Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Eddy Duchin Music!.......2007-06-22

Although I own five Eddy Duchin CDs, this is the one I return to the most often. The selection, placement and quality of the music is superb. The clarity and richness of the remastering by Diamond Cut is remarkable, as one discovers while listening to "You Took my Breath Away", "Night and Day", "It's De-Lovely", and "Take My Heart", just a few of the wonderful 1930s songs in this album. In addition, every singer is perfectly matched to each song. If you enjoy music of this era, you also will not want to miss "Got A Date With An Angel" by Hal Kemp and "La Cumparsita" by Francisco Canaro (Asv Living Era). This timeless and uplifting music is excellent for listening and dancing. I highly recommend this CD, another brilliant gem to add to your collection!

4 out of 5 stars Not "hot," but very good dance music.......2003-04-27

Leader of one of the most well known society orchestras during a period better known for swing, Eddie Duchin catered to those who were financially well off and for whom "hot" was looked down upon as the music for the lower classes. That he was popular is evident by the vast recorded output from which Diamond Cut has reissued 21 fox trots and two recordings in the Latin mode - "Dust on the Moon" (rumba) and "Caminito" (tango) - from the mid-1930s. "How Do I Rate With You," with a growling trumpet, is about as close to "hot" as Duchin's band gets on this CD. Don't let that discourage you from investigating this recording; it's very good dance music and there's plenty of Duchin's piano featured. Most of the original source material appears to have been excellent or adequate, however, slightly worn originals must have been used for a couple tracks. Nevertheless, it shouldn't take away from the enjoyment of the music which includes many well known standards and some very nice songs which have, unfortunately, failed to endure in popularity. Despite his recorded legacy, relatively little of his output has found its way to reissue recordings, making this CD very welcome.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Sound Quality, Professional Transfers.......2003-03-31

This CD contains some of the earlier work done by Eddy Duchin from the 30's. The sound transfer quality is exceptional barring none. I highly recommend it as it sounds as good as it would have right out of the cutting lathe amplifiers! Nice job folks. I have collected all of the Diamond Cut CD's and love them all.

4 out of 5 stars Great old music, marred by iffy cultural politics.......2003-06-13

Don Antobal was the brother of famed bandleader Don Azpiazu, whose contemporary work included the huge, breakthrough hit, "El Manisero" aka "The Peanut Vendor." He followed his brother into the music business, fronting another highly successful dance orchestra during the Depression years. Working with him over the years was wife, Marion Sunshine, a vaudeville performer who moved into Latin dance material and helped translate Azpiazu's smash hit, "El Manisero" ("The Peanut Vendor") in 1931, and who went on to compose or translate numerous other hits in years to come. Her work here ranges from cute novelty tunes such as "La Mulata Rumbera (sung here by the great bolero singer, Antonio Machin) and "The Moon Over Cuba Was High (And So Was I)" to more questionable ethnic humor such as "Hot Tamales" and "They All Look Alike To Pancho." There's other racist material on here as well, most of which is charming and some of which, like "Spic And Spanish," is a reprehensible relic of an era long gone. One odd, interesting side note to all this is that about half the tracks on here feature vocals by popular singer Chick Bullock, performing under the paper-thin pseudonym, Chiquito Bullo, in sort of the Latin American equivalent of blackface minstrel shows. Antobal certainly wasn't alone in trafficking in "manana" stereotypes, but this disc does seem to have a higher proportion of this kind of tune that most... One can find all the stereotypes and bad puns either as simply offensive, or as noteworthy traces of an older, earlier showbusiness era. The music itself, though, is top-notch, and is what redeems these old, historical recordings.

5 out of 5 stars A major release.......2000-04-18

This magnificent CD comes from Pro Piano, a small, though very, very clever Label. Their choice of Artists and repertoire in itself is a proof of their commitment and achievement in the classic piano area.

This time, they have recorded the famous pianist Vardo Rumessen, whose research on Estonian Music has few equivalents in the world of great music, in a superb repertoire from Composer Heino Eller. This is a very good choice because the latter although being remarkable, is not very well represented on record.

Heino Eller is considered as the Father of Modern Estonian Music. Indeed, he has dedicated his long artistic life as training such composers as Tubin, Pärt and Sumera. That is in itself a remarkable achievement!

As early as the twenties, Eller, brought new winds in his music, notably in his first two quartets (available on old Melodiya LPs), which use motoric rhythm and polytonality. The Preludes were composed from the beginning till almost the end of his composer's life and thus they give you a hint of his evolution in style, which includes his modernist period. Eller is starting on the basement of the late Scriabin harmonies to evolve in a post romantic, and sometimes expressionist style. This results in a music, which happens to be eruptive at times and quite dissonant but carefully packed in a sensitive way. The mood of the music is in the end quite introspective to my mind.

Pianist Vardo Rumessen has all the power required at times in these pieces but also this special sensitivity that makes these pieces sound like delicate jewels of Music.

Another major piece of Eller on CD is his "Elegie" for Harp and Strings available in Chandos 8525 or 7039.

3 out of 5 stars Snap! Crackle! Pop! - Hines krispies.......2007-01-22

On the first five tracks of EARL HINES & HIS ORCHESTRA 1932-1934 and 1937, surface explosions are in the forefront. You can almost feel the tracking stylus being chiselled to death by the various pits and imperfections it encounters. This barrage of noise presents quite a distraction. Things improve after that and the listener is able to concentrate on performance, rather than record condition.

It then becomes apparent that Hines had a nicely talented group of musicians who acquitted themselves well on some interesting tunes. The band swings nicely here, and the several sides that feature vocalists are equally engaging. This "alternate version" collection turns out to be a decent exploration of "Fatha's" earlier jazz orchestra work.

Liner notes include session personnel and recording dates.

5 out of 5 stars The recording of choice of the Grieg concerto.......1999-10-27

This reissue of Gieseking's 1937 recording of the Grieg Concerto is especially welcome. It is the performance I grew up on in the `40s and rehearing it confirms my youthful estimate: it is one of the great performances of anything and the best of this concerto. Gieseking recorded the Grieg three times, later with Furtwangler and Karajan. The former I haven't heard, but I cannot imagine it an improvement. The latter is not recommended; Karajan swoons and the music dies. This performance sings, and a played-to-death piece comes to surging life. Gieseking treats the concerto as a big piece, but never overpowers it, and the result is a proper balance between drama and tenderness few pianists can manage. For those who know little of Gieseking's playing, this recording is the perfect introduction to his unique pianism-it's all there: perfect technique, pellucidly clear textures, even across the range of the whole keyboard, every note struck dead-on, from glistening pianissimos to plangent fortissimos. Gieseking was one of the great colorists, and this performance is right up there on top with his Debussy and Ravel. Here, all his skills come together in a great lyric outpouring probably surpassed only when Lizt sight-read the concerto in manuscript, with Grieg looking on. Lizt pronounced it a work of genius, and Gieseking's performance confirms that judgment.
