Thematically, director Robert Altman's career sometimes seems an endless series of left turns into the unexpected; the one constant has been a rich and rewarding attention to the intricacies of character development and interaction. Composer Patrick Doyle underscores Gosford Park's Merchant-Ivory/Agatha Christie/Altman-wit fusion and '30s British upper-class setting with a score that's period spot-on, character-rich, and often sadly evocative. Doyle's restraint is masterful, often leaning on piano, accordion, and small string arrangements that emphasize the characters' intimacies and the film's drawing room settings. Key to the story are a handful of prewar songs by Ivor Novello (who's also a character in the film), ranging from the sprightly humor of "And Her Mother Came Too" and "What a Duke Should Be" to the romantic schmaltz of "I Can Give You the Starlight" and "Why Isn't It You?" The latter is performed here at the piano (and, remarkably, live before the cameras) by Jeremy Northam. Leavened by a small jazz ensemble and a few darkly ominous cues, Doyle's score is an understated gem. --Jerry McCulley

The original music is creative and very listenable. It is typical of popular music of the 1930s. This CD is highly recommended to those people who enjoy music from the 1920s and 1930s.

Better than the movie.......2004-12-08

Many people, I believe, buy a soundtrack because they are mesmerized by the movie and want to extend the experience by listening to something that reminds them of it. But "Gosford Park" is hardly that kind of movie. It is brilliant and atmospheric as it analyzes the British class system, but that's hardly the kind of thing that wins the heart. The soundtrack of this movie was my favorite CD from last year, and the reasons I liked it had nothing to do with the movie.

Why is this music so compelling and winning?

First, it is fun to discover the marvellous talent of Ivor Norvello. His music is half of the charm of the soundtrack. Some songs are funny ("Her mother came too"), some beautiful ("I can give you the starlight") and some poignant ("The land of might have been"). I had not encountered Norvello before this film. Jeremy Northam's perfect delivery of Norvello's songs would not leave me after I'd seen the film. Days later, I found the songs had taken up residence in the back of my head, insisting that I go back to the soundtrack to make them a permanent part of my musical life.

Second, there is the charm of the orchestral music composed by Patrick Doyle. Sometimes people wonder "why aren't they writing beautiful classical music any more?" Well, they are. It goes into soundtracks, however, rather than being commissioned by orchestras. The test for the quality of Doyle's compositions is that you don't need to refer to the film to appreciate this music. It simply charms and intrigues us with its own merits.

My third reason for loving this CD is too personal to mention here.

I give this CD my highest personal recommendation.

Unlike many reviewers here, I didn't buy the CD to hear the Ivor Novello songs or Jeremy Northam's voice. I actually liked the instrumental tracks, and never actually thought I'd like to listen to something played on an accordion.

However, Mr. Doyle's music portrays the lethargy of the snobby Upstairs very well to the contrast of the relative energy of Novello's songs, which the Downstairs servants enjoy, but the Upstairs people can't stand.

My dislikes about the CD include the female singer who can't really sing and the length of the CD. Some of these cues are only about a minute long. WHY pay so much money for such a short CD??? Why not add more music??

Overall though, if you liked either Doyle's music or Novello's songs (hopefully the listener will like both), it's a CD worth getting.

Excellent Mix.......2003-04-23

I fell in love with this soundtrack when I watched Gosford Park in the cinemas.

Sometimes period music, sometimes mystery music, sometime personal music. Jeremy Northam's songs are simply delicious and I love hearing them.

I liken the style (not type) of mix to You've Got Mail.

Heaps of fun and lovely to listen to.

When I saw the movie at the theater I kept thinking I've got to have the soundtrack to this movie because it is so beautiful. I also really enjoyed the sung songs 6.And Her Mother Came Too, 10.I Can Give You The Starlight, 11.What A Duke Should Be, 16. Only For A While, 20. The Way It's Meant To Be, 24. The Land That Might-Have-Been!! I think that Patrick Doyle did a wonderful job of scoring this movie the just fits right in with it all, I only wish there was more to listen to!! I highly recommend this album to everyone who liked the movie and people who love great soundtracks, you will not be sorry if you buy this!!!!

I have been a mint condition fan forever. I own all of their cds. Their latest cd is very good. But I think the first one is the best!! Even though its old school it sounds as if it was made for the present! Please get this cd you'll love it!

AN ALBUM DEFINED BY THREE MAGNIFICENT SONGS.......2006-05-11

Mint Condition's debut release, "Meant To Be Mint" personifies everything that was going on in r&b music in 1991. The annoying brightly-colored clothing (remember Cross Colours? Yes, I admit I had some of their stuff), the eccentric appeal of wearing something different (check out the hats each member is wearing on the cover), and fast r&b dance tracks. Mint Condition's CD could be used as a soundtrack for any of the following movies, due to their similarities: "Livin' Large", "Strictly Business", or "Mo' Money".

Mint Condition played it smart, though. Rather than releasing some of the dance tracks, their introductory single was "Breakin' My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes)", which in my opinion is a classic. Stokley's vocals and lyrics make this song a 10 in my book, and the band's backing makes this a powerful experience. A lot of other people liked the track, too, but after buying the CD, a lot of us wondered whether it should have been named "Meant To Be One-Hit Wonders".

I've always said that r&b artists should make ballads, and stick to them. A singer's voice is best utilized when it's over a slow, sultry backdrop, rather than a synthesizer & a drum machine. Leave the fast stuff to pop and hip-hop is what I say... but do they listen? Noooooo... and does it sound good? Noooooo. MC packs dance tracks into this CD, making it hard to listen to, especially since this is the kind of dance music that was popular in 1991. "True To Thee", "Do U Wanna", "Here We Go Again", and 6 other up-tempo songs really sour the whole experience.

But, there are some other ballads on the album. "Forever In Your Eyes" is not only the second slow jam on the CD, or the second song about "eyes", but also was their second single that they released. With a saxophone opening the song, it's got a little more of a jazzy feel - something that Mint Condition's fans are now used to.

3 tracks later, "Single To Mingle" brings in a nice smooth groove to grind to. The subject matter here is simple: are you available for a date? How someone can make a 4:21 song that's just about asking someone out boggles the mind, but they pull it off here. Once again Stokeley's vocals impress, and the band pulls off a nice job in the background.

Overall, I think that "Meant To Be Mint" is an average CD. If it were just the 3 ballads that I mentioned, it would have received 4 or 5 stars from me, but that wouldn't have been much of an album, would it? My recommendation is to pick up Mint Condition's "The Collection (1991-1998)", which has all 3 of the ballads (although "Single To Mingle" is a live version), as well as some other really good tracks that they've released.

Never received what I ordered.......2005-08-16

I am very dissapointed because I never recived this CD only 1 0f 2 came. I am better off ordering it from the local CD store.

While I like Mint Condition's later albums, nothing can top their first album from 1991! They play their butts off on this album! Breaking My Heart was one of the best live ballads of the first part of the '90s. Against the mostly keyboard and technology driven R&B of that period, this is still a classic. Forever In Your Eyes is another phenomenal ballad. The rest of the album is just as strong, as this album gets funky as well as smoothes out all throughout this effort! They just put out a new album in 2005, so they're still tearing it up today! They kind of gave Tony Toni Tone a run for their money in the musicianship when they each competed for chart dominance in the 90s. They come off all the way live on this album, something that needs to return back to R&B music if another R&B band can get their name and faces out there to the public. Yes I listen to hip-hop, but I definitely like live R&B bands and Mint Condition is continuing that vibe!

Well, since I have this at three stars on this site and it has a five in my heart, there must be reality issues here.

Even though really love this group's sound, there are some major flaws in this album.

I think there is a nice attempt to accomplish some things in their music, but they come up short in key areas.

The two songs I like are "Breakin' My Heart" and "Forever in your Eyes". These are great songs. But the rest of the album lacks feel.

It's like they are two different groups.

Gonna to be a rock star.......2006-06-08

I owned Go for Broke first and this is not a carbon copy. Real talent does not rip off or re-hash existing sounds, riffs, melodies, and such. The variety of the sounds we get on this second album tells me that this guy's got some talent..

First of all this is more a 2k rock album and there seems to be less hip hop. GFB leaned heavily on a hip hop lyric delivery and had a more of a hip-hop theme to it. Kazzer's delivery here has a bit more "in your face" and the guitar riffs feel heaver, more pronounced, and tighter. There are some good guitar solos that are not on his first album.

Kazzer's vocal delivery is also more in line with what we're hearing on the radio today without the sticky sweet commercialism and without the ranting drone.

Most of the tracks are solid rock tunes. The ballads (if you can call them ballads) have a unique grooving quality that keeps them crossing over to cliche'.

You can tell this is a second album on a few of fronts. It's more polished, a bit tighter, certainly more mainstream (or maybe less cross over). If he keeps it up, and has a good promoter, he will no doubt see greater commercial success.

I've been watching the Speed channel's Sports Car Revolution for a few seasons, always loved their theme songs, "Fueled by Adrenaline" and "Pedal to the Metal" but just recently realized that Kazzer was not only a co-host on the show, but he is a rock star. I decided to take a chance on this one and I'm glad I did. Good stuff. So good that I immediatley bought his debut CD "Going for Broke" as well, though I'm slightly dissapointed with that one.

Great jazz quartet.......2007-01-22

The year was 1990 and the quartet featured Joe Lovano on tenor saxophone & alto clarinet, Marc Johnson on bass, Bill Stewart on drums and of course the great man himself on guitar.

I love anything John Scofield does. His guitar sounds much more muted these days; this album is from back when it still used to wail a little. The uptempo tunes are brilliant enough but it's the ballads on this album that get to me; The beautiful "Keep Me In Mind", "The Guinness Spot", "Meant To Be" and "French Flics" are worth the price of the CD all by themselves. But other favourites are "Chariots", "Mr. Coleman To You" (a tribute to Ornette?) and the weird and wonderful "Lost In Space". Scofield writes all songs, naturally.

With great input from all four members of the quartet, this album has a very similar vibe to the 2002 "scolohofo" project which featured Scofield and Lovano alongside Dave Holland and Al Foster, so if you liked that I think you'll like this. (And if you like this of course I think you'll like THAT!)

This is one of my favourite staight-ahead jazz albums by Mr. Scofield. This is what modern Jazz guitar should be. The solos are soulful but I think the most impressive is the quality of the compositions. How can this man be so gifted ? The other musicians are also perfect especially Bill Stewart on drums. If you like modern Jazz you have to buy it.

a wonderful album.......2001-07-13

A heartfelt sort-of homage to Ornette Coleman, this stands as my favorite Scofield album. Don't let the ugly shirt John's wearing on the cover dissuade you; this is indisputably some of his finest stuff. I highly recommend this album to anyone who has never heard Scofield before and is curious to hear what some of his more straight-ahead stuff is like. It's hard to find any ballad that matches the beauty of "the guinness spot" or "keep me in mind".

This CD, along with Time on My Hands and What We Do, is an exceptional showcase for Scofield and Lovano. Johnson and Stewart lay down some of the best rhythm section playing--enhanced by Sco's creative comping--recorded in the 90's. The tunes are beautiful and inventive throughout, the solos are out of this world (particularly on Go Blow and Big Fan--I still can't figure out how they come in on the out-head after Lovano's solo), and the ensemble telepathy is undeniable.

BUY IT NOW! Then buy What We Do and Time On My Hands.

More 'Time On My Hands'.......1999-12-31

`Meant To Be' finds John Scofield in the middle of his early `90's bop phase, coming on the heels of his most excellent `Time On My Hands' record. With a peaking Joe Lovano returning as reedman and Charlie Haden and Jack deJohnette replaced by Marc Johnson and Bill Stewart, Scofield again surrounds himself with top-notch talent.

Sco's own guitar playing, as usual, is flawless, even in hairy spots like `Big Fan'. For those who don't think that Bill Stewart can hang with deJohnette on the skins, go listen to `Go Blow', as an example. For his part, Marc Johnson doesn't stretch out like Haden did in `Time', but the Bill Evans alumnus minds the store just fine, thank you very much.

The only aspect of this record that causes it to fall just short of its predecessor is that the compositions, all originals, are not uniformly great; about 4 or 5 are just merely good. But don't even think to scratch this cd off your shopping list; `Meant To Be' is a solid second helping.

Great Little Quiet Album.......2007-02-02

What a wonderful surprise this CD is. It's very low-key, with simple arrangements. Very organic.
This is a CD that highlights the songs. Jenna Mammina, who is a good singer, doesn't overwhelm the songs. Instead, she lets the songs say what they were intended to say with no overt interruption from the singer or the band.
The song "A Love That Lasts" has absolutely blown me away. Such melancholy, such hope - all rolled into one. And Jenna's voice on this song underscores both of those sentiments beautifully.
Enjoy this CD. I wish all "American Idol" contestants would listen to this CD; they might, then, learn what real singing is really all about.

Linda Davis has a talent that should not go unnoticed. She has a wonderful voice. She does an amazing job with the songs she performs. This is a solid country album. I highly recommend this album to everyone. She has a God-given talent and knows how to use it.

Solid Country CD.......2006-02-01

Like most of the reviews for Linda all state she is underrated, which is so true! I think what has hurt Linda is that her wonderful voice sounds alittle close to Reba's, that's why Linda has been a great background vocalist for Reba.

'Some Things Are Meant To Be' is a solid country cd, wonderful vocals from Linda and strong material, 'Walk Away', 'She Doesn't Ask' are touching ballads.. and you have to BRAVE to record a Gladys Knight classic! Linda's version of 'Neither One Of Us' is beautiful. And this cd features another Linda & Reba duet 'If I Could Live Your Life' which should've been a hit.

Underrated performer.......2004-06-02

Linda Davis made it big in the early 90s with her duet with Reba McEntire titled "Does He Love You". It won her a Grammy, but she had no other big hits, except for the title track of this album which was a top 10 hit. She shuffled around from label to label, now she just released a new album called I HAVE ARRIVED which you can only get from her website.

This 1996 album shows a lot of growth and promise in Linda. The title track is a smooth midtempo ballad that has a great hook. Linda's voice is so pure and she knows how to emote well. "Love Story In The Making" is a nice uptempo song that works well with her voice. I really like the song "Always Will", there's a certain quality to it, her voice combined with the powerful lyrics. "What Do I Know" is another great song, an excellent ballad. There's also another duet with Reba on this one, this time called "If I Could Live Your Life". They also did one on Reba's 1998 album IF YOU SEE HIM which is the best one in my opinion, it's called "Face To Face".

Overall, she doesn't get nearly enough attention as she deserves, she has a great voice and this CD is evidence of her talent. Also check out I'M YOURS.

Underrated Talent.......2001-05-03

Linda Davis has one of the most beautiful voices in country music. She started making it big by performing on tour with Reba, as her background singer. Some Things Are Meant To Be is a great album filled with some great material. The title track is a beautiful love song that a lot of romantics will love. Love Story In The Making is a great love song as well. Always Will is a bluesy type song that could of been a hit if released. The surprise is the duet with Reba McEntire, titled If I Could Live Your Life. This is an underrated singer who deserves a listen, give her a try you will fall in love with Linda Davis' music. I also suggest you try her Im Yours album.

A Great Debut Album From Linda........2001-04-04

Go Back To 1993 When We First Heard This Lady Sanged With Reba McEntire On The # 1 Grammy And CMA Award Winning "Does He Love You." Then In Early 1996, The Title Track To This Album Hit Radio Airwaves Across America And It Became A Top Ten Hit. A Few Other Great Songs Are On Here, Too. Including Another Duet With Reba McEntire The Reigning Queen Of Country Today.

This album seems to have been over looked, it has some killer slow james, Cross your heart & I got the love beeing the best, these two tracks are worth the price of the album, I've had this album for some time but I still play this album all the time.

one of my favorite cds... peel me a grape is a great one, nancy a lil older but her voice is superb.. love it... listen to the samples... ramsey lewis does some songs on here too.. mostly instrumental cd, but great buy.. i only got it because nancy was on it..lol..

I wanted to hear more songs by Nancy Wilson. I thought they would all be duets.

Words fall short of what Ramsey and Nancy did on this CD. It was so much better than 1984's "The Two of Us". 1984's compilation was strictly dominated by the record company (false instrumentation) indicative of that era.

I will not write out a long review, simply because the music that these two great performers made in the studio speaks for itself. The previous reviewer felt it necessary to make very negative comments in reference to this cd. I would say to him every one is entitled to there own opinion. However if you do not like it, DON'T LISTEN!!

Nancy sings a bunch of second singer junk........2002-09-17

Nancy tries to do Cleo Laine's "Peel Me A Grape" with dismal disappointment.Nancy has second sung songs from soup to nuts; this pieces fish can't swim out of too much of anything anymore.The "Blues,Ballads & Big Bands" tripple CD is a musical treat where she just happened to copy Sarah Vaughan, McRae & anybody good. At this time Nancy didn't throw her voice like a bar room brawl singer.On the Anthology bouble CD there are a number of good cuts the first 5 cuts disk l & most all cuts 2nd CD."When Did You Leave Heaven" was one of her few original hits but when Nancy performs it live on "The Essence of NW" she again throws her voice like a bar room brawl singer and doesn't know how to pretend to do the original way she recorded it.I heard she was going to retire.Her stuff with Columbia went nowhere. It's about time for her to retire instead of throwing garbage out there because of the name + Ramsey Lewis just to grab your money.Never heard anything like the RL "Sun Goddess"on this.Would be good if Ramsey would do a remake of with Nancy doing disco lyrics & Nancy would do it for a couple of bucks maybe a ok to throw your money in on.I recomend "Yesterday's Love Songs;Todays Blues,Welcome To My Love,Ballads,Blues& Big Bands" the tripple CD if you look on the internet you can get this yet new.On earlier recording she had beautiful arrangers & backings and sang very artfully.On the notes "Yesterday's Love Songs" Nancy comments that she didn't know how to sing back then & she could have done more with it but is the reverse that she did know how to sing then better than now and because of the material,backing,& voice structure it just happens to be her number one selling CD.A number of things on Essence of NW are good.Nancy's"Don't Misunderstand"Carmen can't hold a candle to it & that jazz version of the country western song "I've Never Been To Me" is absolutley untouchable.I attended a live night club performance of Nancy Wilson in 78 in the Blue Room In New Orleans in which Nancy was absolutely phenomenal with her small orchestra singing "All Is Fair In Love, the flagrant & breathtaking"I've Never Been To Me"& others.I obtained an autographed album of her's. I had some of her friends take it to Nancy to sign.Nancy depends on the public for her reputation but she won't let you meet her.From all accounts Nancy is very caustic & bitter to the public even being kown to cuss at you if you get in her way.The 77 album I'VE NEVER BEEN TO ME side 1 is a masterpiece of 5 rollercoaster recordings the 2nd side not too good. She also did a Jazzy version of "If I Were Your Woman"which is priceless which never got reprinted.To date Nancy Wilson is the largest selling on Capital besides The Beatles.Nancy seemed to be the top remake artist & know how to put jazz,blues,rock & pop in a perfect sembelence of order on album.Nancy had a very tasteful way of performing jazz & blues with tremendous orchestras copying CM,SV & top artists.The days of remakes had gone out(for a wile);she had made quite a number of albums with throwing her voice & then she started singing originals(unheard of in her new style).Wilson followers continued to follow her & said what the fxxx it's not jazz or even good(+ we have never heard it).Of Nancy's some 36 Captials 5 or 6 ending albums were no good;traditional followers couldn't follow her & the young people had never heard of her.Her last album TAKE MY lOVE was a complete disaster on Capital & she was simpley fired from Capital.Nancy is definitely a time piece in recording depending what one listens to. Nancy try making an album of standards some remakes of your old ones & lot of new ones you've never done with fantastic backing (an orchestra), a top notch arranger & adapt your voice to a combination of phonic, lyrical phrasing,singing & some of your emotional, soul searhing phrasing, chanting , shouting; in other words go back to your basics that made you a success.Nancy please try learnig to combine the traditional old way & some of new way you that you have sung;but not all all one way.Go back to standard & retisent material. I know it will work.If you are retiring go back and do a jazz vocal masterpiece for your last recoring.You are one of the few living jazz legends that could ever pull this off.

I'm happy that these two jazz legends got together to record such a magnificent CD.

In the case of Ms. Wilson, it's a treat to hear her backed by a superb trio (of the acoustic kind - no electronic gizmos). Her song selection, from the witty "Peel Me a Grape" to Brenda Russell's "Piano in the Dark" hits the mark perfectly. Ditto for the instrumental offerings from Ramsey and his trio.

I must comment on one of the tracks, "Did I Ever Really Live?" (Albert Hague and Allan Sherman, composers), which I'm sure had to be thought of carefully in light of the horrific events of 9/11...in the liner notes, Ms. Wilson explains that the song was among those scheduled to be recorded on that day, but was not due to the tragedy that unfolded.

Todd Durrant, of A Different Drum, has once again put together a really cool compilation. This double CD focuses on the songs a dj might play after the crowds have thinned and only the most dedicated "shadow dance" to the beats. Included is a fresh mix of slammin' club tracks as well as some melodic slower tunes. There should be something here to please everyone, from fans of synth-pop, to goth, to darkwave. With 21 tracks, it's a bargain. It's also a good way to discover new bands.
