Featuring two of Charles Mingus's last major works, the 1978 Cumbia & Jazz Fusion is typically ambitious and exciting. The 28-minute title track merges a winning theme played on reeds and Latin percussion, full-on big-band passages, and a burlesque of "Shortnin' Bread" that climaxes in cries of "Freedom! Freedom!" One of a kind, to be sure. "Todo Modo" covers nearly as much ground, moving between a gloomy theme and inspired upbeat passages with grand sax solos by George Adams. This CD edition adds two short takes of Mingus's solo piano on a medley of "The Wedding March" and his own "Slow Waltz." The maestro was to make only two more albums, but his physical decline is belied by the music's power. --Rickey Wright

As a follow-up to her 2005 Latin Grammy win, Mexican-American diva Lila Downs has chosen to release a loving tribute to canciones rancheras, the heartfelt ballads ubiquitous in cantinas throughout Mexico. With their merry accordion riffs and perky snare-led rhythms, the tunes can be reminiscent of Cajun music or Colombian cumbias, but even the cheeriest numbers harbor fate-haunted undertones. The singer's darkly sweet, resonant voice interprets each the fifteen tracks to a fare-thee-well. Her fiery South-of-the-border exhibitionism and touches of dry humor are mirrored by assorted comedic whiz-bang sounds that surface amid the mostly acoustic mix. Third generation accordionist Flaco Jimenez, the doyen of Tex-Mex conjunto (a working class style descended from an older but still extant groove known as norteño,) weaves in and out among bass, harps, mariachi-like fiddles and assorted guitars. Peppered with antique-sounding bytes, dramatic spoken poems and even an in-your-face rap (during "Tu Recuerdo Y Yo", track four), the album plays like a slightly surreal movie that is no less affecting for being nearly untranslatable. --Christina Roden

Lila Down's la cantina.......2007-07-03
I love Lila Down, but not being mexican, this is not my type of music. My mexican friends of certain age (not very young) give it 5 stars.
Absolutely fabulous.......2007-07-02
I can't recall the reason I originally placed an order for this Lila Downs CD. I had never heard about the artist nor had any knowledge about Mexican language. I presume I read some reviews and just tried it.
But no regrets I can honestly say. At the moment La Cantina is one of my mostly played CDs and it seems I'll never get bored with it - though I still have just a hint what the songs are about. But the FEELINGS are there; sometimes sorrow, sometimes happiness, sometimes something in between.
No use in praising Lila's voice as it has been done in so many reviews before. So I settle to my headline comment: Absolutely fabulous. Now I have already five Lila Downs CDs but I still consider this as the best one. Whatever your taste in music is - this is good.
soulful, beautiful music.......2007-05-22
Love this album. Lila Downs is wonderful - I wish I could own all of her albums but I had to choose just one for now. I chose this one - and I was not disappointed. It is a mix of soulful balads and upbeat even dancable tunes. I especially love "la cumbia de mole" in both spanish and english. I challenge you to listen without singing along and moving. Buy this - you will have no regrets other than that you didn't buy it sooner.

Lila Downs is just amazing on this album, her powerful vocals and energy are just incrediable.
Lila's Best.......2007-04-10
I thoroughly enjoyed Lila Down's new album, Cantina. She is a very original artist, and I highly recommend this album.
I wish she would return to Minnesota and do a concert!

World musician Lila Downs experienced a career renaissance thanks to her contributions to the 2002 Frida movie and soundtrack . After two well-received solo albums, the Narada label has reissued Downs' dramatic debut album, La Sandunga. The singer released the album independently in 1997, and it still sparkles with the immediacy and passion of a woman completely connected to and excited by her craft. Every song on La Sandunga, including the album's three bonus tracks, flows effortlessly into the next. It's as if the album was recorded without pause during one very creative recording session. Downs' Mixtec-Indian and American background is an obvious influence on her work. The album is peppered with lush strings and blaring horns. It's all anchored by Downs' wildly diverse vocal stylings, which even manage to spice up the oft-recorded album closer, "Besame Mucho." --Joey Guerra
Customer Reviews:
Sublime.......2006-02-20
Amongst all four Lila Downs releases so far, there is little doubt in my mind that this one remains an all time favorite.
Needless to say, I have become a huge fan, and all CDs by Lila and her fabulous band fully deserve five stars, period. But this one is the most indengenious one, the one of her roots, where her true character and amibition shine through in its most pure form.
I especially adore songs like La Sandunga with its magic touch, or Naila, maybe because I am a bit a sentimental guy. Anyway - buy all of her CD's, but give this one a special listen.
Hopefully, she will never burn out and continue with her wonderful voice and the intelligence and subtelty of her almost dylanesque or even taupinian lyrics.
Sublime.
Sung poetry at its best...........2006-01-09
Lila Downs put together a collection of songs that not only speak to the magic of Southern Mexico; they transport us to the deep old roots of indigenous beliefs and clashing-culture interactions. A general glance at the tracks is enough to grasp the great lyrical tradition of Mexico.
Mexico sings to the women, and Lila Downs, a woman herself, puts her heart into the singing with her powerful, hunting voice. Tracks such as "La Llorona", traditional within the Mexican psyche, speak of the life and deeds of two beautiful women who are being flattered by the strophes dedicated to them through singing. They are key figures in Mexican tradition and their presence has endured the pass of years (since Colonial times) to the point of being perpetuated in such wonderful songs as interpreted by Downs.
Most of the tracks are favored nationally in Mexico. Lila Downs has taken them and made some outstanding arrangements, rendering them unique and magical. "La Llorona". "Sabor a Mi", "El Venadito", "La Malagueña" and "Perfume de Gardenias" make you relive the past and think of the present as a new time in which tradition and love mesh indistinctly.
As a young Mexican myself, I find Lila Down's albums a means of discovery to my own culture, as opposed to those over-played singers of the present whose new rhythms lack the charateristical sounds of Mexico.

a glimpse into Lila Downs' rich, cultural heritage..............2005-10-28
I cannot emphasize enough how stunningly gorgeous and heartfelt this album is. "La Sandunga" presents the dual cultural identity of Lila Downs to the masses. Following the release of the soundtrack from the movie, "Frida," Downs' talent was brought to the forefront, once people became aware of her featured musical contributions to the album. "La Sandunga" is a prequel, if you will, to this surge in popularity. This album was originally released in 1997. We hear Lila Downs' rich cultural influences of her maternal Mixtec Indian lineage in "La Llorona" and "Sandunga" (more traditional flavored songs), and a more jazzy take on the classic "Besame Mucho" (deriving the more Americanized influences, channeling her father's side--he is of Scottish ancestry, but born in the United States).
Lila Downs' album is a great opportunity for those of us, previously not exposed to Mixtec music, to listen to the best of the best. Whether we hear jazz rhythms, traditional percussive instruments derived from Mexico's indigenous roots, or more traditional Spanish-derived ballads, this is a true example of how all music is interconnected through rhythm, interpretation and emotional sentiment. You will love this...I guarantee it.
La Sandunga by Lila Downs.......2005-10-21
I really didn't want to give a star at all. It was definitely too militant. I was introduced to her from the Frida CD and have Border and was somewhat happy with that as there were just a few what I would call militant songs. By this La Sandunga is by far toooooo much.
The sultry, sassy sound of Downs at her best in this debut CD!.......2005-08-26
I first heard Lila Downs' distinctive sultry, sassy voice in the film "Frida." The movie's entire soundtrack is extraordinary, and I still listen to the CD frequently. Fortunately Ms. Downs has come out with four albums since then. I bought them all because I love the passion and soul she puts into her music. "La Sandunga," her debut album released in 1997, is one of my favorites, with its highly original arrangements. She weaves the indigenous music of her native lands - Mexico and the United States - into a multicultural fabric. Her variegated sound is a real fusion of Mexican folk songs, rich American blues and jazz, along with some pop, mixed in with Afro-Cuban and Brazilian rhythms. Lyrics are in Spanish, English and Mexico's Mayan, Zapotec, Nahuatl, and Mixtec Indian dialects. I have never heard the classics "La Llorona" and "La Malaguena" sung quite like this before. Absolutely fantastic!!
"La Sandunga" is an unusually eclectic mix, based on Ms. Downs' international artistic vision! Her formal vocal training (opera) gives her a tremendously varied range. Her songs come from the villages whose culture she studied after leaving opera studies and her repertoire includes boleros, ballads and rancheros, as well as original compositions backed by a multi-ethnic, very talented band. A Brazilian guitarist, a Cuban bassist, a Chilean drummer, a Mexican harpist, and a pianist/saxophonist/musical director from New Jersey create a creative, crisp, jazzy, at times bluesy Latin sound.
The title song, "La Sandunga," is a traditional Zapotec folk song. It is usually played at local festivities and at weddings. "La Zandunga" is a type of cancion performed as a Mexican waltz. It is a result of the music of the conquistadores,' who arrived from the Spanish provinces of Navarra and Leon, combined with that of indigenous cultures.
Other highlights include: "Pobre Changuita," which epitomizes Mexican country music and is one of my favorite cuts; "Ofrenda" is a corrido inspired by Mixtec immigrants who come to the US to find work and die here; "Yunu Yucu Ninu" is an extraordinary Mixtec poem written by Juan de Dios Ortiz, a Mixtec poet from San Miguel el Grande. It is truly beautiful. There is a Spanish and English translation in the linear notes; "Pinotepa," another favorite, is known as a chilena, a musical style brought from Chile by African slaves; The last three songs, bonus tracks, "Perfume de Gardenias," "La Maleguena," "Besame Mucho," are "part of a musical collaboration with choreographer Cecilia Lugo and the contemporary dance company Contempodanza. They were originally part of a collection called 'Trazos,' released in limited edition in 1999." I already mentioned "La Llorona" above.
Lila Downs is a Mexican-American vocalist, with a Scottish-American father, and a Mixteca mother. She grew up in both the Mexican state of Oaxaca and in Minnesota, USA, bi-lingual and bi-cultural. Lila received formal voice training in Mexico and in the States, and performs her own compositions, as well as tapping into the rich music from Mexico's indigenous peoples. Ms. Downs stated during an interview: "I have this special relationship with my voice. Though I've never considered myself to be a spiritual person....it's a spiritual feeling I have, which began when I studied anthropology. I began to have something approaching awe for this thing that came out of my body, which had to do with something bigger than me. Awe for this gift."
La Sandunga" is a wonderful CD! Lila Downs is a unique artist - simply superb! Highly recommended.

Singer-songwriter Lila Downs uses these 15 compositions (both originals and covers) to explore the joys and sorrows experienced by Mexican immigrants who cross the border for a better life only to experience exploitation and racism in this country. A child of a Mixtec Indian mother and Anglo-American father, the talented Downs brings in a fresh perspective from two cultural worlds. She imbues the Mexican cumbia style--which is itself a variation on a Colombian form of dance music integrating Latin, Native American, and African styles--with blues, jazz, and even a little hip-hop as pre-Colombian and Mexican percussion nestles comfortably with strings and electric guitar, piano, and bass. Lila Downs is a wide-ranging singer who passionately expresses her melancholic subject matter without lapsing into melodrama, and with this album she crosses musical borders of her own. --Bryan Reesman

An interesting CD for fans of Lila.
the voice of a Godess.......2005-08-13
All i had too do was to listen to the first track on this CD and i was hooked, this woman has the voice of a Godess, and the lyrics, wow incredible, my only wish now is to see her live in concert!!!!
A lament for Mexican immigrants.......2004-11-18
BORDERS is dedicated to the Mexican migrants who struggle to cross the border into the US, and opens with a haunting contemporary lament in 'Mi Corazon Me Recuerda'.
Accompanied here by pre-Columbian and Mexican folk instruments, Downs chooses a bass background and non-traditional style to add power to her lament.
To begin is to end to end is to begin..........2004-05-25
My friend Maude from DC turned me onto this disc a couple of weeks ago during a brief visit and I was captivated after the first ten bars. Her recommendation is that the cd doesn't do Lila's voice justice after seeing her live. Until I have that experience I won't challenge the point. All I have have is this recorded representation by which to judge. Ms Downs uses her remarkable voice to deliver the most heartfelt and moving performance top to bottom to have graced my ears in quite a while. She covers a variety of topics and genres with originality and power making me mindful of any number of wonderful chanteuses. I will definitely be out in search of more titles (explains why I am here now). I've read people referring to Lila as the modern day incarnation of Frida Kalo(I'm certainly not here to refute that) but within a musical context she may be this age's Joan Baez. Thanks for the tip Maude. Most of all, thank you Lila...
A powerful singer and a great band.......2003-12-22
"Mi Corazón Me Recuerda" is one of my all-time favorite recordings. Haunting lyrics, great arrangement, a commanding vocal performance. My recommendation is that you see Lila Downs in concert, that's what got me to buy her CDs. She has a huge stage presence; her audience loves her. The band is really more of a jazz combo always ready to break out into solos. I love bands that are unique so they are hard to categorize. This band fits squarely in that non-category.

One of Wyclef's Greatest works.......2007-05-19
This album is probably one of the best albums I have heard in a long time. It tells some of Haiti's history and gives alot of respect to the rest of Carribean. It reveals Haiti's proud history of Independence.Dieu vous bénit Wyclef. Bonjour le Pacifique du sud. Ceci est un grand cd. Great CD.

I loved the fugees and love wyclef. His albums always have the carribean flavor. Must have in the collection it is a classic.

Love It!!!!!!.......2006-02-23
I love this cd. It's upbeat and fun. I listen to it everyday. I hope he puts out another cd in this same style. My favorite song is President but Fistibal festival is a close second. There's not a song on here that I don't like. I highly recommend this cd.
Great WORLD album.......2005-12-16
This is quite possibly my favorite album ever. It doesn't fit in with Wyclef's past rap and hip-hop albums, but it is an excellent world/carribean cd. I especially like Bicentennial. If you want to have an uplifting album with great flow, buy this one. I believe that Wyclef should continue both with this carribean and his rap as well.

Musica muy bueno!.......2007-05-24
I was doing a Powerpoint presentation on Panama with my class. They loved the music, it introduced them to music they had never heard before. I also look forward to playing this CD at my annual BBQ, my parents will be proud! :)
GREAT OVERLOOKED MUSIC.......2006-08-03
This is just great music. The producer has made a tastefully selection in each track of the compilation. The result, is nothing less than a magnificent overview of the diversity of Panamanian music. A diversity that can only be trace to the multiethnic background of the people of the isthmus. You can enjoy pure original soul music (tracks 12, 9, 2 ) with such a good quality that can easily be compare with that produced by Afro-American legends...Panamanian Calypso is gratefully vindicated by Lord Cobra, probably the most important calypsonian of the Caribbean during the sixties and seventies. His version of "Rocombey" is just amazing. In the other hand, you can find original and exclusive Salsa Music.... In my opinion this is the Panamanian version of Buena Vista Social Club..... Don't miss it....
This is an incredible album.......2006-08-01
I was born in 1976, so i guess i missed all of this, i am from Panama and i can honestly say that this album blew my mind, being a music enthusiast i am always searching for seventies combos nacionales music and had heard some funk and calypsos from the country, but this pieces i didn't know existed until i bought this cd.
If you want to know just how good Panamenian music can be, this is where you should start.

Wow!!!.......2006-11-30
My husband heard a clip on the radio and he asked me to do a search. I could only find little snippets but I was curious. I went ahead and bought both albums and they sound awesome. Its just different from whats being played on the radio. This is the kind of music I would play at a dinner party (not a formal one). If you like music thats just different, this would be the way to go!
Swanky Latino.......2006-08-22
Love this CD! Perfect for a roof top party or just dancing in your kitchen.
Nice lounge beats. It's my new favorite. I like it so much that I will be ordering Charanga's other CD, Chicano Zen.
Groovy Electronica.......2005-11-01
Michael Ramos - the man behind Charanga Cakewalk - is a talented musician and producer who incorporates elements of cumbia, Latin percussions, and traditional Mexican grooves into dynamic cutting-edge electronica. Lotería de la Cumbia Lounge features 13 cuts that shift from the acoustic sounds of Spanish guitars, cellos, and accordions, to the spicy electronic pulses of the keyboards, creating the feel of a funky Latin lounge. This music is, I dare say, what a mix of Juana Molina, Kinky, and Aterciopelados would probably sound like. Sort of. To decide for yourself, check out "La Negra Celina," a groovy electronica-infused Colombian cumbia.
Can't stop playing it!.......2005-09-29
Man, is this a winner! A nice updated contemporary loungy Cumbia, at times with echos of 50s & 60s Cha Cha and at other times sounding slightly of Manu Chau, but truly unique all the same. Great soundtrack for art openings, funky retail joints and eateries, galleries, your living room, your car, anywhere. Just buy it, you'll never want to take it out of your CD player... .

Leave it to a British band to combine Latin rhythms, Jamaican mento, and ska beats, all dressed in retro zoot suits. The group is fronted by Cuban vocalist Ben Billy and London-born singer Nathan "Natty Bo" Lerner, with Jamaican trumpeter Eddie "Tan Tan" Thornton, Japanese saxophonist Megumi Mesaku, and Havana bassist Ray Crespo. For the most part, the music is a surprising melange of Beny More-type vocals and upbeat ska rhythms made famous by The Skatalites, as evidenced by the snappy instrumental "Jezebel," the hypnotizing mid-tempo "Soy Campesino," and the humorous title track. Also included are the Colombian cumbia "Tungarara" and Miguelito Valdes' "Babalu." Before purists attach the gimmick flag to the ensemble's second CD, they should please note that a few of the creators of ska were born in Cuba, and since African descendants are the prime creators of Caribbean music, this effort represents a reunion of kindred rhythms. --Eugene Holley, Jr.
Album Description
Ska Cubano takes classic Jamaican ska, blends it with Afro-Cuban son and salsa, throws in some retro swing and Colombian cumbia for spice, and creates a magic musical concoction that will get your feet moving and your hips shaking.
The UK world music magazine Songlines voted "Ay Caramba" one of the top 10 world music releases of the year, saying the record is, "A triumph. Remaining seated is not an option." Mojo magazine exclaimed the album, "Will have you on your feet before you've had time to consider the whys and wherefores."
Ska Cubano's "Ay Caramba!" is the first release from the new record label Cumbancha, which was founded by the long-time head of A&R and music research at the popular world music label Putumayo.

"Ay Caramba " is Good!.......2006-09-26
While traveling from Marrakech to Agadir my wife had the Moroccan radio station on, we noticed that the song playing was in English with a Latin beat, after the song was over the DJ announced it as "SKA CUBANO", what impressed me was that the singer sounded like the late Cuban singer Beny More! Later that night while staying in the Agadir Beach Club we heard the song again. We approach the DJ and he informed us that it was a recording from an English man and a Cuban singer who called themselves the SKA CUBANO. I was amazed when I heard the remaining songs it was fascinating. We danced all night to the music, and all the people seem to like the sound. Cumbia, Jamaican Ska, Jazz, and Cuban music altogether sounded great. My favorites are Soy Campesino, Tabu, and Istanbul. All the songs are very good and the back up band is outrageously good. Buy it and experience the excellent combination of this CD. My Mediterranean girl insisted that I write a review. Check it out on the web-site and listen to the songs.
An exciting blend of Caribbean musical cultures.......2006-08-13
Ay Caramba! is the musical creation of a UK/Cuba collaboration called Ska Cubano, which blends the bouncy ska beat that once took Jamaica by storm in the 1960s with Cuban cultural music. The result is an album with "hand-clapping" songs, rousing rhythm, and a diverse mixture of lively styles. An exciting blend of Caribbean musical cultures, Ay Caramba! is not to be missed. Tracks include Soy Campesino (3:42); Tabu (3:32); Oye Company Juan (3:35); No Me Desesperes (3:35); Big Bamboo (2:59); Tungarara (3:50); Cachita (4:31); Istanbul Not Constantinople (2:34); Marianao (3:51); Chispa tren (3:22); Jezebel (3:20); Bobine (4:56); Cumbia en Do Menor (4:41); and the title piece, Ay Caramba! (3:02).
A musical style that should have been.......2006-07-25
The fact that the label this artist records on is associated with Putumayo is what initially drew me to it. One listen to the samples and I knew I had to add this to my collection.
If you aren't dancing after a few bars of the first track, best go see the doctor because either your ears don't work right or your rhythm bone is broke!

The difinitive single disc Cumbia colelction available & in print.......2005-10-22
There are by far difinitive single disc collections that feature Cumbia's from Columbia from the 1950's, however thsoe are next to impossible to find in the USA, so thsi collection is the best and easiest to locate. If you want to go back and investigate the roots of 50's Cumbia, you'll have to search out bootlegs from Colombia and Mexico. This cd features some original versions of popualr Cumbis's and some are vintagem however there is a variety, and the music is tropical, and great for dancing, and livening up parties. The rhythms and percussions(congas) are irresistable. There is an almost hypnoctic sound to Cumbias, they are very addicting, you will dance when this cd goes in the player. A great cd!
Muy sobroso Cumbias de Colombia!!!.......2005-10-22
These are the hottest Cumbias from Colombia. Great rhythms, spicy percussions, and simply fun party and dancing music. A variety of bands are sampled here, mostly well known in Colombia, all on the legendary discos Fuentes label. All the bands are exellent, and they are all well known among fans of tropical music in South & Centro America.
These really are classic recordings, and they are meant for dancing and fiesta. So put your dancing shoes on, and get ready for some percussion filled fiery(muy picante)Cumbias!!!
A pleasing cd of some hard driving danceable Cumbias.......2005-10-21
If this cd of the best Cumbias from Colombia doesn't satisfy you, no Cumbia cd ever will! This is top notch, 1st class danceable Cumbia directly from Colombia. All the great bands including Sonora Dinamita are on here, and even though the collection doesn't go as far back into the 50's & 60's, it gives a good idea of a spicier less commercial sounding Cumbia, these bands do NOT use any synthesizers, it's al lreal percussion baby! GREAT STUFF! Vamos a bailar!
Clasica Cumbias de Colombia.......2005-10-20
OK so maybe these are not "clasico" in teh sense of being from the 1950's, but they are classic versions of some good authentic Cumbia de Colombia. This cd is as good as any, if not better. There are no synthesized instruments like many of teh modern Sonideros, these are all real musicians and great percussionists. Everything on the great Discos Fuentes label is generally good, and un-synthesized. These sides are MUY TROPICAL, and very exotic(& sound very 1950's) and are gaurenteed to liven up your next party waether you are Latin or gavacho! In fact the rhytms are Cumbia, but there are more touches of Sun Montuno, Salsa, and other forms of tropical mixed in, for a more varied flavor. Muy sobroso!!!
Buyer beware!!!!.......2005-09-14
The songs are great but where are all the instruments? If you dont care that they've been all replaced by synthesizers on this CD or claim you can't tell the difference, then by all means- disfrute!

If you like salsa this is a must have CD.......2001-08-16
In my opinion Fruko y sus tesos is the best salsa group ever.In the past they were on colombia's top charts. They have salsa'a greatest classics such as El preso wich is a nice song telling you about the feeling to be locked in a cell with no contact with other people, and a great song to dance to.And El patillero a great song about a watermelon seller. If you like Fruko y sus tesos I suggest you checkout Joe arroyo and groupo niche they also are big one's in colombia.
Great Sample of Colombian Salsa.......2000-07-12
Fruco y sus Tesos were on the best Colombian salsa recording groups back in the 70's. Their music filled every household and was loudly played at every party. (If you like this CD, you should check out any of Joe Arroyo's recordings - the group's main vocalist). This CD is full of vibrant music. It includes the group's best recordings: El Prisionero (a sad but well done song), El Patillero (a funny story about a street vendor), and El Cocinero Mayor (it will make you hungry!). Actually, every song in this CD sounds fantastic! If you grew up in Colombia, this CD will bring back your younger years. If you did not grow up in Colombia, this CD will make you dance even if you didn't think you couldn't dance!. Fruco y sus Tesos is a MUST have in any CD library.
Tropical Music Lover's Dream.......2000-05-13
If you've never heard of Julio Ernesto Estrada Rincon, aka "Fruko," you have missed out on one of Columbia's masters. A musician, bandleader, composer and arranger he has helped shape the careers of many Latino international stars including "Sonora Dinamita". This guy is a legend and rightfully so. His music is about Columbia and the wonderful dance music that is played there, including Mambo, Pachanga and Salsa. This is happy music that takes twists and turns weaving tales of lovers' deceits and the hardships that life can throw your way. Like most Greatest Hits packages this has most of his best music. The problem is his career has spanned nearly three decades so another volume has been added! The massive hit "El Preso"(The Prisoner) was a hit all over Latin America and tells the feelings someone locked up has with death awaiting him. Depressing subject but a great dance tune or just listening to for that matter. "El Pantillero" (Watermellon Seller) is about a vendor's hardships encountered on a bad day. Here the subject matter is treated humorously, but it doesn't matter what these guys sing about as the catch is the beat and smokey vocals. If you like poly-rhythmic percussion, horns and fabulous vocals set to a sizzling Latin beat. This is a must have CD. Great high energy music that does not allow one to sit still. A great introduction to one of the best musicians (plays piano, guitar and bass) to come out of Medillin and arrange some of the most soulful music for the world to enjoy. If you like this, you may want to find some of the original CD's, although they are hard to find in some markets. A superb collection for fans and novices alike.

Latin America has produced dozens of brilliant female singers and composers, including trail-blazers like Violetta Parra, Elis Regina, Soledad Bravo and Mecedes Sosa, to mention only a few. The present generation is also shaping up nicely. There are more women bandleaders than ever before, firmly in charge of their own talent, free to choose their material and back-up players without interference. As they so often do, Putumayo has supplied a short-list of emerging stars; the voices heard on this album are uniformly splendid and worthy of deeper exploration. But there are a few stand-outs: Brazilian Mônica Salmaso's creamy dark voice makes a strong impression, as does Chilean chanteuse Jacqueline Fuentes's plaintive, fado-like mezzo and Lhasa's limpidly nostalgic Mexican ranchera. Some may cavil at yet another gender-based compilation. But they should consider that male-dominated equivalents have existed since the dawn of the recorded era; they were just not labeled as such. --Christina Roden
Album Description
Women of Latin America features exquisite and lyrical music by many of Latin America's greatest female artists.
Customer Reviews:
Super addictive music.......2007-03-08
The voices and songs of these women haunt you way after you've turned off the CD with incredible melodies and instrumental backups. I would buy one for all of my women friends for Women's Day, today!
Muy Hermosa! .......2005-05-27
Women of Latin America is truly a sweet treasure. This is the first album that i have bought from this series. I am very glad i did. Each artists from this CD exemplifies a mood in their own way. At times sensual to haunting, sad, and hopeful, these artists truly are talented, beautiful, and powerful. I wish artists like these had more praise and attention than the artists these days that are nothing more but entertainers using just sex appeal to be noticed. This is what real music is about, even when you don't know a single word from the lyrics! I know Spanish pretty well, and im telling you, even the lyrics are "muy hermosa" and just incredible. This is an album worth having if you truly appreciate the passion and beauty of the Spanish language, and beautiful Latin American woman. Gozar de la musica de vida!
Vocal Prowess meets diverse styles.......2004-11-18
The lovely women of Latin America profiled in WOMEN OF LATIN AMERICA were chosen for their vocal prowess, their diverse styles, and their ability to appeal across cultures to a wide audience outside of as well as within Latin America.
From Susana Baca to Lila Downs and Lhasa, Mexico to Columbia, WOMEN OF LATIN AMERICA is a recommended, diverse and lovely pick.
Epitome of Feminine Vocal Grace .......2004-11-12
What a perfect intro CD to listeners new to Latin songs performed by some of the greatest female vocalists! The multifarious selection in the CD exposes the listeners to the rich spectrum of melodious, soothing, and sensual musical gifts that those female artists share with the rest of world with their grace. This CD also serves as a perfect ramification tool to deepen one's appreciation of any of the female vocalists listed. I like all of them and intend to purchase each vocalist's individual CD to further my understanding of her musical style and philosophy.
Mesmerizing.......2004-10-30
These vocalists and the songs they sing are exquisite works of art. Each voice is distinctively rich and though I do not speak Spanish the words and rythms convey their own poetry,
