Editorial Reviews
From Jazziz
Guitarist Bruce Arnold's trio puts a human face on the frequently austere visage of twelve-tone music with this warm, intimate album. Arnold maps out all the dodecaphonic particulars of each tune in the liner-notes, but theory aside, the end results are marvelously coherent performances that put a unique spin on standard jazz.

For instance, on the ballad "Reflection," Arnold's tightly constructed solo is both lyrical and true to the tune's twelve-tone structure. The blues nestles among the thorny outlines of "A Few Dozen," grounding the soaring, jagged trajectory of Arnold's lines. On "Broadway Y2K," the confluence of Afro-Cuban clavé rhythm and the unresolved tensions of twelve-tone melodies propels Arnold through a wonderfully nervous and unsettled solo with plenty of heat and grit.

Bassist Ratzo Harris and drummer Tony Moreno play big parts in the success of the album. Harris says a lot with just a few well-placed notes, and Moreno is a master of melodic color and rhythmic indirections. All three listen and mesh together as a unit that can float through ethereal tone poems one minute, and lock into a swinging groove the next. Somewhere in heaven, an approving Arnold Schoenberg must be tapping his foot to this trio's heady brew of jazz and serialism.

Product Description
On his latest CD, "A Few Dozen" (MSK112), guitarist and composer Bruce Arnold presents a tightly knit set of tracks based on twentieth century classical structures, that run from upbeat swing to lyrical ballads to rumba clave. In addition, the music is enriched by electronic sounds which create atmosphere and orchestral density. In on the fun and rounding out the trio are Ratzo B. Harris on acoustic bass and Tony Moreno on percussion and drums. Arnold writes, "The more I listened to the works of various masters, the more I felt that the elements they were working with could refresh and expand the possibilities of jazz."

I am so glad I got this CD. It is rare to hear Jazz go in a new direction. The compositional vision on this recording is revolutionary. Fans of Andrew Hill, Mcoy Tyner, Steve Topping and Bartok would love this CD.

The Bruce Arnold Trio proves that creativity over "commercial bliss" produces great music. If you dig the Clusone Trio, Scofield and Frisell, you'll dig this CD. All the tracks are strong, especially "Dialog", "7th Street" and "A Few Dozen"
