5 out of 5 stars overall good and one really amazing song..........2005-09-27

"Making it up as i go along" is a really special song...wow! thanks Radney, i really appreciate your music.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2003-08-31

Having been the fan of Radney Foster's Are You Ready For the Big Show? CD, I had to pick up this one up when I saw it at a local pawnshop. Although I wasn't familiar with any of the songs, I was willing to chance the album and I'm so glad that I did.

After owning Another Way to Go, Are You Ready for the Big Show?, and Labor of Love, I must admit that the latter is my favorite. Labor of Love and Making it Up as I Go Along are both excellent songs. The other songs are also rather good, comparable to those songs on Radney's other recordings.

I was quite pleased with this recording.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Music.......2002-07-26

Though this album is arguably Radney Foster's weakest solo effort, this record still speaks to all that makes Foster our finest country artist -- tight songwriting, unique melodies unlike anything you'll hear on the radio, and a strong baritone voice ready to change your mind about what real country music sounds like. It's that good.

The best part? Foster generally writes all of his own stuff, and when he doesn't, he simply solicits the help of some of Nashville's finest. The record's highlights are many, but try out the title of track, along with "Precious Pearl," "Last Chance for Love," and "Making it Up as I Go Along," for a listen at Foster's magic touch with melody. You'll gladly play these last two repeatedly.

The public truly deserves Radney Foster, and while his first solo outing -- thus far -- is all that's yet made the top 40 country airways, this is an artist whose popularity will spill over with the right timing, luck, and good promotion.

Add this one to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2002-04-01

Country music doesn't get any better than Radney Foster. Every track is tight and free of useless production. I saw Radney in a small club in Texas. There was radney, the drummer, the bass player, and the steel player. That was all. No synths, electronic keyboard player doing fake strings. Just these guys up there sounding exactly like they do on the CD. I can't remember the last time music made me cry with emotion. Radney Foster performs music without the cookie cutter, without the magic star formula. It is just great, real country music.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2001-10-30

This is a must-buy album for Radney fans and country music lovers alike. There were some songs released from this album, but I don't recall them getting on the charts. Every single song is excellent - not a bad one in this collection. From the opening lines of "Willin' To Walk," you'll be hooked! "Never Say Die" is one of my favorites, recently recut by The Dixie Chicks. Radney's version is softer, more romantic and heartfelt. "Jesse's Soul" is an old-fashioned ballad story song with a modern sound to it. "Making It Up As I Go Along" closes out the album in fine fashion. Every song is a gem!

This makes another extraordinary album in my ever-growing Radney Foster collection. Enjoy!

Labor of Love, Sammy Kershaw's 1997 album, kicks things off with a Bob McDill song, "Honky Tonk America," a celebration of every dimly lit, beer-soaked nightclub in the nation--"a blue-collar place" with "a red-blooded crowd." And what kind of music, according to Kershaw and McDill, should one expect to hear in today's honky-tonk? "Louie, Louie," "Proud Mary," and "Wooly Bully."

As much as country purists may hate to hear it, today's Southern factory worker, the sort of person who's the backbone of the country audience, is more likely to dance to "Wooly Bully" on a Friday night than to "New San Antonio Rose." Kershaw is part of that core audience and so it's only natural that his Labor of Love reflects as much rock influence as country roots. Only purists would fault Kershaw for adding cannon-shot snare drums and cranked-up guitars to the fiddles and pedal-steel guitar, especially when these backing tracks sound as good as they do. Still, this set, like Kershaw's previous albums, is unfailingly polite. His voice is a marvelous instrument, and it sounds thick and creamy whether it comes out slow and sad, or fast and funny. The songs are all built around clever puns and catchy chorus jingles, but they never go any deeper than that.

On the album's most country-sounding track, "Thank God, You're Gone," Kershaw and his cowriter Mike Fornes describe a romantic break-up with a captivating ballad melody and the usual lyric details. The singer captures the self-pity of the situation in a gorgeous vocal, but he never quite touches the depths of post-break-up despair where anger, regret, and yearning are tangled in an undoable knot. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars This CD is so mellow and then it can rock.......2003-11-12

Sammy Kershaw has such a deep voice. It is so relaxing to
hear it. I love this CD. I especially like the ballads and
I think he does ballads best. His voice is so smmoth and
just ha a strong impression. I really think he is a very
underated country singer. This CD consists of fast country
tunes and ballads. It is country all the way.

5 out of 5 stars Sammy Kershaw - Labor Of Love.......2003-05-14

Here's an underrated singer whose vocal talent shows he deserves more success than he has achieved.

But furthermore he's also become his own man now on this album and vocal comparisons with George Jones are long gone.

Keith Stegall's production here allows Sammy to breathe and gives full presence to his voice rather than hiding it with banging drums and guitars. Even on the rockiest of songs here like the title track or Roamin' Love, the singer sings the hell out of the songs.

The last song on this set, Love Of My Life, is a beautifully-written ballad whose lyrics are simple, it must be said, but had the song been more involved lyrically, it would have diminished its impact and meaning.

Sammy also reflects on life in One Day Left To Live, gets cajun with Little Did I Know and all the others songs work perfectly for him. This is just his best record to date.

5 out of 5 stars Sammy's best, in my opinion..........2001-10-30

I bought this CD for "Love of My Life", but there are a lot of really good songs on here besides that one. Granted, there are a few I skip over, but overall this CD is a winner!!

5 out of 5 stars I really liked this CD!.......2000-12-28

This CD is a very good testament to the talent that Sammy Kershaw has. He has a very good voice, and has a good ear for a good song, which is a must since he does not write very much. He picked out gems like "Honky-Tonk America", "Matches", and "An Arm's Length Away". Then there are the two gems on the album. Those are "One Day Left To Live", which is another testament to living and loving like there is no tomorrow, and "Love Of My Life". Another one of the great country love songs. I'd recommend this album. It's worth the 12-15 bucks.

5 out of 5 stars Sammy's best work. Much better than his current release!.......1999-06-04

This CD is great! It starts off with a great tribute to the working man, in "Honky Tonk, America" and finishes with the heartfelt "Love of My Life." This is a good mix of all of what Sammy does well, highlighting his great vocal abilities, but not compromising the traditional country style that has made him a great musician.

Having seen Emory Joseph perform live recently, and having already kicked myself for not buying an autographed copy on the spot, I'm now making up for my mistake. This is a fine, fine performer with songs that have texture, character and humanity. A welcome addition to anyone's musical shelf. Buy it, and then go see him live!

    5 out of 5 stars Don't miss this album!.......2003-02-25

Buy this album. You won't be sorry. It's got a song for every mood, and the lyrics are meaningful and intelligent. Emory's voice is smooth but distinctive.

5 out of 5 stars Try It, You'll Like It!.......2003-02-24

Emory Joseph has cooked up an amazing CD. With help of some excellent layered backup from T-Bone Wolk, Kenny Aronoff and some others I can't recall.
My favorite cut is 'The Same', a moody ballad, but the rest of the CD comes in a close second. Earthy lyrics mixed with folksy, bluesy (is that a word?)acoustic backup, all telling a story that you'll want to hear.
I really like everything about this collection of songs.

    5 out of 5 stars Peep_the_Sot liqueurs it up!.......2003-02-23

The influences are obvious, but one need not mentionthem since EJ sets himself apart quite distinctly! Chuffing right off the top is 'Carolina Princess'giving us an excursion that shouldn't be denied if oneknows a thing or two about fun! While the song leavesone hip-shaking, try adding a shuffle while pouringinto 'Rhum and Coffee'. Have we the next best thing to Professor Longhair andRockin' Sidney? These two rib-sticking numbers areundeniable standouts and great openers one of whichfeatures Levon Helm and quite suitably so. A compositional shift in 'The Same' offers anexquisite melody that very much compliments EJ's voicewhich manages to take on every tale he tells withconviction. This is one pretty song! Initially not crazy about 'Trinkets' and then itmounts and builds and grows and so not a loser in thelot yet! Never one to linger with songs about pain but 'Earlyin the Morning' allows the narrator to get you throughthe night! Not sure if 'Daddy John' is autobiographical, but thecompelling organ and instrumental diversity tells meit is. Back on the rails to 'Be Home Baby' anothertoe-tapping mover and you can feel the hug! Greatguitar pickin'! And yet another pitch in voice! Can you say 'Work toDo'? ... This band cooks! 'Sweet William' is simply another wonderfully melodicstory that showcases Emory's ability to capture hisaudience and wonder what's next which leads us to myfavourite of the lot, but not before giving us a bitof quackery which somehow fits right in amidst thisvery novel release. 'Family Dog' completes this winning mix and againfeatures Levon Helm. If Mr. Emory has any more bonesburied it's best he start digging them up! Compulsive listening and a great addition to any musical library!

    4 out of 5 stars Must-own debut album!.......2003-02-20

From the day my mailman delivered my copy of L&S, it has been in my CD changer. "Carolina Princess", "The Same", "Rhum and Coffee" among my favorites, this album has kept me company for many miles on the 405. Hopefully, they will post some sound snips so you can see for yourself what a varied piece of work this album is. Emory has put together a complete package. The album rocks, it slows down in all the right places, and it even has a mysterious "hidden" track that will surely offend all the right people. I've recommended this album without hesitation to anyone who will listen to me. The only bad part about listening to this album so much is that it makes me want Emory's second album immediately! I certainly hope he gets back in the studio soon...

    2 out of 5 stars Tough going.......2002-09-18

Buyers beware - this CD contains a misrepresentation on the front to the effect that there are 2 albums on one CD, while the back explains (in small print) that quite a few songs from Labor were left off owing to time constraints... A bit disappointing to be misled in that way. Having said that, we're not missing anything if the Labor songs included here are the best from that album - they're quite terrible.

Yesterday, etc is clearly the better of the 2 albums, although the latter half of the album is tough going to say the least. For example, "Throwing a Good Love Away" is musically and lyrically twee and it doesn't get any better over 8+ excruciating minutes.

Having said that, this is worth buying for my money just for "Shadow", "I Found Love" and "You're the Love of My Life". "You're the Love of My Life" is absolutely classic Spinners - a mid-tempo chugger that should see you hit the dancefloor and almost worth the price of the CD on its own (at least for insane Spinners [people] like me).

      Album Description

Co-produced by Ty Tabor(Kings X), this project is definitely a labor of love and has been a long time coming for these guys. Brought together by friendships, a love of God, and a desire to share life experiences, this band brings a fresh approach to music and ministry. The band says, "until you are willing to sacrifice out of love for someone you have no business preaching". "We hope that through our music and ministry we are able to live out these ideas and share the joy and healing that only comes from knowing Jesus".

Contrary to what you're told in the product description, this CD was NOT "Co-produced by Ty Tabor(Kings X)." Ty was the executive producer, which is a different role from producer or co-producer. The sound quality of this CD is sub-par, and would have fared much better if Ty had been in the producer's seat. As a fan of King's X and Ty Tabor, I was duped a few years back on another site by the false description that this CD was produced by Ty, and it just wasn't very good, musically and sonically speaking. So, if you're looking at this product after a search for "Ty Tabor" (which is how it came up for me on this site), trust me when I say that this is NOT a must-have for Ty Tabor or King's X fans.

With his forays into Brazilian music, hip-hop, and Bach, musical boundaries have no meaning for the Philadelphia-born pianist Uri Caine. On this CD, Caine takes on composer Gustav Mahler. Caine, along with his jazz companions, clarinetist Don Byron and trumpeter Ralph Alessi, expand and elaborate on 14 of Mahler's lieders. With his spry allusions to Herbie Hancock and Glenn Gould, Caine manages to "keep it real" in the classical tradition, and introduce jazz and world themes into these compositions. Augmented by an eclectic array of singers, actors, and poets, Caine and company manage to pull of a musical mutiny of pleasing proportions with the inclusion of opera, Hebraic, and Germanic concert music. The title track is a mournful elegy to the atrocities of Columbine and the Holocaust while "Labor Lost" riffs on Freudian psychoanalysis. "The Lonely One in Autumn" and "On Youth," adapted from Mahler's "Das Lied von der Erde," breathe with an Asian atmosphere, thanks to the Silk Road sonorities of the Chinese erhu, dizi, and pipa instruments. Mahler remarked that, "I am thrice homeless. As a Bohemian born in Austria. As an Austrian among Germans. And as a Jew throughout the world." Uri Caine's expansive art is a welcome home for Mahler's restless and rootless genius. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

4 out of 5 stars I'VE HEARD OF NICHE MARKETS...........2005-01-28

...And we all have a niche (were made for our niches) but...

Why is it that when one discusses Uri Caine, one only gets to the actual music as the last thing, if you ever get to discussing the music at all?

For those of you who don't know Uri (a jazzman and an avant-garde guy--if ever there was one--at play in the fields of giants like Mahler--here and in Primal Light--as well as Bach--I can't recommend his Goldbergs enough) this is who he is. When you get to know his stuff, you'll see the irony in that statement.

      To get to the music--

Do not pull out. Do not dissect. If you're gonna give Uri Caine his due (I think you should at least give his works a once over), then you need to hear this stuff as a whole work; just like you'd treat with Mahler's stuff. Stepping into Two Blue Eyes or Song of the Prisoner in the Tower without perspective will make you run the other way.

However, taken as a whole, I find myself absorbed into the sound worlds Uri creates in Dark Flame. It's a little like coming down off the mountain when you're done.

This music makes me feel strangely closer to Mahler as well.

I can't think of a better recommendation for this work than that.

Dark Flame won't be everybody's cup of tea. But this is no novelty. It is a singular brew worth trying at least once.

      3 out of 5 stars Very difficult.......2005-01-03

I got this one because I'm familiar with Uri's playing with Dave Douglas. I figured it might be a strange album, but I underestimated how strange it was for me. This album doesn't have much jazz in it. The title track, "Shining Trumpets", and "St. Anthony" are the jazziest ones, and my favorites. Many of the other songs have voiceovers, most commonly a German voice which sounds like it was taken from "Cabaret". There's also some spoken English and Chinese. Since I'm unfamiliar with the context, and German and Chinese languages, the spoken pieces don't grab me.

I just found it difficult to listen to, and it doesn't make a lot of sense to me as a whole. This album may be a five-star album for someone else.

5 out of 5 stars Two great tastes that go great together! Caine and Mahler.......2004-06-24

Stark, Lush, Beautiful, Horrid, Moving and startling. Uri and Gustav do again and again. The arrangements and the absolute music are of the highest level. If you've not heard these works, do it now!
