Donna de Lory has several solo albums out, but she's still best known as a back-up singer for Madonna, fleshing out choruses since the mid 1980s. There's more than a little bit of Madonna in De Lory's voice, at once fragile and vulnerable, yet still powerful, with a gospel-like yearning. On her own, De Lory has crafted artful pop on albums like Bliss and In the Glow, but she also tends toward the mystical and began incorporating Sanskrit mantras or Kirtans into her songs, a tact culminated on The Lover & the Beloved, a full-fledged Mantra journey. De Lory draws from the golden oldies of mantras, including "Hare Krishna," but revs them up with electronica beats, verse-chorus arrangements, multi-tracked vocals, and electronic textures sprinkled in with the sitars and tablas. Cameron Stone weaves his processed cello through De Lory's melodies and harmonium in serpentine rivulets, tying together the tablas of Girish Gambhira and the answering chants of Kirtan singer, Dave Stringer. Endowed with the materiel girl's sense of pop form and irresistible hooks, De Lory posits a confluence between pop and spiritual music, in which a repeated chorus has the same mantric effect as a chant. Her chants could be hymns to Krishna or a plea to a lover, but they are equally ecstatic and powerful. --John Diliberto

Album Description

These Sanskrit mantras bubble with a groove and atmosphere that takes tradition to heaven and back. Donna's voice resonates with ether and earth, beauty that asks you to join in, become one with the sound of deep celebration.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2007-06-26

This is a wonderful CD of chants that are both up to date and ancient at the same time. It is calming to the soul to listen to, and later in the day you will find youself chanting the words.....

5 out of 5 stars Soothing. Peaceful. .......2006-09-12

I love all these songs! Soothing and tranquil.

They last a long time which is perfect for use as background music while working or while chatting with friends.

It makes it easier to relax to the melody, let your cares float away as the music wraps around you.
It's one of my favorites, I'm so glad I took a chance and got this one:)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Soulful Yoga Music.......2006-03-18

Donna De Lory has a beautiful, soulful voice and her music is perfect to practice yoga to or to unwind and get into that zenlike spirit. I ordered the rest of her CDS.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant masterpiece.......2005-09-12

This album is a brilliant masterpiece. Extremely uncommon music, farly outrunning the present. A listener is experiencing a deep feeling of being, also as each piece here, so long, is being changed several times in movement and style. At this web page the short mp3 shows are only presented in one such a style and movement, more torrential but less oriental. The most varied piece is the last seventh: Govinda Jaya Jaya (Mac Quayle Mix). And what's more, the box for the CD is not the traditional plastic, but it is made quite else and I do not mean to disclose, how. For me it was an eye-opener and I wish you the same excitment. It is no lesser masterpiece than the music itself. So I recommend this album to everybody and thank the authors very much for this great experience. You're real masters.

5 out of 5 stars Just love it!.......2005-04-11

A lovely album. Donna brings a sense of creativity, melody and bkathi (devotion) to each of the songs. It starts with a catchy Ganapathi OM, continuing with the same catchiness with Om Namah Shivaya. He Ma Durga brings out the delicacy of her voice. I loved Govinda Jaya Jaya, which is ideal for a group chant that brings a lot of energy into the singing.

I found all the songs to be melodious. The lyrics are simple for anyone to remember easily. The tune is catchy and lingers on after listening. There is a nice blend of western and Indian instruments providing soothing background music. As in many Indian songs/chants, you will find repetition within each song, which is a nice thing. You probably will not notice it as it encourages you to remember the tune/song much easily.

I use this album in my Yoga classes regularly and come away humming for a long time. Just love it!

Prior to the breakthrough success of their second album, Vertigo, Groove Armada (Tom Findlay and Andy Cato) were better known as successful club DJs, plying their trade in clubs the length and breadth of England, from Tangled in Manchester to the End in London. For their first mix CD they eschew uptempo dance-floor tunes in favor of a far more laid-back repertoire--think "At the River" rather than "If Everybody Looked the Same." It's an eclectic mixture of classic and modern--from Barry White to Tears for Fears, stopping at all stations along the way. Unlike many of these kinds of compilations, there's not a duff track on here, and standouts like Al Green's "Light My Fire" and Tony D's "Piano Grand" make the cherry on top. Vertigo was justifiably lauded as the Best Chill-Out Album at the U.K.'s Ministry Magazine Awards in 1999; Back to Mine is a worthy heir to the throne. --Helen Marquis

5 out of 5 stars GA and BTM deliver again.......2006-06-04

Alot of my fellow reviewers and the general public should note that a main tenet of the Back to Mine series is that it is a reflection of influences and musical tastes of the artists. In the sleeve notes of one of the Back to Mine series (there are at least a dozen so named CDs) I read that it's all about what they'd play at their after-clubbing party back home on their vintage vinyls and what not.

Therefore you get alot of downbeat tracks and music that isn't necessarily what the artist would normally put out. The same holds true for this BTM release. Groove Armada are already masters of the chill beats, but they put in a twist for this assortment of their favourite tunes. A direct quote from the booklet that comes with the disc: "In compiling this album, we've worked at playing all these tunes at their original speed as they're all too special to be distorted."

What you are buying here isn't necessarily a Groove Armada album - though it's definitely got their flavour. What you are buying is a truly one-of-a-kind, stellar mix tape. Seriously. Still worth the purchase, even at the more expensive CD store prices.

4 out of 5 stars Best of the Back to Mine Series. Diverse music makes for perfect chill album.......2006-01-14

Having listened to several albums in the back to mine series, I have to say that Groove Armada's compilation is by far the best of the lot. Intergrating an incredibly diverse mix of musical genres and artists, GA creates a album that seamlessly transitions from one song to the next. Overall, this is a more soulful album than ambient techno, with offerings from Al Green, Barry White, and A Tribe Called Quest. As far as beats and tempos go, it's much more laid back than Everything But the Girl, The Orb, or Danny Tenaglia's versions. This is the perfect album for an evening in with close friends or a special someone, a laid back vibe with a red wine buzz, or something else that gets your mind open.

5 out of 5 stars This album is slick and kewl!.......2005-03-10

Not the best output from the band but slick and smooth nontheless. Some have accussed this album of being directionless but that rather misses the point, and almost misses the point of the ethos of this great band.
Here you have a mardi gras of dance cultures, soul, funk, R+B, rap, house and ambient chill with more than a foot in the camp of black and latino culture; make this distinctly different.
Not at all a misguided album, it's like a club night out in modern Harlem and the Bronx fused; very, very different and that is the rarified joy of Groove Armada.

3 out of 5 stars UNEVEN..........2004-09-23

Other than the opening track, the first third of this compilation gets off to a promising start with Barry White, is totally smokin' by the middle tracks, and whatever enthusiasm you had just dies by the time the backwoods blues version of "Light My Fire" rolls around (a real mood killer)... and it's all downhill from there. There's just no rhyme or reason to this compilation whatsoever - I shudder to think what these guys were like as deejays!

5 out of 5 stars About as good as ambient music gets........2004-05-25

I have bought this CD at least 5 times. Two of them are still in my custody (one worn and scratched to near oblivion), the rest, well, all given away reluctantly or borderline "stolen" by those that "have to have" this CD.

I entertain allot, this almost always makes rotation for pre-dinner appetizers, or post dinner games (of the board kind). I wouldn't do at dinner time because there are a handful of songs that are a bit too hard (this CD isn't 100% chillout, there are a handful of uptempo tracks). Nevertheless, this CD is a winner.

Their newer CD (Love Box) is excellent, but in my opinion not as good as this one. If you love the downtempo element of this CD, I'd recommend Air (the group), or Zero 7. If you like the uptempo aspect, I'd take a look at some cool Mushroom Jazz (like Mark Farina).

Hope this was helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Gonna to be a rock star.......2006-06-08

I owned Go for Broke first and this is not a carbon copy. Real talent does not rip off or re-hash existing sounds, riffs, melodies, and such. The variety of the sounds we get on this second album tells me that this guy's got some talent..

First of all this is more a 2k rock album and there seems to be less hip hop. GFB leaned heavily on a hip hop lyric delivery and had a more of a hip-hop theme to it. Kazzer's delivery here has a bit more "in your face" and the guitar riffs feel heaver, more pronounced, and tighter. There are some good guitar solos that are not on his first album.

Kazzer's vocal delivery is also more in line with what we're hearing on the radio today without the sticky sweet commercialism and without the ranting drone.

Most of the tracks are solid rock tunes. The ballads (if you can call them ballads) have a unique grooving quality that keeps them crossing over to cliche'.

You can tell this is a second album on a few of fronts. It's more polished, a bit tighter, certainly more mainstream (or maybe less cross over). If he keeps it up, and has a good promoter, he will no doubt see greater commercial success.

5 out of 5 stars Why hasn't anybody heard of this guy yet?.......2005-11-29

I've been watching the Speed channel's Sports Car Revolution for a few seasons, always loved their theme songs, "Fueled by Adrenaline" and "Pedal to the Metal" but just recently realized that Kazzer was not only a co-host on the show, but he is a rock star. I decided to take a chance on this one and I'm glad I did. Good stuff. So good that I immediatley bought his debut CD "Going for Broke" as well, though I'm slightly dissapointed with that one.

4 out of 5 stars Wayne's best work outside the Crusaders.......2003-10-03

Wayne Henderson's output since leaving the Crusaders in the mid-70's has been minimal, as he's mostly worked in R&B production. He did release a couple of very good solo albums in the late 60's, "Soul Sound System" and "People Get Ready", the latter of which was reissued on CD, though oddly bundled with free-jazzer Sonny Sharrock's "Black Woman". However, "Back to the Groove" (1992) finds Wayne, as might be expected, largely returning to the successful sound of the old group. Wilton Felder is onboard to recreate the trombone-sax combo of yester-year, and it's as welcome as fresh Gulf Coast breeze. Wayne, Wilton, guitarist Dwight Sills, keyboardists Bobby Lyle and Rob Mullins contribute rewarding solos. Most of the tunes are Henderson originals, except for Mullins "Lady In Waiting", the Miles Davis-Victor Feldman straight-ahead composition "Joshua", and the final track. Wayne closes the set with a fitting epilogue, a dreamy, almost a-capella, jazz choral rendition of the Bacharach-David classic "Alfie".

    Album Description

    >>

When I first heard these guys play at Huey's in Midtown Memphis, I became an instant fan. Their music was so fresh, yet obviously inspired by the three historic sites of soulful record-making in the South: Muscle Shoals, Memphis and New Orleans. There were choice cover tunes by the Meters, Allen Toussaint, Otis Redding, Al Green, the Band, Dylan, Marley and more that the group expertly arranged and made their own, along with clever, inventive, self-penned songs that truly were original. My first impression hasn't changed, just intensified.

Then and now what locks you immediately into their funky modus operandi is the Crescent City second line syncopation and in-the-pocket pops of Chad Gamble's drumming. Reinforcing this unceasing rhythmic flow is the crawling, pulsating, agile bass work of Will Lowrimore. Back to the bottom indeed. Al Gamble's keyboard work overlays it all with those cool vintage tones, percolating wah-wah intensity, organic vibrato swells, and tasteful, delectable soloing. To top it off, Art Edmaiston's sax work offers a cornucopia of righteous riffs that can blow a burning injection of bebopping jump into the mix and send this band into orbit. And everybody sings!

Back To The Bottom ups the ante in terms of creativity and expression. It is a fully realized work of studio artistry, where attention to detail and subtle production enhancements allow the songs' many facets and textures, as well as the consummate musicianship and genuine good vibes of this band, to shine through. And though the performances here are inspired, they skillfully avoid jamband excess.

If you are new to the GBB, this CD will be a revelation that grabs you from the get go. You'll soon find yourself head-bobbing, booty-shaking, and singing along while you feverishly try to find out when this combo will be playing at a tiki bar nearby. Repeated plays will reap evermore appreciation. As with all great music, these songs will take you somewhere special….so slip down Escape Alley to the winding banks of the Mississippi, discover the lair of the mythic Cadillactopus, and get Back To The Bottom with the Gamble Brothers Band. Southern living is good for you.

I saw this group play in St. Louis the first time about a year ago. This CD is elecrtifying!!! All of the members are obviously talented musicians, that's a given if you've ever seen them live. If you're a lover of great music this CD is a must! You'd never guess these dudes were of WASP descent if you heard them on the radio. More soul than James Brown and more funk than George Clinton combined with the musicianship of Steely Dan. This group should make it to stardom someday. Check out "Tiki Bar" and you'll be hooked instantly.

    4 out of 5 stars It's good for you!.......2003-10-31

Man o man o man. These guys have hit it on their second effort. If that first groove ("Record Store") doesn't grab you, you cannot be grabbed. Excellent cover of Randy Newman's "Little Criminals" accompanies some excellent groovy Memphis funky stuff. "Land of Soul" brings a Tipitina's backbeat to a Memphis state of mind - Otis, Rufus and Booker T - be proud!
