About the Artist
A delicious blend of Diana Krall and Ella Fitzgerald, Anna Callahan's voice is captivatingly honest in its simplicity, yet dazzlingly impressive when improvising scat solos. It is the mirror of her trumpet playing, which explores the harmonies of old standards with new melodic lines. Anna Callahan exudes a joy of performing that simply belongs on stage, where she will draw you into her world of playfulness and optimism.
Anna Callahan is an award-winning arranger and a captivating performer. She has played trumpet and sung in various ensembles ranging from small combos and big bands to tight-harmony vocal jazz groups.
Hers is a lifelong dedication to jazz: she wrote and arranged her first jazz composition for big band in high school, where she also won state awards for both vocal jazz and classical trumpet playing.
While at the University of Michigan, Anna became the leading force in the newly formed vocal group Amazin' Blue. Under her direction, the group began winning national awards for their recordings and for Anna's arrangements. Anna is the author of The Collegiate A Cappella Arranging Manual, published by Hal Leonard and considered the standard text on the subject. She was also one of four arrangers in UAAS, an international service providing arrangements for both a cappella and accompanied vocal groups.
By the age of twenty-three Anna had established herself as a gifted arranger. At this point her drive to fully understand the jazz medium compelled her to immerse herself in the other dimension of jazz: improvisation. Without any formal jazz training, she was soon able to hold her own as a trumpeter with many accomplished musicians in the Ann Arbor area, including Paul Keller (bassist for Diana Krall) and Mark Hynes (saxophonist with the Rodney Whitaker Sextet).
In Los Angeles, Anna taught Vocal Jazz at California State University at Long Beach where she led award-winning ensembles before she left to concentrate on performing. In the fall of 2000 she formed the Anna Callahan quartet, which has performed at Los Angeles clubs such as Spazio, Lunaria, Loews, and Steamers, among others. Anna's rich voice conveys the melody of a jazz standard so purely that you think you're hearing it for the first time; then she surprises you with a scat solo strongly reminiscent of Ella Fitzgerald. Her trumpet solos show the influence of Clifford Brown, while with the flugelhorn she expresses her more feminine side. Her skills as a storyteller also come through in performance, as she leads the audience through the evening with short vignettes a la Garrison Keeler.
Anna now performs with groups ranging from duets with piano or guitar to septets including other horns. These small combos are ideal for showcasing the many facets of her talent, not least of which is a vivacious personality that radiates playful energy.

There are few sounds as mesmerizing as the cascading tremolo of several mandolins playing in unison; quite literally, it's like nothing else. So it's no wonder that, at the turn of the 20th century, the mandolin--an instrument with European roots and American ingenuity behind it--became the instrument to play. Sure, the instrument's fame would fade in the mid-1920s when the banjo and guitar took center stage, but for nearly 20 years, it was America's instrument. The Gibson company--innovators in changing the style of the modern mandolin--had "teacher-agents" to help spread the gospel of the instrument and its varied repertoire while mando clubs sprang up everywhere. What were all these folks playing? As heard on this disc, a wide assortment of classical tunes, European ballads, waltzes, marches, and instrumental pop tunes. The Nashville Mandolin Ensemble performs all of these works with an amazing mastery: it's a classical ensemble like none you've ever heard before--nearly a dozen mandolins playing together. The great liner notes tell the story of the mandolin's evolution from ethnic folk to light-classical to bluegrass axe in fascinating detail, but the music--especially on 1903's "La Tipica" and 1910's "My Heart at Thy Sweet Voice"--shines. Great sonics and memorable music will have you feeling nostalgic. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Brash Bravado.......2003-10-08
This album contains music of historical importance for the mandolin. Two of the songs (My Heart at Thy Sweet Voice & Gallantry) were extremely beautiful, and were instantly among my all-time mandolin favorites. Much of the album, however, was too brash & too tinny for my taste. The "cascading tremolo" I was expecting was not as pervasive as I might have wished. If you are particularly fond of marches & dances (waltz, polka, etc.), this might be a great choice for you, but I could do without the bravado.
Modern Mandolinists Revisit the Past.......2000-03-01
This CD contains historically important mandolin music, which is lively and performed with peerless artistry. The Nashville Mandolin Ensemble provides a valuable musical perspective of the fretted instrument orchestras that were "All the Rage" at the dawn of the twentieth century. The repertoire is varied and delightful. The uniqueness of this CD will result in its being played over and over.

Ideal performance by top Canadian bop alto saxophonist.......2003-05-10
Alto saxist P.J. Perry delivers a fine set of mainstream bop, featuring three of his engaging originals, four standards, and a couple of intriguing obscurities. He's ably backed by a top-notch rhythm section, including pianist Mulgrew Miller, drummer Victor Lewis, and fellow Canadian Neil Swainson on acoustic bass. Perry's refined alto tone provides most of the drama, though he allows space for all the participants to exhibit their talents. Swainson demonstrates his melodicism on the Nordic-tinged ballad "Helsingborg", while Charlie Parker's "Cheryl" features drum breaks and a piano solo in addition to Perry's Stitt-like interpretation of Bird's articulations. The finale, Cole Porter's "Easy To Love", goes from an elegant ballad intro to an upbeat bop groove that works up a sweat, regaining composure to close out the proceedings with a courtly phrased coda.

Great CD.......2004-07-15
Wonderful straight-ahead jazz guitar record, bears many repeated listens check it out!
Perfectly dull.......2003-12-05
This CD is a classic example of many of the newer jazz artists; technically very polished, but lacking any real feeling for the music. Dan is an excellent guitarist, and plays single note bebop lines with blinding speed and excellent clarity, but after several listenings, I always come away with the feeling that he sounds like a watered down George Benson. Perhaps given time Dan will develop a unique voice and a deeper feel for jazz - he has plenty of talent, it just needs some development.
A GREAT GUITARIST.......2002-11-25
Dan Faehnle is a wonderful musician and a great performer. He is Diana Krall's guitarist now as of May of 2000. He tours with her all over, he's the best jazz player around, you wont be disapointed by this CD.

An Artist's Artist.......2006-03-18
Danielle Woerner has long been prized on the classical music scene for the exquisite intelligence of her singing and the distinctive beauty of her voice. Her range is and has been astonishing--from opera to art song--and in this recording one can her that sound and intimate sensibility which has earned her such a splendid name. Buy it!
Luscious and deeply moving.......2000-12-29
Danielle Woerner's voice is so rich and mellow, you can get lost in it. I was not familiar with this repertoire, and found Luening's setting of Emily Dickinson to be marvelous--sometimes serious, sometimes playful, always true to the deep emotions. I also liked the setting of William Blake's "Ah, Sun-flower", which Luening composed especially for this singer. I found myself listening over and over to the poems of Gail Godwin as set by her partner and collaborator, Robert Starer. The compositions are moving and complex, and Woerner makes excellent musical choices for presenting them in a way that the audience can truly feel. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Terrific!!!.......2006-01-09
Great set of songs! I happen to be a friend of hers, but I also really love this album and listen to it to this day.
The True Ideal..........2004-11-01
For music lovers that are listening for the type of jazz vocalist that leaves you spellbound and a case of goosebumps after each song, then Anna Callahan is the sweet little remedy for you. Her voice is rich and refined, along with her pristine songwriting/arranging skills to compliment her vocals & musicians. Her trumpet playing is playful and possesses a tone that blends between Chet Baker and Miles Davis. "My Ideal" is one of my favorite albums and I always love digging into her vibes. I strongly encourage any music lover to add this into their music library.
Diggin' It!.......2004-01-17
Amazing! Anna Callahan, on her debut album, sounds like one of the greats. This is a must-buy for any jazz fan. If you don't want to wait for delivery, you can download My Ideal on iTunes.
What a Lovely First Effort.......2003-02-03
I hear Chet Baker, Ella Fitzgerald, a little Dave Brubeck and Sarah Vaughn here but it's all Anna. She authored or co-authored 5 of the 11 tracks and is the arranger and producer as well. What makes this disc sparkle, though, is her generous sharing of the spotlight. Karen Hammack (piano), Barry Zweig (guitar), Rick Shaw (bass), and Jamey Tate (drums) all get their moments as well and they certainly make the most of their solos. Anna's lovely vocals and understated horn playing on "My Ideal" is a real treat. Take a few moments and download a track or two. This is one of the loveliest and most relaxing disks in my record library.
An up-and-comer.......2002-09-05
Anna is a great discovery. In addition to a fine voice, she plays a cool trumpet and flugelhorn and writes her own music. She is at her best on the standards, but her own songs show a lot of potential. Having seen her in person at the CD release party, it is evident that there is a lot of talent that is only hinted at in this album.

Album does not do her voice justice. The power of her voice comes through some on track 8, but nothing beats it live. Hope her next abulm has more "operatic" songs.
