About the Artist
Pianist Steve Barta is a composer, author, producer and recording artist. Lending his talent to symphonic orchestras, jazz ensembles, and classically influenced solo piano, his original compositions reflect a great diversity of style. Hailed by jazz flutist Herbie Mann as "a curious blend of Aaron Copland and Antonio Carlos Jobim" Steve's signature style encompasses jazz, classical and Brazilian influences.
His 28 year career in music spans music education, performance, recording, producing, arranging and writing music for his 12 CDs as wells as private commissions, commercials, and films. He has authored 5 books.
After gaining recognition for his debut album "Rossport", Steve teamed up with Jazz great Herbie Mann to create the Brazilian influenced "Blue River". Steve joined Herbie Mann's record label Kokopelli Records, and his "Blue River" recording received nationwide exposure and radio airplay, climbing to the Chartbound list.
As a performing artist, Steve has performed his original works with symphony orchestra, and jazz ensembles. He toured extensively with Herbie Mann's Jasil Brazz group, and has shared the stage with Stan Getz, Les McCann, B.B. King, Ramsey Lewis, Claudio Slon, Dave Valentin and The Rippingtons.
As a recording artist, Steve has teamed up with Flutist Hubert Laws, Grammy award winning Brazilian Guitarist/Composer/Singer Dori Caymmi, Percussionist Paulinho da Costa, Guitarist Ricardo Silveira, Bassist Kim Stone, Harpist Deborah Henson Conant, Flutist Herbie Mann, Fisyo Film Studio Orchestra (Prague, Czech Republic), The Colorado Chamber Orchestra and The DaVinci Quartet.
Steve's orchestral works include: "Heritage Suite", "A Midwest Dream" (solo piano and orchestra) and several pieces for jazz quartet and orchestra. The debut performance of "Heritage Suite" was performed in the Czech Republic in 1991 with symphony orchestra, with subsequent performances in the U.S. He was the first American artist invited to perform in the Czech Republic after the fall of communism.
When Steve began to study jazz piano, he searched for technical materials to assist his study of how scales and chords work together in jazz harmony. He noticed a lack of a single source of information for scales, chords, and fingerings necessary for gaining fluency in jazz improvisation. Since there was no single reference book in this area, Steve conceived, wrote and published the book "The Source - The Dictionary of Contemporary and Traditional Scales". The scales in this book represent a collection of contemporary and traditional scales, which one can think of as "tools" for improvisation. Available in Japanese and English, "The Source" is published by music giant Hal Leonard Publishing.
With a foreword written by Dr. Billy Taylor, and enthusiastic endorsements by Oscar Peterson, Dave Brubeck, Lionel Hampton, Marian McPartland, and Clark Terry, "The Source" has become the standard scale book in music education, used by musicians and educational systems worldwide.
In 1991, Steve joined a distinguished list of concert pianists when he was recognized as a Steinway Artist by the venerable piano maker Steinway & Sons. As a Steinway Artist, Steve is provided with a Steinway grand piano on any concert stage in the world.

Altogether pleasurable.......2004-06-27
Too bad for me. Almost anyone would be thrilled to have a musician of his caliber living in their hometown.
An accomplished pianist, bandleader, composer, and producer, with Another Life Brazil Barta has absolutely nailed the Brazilian vibe. Having assembled nearly a who's who of Brazilian musicians, including Paulinho da Costa and Dori Caymmi, and written a handful of completely authentic-sounding tunes in a variety of styles, he's put it all together with striking arrangements and crystal clear production. It's also a real pleasure to hear Herbie Mann on what must be one of his very last recording sessions.
Over and above the magnificent music he makes on this disc, Barta is also an accomplished author, having written a standard work on jazz scales. Called by the late Herbie Mann "a curious blend of Aaron Copeland and Antonio Carlos Jobim," Barta has managed to synthesize a wide variety of styles and come out with a piano sound and composing voice entirely his own.
Thoroughly enjoyable, once again proving that jazz, even when produced on a private label, can be some kind of universal musical language. Highly recommended.
