an LP featuring Frederika Von Stade.

As an added bonus, several duets with the great baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau are featured on Disk #4. These include some charming settings of Irish songs by Beethoven, and a gorgeous arrangement of "Let Us Wander" by Henry Purcell. I remember hearing these duets years ago on an LP recording, and it was a pleasure to hear them again.

This cd is absolutely phenomenal! While slightly deviant from what would be considered prototypical Alex Bugnon, this piece is incredible! Alex's genius is well displayed from the sultry "Won't Be a Fool" featuring Angie Stone to "Chasing Spirals" with Branford Marsalis. The way Alex chose compositions which showcased the talents of the guest artists as well as his own goes beyond brilliant! This disc is a must have!

This album is not just smooth, but has a bit of a hard edge to it which I like. Alex B. does show that he can get his groove on, in this genre, with the rest of a star studied array of artists on this album - Gerald albright, Victor Bailey, Poogie Bell (drummer extraordinare!), Branford Marsalis, not to mention Angie Stone, Lala Hathaway, Christopher Williams - Mr Bubnon really couldn't really go wrong...

From what I've heard, this is his best album to date and doesn't pretend to be anything else than the smooth jazz that it is - although I reckon that it's just a little more soulful and that the musicians are showing more of what they can do on this album than your regular "smooth jazz album".
A good album to have.

One thing I'd say on the smooth jazz argument - I just wish people would just stop comparing smooth jazz artists with contemporary/straight ahead jazz artists. There are similarities, but I'm sure that they don't want to be compared with each other! They are different genres, one never claims to be the other, with the only similarities being the instruments played!

Oh, and that main review (above) by Larry Nai, JAZZIZ Magazine - Angie Stone had the "sweet scatting" vocals on "Won't Be a Fool" .........Also Herbie H. took the flack for changing from straight ahead jazz to jazz fusion, smooth jazz artists are taking the flack for having the word "jazz" as the description of the music they play!! Buy it of you like it, leave it if you don't.

Alex is a smooth jazz guy, but even though, you can tell by the way he plays that he could hang tough with some real jazz pianists. This guys stuff really grooves. I listen to cats like herbie, mulgrew miller, and danilo perez, but I would buy this man's stuff along with Joe sample.

I have been a fan of Alex Bugnon since 1991. I love his music. I have to admit that "As Promised" is my favorite by him. I believe that you would have to have a passion for smooth jazz in order to understand where Alex is coming from on this release. This CD has a laid back feel to it that wouldn't appeal to those who desire intensity for their listening pleasure. I think the CD could have done without track number 1, but other than that I enjoyed the entire CD. Alex's music has sophistication and style. He's original, even in some of the remakes. You know an Alex Bugnon track when you hear it. I truly love it.

Sorry to say I like Bugnon's 1999 "Love Season" cd much better. This cd has more of a "Soul Train" sound that probably works better in clubs than it does in my living room. Still, a few cuts are pretty good, just not quite outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars Moravian songs, via Janacek, Godar, Bittova and Skampa.......2006-05-09

This is a unique recording of Janacek's transcriptions of Moravian folk songs. Originally for piano and voice, they have been transcribed by Slovak composer Vladimir Godar for string quartet and (occasionally) three-voice male chorus. Here they are performed by renowned Czech singer and violinist Iva Bittova, accompanied by the Skampa Quartet and chorus. The effect is not so much of classical liede, but of authentic eastern European "popular" songs - the sonority of the string quartet adds to this in no small part. Janacek would be proud.

I honestly did not know what I was getting myself into when I bought this CD. I love Janacek, I love folk songs... how could I go wrong? Iva Bittova! I was concerned that she would have a 50yr old woobly voice, but instead what exists is a thin VERY nasal tone... perhaps she should be singing traditional Bulgarian music! The voice is expressive, just ugly.
The recording quality is not very good, either. On many of the tracks, Iva seems to be muffled and in the background of the recording.
Really - dont waste your time and money, unless you really would just like to have a recording of over 50 Janacek songs.

          Maybe the sound quality isn't the greatest, but Red Scare was the real thing. Before there was grunge or the Seattle sound, before a lot of the so-called "punk" groups formed, there was Bobbi Brat. She was there from the beginning of the hardcore scene in Los Angeles, and she had an amazing voice. I didn't realize, though, just how good her songs were until I read the lyrics on the back of her album. I thank the members of her band for releasing this record.

          This Music is hard driving late 70's and early 80's punk rock sound. The tune automated insection reminds me of The Ramones and Sex Pistols style of this genre. It is not my personal favorite and I did not listen to the rest of the CD. The sound fidelity and music stink.

          Red Scare was an early 80's West Coast band, ostensibly part of the hardcore punk scene, but their music had definite heavy metal and gothic tendencies. But don't let that scare you away if you're more into hardcore -- this has some of the most intense thrash you've ever heard. Lead singer Bobbi Brat had an amazing voice. Sadly, she died of illness shortly after an abortive reunion around 1988. This compilation includes their sole album 'Then There Were None' from 1984, a live performance, and some demos. Recommended.
