Guitarist and vocalist Keb' Mo' seems to be continuing in the direction suggested by his previous album, Just Like You, with this release. That is to say, mixed in with the country-blues style that dominated his self-titled debut are elements of soul, R&B, and rock (the opening "Muddy Water" sounds, in Keb' Mo's hands, a great deal like the Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Woman"). When this works, as it does on Slow Down's title track, it works very, very well. Some of the ballads, though, sound a little bland, and when the album returns to the tight, rock-inflected "Soon As I Get Paid" or the funky "A Letter to Tracy," it's refreshing. The real treats, however, come late in the album. With "Love in Vain" and "God Trying to Get Your Attention," Mo' gets down to the roots, and the sheer simplicity of the closing "I'm Telling You Now" is nothing short of beautiful, allowing Mo's considerable talent as a singer and guitarist to shine through. --Genevieve Williams

Can't Slow Down is probably Lionel Richie's best solo album, full of songs that would become hits--"All Night Long (All Night)," "Running with the Night," "Penny Lover," and "Hello." Like all of Richie's best music, the vocals are spare and the choruses inviting, with each track falling somewhere between straight-up pop and smoochy R&B. --Courtney Kemp

Most of this set was recorded for LP in 1978, but Leo Smit returned to the studios in 1993 to add some recently discovered short pieces. Smit, a friend of Copland and a composer himself, plays all of Copland's piano music with great comprehension. He sustains the flow throughout the difficult half-hour Piano Fantasy, though he doesn't create as much excitement in the Piano Variations as the composer did in 1935 on 78s (now on Pearl GEMM CD 9279). Much of Copland's piano music is occasional works or pieces for students, but the major works in the set make it well worth hearing. --Leslie Gerber

                Album Description

With the assistance of a crack band of Boston rockers and some very special guests, celebrated baseball commentator and columnist Peter Gammons (ESPN, The Boston Globe, Sports Illustrated) trades in his typewriter for a Stratocaster and delivers a rousing set of vintage classics, originals, and rock obscurities - all to benefit Theo and Paul Epstein's Foundation to be Named Later, a charity which raises funds and awareness for non-profit agencies serving disadvantaged youth in the Greater Boston area. Gammons's ruggedly soulful vocals and guitar are featured alongside cameos from Red Sox G.M. Theo Epstein, Juliana Hatfield, George Thorogood, Little Feat's Paul Barrere, Kay Hanley, and an all-star chorus consisting of Red Sox players Jonathan Papelbon, Kevin Youkilis, Trot Nixon, Lenny DiNardo and Tim Wakefield, former Red Sox pitcher Bronson Arroyo, and NESN broadcaster Don Orsillo

Like Joe Ely, Lucinda Williams, and Dave Alvin, the BoDeans suffer in the peculiar purgatory of being loved by critics and fellow musicians and pretty much ignored by the public at large. Neither side of that equation is likely to change with Go Slow Down, an album whose rocking hooks and soulful singing are likely to make music insiders salivate with pleasure and whose old-fashioned, homemade rock and roll sound is likely to leave radio and MTV cold. This is an album so good that it justifies the critics' constant comparisons of the BoDeans to Creedence and the Band, but this is not a friendly market for Creedence and Band reincarnations. --Geoffrey Himes
