Pete McCann is one of several jazz guitarists reaching critical acclaim and creative high points in the 1990s. His style incorporates elements of the Sonny Sharrock and James "Blood" Ulmer electric avant-garde but also a heap of influences traceable to guitarists as distinct as Jim Hall and Bill Frisell. McCann eases between quiet-to-soaring dynamic levels as surely as he rips into scrambly, distortion-tinged outbursts. His band is topnotch all the way, with drummer Matt Wilson giving the rhythms a sometimes hard pound and a sometimes slight prance the way Ed Blackwell did for Ornette Coleman's music. The subdued moments that show the guitarist's grace are here, especially on the opening to "Gone." But so too are the leaping free-bop excursions, which McCann seems expert at uncorking and letting pour. Based on this debut recording, Pete McCann's guitar is in full bloom and shows little sign of flagging. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:
Breathtaking Virtuosity!.......2007-04-07
Love the album! First heard a live performance of the Martino "A Set for Clarinet" while in college. This recording is as good, for sure! Also love Mr. Cohler's take on Wm. O. Smith's "Five Pieces for Clarinet Alone".
(I know Bill Smith personally, and I'm sure he loves it too!). Best of all though, is the Paganini "Molto Perpetuo". Superb circular breathing!
good but not flawless.......2003-11-22
I don't have any overwhelming complaints about this recording, but from a clarinetist's standpoint, there are a few detractions. I thought the use of vibrato was a bit overdone and definitely affected the tone in a less than positive way. The echo-y sound of the recording definitely helps gloss over some things, but it almost has the effect of a pianist who uses too much pedal. On pieces for solo clarinet, I'd really like to hear a good clear tone with more core to it, rather than a somewhat flighty sound that uses vibrato to maintain your interest.
Matters of taste aside, the technical facility was excellent, except for a few minor spots where the rhythmic consistency seemed a little shaky. Some of the pieces have a lot of rubato feel to them, and that's fine, but some of them clearly demand a steady pulse, and there are just a few minor places were you're not quite sure if it's still there (a couple places in the smith 5 pieces for clarinet for example). Pitch on the extreme registers was good, and most of the weird effects came across well.
All in all, I'd recommend this to any clarinet aficionados, but serious students would be advised to take the performance with a grain of salt (as I suppose could be said of any recordings really.)
Lovely.......2003-03-25
Every composition well-chosen, every performance well-played. The recording quality is clear with splendid presence.
The Paganini--wow! I've already moved the doleful Osborne to my frequent-listening shelf. It's unsurprising the Martino appeals to clarinetists: it's exciting and athletic, leaping over multiple octaves at a single bound! I also enjoyed Enland von Koch's alternatively playful and pensive "Monolog 3".
This is a fine collection of 20th century solo clarinet works. It's great to have them recorded. That they are so *well* recorded makes it all the sweeter.

One of greatest psychedelic bands of all times.......2005-11-03
The Red Crayola were one of the greatest psychedelic bands of the 1960s and probably of all times. They played extremely wild and cacophonous music that was decades ahead of its time. They predated Germany's expressionistic rock (Faust) and the American new wave (Pere Ubu). Their "freak outs" were closer to John Coltrane's free-jazz and to Jackson Pollock's abstract paintings than to rock and roll.
Their leader, Mayo Thompson, is a composer who ranks among the greatest living musicians (classical, jazz, rock). His revolutionary compositional style had few stable coordinates. His pieces float not because they are ethereal but because melody and rhythm are left "loose". They are organisms that rely on supporting skeletons that are falling apart as they move.
Thompson placed his art firmly in the iconoclastic tradition that Frank Zappa had just founded, and simply increased the amount and the speed of noise. Parable Of Arable Land (1967) is one of the milestones of rock music, a carousel of savage harmonic inventions/sabotages.
If you like the Brockett Hudson...........2005-09-22
Mayo Thompson and the first incarnation of the Red Krayola in collaboration with the communal, borderline cultish hippie assemblage the Familiar Ugly. Instrumentation that includes chainsaws, motorcycles, soda bottles, and even one person on matchsticks. Mayo Thompson, Rick Barthelme, and the handful of more traditional musicians (including appearances by the Thirteenth Floor Elevators' Roky Erickson), manage to provide some, albeit limited, cohesion to the caucophonous splendor, bringing some of the free-form freakouts dangerously close to the level of "song." The group was signed by International Artists in 1966 when Lelan Rogers witnessed a Krayola performance at an Austin, Texas, shopping mall. Rogers was more intrigued than impressed by the ragtag lot that "barely knew how to play their instruments." This album is the only surviving documentation of the Familiar Ugly era of the band; it is a slice of underground history and a savory morsel for all with a penchant for wierdness. Fans of the Brockett Hudson will adore this vanguard of avant-folk-psych.
High Tower of Weird.......2005-04-27
I was organizing my cd's the other day & had already finished when I had stumbled across "Parable of an Arable Land". I had forgotten to secure a space for the Red Krayola so I filed them after the Zombies. It seems fitting that they would be somewhat outside of the alphabet, because I know so few bands that were influenced primarily by themselves. No one sounded like them at the time, and come to think of it, no one really sounds like them now -- though you hear their influence. Most music on the fringes is drenched in melancholy or madness. I didn't detect either on this album, it seems joyfully detatched, resolutely/confidently weird. When I played the album it had the brief, but compelling effect of making every thing else I had ever heard sound corny. "Hmm?". It was the same reaction I had a few years ago when I played it, which was the same reaction after I first bought it. I think the album is like a treasure more than anything, one I don't want to spoil with over-listening & analysis. I never seem to have to play it more than once, then I file it away, this time a little past the "Z's" to be listened to again in a few years.
Red Crayola-'The Parable Of Arable Land'(Collectables).......2005-04-06
Originally released in 1967,as this is the long running band's very first effort.Highly under-appreciated 'experimental psych' in which as for the few other Red Crayola CD's I've heard, this one is probably the best.'The Parable...' employs weird and unconventional sounds of jugs, sticks, flutes, kazoos, etc.Hard to believe, but the band actually STILL exists today.Well,at least singer/songwriter Mayo Thompson is active with putting out new releases and touring occasionally.A couple of the tunes that I was sort of blown away with were "Free Form Freakout","Pink Stainless Tail" and "Transparent Radiation".Might be too strange for some.Line-up:Mayo Thompson-guitar&vocals,Steve Cunninghan-bass and Rick Barthelme-drums.Might appeal to fans of Skip Spence,Quicksilver Messenger Service,Pere Ubu,Syd Barrett and 13th Floor Elevators.Let your freak flag fly!

Brilliant.......2007-05-13
Brilliant imaginative psychedelia very much the invention of Mayo Thompson and others. I didn't expect the sound quality to be incredible so it is fine. I can hear the playing well.
Great music, nice packaging, horrible sound quality.......2007-02-25
The music here is great. But unfortunately this label thought it would be fine to master the albums from horribly scratchy vinyl, probably played back on a portable turntable and recorded with a microphone set up across the room. All loud passages are distorted, and cracks, pops and scratches are heard throughout.
These albums admittedly are not hi-fi recordings. But I can tell when something does not sound the way they should.
The Red Krayola release HURRICANE FIGHTER PLANE on Atom Records includes the same albums on 2 separate CDs, supposedly in much greater sound quality (and not sourced from vinyl). I will return this and buy that instead.

O.k., I confess to naivete' but the North Texas Wind Symphony seems to have outdone the Winds of the London Symphony e.g. compare Pageant on this CD with the version on the Naxos-produced CD. North Texas seems to resonate deeper in the percussion and the brass intonations seem a bit brighter. Regardless, I think it is important to study Persichetti's music primarily because of the timing of his wind band compositions i.e. 1950s. As I recall, this was the time that Fredric Fennel basically invented the wind ensemble venue. The contribution of this invention is observed in our high schools and colleges where the wind ensemble is the premier band. My favorite piece is Divertimento because it sounds 'contemporary' and, to me, 'contemporary' means exploration of the diversity of wind instruments and their intonations and enriched percussion.

Amazon.com essential recording
Mussorgsky's four songs known collectively as Songs and Dances of Death make up 20 minutes of the most intense storytelling in 19th-century song. At first, Hvorostovsky's voice seems almost too beautiful, his sound almost too youthful to fill out these narratives, but his concentration and breath control are so sensational that we realize what he's up to. He's spinning us seductively into the spooky world of these songs, where Death converses in turn with the mother of a dying child, a young girl, an old peasant, and dying soldiers; Hvorostovsky nicely changes his tone for each song. The rest of the CD is equally fine, with two arias from Anton Rubinstein's The Demon particularly compelling. Quite an adventure! --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
ravishing !.......2003-04-27
Out of my ever growing (15 recordings so far) Dmitri collection, this is one of the best, a cream of the crop CD, with a terrific selection of music, and the fabulous Siberian at his most intense and dramatic.
Recorded 9 years ago when he was 31, it is one of his earliest CDs, but from the start (listen to his amazing "Russian Romances" !), he sang with incredible maturity and vocal richness.
Valery Gergiev and the Kirov Orchestra provide perfect backing, with a good balance between orchestra and singer, lovely and lyrical for the melodious Tsar's Bride aria (my current favorite track), and with plenty of dazzle and muscle for the Moussorgsky pieces.
This is one of those CDs (and both Dmitri and Gergiev have a few of them), that captures the heart and soul of Russian music.
Russia's Best!.......2002-10-29
This is by far the most breathtaking interpretation of the Songs and Dances of Death by Mussorgsky you will ever hear! I have seen Hvorostovsky in concert twice and always yearn for more. His voice is just as incredible live. Every single aria on this disc is a jewell. You can feel the pathos and the agony of the Demon, the heartwrenching jelousy of Aleko, and the joyous abandonment of the singer in Nero. Hvorostovsky's voice is just as outstanding as Ghiurov's in his prime.
The choice of repertoire and Dmitri's interpretation makes this CD a must for those wishing to explore Russian opera. His impressive range allows him to sing at ease in both the baritone and bass tessitura. He will no doubt make an exciting Scarpia and an unforgettable Mephistophele (both Gounod's and Boito's)someday. I hope he considers these roles in the future!
The best russian performer.......2002-05-10
I want to say this: Dmitri is the best baritone in our days, but he is the best russian performer ever lived. You can hear all the fellings the song expresses, a beatiful, coloured voice with a magnificent sound. He is simply superb. The orchestra and the conductor are correct. Again, Dmitri is the most important presence in this Cd.
Dmitri at his darkest and most compelling.......2001-10-12
I couldn't agree more with Robert Levine and Stephen Ettinger's most informative reviews. Prior to purchasing this CD, I had read elsewhere that Hvorostovsky's upper register was in trouble on this album. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. Having now heard the album I can happily report that Dmitri's upper, middle AND lower registers are perfectly equalized, and I strongly urge any doubting critics to retire gracefully. For this is a magnificent album from one of the most exciting baritones of the last 25 years. It ranks alongside Hvorostovsky's CD of the Sviridov song cycle, Russia Cast Adrift, as a celebration of sheer individualism in singing. Both albums display the hallmarks of this wonderful singer - the dark and intensely concentrated sound, the extraordinary breath control and superb attention to the phrasing. Just 31 when he recorded the present CD, Hvorostovsky brings such insight to his singing that he puts most of his contemporaries to shame. This album demonstrates everything that great singing should be: dazzling vocalism combined with innate feeling for the words.
Always at his best in the Russian repertoire, Hvorostovsky has chosen this programme wisely. He covers a wide range of moods, starting out with the joyous Venetian's Song from Rimsky-Korsakov's Sadko, and moving through some highly melodic works from Borodin and Rubinstein before arriving at Rachmaninov's darkly compelling Ves' Tabar Spit from the opera Aleko. For the latter he employs a more sombre style than the lustier approach favoured by, say, Ghiaurov, but this sets the scene well for the Songs and Dances of Death that follow.
These are the showpieces of the album, and I have never heard them more memorably performed. The variety of colours in Hvorostovsky's voice are a revelation, but what makes these songs stand out is the way he manages to convey so many different characters and moods. I loved the humour of his drunken peasant in the Trepak, and at the same time was thrilled by the terrifying power of his Field Marshall in the final song. These are truly astonishing performances.
As always, Hvorostovsky is provided with great support from conductor Valery Gergiev, and the sound quality is remarkably warm and vibrant. An unforgettable release and a must-have for anyone who loves great singing.
Breathtaking!.......1999-11-24
This is my favorite Dmitri Hvorostovsky CD. Not only he included the famous Russian opera arias for baritone, but he also added the magnificent "Songs and Dances of Death" by Modeste Mussorgsky brilliantly arranged for orchestra by Dmitri Shostakovich. Originally, Mussorgsky composed this terrifying masterpiece for different voices singing each piece, i.e. one for bass, one for tenor, one for contralto. Shostakovich decided to arrange it for orchestra for the Prima Donna of Bolshoi and his good friend Galina Vishnevskaya. He also made the pieces grimmer, so to speak, with his booming rhythmic percussion and "ticking clock" strings. In her book, Galina Vishnevskaya contrasts Shostakovich's terror of death to Mussorgsky's faithful acceptance of it.
Hearing Dmitri sing "Songs and Dances" in his baritone key is somewhat of a revelation. Not having the benefit of soprano's flying vocal pyrotechnics, Dmitri chose to put all the terror he could muster in his singing. On "Trepak" he resorts to folk song's vivacity and in "Field Marchall" he sings the voice of Death with suffocating anger towards the living. The "Serenade" sparkles with warm seductive sound and "Lullaby" sounds as it is sang by two different voices. It is indeed spine-chilling.
The rest of the album is just as impressive. The Rimsky-Korsakov and Borodin selections are a part of Russian traditional baritone repertoire; Hvoristovsky approaches them with utmost seriousness and dedication. The Rubinstein and Rachmaninov arias are rare, the ones from "Demon" and "Aleko" used to be sang by basses or bass/baritones, for example Nicolai Ghiaurov and George London. But Dmitri is able to hit the low notes just fine, thereby fending off some critic's preposterous remarks about his lower range. Actually he manages to sound like a lyric basso, which is quite an accomplishment. And the breath control on "Na Vozdushnom Okeane" is nothing short of remarkable. Valery Gergiev brings his trademark intensity and imaginative reading to the music and the Kirov Orchestra is in top shape. Somehow I think that transposing the Mussorgsky selections for the baritone was his idea. Btw, Dmitri's singing idol, the great Fyodor Chaliapin recorded only "Trepak" out of the whole song cycle. Thus Dmitri's is, in a sense, finishing what Chaliapin had started. As always, the Philips sound is wonderful and spacious. The booklet is informative, but a serious listener may want to do some more research. Personally I longed for Cyrillic texts, but the translations are pretty accurate, so that those unfamiliar with Russian could get an overall understanding, which is absolutely essential for this fascinating material.

From the tumpet's more traditional role as a heralding instrument to circus-like acrobatics and lyrical expressiveness, these selections allow the listener to journey through the many colorful arenas of the modern trumpet.

Customer Reviews:
A Most Welcome Reissue of Persichetti Wind Band Music.......2006-05-12
The contents of this CD were originally issued on the Harmonia Mundi label about ten years ago. It was a treasurable issue then and its reappearance on a budget label is particularly welcome for those who don't own the older disc. Much of this music stands at the very center of essential American concert band music repertoire, along with his Symphony No. 6. Vincent Persichetti (1915-1987), whose polytonal and rhythmically alive music is presented here, had a particular talent for writing for combinations of winds, brass and percussion. Included on this well-filled disc are seven of the fourteen such works that he wrote. Divertimento for Band, Op. 42, Psalm for Band, Op. 53, and Pageant, Op. 59 are among the most-played of these works, but the much more complex and striking Parable for Band (Parable IX), Op. 121, one of the last things he wrote, is perhaps one of his most original works.
The music itself is performed beautifully by players of the London Symphony under the direction of American conductor, David Amos, long known for his recorded forays into forgotten or nearly-forgotten American music. One could not ask for more idiomatic performances. As someone who had many years ago played in performances of the Divertimento and the Psalm, this recording brought back warm memories. Naxos, which has just started a new series called 'Wind Band Classics,' has issued this as the second in what hopes will be an extensive list of recordings to come. A plus for this release is the knowledgeable booklet essay by the leading expert on the music of Persichetti, Walter Simmons.
Strongly recommended.

--Andrew Bartlett

great cd from a great new player.......2000-06-18
pete mccann is something else! i first saw him with warfields bigband .he knocked me out . completely original and groundbreaking! this disk is a must for any fan of new jazz guitar players. can't wait for the next one!
great debut.......1999-12-22
Listening to spinner.com, I kept hearing things I liked on the new jazz channel...It kept being "Parable" by Pete McCann. After a few weeks of hearing it, i finally clicked through to amazon and ended up buying 2 copies. The CD had an even wider range of styles than I heard on the internet radio. Great job, keep it up. Kudos to the sax players on the CD, they are great too, and Matt Wilson's drumming shines.
Pete McCann is destined for greatness........1999-04-16
'Parable' is for anyone who is into seeing what The Guitar can do. McCann is amazingly versatile but consistently strong in whichever style he chooses. I, personally, think he's as gifted as a composer as a player. Check this guy out.
I am prejudiced, I am his mother!.......1999-04-14
Having watched and listened to this guy progress since childhood, one has no idea the rewarding feeling that I have for his works. I often wished I could have been inside his head as some of the licks were flowing forth. Jazz is truly his own, as his father prefers Country, and I usually chose Classical.
