Solid,Passionate work from THE Singer.......2007-07-08

Love Letters demonstrates Elvis'undeniable love for music.He didn't just sing a song...he gave it energy,he let it breathe.This is clearly on display in the way he sings on Heart of Rome.When I'm Over You is another opportunity for him to grab hold of the music and make it his own.I'll Never Know and This is Our Dance are two seldom heard songs which makes this a must have for any fan.Got My Mojo Working and Cindy,Cindy allows Elvis to show-off...and he does.His ability to sing R&B still goes unnoticed except by us fans.The title track was the second time he did this song.the first was in the mid-60s.I like this version best for his voice had matured by the early 70s.This was one of many albums from his historic Nashville marathon recording sessions.A great and fun CD to have.

Ok but not great.......2007-06-24

This is an ok album; not particularly strong, but not bad. It was released in 1971 and peaked at 33 on the US album chart and 12 on the country album chart. It did better in the UK reaching 7 on the album chart. The title track, "Love Letters" was originally released as a single in 1966 and was a top 20 hit in the US and top ten in the UK. The song "Life" was a minor hit in 1971 reaching 53 on the US singles chart and 34 on the Adult Contemporary chart. It's flip side "Only Believe" was a top ten country hit. It has a couple of up-tempo tunes on it that are pretty good, "Got My Mojo Working" and "Cindy, Cindy".

Carlene Rocks.......2007-06-12

Little Love Letters is a great country/rock album. It's marked throughout by high energy. There are strong drums throughout the album. Carlene puts a lot into the vocals. There's no fill on this album; it's solid good songs. These are just the really good songs:

Every Little Thing - very high energy, makes listening want to jump around

Wastin Time with You - energetic, with good drums and a kind of 50s-rock-like instrumentation

Unbreakable Heart - good ballad, well sung by Carlene in a gentle voice

Sweet Meant to Be - an awesome song, one of my favs in any genre. Great soprano voice by Carlene. About a love that was "meant to be"

Nowhere Train - kinda has the rhythm of a train going across country. Nice effect

I Love You Cause I Want To - another one with 50s rock style to it. Very assertive, forward vocals about singer going for what she wants

Hallelujah in My Heart - jubilant attitude

Heart is Right - this tune just really moves along, irresistable

Great album by Carlene. It's too bad that she has since run into hard times from what I hear. Well, she made this album and that's a lot more than most of us will ever accomplish musically.

Country Rock rollercoaster that never gets old........2006-01-26

This is the best country rock recording I've ever heard.

The first Carlene Carter album I ever owned was Musical Shapes. I thought nothing could be better than that in the world of country rock. I went and bought up most all her other recordings to see if she ever did anything else like that great "country punk" album from the 80's. This was the gold nugget of the lot (although all her stuff is enjoyable to me).

Some recordings sound like projects that the musicians work hard at and are glad when they're over, and some recordings sound like everyone is having fun. This is the latter.

If you are a Carlene Carter fan at all and you don't own this album, you should. If you own this and don't own Musical Shapes, then by all means get that one too. And, if you've heard of Carlene Carter and you're wondering which one of her discs to buy first, this is it!

Absolutely Timeless.......2005-05-15

I had the good fortune of making several personal travel arrangements for Carlene when she was on the Giant lable and I was living in Nashville. You felt like one of her best friends by the end of the call. She even gave me an album credit. I grew up listening to music from sunup to sundown. My mother would play a radio every night as she put me to bed. There are very few music styles that can say I don't like. I was around always Country Music, but was a little more Rock & Roll. I honestly think I would have loved as much then as I do now. It's timeless and I grow to like it the more and more everytime it's played. It's amazing to me how she combined all the music styles and made it what I consider as one of the best albums of any style in the 1990's.
I seriously feel if they were to release it again it would outsell the original release. Out of all the songs that have been mentioned in previous reviews I didn't notice any of them to have included "Hallelujah In My Heart". To me this is the song that is the "secret gem" of the CD. Bluegrass, Country and a just a enough of pop to invite you to gather round, join in and sing along.
I think of her more often lately and wish there were a way I could help her through her recent struggles, but I haven't spoken to her since I moved eight years ago. Carlene, if you should ever read this, I want to say I know you're gonna come through this.

A piece of childhood.......2004-12-06

This was the first country album I ever owned (at age 9), and I remember I just about wore out the cassette. I don't remember all of the songs, but I particularly remember Unbreakable Heart, Sweet Meant to Be, Nowhere Train, Long Hard Fall and, most of all, Every Little Thing as being my favorites. Even as young as I was, I knew this much: The girl had talent. She deserved to be known so much better than she was back then. As for the music, eleven years later I still give it 5 stars. Now thats how much a masterpiece like this sticks in my memory.

masterful fusion of country, rock and pop.......2001-11-16

Little Love Letters provides a masterful blend of the country and rock influences Carter is well-known for along with an amazing pop sensibility. In terms of melody, harmony, energy, and heartfelt lyrics, this album is a winner. Also, it is the type of album that can really grow on you over time, as you better understand and connect with the soulful expression that Carlene Carter, Howie Epstein, Benmont Tench, and others bring to this beautiful work. Of many outstanding tracks, especially noteworthy is "World of Miracles," which includes the extraordinary lines "Anything is possible in this world of miracles / We can move mountains in this world of miracles" (resembling Matthew 17:20). As a whole, Little Love Letters sees a full range of happiness and sorrow, but in the end, it sees Love, Faith, and Hope triumph.

I think you will find the version in the soundtrack "Blue Velvet" to be the original, at least run time is correct, but have not listened to it...

original run time is 2:36 or 2:37 and not 2:41 for the Love Letters cd

ditto for a Time Life compilation 2 LP box set titled "The 60's - Rave On", which I do own... run time was 2:37 on this lp

you should also get the correct version by getting the 7" 45 vinyl that is still available...

original 1962 7" from ERA say 2:27, I don't think this is correct, on ebay I saw the image of 7" label with a radio station logo stamp on it that someone had penciled in 2:36

I think the previous reviewer got hold of the 20 minute cd of the score that was sent to academy members for consideration of an oscar - not the complete soundtrack with tracks as listed here.

I loved the music in the movie...the soundtrack did not include all the upbeat music, just 20 minutes of the dreamy tune of the funeral/tai chi scenes. Very disappointing!

Despite racking up Tony nominations and/or box-office success with Nine, Grand Hotel, and Titanic, Maury Yeston remains a relatively unknown Broadway auteur. And yet, what a fabulous songwriter he is. Listen to "Home," for instance: This excerpt from Phantom (the other adaptation of Phantom of the Opera) has great melodic hooks, along with natural sweep and unrestrained emotion. Like every song on this CD, it also has such dramatic drive that it easily stands on its own outside of its regular narrative frame. This collection of new recordings provides an excellent overview of Yeston's talent, juxtaposing numbers from his three best-known scores (though there's only one from Titanic) with rarities and a generous selection from his 1991 song cycle December Songs. What!? How is this possible?.......2007-01-20

How could one put together a Maury Yeston Songbook cd without a track from Andrea Marcovicci? He wrote a song cycle for her. Granted there are some great singers here but a grave oversight to not include Ms Marcovicci.

Beauty and grace, charm and wit - Maury's got it all.......2006-11-14

Maury Yeston may be musical theatre's unsung genius to the public at large, but I've heard his praises sung many times. A friend convinced me to buy the original Broadway cast of "Nine", and while there were some fantastic songs and an undeniable melodic gift throughout, it left me lukewarm. The same with "Grand Hotel". And I couldn't stand "Titanic" - too big, too self-important, too reliant on booming low brass and bombastic orchestral swells.

"Phantom" was the only one of his scores that touched something other than distanced admiration in me. It was everything Sir Lloyd Webber's popera travesty could never quite aspire to - epic yet human, beautiful and touching, with songs that showed actual details and emotions. So it was with that in mind that I purchased this, figuring that maybe Maury could prove me wrong, shorn from the restrictions of a book musical format.

And by God, did he prove me right and then some.

Maybe it's the singers. Maybe it's the perfect orchestrations. Maybe it's just the absence of a plot to follow. More than likely, it's all three, but this is one of the most gorgeous, enjoyable, heartbreaking albums I've ever purchased. Yeston has assembled an impressive cast to give voice to his music - such heavy Broadway hitters as Alice Ripley, Brent Barrett, Betty Buckley, Christine Ebersole and Howard McGillin mix with up-and-comers like Eden Espinosa, Sutton Foster, and Brian d'Arcy James. But the most impressive turns are given by people I'd never heard of before - Johnny Rodgers (who?) has a voice spun from gold, and he's absolutely perfect in "Danglin'", a simple and powerful song despite some odd lyric choices by Yeston. Likewise Philip Chaffin in "My True Love" and "I Am Longing", and Michael Holland displays a warm and untrained performance of "Another Day in the Modern World". These three men, who I'd never heard of before, absolutely stole the show. It doesn't hurt that they're given some of the best songs from the album.

Of course, the rest of the ensemble uniformly turns in worthwhile performances. The professionalism of Broadway is gloriously evident here, each singer making their song uniquely theirs. Brent Barrett made me hear "Only With You" as if for the first time. Betty Buckley is surprisingly vulnerable in "I Had A Dream About You". Alice Ripley is her usual bundle of raw emotion in "Please Let's Not Even Say Hello", and turns in a rare comic performance in "Call From The Vatican" to great effect (listen to that surprise high note near the end! Wow, Alice!). Christine Ebersole is heartbroken, elated, vulnerable, and tough all in the course of "Grandmother's Love Letters"' 4 minutes.

There are some weak spots - Eden Espinosa is mostly one-note during her song, and while it's certainly a high note, it's nothing you haven't heard her do better elsewhere. Laura Benanti's "Now and Then" goes by without much notice, which is a shame for this talented actress. And Betty Buckley goes back to her usual high-volume stridence in "Be On Your Own", which despite its chilling music deserves a more nuanced performance than Buckley gives here. But these songs would be standouts on any other album, and it's only the company they keep that prevent them from being excellent.

Oh, and "Unusual Way", possibly Yeston's best-known song, is so beautifully performed here by Brian d'Arcy James and a three-piece band that I nearly cried hearing it. And that's quite a feat for a song that I swore never to listen to again after the seventeenth girl in a day auditioned with it (badly). But the gender swap works perfectly, and d'Arcy James' golden Irish tenor swings through the music effortlessly.

As for the band - there are no missteps here. Each song is given exactly what it needs, from the Romantic-with-a-capital-R string section on "Home", to the jazzy saxophone on "Letter From the Vatican", to "Be On Your Own", which is given a Herrmann-esque string section. Some particular touches stand out - that lovely acoustic guitar on "Danglin'", the simple piano line on "Modern World", and the sublime cello/piano outro in "Unusual Way" really stuck with me after the album stopped playing. And the recording is without fault - crisp, encompassing, personable and expansive as the mood requires. The whole album sounds fantastic.

There is such a wide range of style and substance here that each song would deserve purchasing individually. As a collection? It's bliss. If you're a fan of theater music, appreciate great vocals, or just need something to keep you company on long nights, this is required purchase.

A perfect marriage of music and lyrics.......2006-09-07

I think Yeston must be the most underrated talent in music theatre. And not just music theatre ... for as far as I know, "Danglin'" is not from a show - a jewel of a song ... and a disarmingly honest rendition from Johnny Rogers (what a beautiful voice! Why hasn't he made more CD's?) Some other favourites are "New Words" (not enough parent-child love songs out there ... and I can't imagine it could be sung any better than this), "You're there too" (with a charming and unexpected twist), "Simple" (Callaway is superb), "Only With You" (loveable rogue!) ... to name but a few. Inspired music theatre writing. A must for any musical buff, composer or singer seeking repertoire that will help them stand out from the crowd.

The Maury Yeston Songbook.......2006-08-30

A good album sung by good singers. I have been an admirer of Maury Yeston for a number of years . I am a great fan of "Nine"
which I consider his best work.(If possible try to listen to the
Australian Cast Recording with John Diedrich) I enjoy listening to artists like Alice Ripley, Brent Barrett, Sutton Foster,and my very favourite singer Liz Callaway. All in all a great CD to just sit back ,relax and enjoy Les Breen

One of the best broadway/composer compilations ever made!.......2006-06-29

There are so many brilliant performances on this CD that I don't even know where to begin. From start to finish, this CD sweeps you away on a rollercoaster of emotions. Now, this CD isn't perfect by any means; a few of the artists are performing songs that aren't really suited to their abilities, but the heart is there and that's really all that matters in the end.

If you love Broadway, if you love GOOD music in general, and you want to be moved by songs rather than merely entertained, you must get this CD.

I am very happy that EMI/Liberty decided to release two more of Julie's LPs on CD. However, the sound quality is far from digitally remastered. Any other compilation which has been distributed has managed to make her recordings sound magnificent.

The first LP, "Love Letters," has a few good tunes, though. Covers of two Rosemary Clooney's songs: an intimate interpretation of 'Hey There,' and an overly sensual and suggestively-metaphored 'Come on-a My House,' which was not displayed (figureatively-speaking) in the original take of the song. It was drol, and utterly campy; London turns into a song actually worth coming to understand. My other favorite is the well-known 'Never on Sunday.' The track is a rarity, but avid London fans know of its existance and wonderfully-vocalized phrasing. One reviewer - before I - said London should have never sung the song. Hmm ...interesting perception. Do you suppose maybe that's because she is so suggestive she actually makes you think she 'is' a prositute, and when they 'were' worth the time of your lonesome night? Go figure....

Now ..."Feeling Good" has to be one of the best records Julie ever recorded. It's upbeat, very vegasish, and the type of music both teenagers and adults of the late sixties could identify with. Her take of 'Girl Talk,' makes you think of pubresent and also grown women sitting 'round in a bedroom or outside chatting up gossip. Purely enjoyable song, with an awesome arrangement by Neal Hefti. London turns up the smoke with a rendition of Roger Miller's country-tuned 'King of the Road.' It is so uplifting, it's sure to make everybody dance. Another song from this album, 'Watermelon Man,' has long-been associated with Julie's repeatoire, and is one of the record's stand-out tracks. However, a song that deserves honorable mention is a very rare, and unknown gem 'I Bruise Easily.' Displaying a girl's fun at taunting and holding her man at bay, she calls the shots, and plays hard-to-get; advising her sweetheart to go soft, but WAIT ...not too fast, now! You might bruise her. Perfect song.

More disrespect to customers from EMI.......2005-09-24

While I do like Julie London's voice and performance (although she really should NOT sing "Never On Sunday" ever again), I must bash EMI's complete and utter disrespect towards the customers. This disc is NOT an Audio CD, but, instead, it is a modified disc with "copy protection". Not that Macrovision's lock (which is basically just a way to swindle extra money from the unsuspecting clients, who think they're buying a CD) is offering any "copy protection". Anyone can rip it to their heart's content. But the original is unlistenable on car CD players and on a great deal of home CD and DVD players. Until EMI's bean counters stop their questionable - at best - tactics and until Amazon.com lists this album CORRECTLY as a COPY-PROTECTED product, AVOID IT LIKE THE PLAGUE.

Furthermore, the track listing contains many errors: "Love Letters" is listed as "I Love You Porgy", "The Second Time Around" is listed as "And That Reminds Me" and so forth. So, not only are a great many legitimate buyers deprived of the possibility to play the disc on their home Hi-Fi's (although the "lock" cannot prevent the ripping of this disc into whatever format you may wish), but also they are made to guess what they are listening to.

Caveat emptor.

If you love Tudor court music, this is THE CD. I bought mine 13 years ago. A friend heard it and liked it, so I thought I'd see if it was still in print. It will make a sweet gift.

Henry VIII, unfortunately, is often perceived as a bloated, irascible boor, with the table manners of starved dog. Overlooked is the athletic and refined young Henry, the idealistic romantic. These songs pay tribute to king as courtier, composer and musician, ranging from instrumentals to sighing expressions of courtly love. Of particular note are the Boleyn love letters, which curiously ended up in the Vatican. Unfortunately, none of the Queen's letters to her husband survive (the authenticity of the 'Tower' letter is in doubt).

Rather than performing "Chapel Royal" music, this CD focusses on Henry's own works, which show surprising talent. He sang countertenor (odd for such an imposing figure), and played flute, viol, virginal, and lute; no wonder he found Anne Boleyn, herself an accomplished musician and composer, a perfect counterpart. Some selections are Henry's adaptations of contemporary works, but most are original: one can imagine the couple performing and laughing together on intimate evenings.

The love letters are fascinating. As in the vocals, pronunciation approximates sixteenth century English. Notwithstanding the German accent, I still noticed some small flaws: the 'r's are not fully rolled on the tongue, nor are vowels consistently emphasized (early modern English was more phonetic than modern). I also noted unusual French pronunciations, although I suspect the differences were more obvious than is apparent here. Small quibble -- at least it's not modern!

This is a fascinating CD, both in terms of listening pleasure and historical interest.

This is a very good selection of the music of the Tudor king, Henry VIII. The Isaak Ensemble, a German group that specializes in music of the Renaissance, has done a fabulous job of bringing the music of King Henry VIII to light. Renaissance music has a sound that is all its own, much unlike Baroque or Classical music, and deserves to be heard. This CD also contains the love letters of Henry VIII to his wife, Anne Boleyn, spoken aloud in the original Renaissance English or French. The speaker has a heavy German accent that may or may not distract, but in the end it does not matter as the material matters more then the speaking style.
