Tweens aren't often heralded for their good judgment and excellent taste (Heelys--hello), but if any young starlet can redeem them, it's Hannah Montana. On this, the second soundtrack from the Disney Channel series, Miley Cyrus takes her cues from her TV alter ego, who has an alter ego of her own: Disc 1 features Miley as Hannah, hair-tossing pop princess by weekend, likable schoolgirl by weekday (see "Old Blue Jeans" and "True Friends" to get a sense of each episode's un-cloying sweetness). But disc 2 is the start of something new, as her friends over on the High School Musical set might say: Miley sings strictly as her spunky, truth-telling self. This yields a number of pepped-up pop tracks bound to vibrate through the walls of pink bedrooms everywhere--"See You Again" is a boy-centric song instantly relatable to anyone who's ever been in seventh grade and suffered a bout of bashfulness, "East Northumberland High" puts a punk spin on an I'm-just-not-into-you tale, and "Clear" bounces on a reggae beat while canceling any doubt about our heroine's ability to stand up for herself. A Very Good Second Album .......2007-07-10

Miley/Hannah produce some catchy songs on this great follow-up to the first album. In many ways this two-disc set is better than the first Hannah Montana album (there is no filler from other groups or singers) and there are many age-appropriate songs that adults will find themselves singing along to. They have included so many songs that not every song is a winner (some of the slow ones are boring) and songs that Miley wrote show that she is still learning how to songwrite. She also oversings a couple tunes. But overall this is very good, well produced and recommended.

Far Better than it has the Right to Be.......2007-07-06

Everyone above who is complaining that "this isn't real music" and that it is only a marketing ploy are people who haven't actually listened to the CD. The first disc (the "Hannah") side is completely how it is described. Just a boring collection of Disneyesque pop made to advertise a TV show. But somewhere along the way, someone let the album get good. The "Miley" disc is far, far better than it has any right to be. If it wasn't packaged with "Hannah Montana" it would be getting the rave reviews that follow fellow popsters Kelly Clarkson, Gwen Stefani and Robyn, because it is just as good, if not better, then them all. Unfortunately too many people like to go on and on about the end of the music business and want to keep their street cred, so they fail to actually listen to music. Pop Music isn't a bad word, and this certainly isn't bad pop music. Hopefully Pitchforkmedia, long the perveyors of too-cool-for-you indie rock, but also champions of slick-as-hell pop music will catch wind and help out the cause.

I just got a copy of this CD and can easily say I liked it. A lot of good beats and great singing. Certainly a good buy.

Not for little kids.......2007-07-06

This album is too rocky for smaller kids under 10. I have this album along with the first hannah montana album. and kids at my house will only be allowed to listen to the first one. There are 3 songs from the show that are on this album that are ok, but that is all. then Miley has the song called "I miss you" and it's ok..

For any kids here at my house, i prefer mellow music until they are 11 or 12. the smaller kids under 10 or so will not be listening to this album.

After visiting south Florida and the Keys on several occasions. I heard some of his music whilst there. Bought the cd hoping that it would take me back there whilst being in rainy cold england. It does! Job done. It takes you to sandy beaches, blue skys and laid back bars. Some tracks are a bit cheesy but typical of the sort of music you hear down there.Turn your heating up, grab a beer, close your eyes, put this album on and your almost there.Almost!!

This album is a collection of some of the best stuff Jimmy Buffett has recorded. It's a blend of old and new. Many of the songs are like old friends that you always like to spend time with and although some of the songs are newer, they fit right in with your circle of friends.
I highly recommend this album to anyone who enjoys slipping away to Margaritaville for a little while. It's music that crosses the generation gap. I'm in my 40's, my parents are in their mid - 60's and my daughter is a teenager, and we all enjoy Jimmy Buffett. If you purchase this album, you won't be disappointed.

the best JB collection EVER!.......2007-03-07

I love this collection of 38 JB songs! It has all of my fave songs on it, but I love it especialy because my 2 of my fave songs, In The Shelter (disc 2) and the ever popular Come Monday (disc 1) are together in one collection! I listen to it all the time!

Meet Joe Black, director Martin Brest's remake of the '30s semiclassic Death Takes a Holiday, took widespread critical potshots for its three-hour length and laconic pace. Ironically, composer Thomas Newman's score is a compelling exercise in musical economy--spare, emotionally longing arrangements where the spaces resonate almost as much as the notes. The composer (youngest son of the great film scorer Alfred Newman and cousin to Randy Newman) shows the same deft handling of emotional nuance he displayed on The Shawshank Resemption, The Horse Whisperer, and Oscar and Lucinda (winner of Best Original Score at the 1998 Australian Film Awards), here underplaying the story's romance and otherworldly aspects with a few piano notes and a masterful use of strings and winds. Yet another tribute to the Newman gene pool and an impressively mature work from one of Hollywood's brightest young film composers. --Jerry McCulley

I'm a slob when it comes to music..........2007-01-14

My mental stability has always been in question, especially by my grandma. However, after just minutes of absently listening to the tv in the next room, some internal radar picked up on the sensual sounds coming from the movie Meet Joe Black. I put down my bowling ball and slowly walked into the next room. I felt as if my world had changed. This music had slid under my skin and was traveling into my brain. I sat on the sofa next to my stuffed pink flamingo and tears slid down my cheeks. I listened and the sadness washed over me like an ocean. Yet I couldnt get enough. This music carries me away on adventures you wouldn't believe. Its the music I say. The emotions that cloak me from hearing the music have NOTHING to do with the actors. I just breathe the music.

Indescribably delicious.......2007-01-04

I cannot think of any score I've heard that is as poignant to the film for which it is written than Thomas Newman's "Meet Joe Black". After repeated listens I'm still fascinated by how the love theme for "Whisper of a Thrill" and "Someone Else" is both sublimely romantic and disturbing at the same time. I find that juxtaposition to be a perfect match to the film...although it had its faults, the score does not. The achingly beautiful scenes between Brad Pitt and Claire Forlani toward the end of the film owe a huge debt to Newman's score. How did the Academy overlook him for Best Original Score? He wasn't even nominated. A shame really. But no award would do this music justice. It is simply, indescribably, and deliciously beautiful.

Hard-To-Find Arrangements.......2006-12-28

Aficionados of the "classics" will love this soundtrack. The medley of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "What a Wonderful World" is worth the entire album. The instrumental music is wonderful ambient music for a relaxed or romantic setting.

An overlooked masterpiece that slipped under the radar........2006-09-09

Though the film itself may have left some viewers itching to leave the theater (with a rather gratuitous running time of 178 minutes), the score alone from "Meet Joe Black" makes it one of the more memorable films of 1998. In fact, Thomas Newman's score makes such an impact that it is able to stand out as a separate work of art all on its own. Hell, I would even go so far as to say it's a masterpiece.

Personally, I think Newman does some of his best work here. Specifically with tracks such as "Walkaway" and "Cold Lamb Sandwich", both of which are beautifully seasoned with the film's main theme. Other tracks like "Everywhere Freesia" and "Peanut Butter Man" showcase Newman's ability to compose vivacious and spirited pieces. Newman is more well-known for his moody and haunting "dark" themes, so it's nice to hear the occassional "quarky" track every once in a while, such as the previous two.

Other highlights on the soundtrack include "Whisper of a Thrill,", "Death and Taxes", and the stunning closing track, "That Next Place" (one of Newman's best compositions to date).

Granted, this may not be for every avid film score lover out there. I think Thomas Newman fans more than anyone else will tend to lean more towards it and appreciate it a little more. It is a prime example of Newman's distinguished style, and proves why he is one of the most widely respected and talented film composers in the industry today. I just find it to be such a shame that this little gem seemed to have slipped under the radar.

"Meet Thomas Newman" - The best album of his works so far !.......2006-08-08

I admit I'm a little late concidering the release date and this soundtrack is way too good to have never heard of it. But with score it's like with everything else: You must make the experience yourself! And so will the movie of "Meet Joe Black" has been recently shown on television. And I cannot begin to tell how amazed and sad at once I was -- amazed by the talent a composer can ever carry (Thomas Newman turns out to be a god) and deeply sad about how I could ever miss this beautiful composition for so many years (that's inexcusable)! This truly is - without exaggerating anything - one of the greatest and most affecting orchestral scores ever written for a movie!!! Everyone who listens to the score, even without having watched the movie at first, will know what I mean! This beautiful album of instrumental tracks I would highly recommend to try for yourself with no need for the DVD at all! The movie is a typical fantasy romance with Mr. Death sneaking in someone else's body and our stereotyped Barbie, who both fall in love with each other, but cannot be together forever, so he breaks her heart, kills her father and then sends back the old inhabitant of this body, and so on... <---this plot must not meet everyones taste or expectations to a 08/15-US-movie-romance! But in the center of focus for now is the score and this one I can only recommend as mostly scores completely drown within the intenseness of a movie; but in this case the movie wouldn't be what it is without those soft violin strives and the sensitive accompaniment of the piano sounds.
To mention a couple of them, I mostly liked the main theme and its variations:

There is nothing else left to say about this, one must make the experience for himself! This is unequivocal a work of art; a so far not reached masterpiece, which captures the whole beauty of the movie marvellous good with its harmonic ecstatic melody. I don't know what other references Thomas Newman has as a composer, but I'm looking forward to listen to some more of his works...something a lot of other people should do as well! You won't regret it! ;)

Disney's animated adventure may be driven by themes of futuristic time traveling, but its musical score is a delightful, pop-driven hybrid that turns on decidedly back-to-the-future sensibilities. Rob Thomas' hook-rich single "Little Wonders" and the All-American Rejects' collaboration with Danny Elfman "The Future Has Arrived" give the collection an immediate contemporary edge. But just as winning are disparate pop performances from Rufus Wainwright (the Nilsson-esque opening gem "Another Believer" and lilting "Motion Waltz"), while nouveau UK crooner Jamie Cullum turns in a swinging, piano jazz take on Wainwright's "Where Is Your Heart At?" as well as an inviting cover of "The Simple Life" in the same vein. Elfman's orchestral score returns him to the vibrant milieu of his early Tim Burton collaborations, supercharged here by a manic energy that seems equal parts Simpsons, Bernard Herrmann and Carl Stalling. Bringing the collection full circle is a big-band cover of Disney's vintage "There's A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" theme performed with loopy big-band charm by They Might Be Giants and the Jonas Brothers more disposable Kim Wilde update, "Kids of the Future." --Jerry McCulley

Elfman Does It Again.......2007-05-07

What can anyone say other than Danny Elfman is like gold when it comes to scoring movies (especially light hearted family fair). Anyone who likes classic Elfman (ie: Beetlejuice, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, etc) will love this score. From start to finish, another great effort.

good mix of score and songs.......2007-04-02

I bought this CD because (1) I'm a big Disney fan and (2) I'm a big Danny Elfman fan. And it didn't really disappoint me on either front.

First, the songs. Rufus Wainwright's "Another Believer" is a great, Beatles-esque ditty that I loved the first time I heard it during the movie. The All-American Rejects' "The Future Has Arrived" is also pretty great. Rob Thomas's "Little Wonders" is another solid song, although in my opinion it doesn't quite fit the movie as well. There are several other songs, but mostly they are unremarkable. The one remaining exception is They Might Be Giants' cover of "There's A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" from the Carousel of Progress. That's a very apprpropriate inclusion; it fits the theme of the movie extremely well, and is also a good tip of the hat to Walt himself.

As for Danny Elfman's score, it's one of the better he's put forth in the past few years. It's very much in the vein of "classic" Elfman (that is, late '80s and early '90s Elfman). If you're a fan of his, you will love it.

Goob's Story.......2007-04-01

-I'm guessing that most of the people that will buy this album will do so for the pop songs and those bunch won't be disappointed. I usually don't listen to that kind of stuff but I did find them very enjoyable even though I don't know any of the bands or singers featured on the album

-On the score side of the album it is the same Elfman charm that we're familiar with. The score does get a little too close to "Corpse Bride" for me to fully love it but it does have it's great moments that are a treat to listen to. It does have that zany and offbeat charm from "Flubber" but thankfully doesn't get too chaotic. The weird little thermalin sounds in "To the Future" did confuse me at first, but after seeing the movie *in 3D I might add* I realized why they were used and now love it.

-For me the best parts of the score are the more peaceful moments which makes "Goob's Story" the highlight on the album for me. It's played in the movie for the scene when the young kid Goob is being told by his older self to be angry and bitter following the events of his baseball game. "A Family United" is also a nice little moment that I wish there could have been more of on the album. I used to think this was the only Elfman score without a title sequence but turns out I was very wrong.

-If you already owe "Corpse Bride" and "Flubber" then there's really no need to get this album, but if you're a die hard Elfman nut like me then you will need to get it just to feel complete. Oh and yes, the songs are also awesome

Ok, so I listened to parts of this cd, and the one song I really really love is The Future Has Arrived, by The All-American Rejects. That song is really cool, and I love listening to it. Tyson Ritter's vocals sound amazing in this (and every other song he sings in )Nick,Mike and Chris also sound great. And I love hearing the backing vocals by Mike and Nick this time, and not just Ty. The purchase is worth it to be able to listen to The Future Has Arrived!

Sometimes recording even a single Beatles cover can be a perilous undertaking. So for the Smithereens to have the impudence to rerecord Meet the Beatles in its entirety (even though some purists don't recognize it as canonical) is like taking the studio to edge of the cliff. But wait! While reaching the Fab Four stratosphere is impossible, this New Jersey pop combo, whose last record was released in 1999, comes about as close as any band could in celebrating the 43rd anniversary of this groundbreaking record. Sure, the lead-vocal fury that Lennon and McCartney created in 1964 can't be restored, and the three-part harmonies are less than hair-raising. But from the opening three chords of "I Want to Hold Your Hand," the Smithereens are respectful to the album's legacy, and let virtually no element slip past them. There's that "1-2-3-4!" countdown to "I Saw Her Standing There," the same virile harmonica in "Little Child," and a doo-wop tang to the ever-underappreciated "This Boy." And when "Not a Second Time" fades out the last of the album's 28 minutes, it leaves you wondering if the boys are bold enough to take a crack at Abbey Road in September 2009. --Scott Holter

Smithereens breathe new life into a classic.......2007-07-04

The Smithereens bring their fantastic sound to this classic and make it brand new again. While it's often hard to improve on an already great classic, The Smithereens use their sound and style to make this a fun CD to listen to all over again. The Beatles inspiration of The Smithereens is never more clear, as these tunes sound as if they written especially for them. This CD is a must for fans of both bands, and a great introduction for the folks that have never heard from either (both of you).

Good, but what's the point?.......2007-06-20

I'm a longtime fan of Smithereens, actually, from the very beginning. One of my favorite bands from the late 80's new wave/alt pop movement. This album is good, but what's the point of it? Replicating the classic "Meet the Beatles" is only a curious concept at best. It's pleasant to listen to, but I'd really prefer a new Smithereens album with original material.

It's all here but the Fab Four.......2007-06-18

I was 10 in 1964 when the Beatles were on Ed Sullivan, and I fell in love with them that night. Mom bought me Meet the Beatles--and I'm sure I played it just as many times as she played her Oklahoma! soundtrack. Finding this offering by the Smithereens brought back a heartful of memories. Nicely done! Bravo!

makes me wonder, "why?".......2007-06-16

I didn't buy this album, but I got to listen to it in its entirety as it played over the loudspeakers in a Borders bookstore I was in. I love the Beatles, and have never heard of the Smithereens. Perhaps this discredits me right away, so take my review with a grain of salt. I admit, one has to appreciate the guts that it takes to cover a whole Beatles album. And from an arrangement point of view, the songs are pretty close to the original. You can tell the Smithereens have a great deal of respect for the Beatles and really want to do them justice.

HOWEVER, I don't think the Beatles are done justice. Every song is transposed down a step or two, which really sucks the life out of many of them. The vocals lag terribly. Now, if this was being performed as a live stage show (which I've heard that it has been), I would absolutely love it. Everything's better live. But this is a recording, and it makes me wonder, "Why did they bother?"

The Smithereens bring nothing new to the songs, instead offering what amounts to a half-hearted mimicry of one of the greatest albums of the 60s. I would recommend avoiding this album and getting the original instead. Perhaps if you like the Smithereens and have never listened to the Beatles, you'll like this album. But once you've heard the original, you'll know there's no comparison. In my opinion, "Meet the Beatles" is simply not done justice. I've heard other Beatle tribute albums and this is one of the more mediocre ones: nothing to write home about.

I find this a half-baked effort that is essentially unnecessary.

Ah, Nostalgia ..........2007-05-13

I first heard this group singing "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" on NPR's Fresh Air (with Terry Gross) -- while I'm old enough to have seen the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, I do not have any of their records. However, this group has all the energy and pizzazz of the Fab Four -- this "cover" of "Meet the Beatles" is a fun, nostalgic "listen".

Wow........2007-01-15

I must say...I was very glad when they released Part Two of the Moulin Rouge soundtrack. Don't get me wrong...the first part was great and all, but it was nothing spectacular. I was specifically looking for certain songs from the movie, and I was completely disappointed when they were on there. The release of a second soundtrack was, in my opinion, an absolute necessecity.

The highlights of the album are:

-Your Song (Instrumental)
-Sparkling Diamonds (original film version)
-Come What May (original film version)
-The Show Must Go On (original film version)

In my opinion, "The Show Must Go On" is the best song on this album...it was just so perfect for the ending of the movie, and I fell in love with the song. I was so disappointed that it wasn't on the first soundtrack. This song is part of what makes the second soundtrack so amazing...the song is fierce!!

If you love the movie and are a fan of the first soundtrack, then definitely, get this one. Many of the songs are versions taken straight from the movie - I recommend this with 4.5 stars...you will NOT be disappointed!

Love this CD.......2006-07-04

I love everything about this movie. The music is amazing and the instrumental songs on this CD are perfect. The first CD seemed to be more for a bunch of teenyboppers that wanted to hear the worst song on the whole CD (Lady Marmalade). If only they could combine the good songs from the first CD into this one.

I gave this 5 stars even though it's about a 4.5 because they split the soundtrack over two seperate cds.

Could it get any better?.......2006-03-02

So i thought that the first instalment in these soundtracks was great (and it was) but the purchase of this sequel is a must if you want the full effect. With the original film versions of these songs, sung by the stars of the movie, you get the real feel that was the magnifisence of Moulin Rouge! Ewan McGregor is still by far the star, with his talent spilling over the dramatic lovesong 'Come What May' and 'Your Song', but Nicole's brilliant performance as Satine definatly takes front and center in 'One Day I'll Fly Away' and the film version of 'Sparkling Diamonds'...I have noticed that many complain about how the first soundtrack did not include the film version of this song...well you need this CD then...you will not be dissapointed. Other highlights include 'Like a Virgin' which is downright histarical, and the dark cover of 'the show must go on' which highlights the tragidy behind this tightly woven tale. THis is one must have soundtrack for your ever growing collection. A perfect companion to soundtrack number 1!

Moulin rouge tried to fill up the GAP.......2006-02-12

This contains many great tracks missing from the original soundtrack, including Like A Virgin, Spectacular Spectacular and The Show Must Go On. I thought the inclusion of two instrumental versions of Your Song might be a bit redundant, but upon listening to them I really enjoyed them and they are quite different from one another. OK, it's not the best soundtrack that could have been put out. But it's pretty darn close. One thing that many DEDICATED fans of the movie (including myself) said is that the original movie soundtrack lacked the actual original movie score. There are 10+ songs in "Moulin Rouge" and many didn't make the final cut.

Baz did the smart thing, taking the audiences favorite music, a few gems from the first soundtrack such as "Come What May" and "Sparkling Diamonds" as well as a few new songs, like "Like a Virgin", "The Show Must Go On" and "The Pitch (Spectacular Spectacular)" and releasing the Original Film versions, allowing for the amazing vocal performances of the actors, including the fabulous Jim Broadbent, to be shine through. Also, released is background music "Meet Me in the Red Room", played during Christian's arrival in the elephant, marking the only non-actor/orchestral piece within the context of the CD.

One thing that this soundtrack included that I didn't expect was several orchestral pieces that were mostly used as background music throughout the film. "Your Song - Instrumental" (#1) has personally become a favorite and is constantly being repeated in the CD player. Also included is the ending credits music "Bolero" and the final piece ... known as "Ascension/Nature Boy". Also included is a remix of "One Day I'll Fly Away", and like all MR remixes, is a little tough to listen to at first but after repeat listening, it becomes music to your ears.

To all you MR diehards out there: this is a must. Not like I could stop you anyways. To others who haven't been introduced to the spectacular (spectacular) world of Moulin Rouge, this is a great introductory piece, especially side-by-side with the first soundtrack.

Everything the other customers are saying is true: more music from the film, thankyouverymuch, not irritating pop conceits like the first. However, I would not have reviewed this album unless I found it absolutely necesary to point out that, in the climactic moments of track 5 "Come What May," Ewan MacGregor's voice is for some reason missing and replaced by a bizarre, operatic man's voice. It truly had me crying with laughter the first few times I heard it, and I wanted to share this wondrous discovery with the world.

The encouragement, hope and reminders that this artist give to the listeners in his songs are outstanding or simply great. The song "Let Go Let God" moves me everytime I hear it. This song has taught me to believe and continue to have faith. I wish I had this in my collection long before now.

Overall A Good CD.......2007-07-03

When I first heard Let Go and Let God on the radio it spoke to me. God knew just what I needed at that moment. I fell in love with it. Last week I got a chance to see Dewayne Woods perform at my church. It was powerful to be in his presence and to hear his testimony. Of course live will always sound better for any artist. But if we can get past the surface and allow the words of the songs to penetrate our hearts we will never be the same. I think Dewayne did a fabulous job for a first cd. I love the song God is as well. I brought the CD and I am encouraging others to do the same. I know the next will only get better.

This disc introduces Yo-Yo Ma's latest and most ambitious adventure, the Silk Road Project. It explores the cultures that flourished along the Silk Road, the ancient trade route that for centuries connected Europe and the East. Founded by Ma in 1998, the project aims to create connections, mutual trust, and cultural interchange between people from different parts of the world through their only shared language: music.

This recording includes music from Mongolia, China, Persia, Japan, Iran, Azerbaijan, and an improvisation on an Italian Renaissance street song, performed by musicians from all those countries, as well as America, on both Eastern and Western instruments. Ma, who participates in every piece either as soloist or part of the ensemble, plays cello and a Mongolian "horse-head fiddle." There is also a Mongolian soprano, who sings a traditional song native to her region. For the uninitiated Western listener, the music requires some getting used to. Much of it is based on rhythmic ostinatos. The melodies use Oriental scales; the intonation is untempered; the music seems all color, texture, and atmosphere, without what might be called themes; and repetition takes the place of development. Contrast is achieved through sudden change, buildup by adding instruments. However, the music is often beautiful, delicate, dreamy, or peaceful; every listener will find his or her own favorite pieces. The playing is splendid, with much inventive improvisation. Inevitably, Ma's tone and personality stand out, but he never dominates in fact or spirit. I was going to give it 2 stars, but then again i only listened to it once.
I was looking forward to this, but the music is plodding in many parts,
like a dreary symphony. There are fine moments, but I was looking for something a bit more accesible, rhymic, and lyrical. This is a mixed bag that seems to miss more often than hit.

A thoroughly enjoyable trip through Central Asia and a few other places........2007-03-15

I have just added this to my musical library and am enjoying it. From the first beat of the first note of Khongozurl's long song you are transported to central Asia - the land of horses and gers. Of all the pieces I was most interested in listening to the second piece - Legend of Herlen. This to me, was the real silk road. The morin khuur has a very rich and unusual tone that made we want to listen to the it over and over again. Each piece is different and reminds one of the many parts that make up the whole of central asia's culture be it music or diesel trucks competing for road space with camels. The music captures the variety that makes up the region. The Finnish Folksong tracks are a nice touch. I have a friend who was at a trade conference and met a man from Mongolia. Neither could talk to one another until they discovered a common language - Finnish! My friend's family is Finnish and his new Mongolian friend had lived for several years in Finland where he learned enough of the language to communicate. Listening to the Finnish Folksongs reminds me of the Finnish-Mongolian connection that my friend had described. It is a nice touch and complements the other pieces very well. Please don't neglect to read the information insert as this gives a wealth of information on the music and it's origins as well as some of the difficulties experienced by western players playing traditional middle Asian musical instruments. Ma's difficulties with his instrument are particularly interesing to read. The concludig track - Desert Capriccio is a very nice ending to a very rich musical experince. The music from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is the perfect ending to this trip through central Asia. I highly recommend this CD to everyone.

Silk Road Journey.......2007-02-19

I saw a performance of the Silk Road Ensemble and was absolutely enthralled. So I bought the CD. But it was a big disappointment. It's not the type of music you can comfortably listen to in your living room - I'm sure it would be much more enjoyable in a concert hall. There was far too much that just sounded like "screeching" to me. However, some of the pieces that were much like what we heard at the performance were beautiful. So - a mixed review, but I disliked more than I liked.

A Detailed Review From A Non-expert Music Lover.......2007-01-12

In this review I will give my opinion on each of the 12 selections in this CD, and will also talk about some general themes related to the title "The Silk Road Project".

To anyone who has heard of the Silk Road in Ancient China, the title of this CD immediately brings up images of exotic peoples and their cultures in your mind. I think Yo-Yo Ma's efforts in creating such a culturally diversified recording are definitely welcomed in this era of globalization.

But after listening through this CD I felt that something was missing from the selections. One of the most important areas on the Silk Road is the Uyghur region in northwestern China. Their music is quite unique. Inclusion of their music in this CD would be really interesting. Also in this CD not all of the selections are chosen from those regions directly related to the Silk Road. So I guess the title is just a metaphor of "when strangers meet", but is not directly about the cultures along the Silk Road.

Now I will review each of the selections.

1. Mongolian Traditional Long Song

I am somewhat familiar with their culture and land. So to me this song is very beautiful and enchanting. One of the most important factors in conducting any cross-cultural communications is context! You really cannot take it out of context. The Mongolian Long Song might sound monotonous and drawling to a person who is more used to the Western tradition of chant, choral, or opera music. Yet if you know the traditional nomadic lifestyle of the Mongolian people on the vast rolling greens of the Mongolian grassland embellished with winding creeks and rivers, you would probably hear such long-singing voices reverberating between the green of the grass and the blue of the sky. The Mongolian people have some of the most beautiful songs that I know of.

2. Legend of Herlen

There are probably two broad categories of non-western ethnic musics. One is the authentic folksong tradition of the people, the other is westernized works composed by westernized local musicians. I guess Legend of Herlen might fall into the second category. It has some interesting tunes in it. But the overall listening experience is too dramatic. I guess the dynamics used in this piece might even go beyond the ppp and fff. In the Mongolian traditional music, dynamics are sometimes used quite dramatically, with sharp difference between two adjacent notes or phrases. So this piece here is probably not very surprising. Nonetheless I find it a little too dramatic, sometimes even disturbing. Again I am not familiar with the background of this piece, so that might explain the unusual drama.

3. Blue Little Flower

I am not sure what fusion should really sound like. But in this piece it does seem to me that a lot of musical traditions are intertwined in it: western music, Chinese folksong from Shaanxi, and probably Iranian or Indian drums. Somehow the only part of this song that I liked is the beginning line. It's very beautiful and delicate, reminding me of the theme music from the Couching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. But it is westernized, not authentic Chinese folksong. If this is still not a problem, then the drum used in this piece does cause a lot of funny effects. The drum sounds so distinctive and it represents some of the central or western Asia cultures. The images such drum beats conjure up are very incompatible with this northwestern Chinese folksong. So in this piece there are at least three threads: western, Chinese, and Iranian/Indian (I am not sure which one). But they do not converge. There is also the funny part of the singing included in this piece. It is out of place and unnecessary. The singing itself is just too frivolous to me.

4. Mido Mountain

I like this piece, especially the part played by the Sheng. Again there are some elements that sound a little bit too foreign to me, especially the percussion part. They use the same percussion/drum in this piece as in the previous one. But the overall effect of the arrangement does sound authentic and pleasant to me.

5. Moon Over Guan Mountains

If you know that Zhao Jiping is famous for his scores for films, you will probably understand this piece better. But of course understanding does not mean you will like it. This piece falls into the second category that I described above. For a lot of non-Western countries, the influence of western music is definitely immense. Many local composers are trained in both the western tradition and the local tradition. But there is probably a general feeling among composers in these countries that western music is richer in theory and methods. Many of these composers will use themes from folk songs to compose westernized music. I will give this piece a B+. It does include some themes from northwestern China, which sound really unique. As I said in this CD there is no selection from the Uyghur region in China, this piece might make up for that, since some of the themes seem to me to be from that region. But this piece is still too dramatic too, like a film score.

6. Five Finnish Folksongs No. 3

I love this one! The theme melody is so beautiful, and maybe a little bit nostalgic, and maybe a little bit romantic also? But this piece is straightly western music. There is nothing ethnic about it.

7. Five Finnish Folksongs No.5

This one is ok, but not very impressive. The overall structure of this piece sounds like very loose. There is not memorable melody either. But it does not have the maddening drama like in the two pieces I have just talked about. This is good.

8. Avaz-e Dashti
I am not familiar with Persian music. But there are indeed some very Persian melodies in this piece. The instruments used in this piece are all traditional Persian instruments. Maybe this is why it sounds so authentic to me. I like the haunting, floating tunes in this piece. They sound very ethereal to me.

9. Habil-Sayagy

Again this piece falls into the second category like the Legend of Herlen and Moon Over Guan Mountains. Such music is probably interesting to the performers, since they can let loose their inner floodgate of emotions and resort to pure artistic connections. But the problem for such music is that they are just too dramatic, and it's really hard to understand them without fairly good knowledge of the context and their unique cultural backgrounds. I am sure all these three pieces might sound profound, meaningful, and artistic once we know the cultural backgrounds better. But for the general listener, they are too abstract and too emotionally charged. Another problem for such western-traditional combination pure art form of music is that tradition might be distorted and represented in the wrong way.

10. Blue as the Turquoise Night of Neyshabur

I like this one better that the previous one, especially the middle part beginning at around 5 min 30 sec into the music. The melody is quite unique, and memorable. The bassline is very interesting too. It conjures up the image of merchants traveling on camel back through the desert. The pulse of the bass sounds like the steps of camels walking. One the instruments used, I am not sure which one, santur or kemancheh, is quite successful in bringing out the authenticity of the music style.

11. Chi passa per'sta strada

This one has the same problem as the Blue Little Flower: it does not sound like anything! It is not Italian, nor is it Iranian, nor Chinese, nor anything else. What is it? Who knows. The ethnicity of world music is tied to their unique musical instruments closely. I remember there was one year the Chinese traditional orchestra had a New Year's Concert at Vienna, and when they played the Radetzky March at the end of the concert, I was quite unimpressed.

12. Desert Capriccio

Tan Dun is similar to the composers I mentioned above like Zhao Jiping. Tan's music is unique and interesting to both western and Chinese audience, because of the same thing: they are both unfamiliar with Tan's music. To the Chinese audience, his music sounds western, but to the Western audience, his music sounds exotic. Nonetheless I still like some of this music, like the Couching Tiger and Hidden Dragon. Some of the melodies are really great. Again this piece makes up for the lack of Uyghur music in this album, since the "desert" in this piece is in the Uyghur region. But the music is not Uyghur at all.

There you have it. That's all for my detailed review of this CD. I would give it a B+ for its efforts and some of the really good tunes. As I am not an expert, I might be wrong in many of the points that I make in this review. So feel free to comment on my review.

Silk Road student.......2007-01-05

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

While some continue to champion the Replacements' Don't Tell a Soul and All Shook Down exit albums, Pleased to Meet Me truly represents the last vital effort of a great band beginning its descent. The first album released after founding lead guitarist Bob Stinson's official departure, Pleased nevertheless retains plenty of the Mats' innate punky drive, albeit here more focused and tempered. Group avatar Paul Westerberg feuded with Memphis producer Jim Dickinson (brought in because of his production of Big Star's melancholy classic Third/Sister Lovers) over what he considered Dickinson's civilizing touches. In retrospect, however, the brass-and-string flourishes on the catchy coda "Can't Hardly Wait" and the more disciplined drumming of Chris Mars make Pleased a more comfortable reconciliation of the group's raw roots and musical maturity. --Steven Stolder

Lovable Imperfection.......2007-06-08

The Replacements are irresistable and their music grows on you with each listen, yet it is hard to explain why. They were ragged, uneven, and not particular skilled musicians who couldn't quite figure out whether they were a punk or rock band who were often awful onstage, never made it big, and fell apart messily. Yet they put it together to produce several heartbreakingly beautiful songs. They were a garage band who did well and left us with a handful of albums that are essential for any partisan of the music of the 1980s. This album was made as the band had begun its implosion, that would drag out for three more years and two more good albums (Don't Tell A Soul, All Shook Down).

This album features "Alex Chilton," which is usually at the top of the favorite song list for most fans of The Replacements. "The Ledge" is an edgy, good song, "Skyway" is an example of Westerberg when he got soulful and acoustic, and "Can't Hardly Wait" is the sort of effortless pop song that The Replacements probably could have made it bigger by doing more of. There are clunkers -- every Replacements record had them -- like "Nightclub Jitters" and "Shooting Dirty Pool," but there are buttons on your CD player that will solve those problems. This band was perfect in their imperfection. Imagine listen to a garage band practicing next door and realizing that they were surprisingly good. That's The Replacements.

A Track by Track Appreciation.......2007-02-24

PLEASED TO MEET ME: A track By Track Appreciation (I haven't listened to it in a while, and this sorta got me thinking wistfully about it. . .)

SIDE ONE (The Good Side)

1) I.O.U. A slamming punk stomper. Sounds like a statement of purpose to prove they can still rock after firing lead axeman Bob Stinson--a move many fans never forgave. Actually, the weakest song on the record.
2) Alex Chilton--perfect ragged power pop paen to alt rock patron saint. ("I never travel far/Without a litte Big Star"). If you were cool, you couldn't escape this song in 87-88.
3) Nightclub Jitters--cool change of pace with this cocktail jazz inflected slow burner
4) I Don't Know--boredom and ennui collide with a stripped to the bones rocker punctuated by Teenage Steve Douglass' sweet baritone sax bleats.
5) The Ledge : tense suicide suicide note where Westerberg's spiraling guitar is as tightly wound as the narrators emotions.

SIDE TWO (The even better side --and yes, like in the old days, a record with distinct sides)

1) Never Mind: Great power popping, heart-on-the-sleeve love song. And it rocks in an endearingly sloppy sorta way.
2) Valentine: more of the the same with great lines thrown out like they come from an endless stream("Well you wish upon a star/That turns into a plane". . . "If you were a pill/I'd take a handful at my will/and knock you back with somethings sweet as wine).
3) Shooting Dirty Pool. Down and dirty rocker--a great illustration of how Jim Dickinson's production is perfect for this record--the bass is muddied, the treble in the guitar is jacked up and the drums are given a huge, sledgehammer whallop. The song itself isn't Westerberg's best, but the sound is great--a wonderful change-of-pace album cut.
4) Red Red Wine (not the Neil Diamond classic but another searing rocker that just sounds balls-out perfect at Max volume).
5) Skyway: Out of nowhere, Westerberg slows down for his most beautiful solo-acoustic ballad. A simple heartstopper, whispered over a delicately picked guitar figure. A million lovesick teenage boys made mix tapes for unattainable girls in the late 80s. This song figured prominently in 94% of them.
6) Can't Hardly Wait: A hopelssly romantic pop-rocker over another bubbling guitar line and a swinging rhythym section. The chorus totally gushes and although some people hate them , I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Memphis Horns on the backing part. A perfect end to what is, to me, a perfect record.

Overall, my favorite mats record. There might be more peaks on Tim (Bastards of Young, Left of the Dial) or Let it Be (I will Dare, Unsatisfied, Answering Machine), but there are also some valleys there as well.

Very Pleased to Meet Paul, Tommy, Bob and Chris.......2007-01-10

It's not Let it Be. Closer to Tim, but certainly a definitive Replacements album in style and arrangement. Excellently produced sound, vocals, sweet solos and well harnessed power. Reminiscent of the best thing that came out of the eighties. This band! I liked it the first time I listened. Loved it by the tenth time. Hard to replace with another artist in your CD player once you're hooked.

A great blend of who-gives-a-$&# attitude and melodies. The band was at their peak here. If you like rock and roll get this. If you don't like it, you're an idiot.

Wicked Back Flip.......2006-06-18

"Wicked Back Flip" is a statement made by Paul on a bootleg when he is stone cold d-runk.

The Replacements. What hasn't been said that I could say? They got me through many deep, dark, hard and lonely nights. I drank with them, smoked with them, cried with them, and survived with them.

This album moved me in a way few have, or ever will. All I can say is thanks for allowing me the privilege of listening to this.
