Pianist Martial Solal and tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin have more in common than their status as septuagenarian French immigrants--Solal moved to Paris from his native Algeria in the 1940s, and Griffin settled in southern France in the '60s. Each plays in a unique style, unimitative and unimitated, informed by a virtuosity rarely heard on their respective instruments. Big words, but the facts remain.

Although he boasts an ambidexterity reminiscent of Art Tatum, Solal uses it in a far more understated way, pencil-sketching the fills and fillips of an arrangement where Tatum would have used tempera flourishes. And Griffin--on this recording, especially--can rise above the fireworks riffing of his hard-bop contemporaries; his colossal technique allows him to develop an idea further than many other saxists could take it, at which point he essentially turns his style into the substance of his improvisations. The 8 tunes on this relatively short (47-minute) disc show a matchup that results in at least Griffin's finest work in years. And why not? Performing with the sensitive, constantly inventive Solal must be like playing a jazz concerto grosso as he turns the keyboard into a chamber orchestra of varied colors and voicings to support Griffin's solos, then expands his own brilliant statements to provide echoes and cues for his partner.

On "Neutralisme," a raffish tone poem by Solal, they volley solo snippets with the telepathic empathy of the great jazz partners from Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines through Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, and Wayne Shorter and Joe Zawinul. Solal has mesmerized listeners for nearly half a century, but a paucity of U.S. releases has kept him out of the mainstream limelight. In & Out will serve as a splendid introduction for Solal newbies, a reminder of his restless and inspiring creativity for the rest of us, and delightful proof of Griffin's powerful command of line and emotion. --Neil Tesser

From Jazziz
The duo album In & Out should inspire renewed wonder that there hasn't been more of a fuss - at least, not in the U.S. - about the Algerian-born, Paris-based pianist Martial Solal. The album pairs the 72-year-old Solal with his contemporary and fellow repatriated Frenchman, the diminutive tenor saxist Johnny Griffin, whose colossal technique remains unabated from his days on the hard-bop front lines (even as his sensibilities have mellowed). But Griffin's is a common name in American jazz households; Solal's is not, despite that fact that he has sculpted one of the few unique, 20th-century piano personae, unimitative and unimitated. Solal's ambidexterity rivals that of Art Tatum or Oscar Peterson, but he uses it in a far more understated way, having pared away the flourishes of those forebears.

Solal's clear-eyed, sometimes stark poetry recalls the language of his countryman Albert Camus, but his philosophy does not; in his music, Solal achieves an unsentimentalized beauty that helps salve the existential angst Camus depicted. On his own, Griffin will coast when he can, but throughout this relatively short disc (47 minutes), Solal challenges him with inventive miniature orchestrations, and Griffin responds with some of his best work in years. For example, on the tour-de-force "Neutralisme," they trade phrases with the telepathic empathy that has characterized great jazz partnerships from Armstrong & Hines through Shorter & Zawinul.

4 out of 5 stars MacRae and Jones head a superb and O.K. adaptation.......2007-03-16

The film adaptation of Oklahoma heralded a technological breakthrough in widescreen cinema just as the original stage musical ushered in the integrated book musical. As such this film adaptation was treated as a special occasion, well-supervised by the creators themselves. The soundtrack, featured here, boasts sterling performances from MacRae and Jones making the most of their portrayals of Curly and Laurey, backed by a charismatic cast and superb orchestrations. And of course let's not forget the enveloping stereo sound that holds up well even today.

Despite being a Hollywood star, Gordon MacRae performs the part of Curly as if he was born to play it even on the stage. He shines vocally in his renditions of Oh, what a Beautiful Mornin' and Surrey with the Fringe on Top. He is well-partnered by Shirley Jones as a fresh and pert Laurey, lending her beautiful voice to the part. Although we don't hear much of her on this soundtrack, her partnering MacRae in People Will Say We're in Love exudes a masterful chemistry, as if they were setting sparks off at each other in their rendition of the song. Gene Nelson makes a dashing Will Parker and is equally well-matched by Gloria Grahame as Ado Annie. Grahame renders I Cain't Say No splendidly and partners Nelson in All er Nothin'. The supporting cast is filled out by Charlotte Greenwood's suitably caustic Aunt Eller and Rod Steiger's Jud. It's a pity that the film cut the song Lonely Room, otherwise Steiger would have better demonstrated the dark hues of the character of Jud. Yet it all adds up to a wonderful renditionh of this classic musical, enough to elicit a spontaneous YEOW! during this year of the Oklahoma centenary.

This EMI-Angel reissue offers one the advantage of the dance music and the main titles. This means that the listener gets the Kansas City and Farmer and the Cowman dance sequences, as well as the extended Dream Ballet. The only downside is the extraneous sound effects lifted from a DVD copy of the movie. Yes I share many of your sentiments that these sound effects tend to grate, and long for Didier Deutsch to have used the original untainted studio vault versions. However, let's at least be thankful that the CD producers have offered us a more comprehensive version of the Oklahoma soundtrack that we could only have dreamt of in the past.

In short, this is a wonderful and valuable addition to the R&H discography, and is an equally celebrated rendition of the score like the original Broadway cast recording. Warmly recommended to those who seek even their first version of Oklahoma.

Oklahoma has never sounded better as sung by Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones in the 1955 movie version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's unforgettable Broadway musical. The memory of MacRae's beautiful voice lives on with this CD. I never tire of hearing this wonderful music. From the opening overture to the finale you will feel as though you're right in the theater.

American bands have never gotten in the habit of their British counterparts, who tend to release lots of extended singles filled out with not-meant-for-prime-time experimentations. If the Beasties had gotten into that habit, this would be their B-side compendium: a dozen instrumental tracks showing off their groovier side, complete with plenty of wah peddle on the guitar and prominence given to frequent Beastie collaborators "Money" Mark Nishita (keyboards) and Eric Bobo (percussion). It's tough to believe that the same band is responsible for this and the Aglio e Olio EP, but it goes a long way in explaining how they've remained viable for so long. --Randy Silver

This is a great chill, party album. A great collection of the Beasties' instrumental tracks taken from previous albums.

5 out of 5 stars The Beasties' Best Effort.......2007-05-28

This CD really showcases the band's talent. An amazing disc from start to finish. Not for you "classic" Beastie Boys fans, as this is an all-instrumental, all-funk CD. It's reminiscent of old Meters. I've yet to turn someone on to this and not have them LOVE it. Boys -- we'd love to see you do more of this amazing stuff!

Had the 'cassette' wore it out listened to it so much! Never heard anything the Beastie Boys have done that I didn't like. The In Sound from Way Out reminds me of the type of music my father's generation would have enjoyed only with a different beat and different sound. At 50 years old I am very open minded and enjoy an extremely wide-range of music. Please note: This listing is in my wife's name!

The great irony of John Barry's Academy Award-winning score for Out of Africa (which also took the Oscar as Best Picture) is that it almost never was; director Sydney Pollack had originally envisioned the film with native African music, going as far as laying the indigenous score down as he was editing. But the weight of John Barry's arguments--not to mention his considerable track record and composing gifts--held sway, and the composer delivered on his intent: a lush, romantic masterpiece for the ages. --Jerry McCulley

Out of Africa is a CD with beautiful music. When I listen to it, I imagine myself in the nature of Africa. You will enjoy it!

2 out of 5 stars CD has missing track.......2006-12-03

John Barry's compositions are pleasantly sweeping. There's nothing wrong with this album, just not really enough to recommend it.

I was puzzled to learn that some time between my buying the LP record and the issuing of this CD, the track "The Music of Goodbye (love theme from Out of Africa)" was omitted. It's not that this song, sung by Melissa Manchester, is a must-have; it's more that it's sneaky to leave off tracks when you reissue a soundtrack in another format.

I would buy this again, its fun for a change every now and again but not an everyday cd.

4 out of 5 stars Better than the Arctic Monkeys.......2007-06-09

I heard "She Moves in Her Own Way" on the radio one day and had to find out who sang it. Already owned the Arctic Monkeys CD and heard the Kooks compared to them, so I gave it a shot and ordered the CD instead of downloading one song. I was not disappointed. I think the whole CD is more vibrant, less pompous and a lot more fun to listen to than Arctic Monkeys -- which I also did like. "Naive" is a standout, and I even like the more throwaway songs like "Seaside." One of the best CDs I've bought in the past year.

5 out of 5 stars Best New Brit Album - The Past Decade.......2007-03-10

These guys are amazing. There are literally 10 solid tracks on this disc. A friend of mine told me NOT to buy the CD but to simply pay for each song that I liked on iTunes or another Music Service.

After getting my order from Amazon, I quickly told him he was crazy. When you buy just a few songs you don't get the cover with the lyrics and info about the band. Sorry. I have an MP3 player but will still buy great music on CD, especially if it's a band like the Kooks. Good stuff. And this was their debut album - can't wait to see what they do for an encore.

Though the band likely didn't know it at the time, this would prove to be the last studio record by one of the most famous rock & roll bands in the world. Drummer John Bonham died shortly after its release. Although nothing compares to early Led Zeppelin--and they lost many longtime fans in the late 1970s--this LP is nothing to be embarrassed by. They were quick to embrace and experiment with synthesizers, and while it wears a little thin by record's end (the synth-bloated "Carouselambra" and the slick AOR hit "All My Love"), it adds a certain majestic tone to the heavy-hitting opener, "In the Evening," and gives a rollicking good-time feel to "South Bound Suarez." Plant's howl and Page's bluesy guitars are in fine form on "I'm Gonna Crawl" and the lilting "Fool in the Rain" recalls the pretty numbers from their early career. --Lorry Fleming

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars atypical zep but still a classic.......2007-05-21

first, zep is one of the top 5 rock bands of all time, in this reviewer's opinion. though this, their last album, is not representative of the sound they forged in their earlier albums, in my opinion it is still a classic.

"in thru the out..." finds zep in a mellower mood, perhaps because they had matured, perhaps because of things happening in their lives, perhaps due to other musical influences [the advent of synthesizers, for one]. who knows. but this album still contains all the elements that made zep great -- the inimitable celtic-blues howl of robert plant; the masterful dynamics and production that marked all their work; the amazing rhythm section of bonham and jones; above all, the wide-ranging brilliant blues rock guitar of jimmy page. the songs still are primarily about love, loss, want and regret. and just the joy of rock n roll.

the texture of the music is still almost orchestral in its tapestry of sounds. the guitar playing, though more restrained, still runs the gamut from hard simple blues chords to intricate screaming solo's. the final two songs -- all my love and i'm gonna crawl -- end the album on a majestic, bluesy and masterful note. the latter in particular sounds like it comes the first decades of rock, but for plant's weary vocals and the powerful climax.

3 out of 5 stars Led Zeppelin - 'In Through The Out Door' (WEA) 3 1/2 stars.......2007-05-21

Review no. 231. Originally released in the later part of 1979, I remember the very day this swansong of the mighty Led Zeppelin hit the stores. Myself and a few others planned on attending their concert in Chicago. But, of course their U.S. tour was sadly called off after the death of drummer Johm Bonham. Maybe not as great as Zeppelin's 'IV', 'Houses Of The Holy' or 'Physical Graffiti' (my personal favorites) but still a decent effort. Tracks that managed to make it to the late night 'FM staple play list' for at least awhile were the refreshing "In The Evening", "Fool In The Rain", the upbeat "Hot Dog", "All My Love" and the bluesy "I'm Gonna Crawl". Worthy of a place in your music collection.

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars-- A new sound for the band's swan song........2007-05-09

In the wake of punk and disco, Led Zeppelin in 1979 must have looked very old. For what would end up being their last album, "In Through the Out Door", the band responded by embracing synthesizers and new sounds. This may have had more to do with the dominant voice on the record being bassist John Paul Jones rather than guitarist Jimmy Page, who was absent for large portions of the sessions, but under Jones' guidance, the band produced perhaps their most unique album.

This change in sound is apparent from the outset-- the churning, ambient noise intro of "In the Evening" signals the change before cascading in a descending, sweeping dramatic riff that recalls the best of "Physical Graffiti". Topping off a great fierce vocal by Robert Plant amidst the keyboard swirl is a fantastic, almost blunting solo by Page. The rest of the record doesn't stick to this path though, exploring everything from a feature for Jones' boogie piano (the superb "Southbound Saurez"), an electric rock take on country and western (the highly entertaining "Hot Dog") and a couple absolutely fantastic pop songs (the lilting "Fool in the Rain", with a fuzz soaked solo from Page, the tender, synth-string driven power ballad "All My Love"). Along the way, there's even an extended cut ("Carouselambra"), that while it's long and melodramatic, manages to hold interest and a great blues closer ("I'm Gonna Crawl").

"In Through the Out Door" is probably not for everybody, it's a very different Led Zeppelin, but I've often thought it was among the best work they've ever done. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Hey, she's my baby/Let me tell you why.......2007-03-16

A tough crowd, from all corners, has dogged "In Through the Out Door" for years and years, and I guess an album -- a document -- is ripe for the pickings through the eternities. The funny thing about all this "swan song" stuff is that Robert Plant, to just draw one of them out of a hat, was only 31 when this record dropped. Led Zeppelin played just about the best dinosaur rock ever made and then were made dinosaurs by the young, loud and snotty. Those folks too have come and gone -- Shane McGowan of the Pogues, is what? 49? last I read. Anyone who has seen the Holy Grail Led Zeppelin DVD sets released in 2003, knows it's futile to beef with hell's gods; they simply lord over the land no matter what the puny humans are up to in any given year. Compared to that stuff, which could easily be wrapped in gold and prayed over by the heathen rock worshippers that still lurk about in this fractured, screwed-up end-of-days world we live in, In Through the Out Door is thin gruel, indeed. But judged on its own terms, some very nice things are delivered. "All of My Love" was probably the only real pop hit this band ever had ("Stairway to Heaven" being a manufacture of fan favorite turning into tightening FM radio playlist staple; and "Whole Lotta Love" being more orgasm than song). That it doesn't sacrifice any dignity for the band is a pretty good point scored. "I'm Gonna Crawl," too, seems unjustly underrated in the canon -- an enormous, deep metal blues ballad tour de force by Plant that showed the band's ability to strip bombast (it's only not bombast compared to the rest of their work) while delivering a convincing emotional wallop. "In the Evening" is a conventional megaton blast that would have done well on "Presence" and there's also "Fool in the Rain," and the rest, well, doesn't do much of anything. So, that's two keepers, two pretty good ones and three that come along for the ride. Hence, three stars.

4 out of 5 stars Led Zep sounding like 1979,not 1973...or' 75. One of my faves.......2007-03-05

Oh,man...the girl's loved this album as background music for...well, you know what I mean! This album was a definite departure from any previous release, but I like the extra input from John Paul Jones.(actually,a LOT of extra input). This not a massively guitar driven CD. Production is great. My memories from having a good time with friends while listening to this are very fond. I'll always own a copy, and recommend this to most anyone that loves Zep.

Product Description

A trio of noted Australian musicians--Iva Davies, Richard Tognetti and Christopher Gordon--composed the film's score. They previously collaborated on "The Ghost of Time," a piece commissioned for the Millennium celebrations in Sydney, which came to the attention of Peter Weir. The director was so impressed, he played the piece on the Master And Commander set throughout production, and he asked its creators to write the music for his movie. The score interweaves "Old World" and "New World" music, reflecting the talents and backgrounds of its composers. Iva Davies hails from both pop and classical traditions; Richard Tognetti, one of the world's great violin virtuosos, taught Russell Crowe the ins and outs of the instrument; and film/television composer Christopher Gordon brought orchestral texture to the project. Given the period, it comes as no surprise that the score is infused with source music from Bach (Cello Suite) and Mozart, among other great classical composers. Percussion dominates portions of the score. "Drums signal the forward movement of the ship," says Davies, "that it's on a mission. It brings you back into the action." The score's biggest surprise comes with its use of synthesizers. "Peter doesn't make films in the expected way," says Davies, "and for that reason we wanted the score to be not what everyone expected. Peter wanted some scenes to have what I call a kind of 'futuristic' sense"--conveying the idea that these 19th century sailors were cutting-edge explorers.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous.......2007-02-12

A marvelous collection of compositions which greatly enhanced this fantastic film. This CD is marvelous on its own. It did not leave my CD player for weeks.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2006-12-14

I purchased this soundtrack because I really enjoyed this music while watching the movie. But I was a little disappointed at the CD. Some soundtracks allow you to follow the entire plot like through the music (such as the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack). But this CD doesn't provide that. Several of the songs are recurring in the film but are only played once in the soundtrack. I would have liked the soundtrack to reflect the music for the whole film rather than just excerpts.

I give the music 5 stars and the CD 2-1/2 stars.

5 out of 5 stars the music .......2006-11-10

The music is excellent . Flows well Better than the movie score

3 out of 5 stars Good incidental music but not great listening music - except the classical pieces.......2006-11-09

The soundtrack for Master and Commander contains two distinct types of music. First there is the incidental music for the film. These pieces are heavy on the bass side of the orchestra and are often emphasized with bass drums and tympani. This music is very effective and appropriate for the scenes in the film, and I commend the composers for making a soundtrack that so seemlessly and effortlessly invokes the moods and excitement of the visuals. Unfortunately, these pieces are quite moody and slow moving - great as incidental music but not so interesting to listen to as straight orchestral music.

The second type of music is much more enjoyable to listen to. Those that have seen the film know there are several scenes in which people are playing music - for example, Aubrey and Maturin in the captain's cabin performing a cello-violin duet, or the sailors on deck playing sea shanties on tin whistles. The pieces chosen for the film range from Bach to traditional folk music, and are a welcome addition to the soundtrack. The performances are very good (including a cello solo by Yo Yo Ma), and the recording quality is excellent. Deserving special mention is the Boccherini piece (La Musica Notturna Delle Strada di Madrid), which serves as a second unofficial theme song for the movie. The piece itself is presented in its entirety, and there is a callback to the piece in the incidental music as well, which is a welcome ray of levity in an otherwise oppressive piece.

People purchasing this disc run the real risk of being disappointed - the incidental music works so well in the context of the film that you are likely to think (as I did) that the music is itself worth listening to alone. Unfortunately, I don't find this is the case, but the classical music that is included makes this a soundtrack worth having, especially for the Boccherini piece.

3 out of 5 stars Great classical music accompanies bland original score.......2006-09-27

The original music to this film is dull, repetitive, and only offers the hint of good music at certain points during it's lengthy tracks. But what about all the good music you heard in the film? That was all classical music, which was used in the film incredibly well. There are three tracks in particular that save this album. The piece by Corelli is used as something the captain and doctor play together. It is one of the most beautiful pieces of baroque music of which I am aware. A second piece, Vaughn Williams "Fantasia" is the piece heard when the crewmen have to cut the line that might save their friend who fell overboard. It's a tragic scene and accompanied perfectly by the heart-breakingly glorious piece. The original piece of music is quite a bit longer than the version on the CD, but the original version also tends to drag a little in places. All the best parts are on the version of the piece in the film. The third classical piece from the album that saves it is the cello solo by Bach that plays as a theme for the galapagos islands. This solo is performed perfectly by Yo Yo Ma. These tracks make the album worth purchasing. If you already have them, avoid the album because the rest is not very enjoyable. If you wonder about this one, watch the film and listen for the music. It speaks well for itself in the film.

Here are three dozen pieces of music, all played by Yo-Yo Ma, culled from his extensive discography. Aside from the technical mastery and beautiful tone that are absolutes in all of his playing, one is dazzled by his curiosity and ability to adapt to so many forms and types of music. His Bach and Vivaldi are pellucid and played with non-sentimental crispness, his tango music gritty and rhythmically pungent, his jazz seemingly spontaneous, the "Meditation" from Thais simply ravishing, "Anything Goes" a romp, and the Appalachian music performed with both respect and a great twang, while the traditional Chinese music is fascinating. It's really a matter of how much Ma loves whatever he plays here, how entirely he becomes involved in it, and what a fine partner he invariably is to other musicians. This collection is a doozy--it is truly "essential." --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars pure genius.......2007-05-21

No instrument asks more from the soul of an artist as the cello does.
Yo Yo Ma shows to be master of the instrument and his interpretations en technique are pure genius. Everyone should have this album in his (or hers of course) basic classical collection

4 out of 5 stars Another great Yo-Yo Disc.......2007-05-15

Incredible. My young cellist (son) loves it. Beautiful music. The album is well organized and each song transitions nicely.

5 out of 5 stars The Versatile Yo-Yo Ma.......2007-03-29

I've found this collection to be extremely delightful! It gives you a sense of the versatility of Yo-Yo Ma like no other, with one disc being dedicated more to his classical side, while the other explores jazz and world music venues. Not your typical "greatest hits" collection.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to "alternative" classical music!.......2007-02-19

It's wonderful to hear three such talented musicians put together a collection of non-classical music on revered instruments. This is not "The Yo-yo Ma Show" with two other guys! The music is varied but the performances are great and -- in some cases, e.g. Appalachia Waltz -- fantastic. I was driving the first time I heard the title piece and immediately started sobbing and had to pull over; it was that beautiful! This would be a good CD choice for children to listen to, as it gives a fine exposure to the amazing sounds that the three instruments can make when in the right hands.

5 out of 5 stars It's Yo-Yo so it's Exquisite.......2007-02-12

Yo-yo Ma has never been content to stick with the standard cello classics. Of course he has recorded the classics - the magnificent Bach Cello Suites (incredible and the visual DVD only enhances the effect), Vivaldi, Beethoven, Faure, Dvorak, etc. His evolution as an artist is an on-going process, thus there's Yo-Yo playing Tango (Astor Piazzolla), Yo-Yo playing Jazz (Claude Boling), Yo-yo playing Brazilian music or John Williams. And now we have the Apalachia Waltz, a beautiful, virtuoso and haunting piece.
I, too, found many of the sounds unique. For a real experience, listen in a darkened room with a pair of superior earphones - the things you pick up will shock. I literally turned my head several times, convinced that the artist was in the room.

As one reviewer noted, this is not supposed to be the rustic sound one might imagine or (the reverse) simply an intellectual exercise. The artist (with able assistance) seems to draw on some kind of inner reserve and literally pour his soul into his newest project. I, for one, applaud this widening of the boundaries between genres and hope that it continues.
Let's not forget the other artists, particularly Meyer. Many times the celebrity saps all the attention leaving a wake of sore feeling in their wake. Ma has always been one to give credit where credit is due and in this case it is due to those who ably assisted him. My grade - A

5 out of 5 stars Love it- great for weddings.......2007-01-24

I used this and Appalachian Journey for my wedding music. I used Track 2 (Appalachian Waltz) as my entry music. The rest I just had playing on a cd player as background music while my guests were waiting on me. It was perfect for our outdoor Fall wedding. Hearing track 2 always brings the memory of our beautiful day flooding back.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar album.......2006-11-10

This disc is top-notch in all respects. The playing is great by Ma and O'Conner for sure, but the bass work is awesome. Meyer is as good a player as there is in the world at the present time in my opinion. I am a cellist and bassist and find it difficult to believe that some of the things he does are possible. If you like top quality string playing, order this album today.

5 out of 5 stars **Superb**.......2006-07-19

I absolutely love this album -- the music resonates with one's soul. Even if you don't have a cello fetish as I, you can't go wrong with this album. It offers a wonderful range from adagio to allegro.....A true musical feast. I especially enjoy Butterfly's Day Out and First Impressions. Dolce...

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars John Rutter Collection.......2007-02-19

This CD is one of several that features Rutter directing his own choir. It has a good cross section of the John Rutter compositions, and is a good starting place for someone who has not heard Rutter's music before. I think you will be "hooked" if you really love choral music.

4 out of 5 stars Typically gorgeous Rutter.......2005-12-20

I love John Rutter's music. Especially the "For the Beauty of the Earth" that is on this CD. Rutter is not the most inventive or varied composer of modern music, but if you have a taste for traditional choral writing with some angelic children's chorus singing, then you will probably share my enjoyment of Rutter's writing. Unfortunately I cannot give this CD 5 stars when it seems there is a drum set tapping annoyingly away on several of the songs. I do not understand this at all and am bothered by it every time I listen to those songs. It's a shame, because otherwise I love the music, and think it is lushly written, and simply but beautifully performed. I would highly suggest listening to sample track 3 before purchasing -- you can hear what sounds like a ride-cymbal right at the very end of the sample. This sound occurs in several of the songs on this recording.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2005-12-03

I am a huge John Rutter fan. The lilting melodies, the poignant lyrics and the lush orchestrations make his music not only accessable but also uplifting. This compilation, although drawing from many other previous recordings, is a great composite of his wirk. The sound is exquisite. Even if you own other recordings of this music, this is worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars To sample Rutter's best music, this is the one........2005-06-30

I purchased this CD as an introduction to the music of John Rutter and went on to purchase many more of his compositions. Still, this remains my favorite collection. It is choral music at its absolute finest. Far from "just church music", this CD has songs of faith, a few Christmas carols, a Celtic song for lovers, and even a child's tune or two. While most of the pieces are peaceful, warm, and thought-provoking, a few are up-tempo and lively. In my opinion, it is a perfectly balanced collection in which one song flows beautifully into the next with no sense of a jarring change of pace. If you have any interest in choral music, begin with the best...John Rutter... and this superb arrangement. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2005-04-29

The John Rutter Collection in my opinion is one of the finest and most perfect works I've ever heard. The Cambridge Singers demonstrates the best vocal discipline and style of any vocal group in the world.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not My Style.......2007-05-11

This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Western Music.......2005-07-29

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

5 out of 5 stars A great follow-up.......2003-08-29

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.
