Tony Bennett Unplugged 20 years early..........2007-03-22
I was working in a Santa Monica restaurant in 1995 where Ross Tompkins played piano a couple of nights a week. He turned me on to this magical album. Every time I listen to it, it touches a different part of my heart. The aching simplicity of "Some Other Time" and the melodic complexities of "Young and Foolish" never let me down.
One of the two best albums of jazz vocals ever recorded.......2007-03-01
When Tony Bennett recorded with Bill Evans, his career was at its nadir. He had lost his contract with Columbia and couldn't find work. Evans was of course still considered a Jazz genius, but 1973 wasn't a good time even for jazz geniuses. Why they ended up in the studio together is a mystery, but the outcome is pure magic.
Bennett was taking a huge chance. There was no orchestra to hide behind, and no pop arrangement to lean on - just the extremely musical but complex Evans playing as he sang. He could have been exposed as just another pop singer, and the chemistry with Evans, who rarely ever accompanied anyone, could have been horrible. But he pulls it off with aplomb!
There is so much richness in the whole album. For example, in "Young and Foolish", Evans forshadows melodic lines that Bennett will be singing as he plays beneath Bennett. The lushness of Bennett's voice is the perfect foil to Evans' harmonic intensity.
The irony is that Bennett, who had never been known as a jazz singer before, becomes known as one, probably on the basis of this album alone; yet, he didn't get back into the studio again for years. And of course for Evans, this album is yet further example of his genius. This is a classic.
Transcendant - Moving - Great Reissue, too.......2007-01-17
I cannot say anything intelligent to describe how important
and eternal this album is, and I'm sure many others have given great
reviews of this and the original CD issues of it.
This new version sounds perfect, and has wonderful alternate takes,
including a version of "Young And Foolish" which includes the opening
verse (not on the original released take). Also includes new liner notes and additional photos.
Wonderful!.......2007-01-10
How can it get much better? Tony Bennett's wonderful voice with Bill Evans wonderful piano playing, they are so smooth together and it's wonderful to listen to.

Mel Torme dismissed Tony Bennett's skills as a jazz singer, and in mining the Great American Songbook, Bennett certainly has drawn more from bel canto style than scat. But as this remarkable 1975 duo album with the great jazz pianist Bill Evans demonstrates, Bennett was (and is) supremely comfortable with jazz and jazz players. Pouring himself into tunes including "My Foolish Heart" and "The Touch of Your Lips," but without the theatrical and pop-operatic flourishes that define and enrich his later work, he delivers what may be his most powerfully direct performance on record. His bold emotion and Evans' refined but forceful lyricism make for an excellent fit (the album includes Evans's classic "Waltz for Debby," with lyrics by Gene Lees). The new expanded edition of The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album boasts four valuable alternate takes that reveal the jazz improviser's art was far from lost on Bennett. The artists re-teamed a year later to fine, if less startling, effect on "Together Again." --Lloyd Sachs

Out of this World!!!.......2007-06-25
I almost feel sorry for any human being on this planet that has not had a chance yet to listen to this absolutely magnificent work of art. Of course, I am exaggerating a bit, but anyone who is even remotely a fan of Tony Bennett's has to make this purchase. I have always been more of a Sinatra fan, yet as much as I love Frank, this one is right up there at the top with anything Ol Blue Eyes ever produced. Tony has never sounded so great in my humble opinion. The guy practically breaks my heart with his amazing rendition of "Some Other Time" (Evan's solo mid-way through deserves a lot of credit as well, it's a beauty!). Every time I play this CD I can't help but to play this song three times in a row before I finally skip to the next one. However, it is just one of the many hightlights in this spellbinding creation by two legendary artists.
What really makes this recording amazing is the fact that it's just one voice and one piano creating such beauty. It took me years before I finally made this purchase because I was ignorant enough to believe that this was going to be too damn boring and also a potential let-down (I prefer music with more instruments, i.e. rythm sections, horns, guitars, etc...). Well what an idiot I was! This is so great that every time you listen to it, it seems to only get better. Like fine wine, it ages well... If I was planning a romantic date or getaway weekend, I wouldn't think twice about grabbing this one off of my CD or record shelf (I own it on both vinyl and CD, both sound great, but vinyl adds a tad bit more romance if you know what I mean).
Finally, the lyrical pianist Bill Evans proves to be the most ideal fit for Tony. They both compliment each other pefectly. And that's what great teams are supposed to do. This is a must purchase for any fan of great music. I envy any fan of Tony's who has yet to hear this one. Because I can absolutely guaranty you (the fan) are going to one happy camper. Then again, I would be suprised that any fan of Tony's could live without this one. The same can be said about Bill Evans as well.
Great, great, great stuff!!!
Meeting of Giants.......2007-03-08
I first heard this CD when building up my piano repetoire to accompany a standards singer. I knew Bill Evans' reputation, but not his work, and I was no Tony Bennett fan. That's all changed. This CD shows off both artists in unexpected ways.
Bennett is usually surrounded by a piano trio or orchestra, with his voice completely drowned in a cloying ocean of reverb; here, with solo piano and just a hint of reverb on his voice, every nuance of vocal expression shines through. In place of the shmaltz and flatness somestimes associated with more ornate Bennett productions, Bennett's skill and subtlety shine through. The emotion that he conveys in this intimate setting demonstrate why he has endured as long as he has - he really is THAT good.
Then there's Evans - an alumnus of Miles Davis' most revered ensemble and an innovator of the jazz piano trio, Bill Evans combines the virtuosity of a concert pianist, the harmonic sophistication of the greatest composers of the romantic and modern eras, a blue ribbon jazz pedigree, and the impeccably good taste keep them from overwhelming his fellow performers. Evans' arrangements give Bennett plenty of room to work while still making almost every moment magical. When it's his turn to solo, Evans gives full and energetic performances that surprise and excite without the usual bass and drums. The piano is recorded beautifully (sadly, not always so with Evans). Evans gives and takes with Bennett like they've worked together forever. There is really no sense of which songs are typically performed by whom, even though some of the songs have been recorded by Evans numerous times (e.g. Evans' own Waltz for Debbie, The Touch of Your Lips, . . .). The constant teamwork, energetic performances and senstive engineering result in a true "duet" production.
The CD features mostly ballads, with a few up tempo numbers (The Touch of Your Lips and When in Rome) and a jazz waltz (Waltz for Debbie). Although the energy and playfulness of the upbeat numbers make them my favorites, the vivid harmonic textures constructed by Evans on the slower numbers make them compelling. There is plenty to digest in this CD, so multiple listenings will be rewarded. Moments like these are what jazz is all about.
Awesome!.......2007-01-04
No one has better pure jazz interpretations on the piano than the great Bill Evans. With Tony Bennett, they are an incomparable duo. I recommend this album, highly!
Bennett at his Best, Subtle and Swinging.......2006-10-22
Tony Bennett is far too familiar for his schmaltzier stuff. Perhaps it's inevitable that the poppier work drowns out an impeccable, understated gem like this. Bill Evans, who is a supernova in his own right in the world of jazz, demonstrates the difference between being an accompanist and an artist, probing, challenging, surrounding Bennett with surprises, rhythmically kicking things along at times and at others making you stop breathing for a moment to take in the sudden dynamic shift that illuminates the lyric. If you know his "Waltz for Debby" and love it (and who wouldn't?), wait till you hear it with the lyrics. And to hear Bennett's palpable resignation in Bernstein's exquisite "Some Other Time" and the whispering conclusion in Evan's concluding bars is to understand why art songs are not the exclusive province of Mahler and his classical peers. Buy this. And its followup, Together Again.
Best Tony Bennett Ever Recorded.......2006-02-25
If you look at Tony Bennett's career, you will find his recordings fall well short of his live performances. He has been compared often and favorably to Frank Sinatra, and his recordings pale especially against Sinatra's. For a given record/CD, Sinatra had a clear idea of the songs, the feel of the album and the musical texture. As noted in Will Friedwald's wonderful book, Sinatra was deeply concerned that his recordings would last.
In contrast, Tony Bennett's recordings were mediocre at best. Why? My thought is that Bennett chose not to challenge himself in the studio, either with material and certainly not with musicians.
But this CD and its sequel are from another galaxy. Just one musician gets the recorded Bennett out of his studio lethargy. Bill Evans, that exquisite pianist challenges Bennett from the first track of this CD and does not let up for a nanosecond. You can hear the effect.
It starts with the first word of the first track, Bennett's voice is deeper, huskier and different on "Young and Foolish". It continues all through the last chords of Days of Wine and Roses.
My only quibble is that the CD ends.

when giants come together.......2006-02-26
Bill Evans is my favorite pianist, and Tony Bennett is a legend, and together they have given us a gift. In the world of jazz they have created magic. For anyone who loves jazz vocals this, along with their follow up CD, should be on the top of your wish list.
Two giants together.......2004-07-04
(On Fantasy) A gem from 1975, and a warm and surprisingly rich album. It's such a treat to hear Bill Evans' thoughtful accompaniment behind Bennett, as just the two of them (and no echo!) take on "Some Other Time", The Touch of Your Lips", "Some Other Time", "Young and Foolish", Waltz For Debby" and others. For those familiar with Evans' other versions of these staples from his song book, its fascinating to hear these with what he does behind Tony Bennett, who never sounded warmer and more expressive. The choices of tunes reflects a lyrical bonanza of rich standards, and the two artists come through in a timely and intimate fashion.Even DOWNBEAT gave it 5 stars when it was released. Fans of this album would probably also want to check out "Together Again"-- the second Evans session with Tony Bennett. Originally recorded for Bennett's long defunct Improv label, it's been re- released on Rhino Records with many bonus tracks and alternate takes. It's not as effective as THIS album, but it works well.
A masterwork from two top pros!.......2004-03-29
While the second collaboration of these two musical giants has gotten the better critical reception, in fact both Tony Bennett and Bill Evans albums are beyond reproach. Some of Mr. Bennet's most nuanced singing ever is here and the piano work of Mr. Evans is flawless. Listen to the selection from "Wonderful Town" to hear how a song can be recast and improved upon when approached afresh. It's not really possible to single out a single track or two as highlights. Every song is brilliant and this collaboration seems as fresh today as the day it was released.
