The proficiency of the musicians of Accademia Amiata Ensamble--the high level performances and the exceptional programs with compositions by Olivier Messiaen, BÃ©la BartÃ³k, Thomas Fortmann, Astor Piazolla, and more--have always evoked great enthusiasm among audience and critics. Selecting works from different creative phases, the ensemble not only gives a technically brilliant performance, but also aims to express the spirit of the composers. The essence of Strictly Off Limits is Thomas Fortmann's "Sherry at Songkran," a disguised rock song which actually hides a completely serial composition.

Not very adventurous but still quite interesting.......2007-02-07

The track list is half and half Zappa and Tommy Fortmann compositions. I like Fortmann's pieces but they don't grab me as much as Zappa's work. All I can say is that they are of a similar genre to Zappa's compositions and Zappa's influence is unmistakable. The Zappa pieces are very well performed. To give you an idea of the overall sound of the album, try to imagine the combination of bass, drums, piano, sax and violin. That may call to mind King Crimson, but it is largely an unplugged sound with electric bass and the violinist uses some effects processing, so the feel is pretty much that of a small modern classical ensemble with a beat.

Their version of Peaches has a reprise of the first section of the solo immediately before the second arpeggio section and I'm not sure if it works or not but this is pretty much the only place they stray from standard arrangements of the Zappa pieces covered. Unlike most other cover versions I've heard these are mostly pretty literal so it's the sound of the ensemble itself that makes it unique. For example, I've heard a few covers of Aybe Sea and most wander off the version on Burnt Weeny Sandwich from the point where the outtro highlighting the piano and classical guitar begins but Fortman has even transcribed this section note for note. It doesn't come off as well as the original and they might have been better off improvising their own outtro, one more suitable for their mix of instruments. On the other hand, Little Umbrellas and Regyptian Strut come off quite nicely.

The quality of the performances themselves is five star, but overall, considering the impact this album has had on me, I rate it at three and a half stars. I have definite favourites and they are on my iPod as part of a certain playlist and they are worth the purchase price.

Un-freaking-believable.......2002-12-11

This mix will blow you away with its simultaneous combination of smoothness and raw funk power. We start out slowly, with just a kick and some bass and some props to all the DJs who keep pumpin up the stuff - there is absolutely no clue as to what is coming. Then we roll slowly into Shazz's "El Camino" and then a couple of smooth vocal tracks, including the well-known "Sweeter Love" by Blue 6. Standard stuff, you might think, and well mixed - and that would be good enough. But no.

When Robin Jones's "Royal Conga" drops in, things start to heat up - REALLY heat up - and they never settle down from there. It's nothing but straight up - energy, funk, groove, attitude, syncopated and broken beats, soaring vocal heights, SICK sample manipulation, digital afro-heaven. If you're not on anything, it will certainly feel like it. By the time you've ridden out Blaze, the Sunday Bunch, 4 Hero, and Urban Species's pounding grooves, and Soul Dhamma's "Flower" has put goose bumps all over your body and filled your head with light, you'll be able to do nothing but smile as Azymuth's ultra-sophisticated "Amazon Adventure" slides in sideways to bring things down to Earth. Your thinking WILL be rearranged. And you'll be looking to get your hands on ANYTHING by Dixon for the months to come. Yes, it's one of THOSE mixes.

Origional and Creative.......2002-08-22

Being a DJ myself, it's rare that I bother purchasing a mixed compilation... However, unlike most of the CDs that exist in the vast ocean of DJ mixed compilations, this one has some originality and creativity to it that make it stand out. The tracks are rare, the mixing is exceptional, and the production is above average. I'd recommend it. Good mood music to put on at a cocktail lounge or at an intimate social gathering.

i liked dixon's last off limits compilation very much - he's got a lot of guts to mix such diverse styles. this, on the other hand, is garbage. puts together lots of clicking, beeping slow techno tracks that is soulless and similar throughout. not a good effort at all.

picked this one up - and unlike a lot of compilations, I'm still listening to it 6 months on.

Nice variation from latin to house

I have a bias to be Pro BlueSix - so I very much like their track 'Pure' - risky & raw vocals towards the end of that track that brings my mindset deeper into the groove.

Nice Chill Mix.......2001-03-12

Most tracks are either Vienna/German style electronic jazz with the likes of Beanfield/Compost Records, but there are some mellower tracks like those on a French mix like Costes. There is some deep house like Blue Six but it's only for the high points. There is some dreamy electric lounge and a laid back Steely Dan-like song by Georg Levin at the end that transports you to a late night basement lounge. Some of the other artists here since they weren't listed when I wrote this: Phoojun, I:Cube, Eternal, Truby Trio,Neon Phusion Feat.Sylvia Tella (Electric Lady), Lisa Shaw...It's better than average but in a genre where there are so many mixes and complillations out right now--get this if you want something unique but just as good as the best sellers (Naked Music, K&D, OM Lounge) or if you want to get to know some new artists in this area.
