Fans of the genre called deep house owe much to pioneers like Jay Denes, whose Beautiful Tomorrow (2002), recorded under the moniker Blue Six, introduced many to a silky and impeccably produced cocktail of jazz-house soundscapes. For fanciers of Tomorrow, Aquarian Angel--which is chock full of the vocal stylings of house sirens Lisa Shaw and LT (Aya)--does not disappoint. On the captivating "Here I Come," Shaw's smoky voice chants "this day's done, build another in its place" over a chilled organ line, and LT's singing makes the title track a spot-on lullaby for the urban set. Like Tomorrow, Angel is house made more for the lounge or beach than the floor, as the lush harmonies of "Half Life" and the Brazilian-inflected "I've Given Enough," whose throaty sax line that would make Chet Baker smile, attest. And while some may find Angel's atmospherics a bit saccharine, Denes's crystalline mixing is truly astounding. There is also a sincerity and dimension to the music that sets Angel apart from the genre's more formulaic productions and lures the listener back to tracks that don't immediately make sense. After all, they call it "deep" house for a reason. --Brent Kallmer

Album Description

Blue Six, the production alias of Jay Denes, New York-based musician and co-founder of the highly-regarded Naked Music label, will release his eagerly-anticipated second full-length album, Aquarian Angel on March 13, 2007. By blending underground sensibilities with soulful grooves and lyrical seductiveness, Aquarian Angel continues to do what Blue Six and Naked Music are known for - taking dance music to the next level with mature albums that are synonymous with soulful, stylish sophistication.

Originally a production company, Naked Music was formed in 1998 by Jay Denes and his partner, fellow musician Dave Boonshoft. As the signature artist who captured the essence of the label, Blue Six quickly proceeded to capture the attention of the music scene with their underground dance classics "Sweeter Love" and "Music & Wine" rapidly becoming the ubiquitous soundtrack for scores of clubs, restaurants and bars, from New York to London to Paris.

Aquarian Angel is the follow up to Blue Six's full-length Naked Music debut, Beautiful Tomorrow (2004), which was a dazzling collection of tracks that combined dance grooves and R&B vocals with darkly intelligent lyrics. Aquarian Angel takes all the elements that made Beautiful Tomorrow so well loved and evolves into adult dance grooves and R&B-styled vocals that are cross-fertilized with Brazilian beats, ambient backdrops, and elements of jazz. Additionally, the upcoming CD reunites Jay with the three unique voices that helped make Beautiful Tomorrow such a classic: The triumvirate of label mates, Aya, Lisa Shaw and Catherine Russell return to lend their very different vocals styles, three distinct voices that, over the course of the album, combine to create that instantly recognizable Blue Six sound.

Denes spent the time between Beautiful Tomorrow and Aquarian Angel producing solo albums for both Aya and Lisa Shaw. Aya's "Strange Flower" and Lisa's "Cherry" garnered rave reviews and continue to get consistent radio-play worldwide. After these two intense collaborations, he was ready to compose the Aquarian song-cycle, writing each piece with a specific vocalist in mind. Musically, he has concocted a hybrid that combines his own expert manipulation of state-of-the-art computer technology with the warmth and unpredictability of live musicianship. As a result, Aquarian Angel breathes with a life of its own as it caresses your body and plays with your mind. "Tropicalia", a lush Afro-Brazilian track that features Lisa Shaw, is the first single off the album. Its infectious percussion-driven rhythms will entice DJ's of all stripes.

"On Aquarian Angel I threw all my musical preconceptions out the window," says Denes. "My only intention was to communicate my thoughts and feelings as they presented themselves to me. I think the end result is more varied and broader in scope than my previous work and will ultimately be as meaningful to my listeners as it has been to me."

3 out of 5 stars Aquarian Angel.......2007-07-10

This cd has the "Blue Six" sound. It is extremely mellow and heavenly... If you like the first cd, you may like this one as well. More of an easy listening, chillout flow, extremely mellow - some songs have an angelic flow...

5 out of 5 stars this music is sublime.......2007-06-23

as with other reviewers, i was skeptical that this release would live up to its illustrious predecessor. not only is it as good as the first blue six release, it is even even more sublime. jay denes (and miguesl migs) practically invented this genre of chilled out deep house grooves and jay totally delivers on this fantastic follow up. i would say that these are some of the best performances from lisa shaw and aya to date. the productions values are outstanding. listening to this cd makes me want to travel to a far away island and sip rum drinks on a tropical beach with someone very special while watching the sun slip into the deep blue (six)...

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!! Another great work from Blue Six...KUDOS NAKED MUSIC!!!.......2007-06-09

The first 30 seconds I was hooked on the ambient, more mellow sophomore "gem" from Blue Six. This album is absolutely incredible musically and vocally. It is alot different from "A Beautiful Tomorrow". The bossa nova feel of the album is a nice touch. I love Lisa Shaw's voice. My favorite vocalist on the Naked Music label. Now do not get me wrong, Aya and Catherine Russell are great, and incredible vocalist as well. Tropicallia sets the stage for the album. There is not song I do not like. Some other standouts for me are "Half Light", "I have Given Enough", "A Women of the World", "Here I Come" and "Fast Free Delivery." NOTHING I have ever purchased from the Naked Music Inc and family has been a disappointment. Jay Denes continue enriching us with your sound and creativity in this often tragic age of soulless music. Always a supporter.

5 out of 5 stars More mature, but still great........2007-05-24

When I first listened to Aquarian Angel, I was trying to compare it to A Beautiful Tomorrow, but there is not much to compare. In fact you may be disappointed if that is what you are looking for. However, this album still probides a mellow, lounge-type selection of great music. You can definitely drown your mind into this album and get away to a place you want to go anytime and anyplace with this album. If you like the laid back drums and easy voices of lisa shaw, catherine russell, and aya; you will appreciate Aquarian Angel.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad of a CD!.......2007-05-19

"Aquarian Angel" was what made me get the CD because of the fact that my sign is Aquarius. But trust me, this CD is not bad at all with the jazz, house, and soul trying to chill out, you know what I'm saying? The only reason why I rated "Aquarian Angel" 4 stars was because of the fact that Blue Six didn't have more remixes. But that's okay. I'm going to accept the CD for the way it is! It is still good, no matter what. Please buy this CD if you are interested in music like this!

Re-recorded, remixed, overdubbed and repackaged--all before its 1970 American release, mind you--Let It Be has long been the most second-guessed album in the Beatles otherwise sterling catalog. This curious, three-decade-late, stripped-down rethink offers up yet another spin on what started as a back-to-the-roots album/documentary project called Get Back in January, 1969, but ended up as the band's de facto swan song 18 months later. Paul McCartney in particular has long been irked by producer Phil Spector's grandiose orchestra and choir overdubs to the title track and "The Long and Winding Road," and indeed the "bare" versions here have a distinct, plaintive charm lacking in Spector's typical pomp. All the various snippets of studio and live chatter that seasoned the original have been removed, leaving the recordings to be judged on their essentially live-in-the-studio merits. If the intent was to "de-Spectorize" the album, the inclusion of John Lennon's 1968 benefit track "Across the Universe" and George Harrison's "I Me Mine" (which marked the last-ever Beatles session in January, 1970) in their original versions seems equally odd, the legendary producer having appended them to the album's original track listing in the first place. The rambling "bonus disc" of conversation and song snippets culled from hundreds of hours of session and film tapes may fascinate diehard fans, but it also underscores the murky, often unfocused state of affairs the Fabs found themselves in during the last year of their remarkable career. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Forget the Original and Buy this one........2007-07-02

A lot of people don't want history messed with, but I, for one am glad that this has come out. I bought the original album in the 70's and as a Beatles fan was very disappointed. It just didn't sound like them to me. I replaced all my Beatles albums on CD when the time came--except for this one. You know from other reviewers the tale of this album's creation, but let me say that this is probably the closest we will get to hearing these songs as they might have sounded if The Beatles had stayed together long enough to actually finish this project. This sounds, to my ears, much more like the Beatles. The greatly improved sound quality is reason enough to buy this cd. I don't miss "Maggie Mae" or "Dig it" which were nothing but useless filler. All the banter being gone, makes it a much more polished album. Including "Don't let Me Down" makes perfect sense, since it is in the film, backs the "Get Back" single and strengthens the collection of songs. I can't imagine why it wasn't there in the first place.

A minor complaint would be that it would have been nice to have a few bonus songs such as "The Ballad of John and Yoko", "Old Brown Shoe", "You Know My Name, Look Up the Number" and the single version of "Get Back." The first two, though not part of the "Let it Be" project, were comtemporaneous with the other songs and have the same sound. The Latter two were from singles related to the album. It would have also been more in keeping with the traditionally generous song selection on other Beatle albums, and these songs have never properly been put on an album(and this would be the one). Only eleven songs seems a bit stingy. The inclusion of these songs would have made this a killer album at the time, on par with their other albums, instead of the sad affair it was. I also dislike the flippant title and art work. In hindsight (always 20/20) it would have been much better to do a deluxe release of the original "Let it Be" that included these recordings. A double CD that probably would have made everyone ecstatic, since they would have what they want and could make the comparison. The Fly on the Wall bonus seems pointless and could have probably been much more substantial. Oh well.

In summary, greatly improved over the original in terms of songs and sound quality, but could use a few more songs for the money. Get this one and forget the original. If you have a need for the Spectorized versions for completeness or sentimentality, you can find them on "One" or other repackagings.

3 out of 5 stars Good but Maybe Not Essential - For Completists .......2007-06-15

As David Goodwin says in his review here, there isn't much different about this album from what most people know about Let It Be - I certainly didn't feel or notice anything dramatically different except a cleaner sound. Artistically, this was not the Beatles' most outstanding album, but neither is it unlistenable. It's hard to pinpoint why this album - which is certainly above average in every respect became relegated in the Beatles pantheon. (NOTE: I give this three stars, but that's based on Beatles standards!)

This is the band returning in many ways to its roots, still experimenting with a more American sound, while McCartney is secure in his role as a ballads composer. The jam quality of the sessions (One After 909), hearken back to where the Fab Four were, earlier in their career - and yet, seem out of place. Only McCartney sounds polished. John's standout track is Don't Let Me Down, and Get Back remains a rock classic in the vein of Back in the USSR.

It isn't an uneven album at all, but my guess is that a lack of dynamism in some respects, and the legacy of being the Beatles' final release and a somewhat throwaway effort - has created an uneven legacy for this album. Not to forget that Let It Be followed an entire slew of concept albums from the Fab 4. The sweetness of Abbey Road and the intentional disparateness of the White Album and the vividness of Sgt Peppers left Let It Be as a conceptual void of sorts.

Let It Be Naked is probably best for completists. Across the Universe is one of my favourite tracks but the version here is average. Plus I'm not sure if Paul McCartney's signature pieces - Let It Be and The Long & Winding Road - are really better off without Phil Spector's strings. Simply because most of us have been listening to those versions for years! You don't miss the stripped instrumentation on these versions either. They will likely play in your head as you hear the naked versions.

5 out of 5 stars " The Beatles Get Back" -----as it was originally intended........2007-06-03

Looking back on this album, this was how The Beatles really were. When these sessions were recorded around January 1969, they were a most fractuous "group". Nobody other than Paul, really wanted the The Beatles to continue on. John Lennon himself, at the time was so whacked out, that he could care less. Originally, they were going to release Let It Be/Get Back, in horribly recorded form. Along came Phil Spector-----who, without Paul's knowledge, added over produced nonsense, to their sound. Listen to " The Long and Winding Road"---before, and after. The reason why we have Abbey Road, is the group wanted to go out, on a better note, than the musical slop that was the fun and head games, played at Twickenham Studios/Apple.

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-05-14

My husband loves the Beatles. He has a collection most of the Beatles's songs. I even listened to the cd and downloaded to my Ipod so I can listen in a gym.

4 out of 5 stars "Let it Rest in Peace".......2007-03-29

I'm a huge Beatle fan. I "grew up" with them. And I never liked "Let it Be." "...Naked" isn't much of an improvement. Technically it actually sounds worse, although de-Spectoring was a good idea. The original plan was to have a rough, live feel to the album and, in John's words, to "have none of your (George Martin's) production rubbish."
Now you really can hear and buy "Get Back," the advanced LP pressing of "Let it Be" sent mostly to DJs. CD Maximum (Russia) has issued a number of Beatles' two-fers, and "Get Back" is coupled with "Yellow Submarine." "Get Back" feels like the Beatles and makes sense in relation to the film.
Track order:
1)One Afer 909
2)Don't Let Me Down
3)Dig a Pony
4)I've Got a Feeling
5)Get Back
6)For You Blue
7)Teddy Boy
8)Two of Us On Our Way Home
9)Dig It
10)Let it Be
11)The Long And Winding Road
"Teddy Boy" appeared on Paul's first solo album, and "Dig It" gets half-restored to 4 1/2 minutes. I do have a problem with some of the sequencing, but I finally enjoy listening to these sessions! Also, the "Get Back" cover shot is the same pic used for "The Beatles: 1967-1970."

I was on the hunt for new music because of old r&b and found Naked Music and Gaelle. This has a hint of r&b but that is ok because, it is done right with good smart song writing and a good sound. If you are looking for something different and you do not mind house, then get this cd.

Greetings,
Now this is music. Aya does a fantastic job of pulling you in and once she does your hooked. The beats and vocals are amazing. I am really impressed. I will be on the look out for more of the "Flower."

Play her while you are in the tub, entertaining company, in the car, or making love.

Enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Aya . . .ain't feelin' it.......2007-03-07

Samples of this CD suggested a nice mix of neo-grooves with fresh, unique vocals. What I heard were uninteresting and predictable tracks, weak and (at times) unintelligible vocals. Hoping to add Aya to my stable of neo-soul vocalist, e.g., Dexter, Larrieux, Badu, Scott, I found this CD better suited for the "used" sale CDs. Another reviewer said this would make great ambient music, and that makes sense; I could put this on and forget all about it.

3 out of 5 stars The title said it all........2007-05-14

The title states all that you need to know. There are a few really good 80's hits that we remember, but the rest sound pretty much the same.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent CD to add to Your Collection.......2007-01-28

First of all, the intro to David Bowie's "Lets Dance" doesn't sound very similar to the intro in "Promises, Promises." Second, both songs were released in 1983, so the chance of "Promises, Promises" copying "Let's Dance" is small. Naked Eyes is the most unique and underrated musical group of the 1980's. This cd starts out with their most popular hit "Always Something There To Remind Me," with it's stong synth. Other notable hits on the album are "Promises, Promises," and "No Flowers Please." This CD keeps it coming all the way through from the beginning to the end. All in all a great cd to add to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 Stars - Some of the Best of the 80's!.......2006-06-26

First, thanks to Pete Byrne (the surviving half of Naked Eyes, along with the late Rob Fisher) for clarifying what happened with the two greatest hits collections of Naked Eyes in his Amazon review of Promises Promises (December 14, 2005) - EMI put this earlier compilation together, leaving off When the Lights Go Out, one of only four Top 40 hits by Naked Eyes (What WERE they thinking?). Pete subsequently put together a different, and somewhat superior, compilation (the aforementioned Promises Promises collection), but when EMI decided to delete one of them, they chose the wrong one and kept this one - Promises Promises is now long out of print, and used copies are usually VERY expensive. (Byrne, of course, makes nothing on the sale of used CD's, so don't blame him for profiteering.) This "Best Of" collection only contains 15 songs (all from their two U.S., studio albums), while "Promises Promises - The Very Best Of" contains 20 (including some bonus material).

That being said, even without When the Lights Go Out, this is a fantastic collection of songs by Naked Eyes, covering 9 of the 10 songs from their first album, the self-titled Naked Eyes, never yet released on CD. The Promises Promises collection leaves off only Could Be from their first album. By the way, looking at a Naked Eyes discography, I just found that the debut album was titled Burning Bridges in other countries, including two additional songs A Very Hard Act to Follow and The Time is Now, both included on Promises Promises, but not on this compilation.

Four of the ten songs from their other studio album, Fuel for the Fire (also never yet released on CD), are left off this compilation - Once is Enough and Answering Service do not appear on either compilation, while New Hearts and Me I See in You appear on Promises Promises. Of these four, all but New Hearts appear on Everything and More, a later compilation of rarities, b-sides, and remixes.

For the completist, almost everything from the two studio albums appears on either this Best Of package or the Everything and More rarities CD (and you can pick up When the Lights Go Out on the Back-to-Back Naked Eyes / Spandau Ballet CD quite cheaply - it has all 4 of their Top 40 hits). But hopefully Pete Byrne will be successful in the negotiations he mentioned in his review, to eventually bring out ALL of the Naked Eyes recorded output on CD. And hopefully this will include the song from the Dr. Pepper commercial done by Naked Eyes that someone in another review referred to - how cool.

Though they released only two studio albums, Naked Eyes had some of the catchiest pop songs of the 80's, and this CD is an excellent collection of all (except one) of their best!

5 out of 5 stars the best underated duo of the 80's.......2006-06-06

WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE SONG" ALWAYS SOMETHING THERE TO REMIND ME " WHICH IS EVEN A REMAKE, MOST PEOPLE DON'T ACTUALLY KNOW THIS DUO YET IF YOU LISTEN TO SOME OF THERE SONGS ITS REALLY YOUR MONEY'S WORHT TO BUY THERE ALBUM. MOST OF THERE SONGS FIND THERE WAY THRU MOBILE MIXERS BUT TRY TO LISTEN TO THE SONG " WHEN THE LIGHTS GO ON" WHICH IS NOT EVEN INCLUDED HERE THEN YOU COULD SAY THAT THIS DUO COULD HAVE BEEN MORE SUCCESFUL. TOO BAD FISHER IS NOW GONE AND THERE WON'T BE ANY MORE NAKED EYES ALBUM. I RECOMMEND TO EVERYONE OUT THERE CHECK OUT THEIR FIRST ALBUM ENTITLED NAKED EYES AND YOU HEAR WHAT I MEAN

5 out of 5 stars Come on people, take it for what it is!...........2005-12-23

It was great (and still is) great music! If you are not a fan of the synth sound, then what are you even doing listening to a band consisting of only two people and a bunch of keyboards! Their song writing prowess in my opinion was unmatched at the time and has been a large factor in their longevity. The way they matched the vocals to the complexities in their programming is pure genius and I have been absolutely inspired by their ingenuity. Keyboard was the best medium for their music. I just dont picture the songs having the depth that they did in a rock atmosphere. It is too bad Rob Fisher passed away; I think in today's music arena, he would have blown everyone away. Some of my favorite songs are: No Flowers Please, Emotion in Motion, Burning Bridges, Promises Promises, and A Very Hard Act to Follow (which unfortunately is not included on this album).

5 out of 5 stars Lisa Shaw makes me happy!!.......2007-04-19

When people ask me what kind of music I listen to....I never know exactly how to describe it. From now on, I will simply say, "Go listen to Lisa Shaw." WHat a beautiful voice!! It seems so hard to find a great vocalist who will put out snappy upbeat songs. Jeez, if I have to suffer through another one of these divas who only want to drone on with slow songs....BUH! I have listened to this album an obnoxious amount of times and each time it makes me happy. I can't say enough about her delicious voice, interesting lyrics, and cool music. I hope she feels compelled to make another soon.

This CD is amazing. Every track on the cd is top notch music.

5 out of 5 stars Just Awesome!.......2006-09-11

I dont plan on writing a review of all the CDs I own, but this one is one of my favorites.

I am a newly re-born house-head. The house beast has been asleep for over 15 years and then I came across Mr. Migs by way of some of the reviews I read here on Amazon. And I learned how much the music has grown and matured and become so sofisticated! My children even tell me they like "my music" LOL!

If you like Deep House, you must own this disc. This CD has great fidelity, it thump, thump, thumps while I am at work or while I am commuting in traffic or when I am cleaning.....just whenever!

Do yourself a favor and pick it up. You will not be sorry!

5 out of 5 stars Sexy naked music.......2006-07-04

As a fan of club/dance/ambient music in general, I would always find an artist that I liked and look desperately for their music always afraid to venture into compliations in fear of having a few songs that I knew I wouldn't like.

This is certainly not the case with Nude Dimensions.

Miguel Migs (petalpusher who I liked anyways) has done wonders in this seemless transition that takes you high then brings it back down to cool and just leades you through a musical experience only a fan of such music could truely appreciate.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-12-31

This is a great CD for anyone who is even a "moderate" house music fan. Great beats, sets the chill-out mood to a level to where you and you significant other will be comfortably naked. This is a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars STOP HATIN! THIS ALBUM IS HOT!.......2007-06-13

HOW CAN SOMEONE RATE A WHOLE ALBUM BASED ON HEARING SAMPLES!!! YOUR TALKING ABOUT WHERE IS HIS SKILLS, WHERE IS YOUR MONEY! BUY THE WHOLE ALBUM AND LISTEN TO IT, YOU CHEAP IDIOT!

Now, onto Marques! This album is by far one of the very best since Immature/IMx and MH! It shows how he is maturing and experiencing what men go through. Their sexual appetite. I think it's sexy and nothing different from any other R&B male that bares their body! (hint hint D'Angelo, Usher Pretty Ricky go see one concert!)

Anyway, my favorite on this album is Everything! It is one of the most meaningful songs since Please Don't Go and All Alone. This song he really goes all out trying to express how much he loves this girl, that with all honesty no matter if they broke up or not I am jealous over this! He said "Girl you make whole you are my sister soul", I love it! I have every album from Immature to Imx Greatest hits.

Marques was always the stand out and I'm glad he's getting all the fame and money because those dudes never really added anything to the group. Kelton/LDB don't even greet his fans or try to touch their hands. All ego and he can't even sing! LOL! I stood there and watched, him treat some girls like that, all I could think is, thank god that's not me!

I still dream of meeting Marques, and just telling him how much I appreciate him keeping his music alive. When I am down his voice is so comforting, he gives me something to think about even if it doesn't happen. I have Veteran his new album also, my favorite songs are Circle and Miss Being Your Man. They are all day repeat songs. Keep up the good work Marques and congrats on debuting #1 for Veteran! Enjoy the success!

1 out of 5 stars SINCE YOU'RE NAKED....YOU MAY WANT TO MODEL...........2007-02-27

Since you want to be naked....you may want to get into modeling cause you obviousaly are out of musical talent. I guess if you don'tl have a couple of little boy toy homies backing you up you really don't have much to offer. Jesus man each song sounds exactly like the other one...I really can't tell them apart. Wow he went from B2K to B2U(Being 2 Unorginally). Come on stop putting out CD's. I haven't seen this type of musical embarrassment since Ray Jay and even he has stopped so why don't you too. You like being naked and Ray Jay just put out a porn video with his ex, so maybe you two oversexed weirdos can come up with something.

2 out of 5 stars Fairly Good.......2006-08-27

Overall it is a fairly good album. Marques Houston has grown into a fine young man. I am just as old as Marques Houston so I can remember his Immature days. In my opinion, there are very few songs that are worth being listened to over and over and some that are not. The tracks that I like are as follows:

1-All because of You
2-Sex Wit You
3-Marriage
5-Naked
6-Do You Mind
11-Everything

1 out of 5 stars Omarion's Cheaper, Less Talented Alternative.......2006-05-24

Wow, I never thought I would've found an R&B album worse than Omarion's debut until I finished listening to this album's samples on Amazon. "Naked", Marques Houston's spohomore effort, is undoubtedly the worst R&B album I have ever heard in a long while.

I apoligize for sounding harsh, but think about it. Where's the talent? Where's the skill? What about the heart & soul? Where's the musical ambition? What about meaningful lyrics & nice beats? Where's his dignity? Where's hist artistic growth? I'm betting he threw all that & so much more out the window along with his tacky clothes. Marques, take this into account...YOU'RE NOT USHER AND YOU NEVER WILL BE, SO STOP TRYING!

I honestly tried really hard to force myself to like his song "All Because Of You", but I just couldn't convince myself to do it. There's not a single song on this entire album that has any true emotional depth. His other singles, "Naked" & "Sex Wit You" are absolutely pathetic attempts at explicit sexuality, with egomaniacle, ridicuously retarded videos to boot. As if the cheesy, sexual come-ons & emotionally devoid ballads were hard enough to bare, you have miserable club tunes to complain about here & there.

Marques Houston is a perfect example of why R&B goes downhills nowadays. Anybody with a slight fraction of a brain would be aware that he has no talent, and relies on his ugly mug & flabby gut to seek the attention of ditsy tween girls worldwide. Skip this album at ALL COSTS (AND I MEAN THAT LITERALLY)!

4 out of 5 stars Sensual, Seductive, Romantic.......2006-04-18

Anybody who pays attention to top 40 radio knows Sarah Hudson is a "Girl On the Verge" courtesy of the first single from this, her debut disc. But you won't get a clear sense of just how close she is until you wade through all 11 tracks.

Turns out things are pretty dire. She's "the next big thing in your little freak show" on "Strange"; confounded by innuendo on "I Know" ("I can't hold on forever/I know that you know I know"); and, most tellingly, mad as hell at her parents (she lets them have it on the confessional, guitar-crashing meltdown that is "Little").

Still, it's hard not to like her, or at least find her fun. Hudson is cool in a Hollywood kind of way--she's the cousin of actress Kate Hudson, and her look puts a fresh if not as sunny spin on Cyndi Lauper's celebrate-the-freak-within style. Naked Truth carries the potential to sprinkle her nascent star power over two distinct camps: rebel kids not willing to lump themselves in with Avril Lavigne's skateboard punks, and teen girls too cool to be tagged with the Hilary Duff-goody-two-shoes rap. While the world decides, we can all enjoy a single slice of near-perfect pop buried seven tracks in. "I want to find peace like Mahatma Gandhi/Wanna drink champagne and be cool like Blondie," Hudson sings quickly and convincingly on "Gandhi," voicing a naked truth for all of us. --Tammy La Gorce

Sarah Hudson has strong velvet vocals, and this is a crunching CD that can't be missed!

4 out of 5 stars great cd.......2007-04-24

i love this cd! the only song that i don't like is "fake rain." it seems very out of place on this cd, where its either kinda ranting at the world or poppy. it seems she attempted to do a love song or something and it fell flat.

i like her voice and i am looking forward to more cds from her. definitely a good buy!

5 out of 5 stars LOVES IT.......2007-01-22

AMAZING, FUN, IN YOUR FACE!
I love this girl, it's pop/rock/sarcastic and truthful. You can tell she knOws where she's been and where she's going and both don't seem to be gold plated but still seem to make her shine. The title track gets put on repeat, a lot! I also love the tounge in cheekness of Ghandi and the honesty of Strange. Buy it and play it LOUD!

4 out of 5 stars You can hate her--she doesn't care!.......2006-12-18

Sarah Hudson might not have garnered the accolade she deserved upon her debut album Naked Truth's release, but that's not because she lacks talent. On the contrary, this hardcore redheaded pseudo-punk rocker has quite a lot of it actually. From her bare-all lyrics in the title track (in which she claims, "You can hate me, but what do I care?" reassuringly enough you actually believe her) to her middle-of-the-line semi-irresistible beats, there's no denying this "girl on the verge" has some admirable abilities. Lead single "Girl On The Verge" is a guilty pleasure, combining electronic instrumentation with real instruments and an incredibly catchy guitar riff. "I might be all messed up and confused, but I still wouldn't want to be you," she says, and despite its suicide-minded opening lyric ("I'm having stupid suicial thoughts") this track is really all about realizing you're you and embracing yourself. "Naked Truth," like "Girl On The Verge," is a confessional pseudo-punk rock track that begins with an acoustic guitar strum that is instantly engaging; "You can hate me, but what do I care? Everything from the tatoo on my wrist to the color of my hair," Sarah snarls in the opening lines. Like the aforementioned "Girl On The Verge," "Naked Truth" discusses a not-so-happy childhood with the blame largely put on her parents ("I already forgive you, Mom and Dad, how could you know anyway?" she asks). The song is a great listen not only for its nice melody, but because of Hudson's honest lyrics (she co-writes, you see) and earnest vocal delivery--you actually believe what she's singing about (can Britney Spears say the same?). "Ghandi" is an interesting song with an even more interesting lyric, and once again the redhead delivers an impressive vocal performance. The remainder is well-produced filler, with a few iffy tracks here and there, but nothing nasty enough to drag Naked Truth down far. Overall, Sarah Hudson is one of the more believable pseudo-punk rock chicks in recent years and her impressive debut deserves more credit than it received.

3 out of 5 stars Forgettable, narcissistic teenage angst........2006-09-29

4 out of 5 stars better than advertised.......2006-07-18

This album gets slammed a lot and I don't get why. It is not as consistently good as some of their others like Remain in Light and Speaking in Tongues, but the sound has held up as well as any Heads record, and it is certainly far more interesting and inventive than its stay-at-home predecessor, Little Creatures. Sure, sometimes the lyrics get too bizarre and kitschy like on Mommy Daddy You and I but since when did Heads lyrics consistently make sense anyway? This is a remarkably creative, varied, and interesting assortment that is pretty cohesive given its broad reach. At it's best, like on Nothing But Flowers, it's as good as the Talking Heads get. The horn arrangements on Blind and Mr. Jones jump out from the speakers, the relentless percussive attack is as good as on any of their records, and, of course, Byrne's vocals are as strong and engaging as ever, whether you have any idea what he's singing about or not. Also, the production is in my opinion superior to all their previous non-live records.

Which reminds me, the remastered dualdisc version has sharply superior sound quality, and plus features a neat bonus track called Sax and Violins, so even though you can buy the original for, like, 1 cent now, I still say get the remaster.

3 out of 5 stars not bad, but not their best.......2006-05-17

talking head's naked was released in 1988 and would prove to be thier last album together. It is also one of the most controversial of their album,s as well. not for the lyrics per se , but the quality of the album is debated among fans.many people hate this one. many love it.some don't even know what it is. my job is to give you my opnion on what i think of it.

naked was touted as a "back to basics" type album. meaning they tried to return to the mutlilayered polyrthmic sound of remain in light. instead of being influenced by african music this time TH were shooting for a more latin/south american/samba sound.although, they brought on such heavyweights as Johnny Marr(former guitarist of the Smiths) and Lenny Pickett(Saturday Night Live music coordinator)
the results are mixed.

i'm going to do this by song:

Blind:Great start to the album. if the rest of the album sounded like this it would be a classic. awesome funk horn section provided and arranged by Lenny Pickett and his ensamble;wonmnderfully goofy fake James Brown impression vocal by David Bryne and many layered rythems. the only problem is like mostof the album, the drums are programmed and often sound flat and is not really danacble look to reamin in light and speaking in tongues if you wanna dance.

mr. Jones: another neat track. the latin/samba sound is achieved with real sounding percussion that jells well with eachother. cynically funny lyrics that update Bob Dylan's character as a washed out yuppie shell of what he used to be.upbeat horns thst make you wanna groove and shimmy. this is defineatly one of the strongest tracks

totally nude:another great track. upbeat rythem and slide guitar.more cynical lyrics this time concerining the ignorant naviete of nudists.more good percussion.not samba/latin but more of a carribean tingened song slightly in the vein of(but defineatly not as good) uh-oh, love comes to town from 77.

Ruby Dear: meh, this ones ok like the song says"round and round it goes, whee it stops no one knows". this song is kinda repetitive and lifeless. the percussion saves it from being compltety horrible. david and his vioces sound tired and the lyrics are hard to understand

(nothing but) Flowers: the big hit. bounchy, chipper gutar;neat samba percussion and funny lyrics that long for the sterile safety of modern, technology dependant america make this a very solid song. This is one of the only songs were David actually sounds into doing what hes doing.

the democratic Circus: heres where the album starts to shift gears and slow down much like the two sides of reamain in light. mid-tempo percussion andd guitar. more bored, sleepy vocals that are politically charged. this a a decent political swipe at the state of our nation's politics at the time and the title especially rings true now.its a good mid-tempo song.the only annoying part is the over loud electric guitar that comes in. it grates badly with the rest of the song.

Facts of life:argh, i can barely stand this one! obnoxious, industrial like keyboards drive this song along with plastic beats and preachy, misinformated, opinionated, cliche filed lyrics that try to hard to sound intrested and intellegent (ryming Chipanzee with human being) and too top it off, it nearly runs for seven minutes and is much too repetitive. skip this one or use to torture information out of your enemies.oh, did i mention David sings in falsetto toawrds the end? i'm getting a headache right now.

Mommy, Daddy, You and I: Creepy, dark song about dyfunctional familes. the accordian is kinda annoying and the chorus is oddly and eceptivly cheery.a decent effort. David sounds creepy and slightly ric Okasik-like;cheesy lyrics hurt this song(chilly, chilly willy); but its still good

Big Daddy:another song that utilizies the horn section to its full potential. this one has more of a blues roadhouse feel to it with a harmonica making it's presence felt.more prententious, cheesy lyrics and annoying vioces keep this song from being great.

Bill: Downbeat and reptitve. plastic percussion;preachy, cliched attempt at phillosophy;stoned vocals. its ok but not really worth adding(it wasn't on the vynal verson). does nothing to enchance the album

Cool Water:this song is very dark;lyrics that remind us that while we're partying and worrying about our petty issues(like missing desperate housewives) people are being forced to do other's hard labor for little to no pay and many die;chilling vocal by David;dark, atmospheric guitar provided by Johnny Marr; quiet, yet effective brushed drums by Chris and a haunting Cor Angelis(a type of sax or flute) solo make this the best and most affecting song on the record.

Sax and violins:A bonus song only avalible on the dualdisc edition. originally included on "Until the End of the World" Soundtrack, but recorded duruing the sessions for what would become Naked. this song isn't that exciing and perobably wasn't used for a reason. it relies on electronics and is very cold soundingthe pretentious and often nonesense lyrics don't help either.however, like most of the album, the percussion saves it as does the chorus.worth checking out if your a hardcore fan.

this album is very different hen all the other TH records which is a good thing. if you are a hardcore fan, you'll like it. if you're a casual fan who liked reamnin in light you'll like this; if you liked little creatures and didn't like remain light as much stay away as you'll only find the first two songs and flowers intresting. its not their best and certainly not a great note for them to leave on but just like the seinfeld finale, closing the book on one of the most innvative and best bands of all time is really hard to pull off perfectly.this album suceeds more then it fails.like the rating says, it is a decent album.

definatly try before you buy

Having not listened to this album since probably 1990 (having been released in '88) I was very happily surprised by how well it holds up. Granted there are occasional lapses of the dreaded cutesiness that plagued Little Creatures and True Stories (I'm looking at you, Totally Nude), but they are few and, thankfully, far between.

There's a cool '70s funk vibe on Blind (dig the Shaft soundtrack horn section), a great Bo Diddley goes to Brazil feel on Ruby Dear, and an eerily prescient sting to Democratic Circus. In fact 90% of this material has not dated one iota. Overall Naked is a solid, respectable culmination of all that had gone before in the Heads musical explorations. I would posit that this, their final studio release, is the truly under appreciated gem in their musical canon, and that it warrants serious reconsideration.

3 out of 5 stars Uneven, but worthwhile........2006-02-23

After a set of stunningly different albums, prior to "Naked" it seemed the Talking Heads had settled into a groove-- their past couple albums lacked the uniqueness their earlier material had. But with what proved to be their final album, the band recaptured a sense of uniqueness, albeit via a seemingly endless blend of styles and sounds. The resulting album is at times fantastic and at times somewhat uninspired.

Perhaps the most unexepected is the James Brownesque funk opening-- "Blind" and "Mr. Jones" both hit with funky horns, slithery bass and great rhythms, but neither song quite feels right. After this, the material picks up a startling diversity, hinting at the sounds of the Pacific Islands ("Totally Nude"), Middle East ("Dear Ruby") and a touch of Eastern Europe ("Mommy Daddy You and I"). Along the way, they manage to put forth a couple pieces that are distinctly Talking Heads and recapture a bit of the old paranoid energy (the absolutely superb "The Democratic Circus" and to a lesser extent "The Facts of Life") and some of that brilliant Enoesque sound ("(Nothing But) Flowers"). But this level of diversity comes at a price, and the album feels inconsistent, or perhaps like a compilation.

This album has just been reissued in dualdisc with remastered sound-- this is definitely worth the investment to get the remaster, it's night and day from the old releases.

This isn't as fantastic as the band's peak, but after a couple lackluster efforts, it's nice to hear them go out with a bit more of a bang then you'd expect. Those who have explored their earlier work should definitely check this one out.

4 out of 5 stars Better Than People Give it Credit For...........2006-02-04

Don't let the "Talking Heads" purists put you off this album. The Talking Heads were always changing and reinventing their style while staying true to their goal of writing and recording music styles that "had never really been heard in quite that way before".

I always found that the maturity and production value of this album provided a nice foil for Remain in Light. Like the brilliant 1980 album they divide side A and B into upbeat tunes and more melancholy musical explorations. Unlike that brilliant 1980 album, the music here is not quite so esoteric and a little more accessible to the more casual music listener.

The themes of the lyrics also provide an interesting insight into the turbulent eighties.

Unfortunately, many musical fans prefer their groups to stagnate and keep producing the same sounds that their original fans had fallen in love with. People said the same things about U2, INXS, and a number of other bands that they said about the Talking Heads. This seems to be where many of the reviews on this page are coming from.

David Byrne continued to produce intriguing music as a solo artist after this disc, but this album is truly the swan song of the group, The Talking Heads, and a worthwhile addition to your CD collection.
