5 out of 5 stars new take on classic beatles sound.......2006-12-19

This CD just makes me want to sing along. The songs are beautifully constructed and well matched to the individual artist's strengths.

    5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-09-24

If you love a new spin on the classics of rock n roll or just a huge beatles fan this is the cd for you! I have to say my favorite songs of the cd include The Black Crow's rendition of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Ben Harper's cover of Strawberry Fields Forever and Eddie Vedder's cover of Youve Got To Hide Your Love Away. But to be honest every song is a jewel even more so when you have seen the movie. My advice see the movie first and then get the cd so that you can remember the touching moments that happened while your favorite song is playing.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music, Great artists!.......2007-05-10

I was lucky enough to attend this historic concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London and it was an amazing night of music I will never forget. This was an very interesting variety of mainly British artists who performed these Bacharach/David songs with style and enthusiasm. The standout performances were Petula Clark (wish she would have recorded even more Bacharach/David songs on her albums), Elvis Costello, Dionne Warwick (what Bacharach/David tribute is complete without her), Paul Carrack, and Brian Conley (a big West End and UK TV star), and Brian Kennedy (discovered by Van Morrison and the vocalist for Riverdance on Broadway). A must for fans of Bacharach/David songs.

      3 out of 5 stars A Jolly Goodtime..........2006-05-21

This live London, Royal Albert Hall, June 2000 concert tribute recording is not the conventional type. It is comprised mostly of Brits performing uncharacteristcally various Bacharach-David selections. Petula Clark, Dionne Warwick, and Burt Bacharach himself are the anchor for the program. Elvis Costello gives a sensitive take on " I Just Don't No What To Do With Myself" that underated song of heartbreak after a break up. Irish singer Brian Kennedy does a good low key job on the supportive ballad "Reach Out For Me" As much as Yazz tries she can't match Dionne Warwick with "Do You Know The Way to San Jose" a few tracks down the disc. A couple of the interpretors weren't even born when Burt was in his hay day. This kind of makes it interesting for the overall rating of this CD. British TV star Brian Conley does a luke-warm version(when compared to Tom Jones)on "Whats New Pussycat?". He fares better on "24 Hours to Tulsa"! When your not totally familiar with the performers on such an album of American Pop classics; the whole can be compared to just nicely done karaoke. The anonymous recording is first rate. Minimal audience noise. Some brief but helpful notes on the performers are included.

3 out of 5 stars Hit or miss collection.......2003-04-21

This live album recorded at the Royal Albert Hall in London gathers a large group of performers to celebrate the amazing Bacharach and David catalog. With the mix of artists, the results vary wildly, but when it's good, it's very good. High points include the incomparable Irish singer Brian Kennedy, who creates an absolutely shimmering version of "Reach Out For Me;" soul singer Paul Carrack, bourbon smooth on "This Guy's in Love With You;" and Petula Clark, who lends a distinct theatricality to three cuts here. Those three artists do outstanding work, making the cuts sound like their own rather than trying to copy the original vocals.

Some of the other tracks just lie there, including two by Brian Conley (he sounds like a third-rate Tom Jones) and Kenny Lynch, who just can't swing on "Wives and Lovers." Even Dionne Warwick, who gets three cuts here, doesn't seem to be in particularly good voice. The overall result is uneven -- there are better Bacharach compilations out there -- but this disc does have its moments.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Mcdonald \ Motown distant lover.......2003-11-05

Michael McDonald has proved himself on this song. His own touch just made the song so moving and in many ways better than the original by Marvin Gaye. I have always loved his music from way back with the Doobies. Michael has really out done himself on this entire cd. With the sexy sax, strong bass, his smooth and soft touches of the piano and his raspy yet sexy voice really makes this motown cd his very own. He has proved that he has the voice to sing any type of music and make it a hit....

4 out of 5 stars Good comeback CD for Michael McDonald.......2003-07-18

Although I can think of other Motown songs that I would have substituted for some of the songs on this CD, the more I listen to this the more I appreciate what Michael McD has done. "I Heard it Through the Grapevine", "I Believe (When I Fall in Love)", "All in Love is Fair", "I Want You" and "Distant Lover" are excellent versions that Mike has given his own special touch. The gem of the CD though is "Too High" (only found on the import CD as a bonus track). This is far and away the best track on the disc. It's a very good CD and will bring back many fond memories of these great songs of yesteryear. I hope that it's very successful and that Mike decides to do Motown #2 and include: I Can't Help Myself; I'll Be Doggone; Hitch Hike; Pretty Little Baby; Come See About Me; When the Lovelight Starts Shining...; What's Going On; Shake Me, Wake Me (When it's over..) and others.... This CD is worth your money!

5 out of 5 stars Michael McDonald is phenomenal on Motown.......2003-06-25

Please don't believe that "a music fan" would know better than McDonald himself which songs he should chose to sing. This is a really wonderful, beautiful cd! NPR's Bob Edwards recently did an interview with McDonald on Motown (broadcasted on 6/24). Check out ...
to read up and listen to McDonald playing away some of the Motown songs in the NPR studio. It's fantastic stuff. Michael McDonald has one of the most beautiful voices of all time. This is a great cd to chill out with and musically spoken it is absolutely sound. Of course everything depends on personal taste, but people who like soul/jazz (and maybe have never heard Michael before), give it a try! You will not be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Set.......2003-06-12

Michael Mcdonald still has the Chops at knocking out Songs. His Voice works well with most of the songs here.He adds His Own touch to many of the tracks here.He has never gotten that One Solo Album to Fully Showcase His whole Range.but this Album comes pretty close at sealing the Deal.He still has One of the Baddest Flows in the Whole Industry still to me.

      5 out of 5 stars Right On!!.......2003-05-30

The man did it again!! He captures Motown like no other. I only wish this could have been a two-disc collaboration. McD just gets better as the years pass.

It says it all in the subtext. Music by Bla Bla Bla Bla - NO music by Frank Zappa. NO music even remotely resembling his. It sounds like a bad imitation of what his music might sound like to someone who has only heard Gregorry Pekkary. It is too full of silly sound effects and bad orchestration. To an outside, it would seem that Frank Zappa must have composed only cartoon music. And the vocalist is horrible! Don't quit your day job dude! And don't YOU buy this excuse of a tribute album~!!!

If you like sabbath, and you like the other bands, you really should pick up this one. Now THIS is what a tribute should really be like. Without a doubt, the best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal bands that ever existed have put together a tribute to the one that started it all.

In fact, no offense to anyone, but some of the stuff is even BETTER than Black Sabbath's originals!! Click 'Buy', you won't regret it.

2 out of 5 stars Stillbirth in Black.......2001-03-28

Being a major Black Sabbath fan, I thought this album would be a good way to hear all those great classic songs in a new light. Sort of like a hamburger lover going to Burger King instead of the same old Mcdonalds in order to get something familiar done in a slightly different way. Instead, I had the opportunity to learn all about the futility of the tribute album. What's the point? It's all fine and good for these bands to express their love for one of their early influences and promote themselves all at the same time, but please don't do it at my expense. The current popularity of the tribute album reminds me of the "unplugged" fad of the early '90s. Making it all acoustic just for a different sound (and to prove that you know how to play, as though anyone cares)... The best that can be said is that all of these bands bring something of value to the songs and I was able to listen to this one about two or three times before it wore thin, which is better than none. Yes, people like Ozzy and Bill Ward play on some tracks but what does that matter? I suppose it could make some decent background music for a noisy get together of metalheads but beyond that, stick to the originals. This is the album that taught me never to buy a tribute album again. Paying extra for an import just adds injury to insult.

3 out of 5 stars Some Moving Moments, Lots Of Dead Weight. .......2007-01-03

In Latin America the past is alive and vibrant, music, poetry and folklore keep the memory alive of titanic figures such as Fidel Castro, Simon Bolivar, Che Guevara and Salvador Allende. So it is no surprise that we have a tribue album to Allende, the elected president of Chile who was murdered during a vicious September 11, 1973 coup lead by general Augusto Pinochet who became the country's dictator and inaugurated a reign of terror and oppression for almost 20 years. The result is a work with a lot of emotional truth, some moving moments, but a lot of dead weight. Most of the material contributed is by Angel Parra, who obviously admires Allende deeply and feels for his country's long night of totalitarism, but he's strongest contribution are actually the lyrics he wrote for a featured rap song titled "Allende Presidente" which with fiery prose describes the national feeling in Chile by many that Allende's presidency was a time of revolution and hope dashed by the evil mechanisms of capitalist wolves lead by the Nixon White House and CIA (there is strong evidence that Nixon and Henry Kissinger sponsored the coup). The song even features a wink at Chilean composer Victor Jara with the inclusion of lyrics from his famous "El Aparecido," a song written upon the occasion of Che's sudden appearance in Bolivia in the 60s. The rest of the album drags with some Parra compositions that feel like quiet illuminations and nothing more, he has a few wonderful moments of folkish reflection that allow us to feel Chilean music. Another valuable feature of this CD is the complete speech Salvador Allende broadcasted on Chilean radio with Pinochet's warplanes bombing the presidential palace in the background. It is a moving, powerful testament to the spirit of Allende as he praises the workers of his country and promises that the long night of injustice will one day pass. The best song on the album is Victor Jara's "Manifiesto," a moving piece full of atmosphere and beauty. Jara was an activist singer in Chile who was tortured and killed by Pinochet's men soon after the coup took place. "Venceremos" is not the tribute album Salvador Allende deserves, for a better example of how to acknowledge a martyr I recommend "El Che Vive," but it has some material worth checking out, at least to join in the dissident chorus that demands change not just in Chile, but everywhere.
