Maroons borrow from two of Quannum's best-known groups, pairing Blackalicious producer Chief Xcel with Latyrx's chatterbox Lateef. Though the two have worked together many times before, the focused collaboration on this nine-song effort helps to reinforce each artist's strength. Compared to the more mellow beats that Xcel often concocts for Blackalicious, the production on Ambush is more energetic, even aggressive at times. You hear that most explosively on the funk bomb "Lester Hayes," but even the slick, disco-flavored "Don't Stop" benefits from this more vigorous approach. Likewise, Lateef's mercurial sing-song flow gets a thorough workout, swinging a more seductive lilt on "Beautiful You" while hitting a brisk pace for "Best of Me" (which also features Xcel's Blackalicious partner Gift of Gab). Though clocking in at less than 40 minutes, this offering is still more than a sufficient tease of what new experiments Quannum might produce down the road. --Oliver Wang
Album Description
Lateef & The Chief, a.k.a. Maroons, are Lateef The Truth Speaker, one half of the critically acclaimed Latyrx, and Chief Xcel, Blackalicious' musical mastermind. On this collaboration, they turn battle rhymes into statements of peace and celebrate survival, solidarity, and the sistas. Afrodiasporic beats effortlessly bring together jazz, samba, charanga, dub, and funk through hip-hop and fluid whirlwind rhymes rippling with metaphors and ideas.

Customer Reviews:
This Definitely Isn't Ruined.......2002-05-21
You're Gonna Ruin Everything is the second album to be released by Portland emo-rockers The Maroons. For a quick reference point, members of this band have played in/with The Jicks, Heatmiser, Elliot Smith, The Fastbacks and many more, and whilst there is definitely traces of the influence some of these bands (particularly Elliot Smith), The Maroons tend to sound more like the present crop of indie up and comers, particularly Death Cab For Cutie. The tunes on this album are all catchy, differing in pace between empathetic ballads and melodic powerpop tunes. The instrumentation itself is softly beautiful, and is complimented by frontman John Moen's gorgeous falsetto vocals. Picks of the crop include 'Lonely Summer', 'Swimmers' and 'Ruin Everything'. Whilst it is unfair to judge The Maroons based on their credentials, they have come up with a fine album that will hopefully be able to carve the band an identity independent of their illustrious pasts.

Customer Reviews:
Tight, bright, light pop songs with a bittersweet edge ..........1999-04-11
The first time I saw the Maroons come out on stage, they were just some unknown opening band that was going to delay the main act for me and keep me up late. But the minute they started playing, their infectious, bittersweet 3- and 4-minute pop/rock songs drew me right in. And when they left the stage 45 minutes later, I felt as if I could listen to them play all night. This album is a gem -- particularly tracks 2 (Wake Me, which flowers in just the way its name suggests), 7 (Afterthoughts, which builds to a head in a way that reminds me of falling in love), 8 (Medium Grey, a pop/rock song that has "hit single" written all over it) and 9 (Fond of Saying, a full-tilt pop rave). If you dig bands/performers such as Faster Tiger, The Young Fresh Fellows, Heavenly, The Posies and Devin Hill, you'll no doubt enjoy this Portland quartet's tasty pop/rock confections.
