If the purpose of the three volumes of Smooth Grooves: Smooth Jazz was to give a wide overview of the music, the good folks at Rhino Records got it partially right. Volume One and Volume Two represent a time when those pioneering radio programmers had to choose from whatever contemporary jazz musicians were putting out on the musicians' own terms. Volume Three touts what smooth jazz has become, a bland, corporate expanse of pop grooves topped by simple lines played without emotion. The main culprits are Spyro Gyra, Hiroshima, and Najee, all three of whom are represented in this collection. Smooth-jazz trivia buffs are more likely to have fun with the list of artists on this set than with the actual music. Included are the Jeff Lorber Fusion, the group that gave the world Kenny G; Caldera, the group that spawned the duo Strunz & Farah; and Roy Haynes's "Water Children," surely the bebop veteran's only tune to be considered smooth jazz. Without the brilliant David Sanborn-Marcus Miller collaboration "Let's Just Say Goodbye" and Billy Cobham's cover of "Take It to the Sky," Volume Three of Smooth Grooves is stale music just hanging there. --Mark Ruffin

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite's in the series.......2006-12-11

Smooth Grooves: A Sensual Collection, Vol. 3 continues a great trend in the series of providing sensual listening experiences. The listener is a hit with a quadruple TKO with the first four tracks on the CD. First you get the extended mix of Float On by The Floaters. The song is eleven minutes and 49 seconds of slow jam bliss. The second song You Are My Starship by Norman Connors is another winner as is # 3. Voyage To Atlantis by The Isley Brothers . Track 4. 'Cause I Love You by Lenny Williams has become an everlasting slow jam that is one of the most heartfelt songs a man ever sung to a woman. Two of my other tracks on the CD are # 10 Something He Can Feel by Aretha Franklin & # 12 You Don't Have To Cry by Rene & Angela. Something He Can Feel" is a startling showcase for Curtis Mayfield's empathetic skills (he said that he tried to imagine how a woman feels when she loves a man) and serves as one of Franklin's best '70s sides while You Don't Have To Cry showcases everlasting love.

5 out of 5 stars A Must.......2000-06-20

Terrific, happy, upbeat jazzy pieces here. I love this CD!!
Great for spring cleaning!! Perfect for outdoor barbecues and pool parties....It adjusts the attitude to be friendly and enjoy the moment!
I highly recommend this collection of music. Zuma Beach is my favorite. Do yourself a favor and add this to whatever music collection you have. It's GREAT !!!

5 out of 5 stars Smooth and Upbeat.......2001-12-24

Very nice collection of smooth, upbeat, instrumental music. I enjoyed every tune on the disc - quite a bit different than run-of-the-mill "light" jazz. Check out Shilts and Natural High while you're out for a weekend drive. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Pulsating Grooves Vol 3-Solid.......2006-03-15

I agree- "worth the price for Politics of Dancing"
Surprisingly to me the other artists have excellent remix work done for their tracks, most which I haven't heard before. Especially "Catch Me I'm Falling", "Strut", all are worthy of the CD title. This is the best of the series. Treat for the headphones.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars As smooth as could be..........2006-04-11

This is REAL music--MUSIC that will nourish your heart, soul and spirit. Unlike today's watered-down and soul-less "Urban Contemporary"v souns this is great music from beginning to end. The songs by Cheryl Lynn, The Jones Girls, Rodney Franklin and Peabo Bryson are sure to please.

5 out of 5 stars A great investment!!!.......2005-08-19

I have the first three volumes, but this is by far the best. I have had it in my car since the first day, and it has been in my cd player every day since then!!! I can not get enough of this cd, it is well worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent compilation........2000-02-19

This tryptich is well worth spending your money on. It is a great compilation of the finest and styliest music that was en vogue in the 70 s and 80 s. I bought this one because I actually have most of the songs on the other two, and because I wanted to listen to the "Nights over Egypt" song performed in its original version (Incognito has done its own version in its latest "No time like the future"). You will also find one of the greatest songs from the Ohio Players (one of the emblematic bands of what I call "heavy funk", playing it cool here), a great song from the late Minnie Ripperton, two extraordinary tracks from Rodney Franklin (Howard Smith on vocals sounding just like Al Jarreau) and Ronnie Laws. Plus the mythical "the lady wants to know", from one of Michael Franks's best albums. The sleeve reminds the "I want you" (Marvin Gaye), and there is a lot of interesting information inside the booklet.

If you like soft sounds, high quality things that were done 20 years ago, these three albums are for you and will help you to discover or rediscover artists and sounds from that period.
