Pink Martini should be known as the little orchestra that walks a fine line in its music. The Portland, Oregon, outfit is deeply influenced by Latin music, jazz, cabaret, cinema scores, and a smattering of other styles. But rather than simply aping legendary artists in their prime--and fooling only a few dim bulbs in the process--band shakes things up by writing its own material, or at least creating tasteful new arrangements that fit within the band's unique post-lounge framework. The band keeps the playful musical vibe on Hang On Little Tomato, but jettisons what kitsch factor it had, choosing to focus wholly on original material or stuff that isn't recognizable to the average music fan. It's been a seven-year wait for fans since the band's fun debut, Sympathique, and while the blush is now off the rose, the band's creative ambitions and talent are never better displayed than here on their second effort. - Tad Hendrickson

Album Description

Somewhere between a 1930s Cuban dance orchestra, a classical chamber music ensemble, a Brazilian marching street band and Japanese film noir is the 12-piece Pink Martini.

Part language lesson, part Hollywood musical, the Portland, Oregon-based "little orchestra" was originally created in 1994 by Harvard-graduate Thomas M. Lauderdale to play at political fundraisers for progressive causes such as public broadcasting, clean water, libraries, civil rights and affordable housing. In the years following, Pink Martini has gone on to perform its multilingual repertoire on concert stages, in smoky clubs and with symphony orchestras throughout Europe, Greece, Turkey, Taiwan, Lebanon and the U.S.

Hang On Little Tomato, Pink Martini's much-anticipated second album, features a collection of original songs written by the band and its extended family as well as a few undiscovered gems reinterpreted in high style. Drawing on themes articulated on Sympathique, Hang On Little Tomato is the result of the group's diverse collaborations and inspirations. From an advertisement for Hunt's Ketchup in a 1964 issue of Life magazine to a dance sequence in the 1950 Italian film Anna, Hang On Little Tomato includes songs in French, Italian, Japanese, Croatian, Spanish and English. "Una Notte a Napoli," for example, was written with Alba Clemente - an Italian stage and television star in the 1970s - and DJ Johnny Dynell of the legendary New York-based nightclub Jackie 60. In a reworking of the Japanese song "Kikuchiyo To Mohshimasu," Pink Martini collaborated with Hiroshi Wada, the slide guitarist whose group originally recorded and released the song in 40 years ago.

Originally released in 1997, Sympathique met with rave reviews worldwide, finding a place within the hearts of many and selling well over a half million copies. Building its legacy through unstoppable word of mouth, select high profile symphony dates, prominent placement in film and television and fashionable private appearances, Pink Martini has returned with their highly-anticipated follow up. Hang On Little Tomato is every bit the new album Pink Martini fans have been longing for. Lush string arrangements, soaring vocals and cosmopolitan rhythms unfurl from the brilliant international hemisphere that is Pink Martini.

5 out of 5 stars Hang on Little Tomato.......2007-07-02

I love this group and this CD does not disappoint. A unique mix of selections enhanced, as always, by the outstanding musical talent of the group.

4 out of 5 stars Quirky but Nice.......2007-06-27

So...I wasn't quite sure what to expect from Hang on Little Tomato, as I had heard an excerpt from another album on Public Radio, the one where China sings Que Sera with carnival music in the background. That piqued my interest. I did listen to the samples before I ordered it, but couldn't really tell much. I was pleasantly surprised to say the least. I am a classical music fan and have spent many years singing choral music in a number of languages so the songs sung in French and Italian to a Latin rhythm were intriguing. I also liked their "big band" styling. There was only one song on the album that I didn't like, and considering that they wrote most of the music, that's a pretty significant average for me.

5 out of 5 stars The World is Flat... and Pink.......2007-04-29

Seamlessly crossing genres and generations and geographies, Pink Martini's second album is stellar, erudite, and delightful. It is perhaps a wee bit less dazzling than their first (Sympathique), but far above and beyond most of today's music. I've waited a few years to write my review on this one, but since the third album is being released in May 2007, I thought I'd better get moving.

Pink Martini is a group of 15 musicians, occasionally augmented by additional strings. There is one musician from the first album missing: Pepe Raphael, who was a vocalist as well as songwriter. His departure may explain why "Hang On Little Tomato" is a bit less "edgy" than the first album. (You can hear Pepe on the album "Latenight Betty" by Pepe and the Bottle Blondes, which is quite good but at times a bit too camp/kitschy.)

Every song on "Hang On Little Tomato" is a work of art. In the opening of the first cut, a sea of strings sweeps you into a Cuban nightclub, and China Forbes, Pink Martini's leading lady, draws you in with her sultry vocal delivery. She caresses the lyrics "I know a falling star can't fall forever, but let's never stop falling in love." As the song builds, each talented musician in the group adds to the charm; the keyboard, the trumpets, the percussion: perfection. In addition to providing luscious vocals, China Forbes shares songwriting credit for this along with Thomas M. Lauderdale, the group's pianist.

The second cut, "Anna (el negro zumbon)," continues the Latin flavor, featuring a duet with China and Timothy Nishimo (the group's replacement for Pepe, I suppose, as Timothy was not on the first album). This is one of those songs that forces you to move to the beat; quite fun. Superb percussion, including Heinz the barking dog!

The title cut, "Hang On Little Tomato," features a marvelously mellow clarinet prelude, and a boop-boop-be-doop vocal by China Forbes. Sheer delight. Next comes "The Gardens of Sampson and Beasley," another original work that uses strings and harp to mold a mellow charm, and features a bit of "My Darling Clementine" woven in. The garden referenced is Bella Madrona in Sherwood, Oregon, owned by Jim Sampson and Geoff Beasley.

Continuing the mellow mood, Pink Martini next returns to film noir land, offering a sparse, nostalgic "Veronique," with chilling vocals and trumpet performed by Robert Taylor. French is next, with "Dansez-Vous." I originally thought this was the weakest cut on the album, but after seeing them perform this number live, I have a different opinion. In concert, an extended version of this song is a showcase for the multitude of musical talent that resides in the people of Pink Martini.

With "Lilly," the Latin groove returns, and two trumpets dance with staccato piano and piquant percussion. We quickly jump back to French, with a spare, haunting, wistful, "Autrefois." I love this song! It starts out with a funky drumbeat, which quickly is joined by nostalgic piano chords and a soul-searing violin. What a delightful juxtaposition--the modern percussion and the classic violin, piano, and mandolin. And the longing lyrics tell a tale of fond memories "a good long time ago." The soul capture continues on the next cut, U Plavu Zoru. Patsy Chang's opening cello is unbelievable (see this number in concert for a true soul-shaking experience!). The lyrics of this original song are in Croatian. Why? Why not? Music is the communication form that still delights even if one can't understand the words. "U Plavu Zoru" highlights the outstanding musicianship of each individual member, and the talent of the team, as they take us on a symphonic, operatic journey featuring strings, brass, keyboard, and China's gorgeous voice.

The next cut, "Clementine," brings back memories of the sixties. This song channels Burt Bacharach, or perhaps Herb Alpert, and trombone aficionados will be very pleased. The mid-twentieth century tribute continues with "Una Notte a Napoli." This song could have been used instead of "Tu Vuo' Fa L'Americano" in that Italian nightclub scene in "The Talented Mr. Ripley."

In a very Pink Martini move, the next song jumps to Japan, and a Japanese pop song from the sixties. For its cover of this song, Pink Martini enlisted Hiroshi Wada to recreate his slide guitar from the original. This music embodies all the mystery and distinction of Japanese culture, and through simplicity creates great beauty. To continue the "beauty through simplicity" theme, the next number, "Aspettami (Wait for Me)," features only the voice of China Forbes and the guitar of Dan Faehnle, blending to create soothing charm.

And finally, a bit of bit of Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos: Song of the Black Swan. This lush instrumental track carries us, blissfully, to the conclusion of Pink Martini's magical musical world tour. I wish politicians could bring harmony across cultures as well as these musicians.

All but three of the album cuts were written by members of the group, which is the inverse of the case on their first album. I believe you will enjoy and never tire of this CD. If you have the chance to see Pink Martini in concert, run, don't walk. I'll see them again in two months. And remember the new one arriving in May 2007!

5 out of 5 stars Now here's a reason to watch PBS.......2007-04-26

This CD is glorious! Listening to it almost makes PBS worth watching. LOL! I love that this CD is multi-lingual and jazzy. This is one of my favorite CDs.

Phenomenal! Love the varying languages. Love the vocals. The songs keep running through my head long after I listen. I hope it's not so long before the next album!

Handsome in his designer clothes and angelic, nappy dreads, Maxwell styles himself a modern-day urban love prophet in the tradition of Marvin Gaye. He concocts a conceptual music suite that purports to tell a fully rounded tale of meaningful love set in the tough but misunderstood inner city. What he delivers, however, contains only the faintest hints of what he promises. Instead we get a whole lot of the same tired R&B elevator slush and lyrics like "Gonna take you in the room suga'/ Lock you up and love for days." Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite is significant only in that it recasts the same old same old as something monumental, and nearly pulls it off.

Initially, there's a lot to like about Maxwell: On his openers, "Urban Theme" and "Welcome," the early '80s full-band R&B and jazz pop grooves are reminiscent of Maze's brightest days and Steely Dan's coolest nights. But soon even Maxwell's passionate voice gets lost in a flat mix that turns every song into faceless background music. While R&B is at no loss for suave and sexy personalities to take the stage, a dearth of new ideas keeps the genre for the most part floundering and visionless. In the end, Maxwell's urban hang suite is just another empty room. --Roni Sarig

THis album is a classic. If i were editor of an r&b version of the source I would give Maxwell 5 Mics. Every song on the ablum is sexy! This is the album you can groove to, make love to, listen to, sing to...whatever! It's the best I've ever heard. Any real neo soul or r&b fan should have this album in thier collection. My all time fav songs on this album are:
Ascention (Dont ever wonder), Sumthin Sumthin, Til The Cops Come Knocking, Lonely's The Only Company.....Oh my gosh!!!!Maxwell cant be touch...THis album is absolutely amazing!

4 out of 5 stars The Start Of It All.......2007-06-17

He has two other cds with aroud five or so great tracks on each. For new fans, he has a track written by R.Kelly called Fortunate, different to his mucic style but a great song, its off a movie soundtrack called Life. I think if he sticks to his style of music but does one or two tracks like fortunate on his future cds, they would be even better.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable Debut.......2007-05-30

I was not in the cheering section when Maxwell made his debut with "Urban Hang Suite", a concept album, built around a weekend tryst. I remember watching the video for 'Til The Cops Come Knockin' believing he would be a one-hit wonder-if the song, which at the time I felt was mundane, became a hit at all. It wasn't until the song 'Sumthin' Sumthin' ' debuted that I began to step back and really take a listen. Using live instruments (of all things) and blending old school soul, R&B and Funk, Maxwell, along with co-conspirators D'Angelo and Erykah Badu, helped to give life support to the growing monotomy of R&B music and are often credited as founders of "Neo-Soul" Music. Although I prefer Maxwell's sophomore effort "Embrya", "Urban Hang Suite" was a remarkable debut, and deservedly became a critically acclaimed classic. And it will more than likely grow in appeal in the years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-03-29

Greetings,
Maxwell does a fantastic job of showing you how great of a singer he is. This is a c.d for the archives, one to keep around and one that every music fan should have regardless of what kind of music you listen to. Good music just wants to be heard!

5 out of 5 stars Prepare to be blown away!.......2007-06-25

Burning Brides have outdone themselves with this new album! I got goosebumps from the first strum of Dimiti's mighty axe! This band continues to produce new and amazing music. Each song on this album leaves an impression that will NOT be forgotten. What I feel is most different on this album, as compared to the first two releases, is an obvious L.A. feel to the sounds that I hear. It is almost as if the band has become more comfortable with themselves as artists...thank goodness for that ocean air! Props to Burning Brides for creating their best album yet!

5 out of 5 stars Back With A Vengance.......2007-06-24

Hang Love is The Burning Brides 3rd record, and it is amazing. To me it takes all the best parts of their two previous records Fall of the Plastic Empire and Leave No Ashes, and then adds a whole heaping of Heavy. Having been a fan for a long time, its great to see them continuing to push themselves to make their songs better, and not rest on their laurels. My picks for top song are: Waring Street, Your Nation Will Die, and Poor House.

2 out of 5 stars Not My Style.......2007-05-11

This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Western Music.......2005-07-29

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

5 out of 5 stars A great follow-up.......2003-08-29

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

Soundtracks are a mixed bag at best. Some are little more than an assortment of pieces, but others hang together effectively on their own, like this one. The idea of Chinese music--both popular and operatic--juxtaposed with the sounds of Nat King Cole performing Latin music might seem bizarre, but it works beautifully, sustaining a lush, romantic mood created both by the strings and the '40s Chinese music, itself a tinkling Hollywood pastiche. But as atmospheric as all this is, one track stands out above the others: "Blue," actually a version of the classic "St. James' Infirmary," takes on another dimension in Chinese hands. While familiar but completely alien at the same time, the slithering Asian sonorities mesh perfectly with the African-American form to create something evocative but with a sadness that goes beyond blues. The movie is of a time and place; the soundtrack is of a mood and yearning. Listen at night, with someone you love close by. --Chris Nickson

4 out of 5 stars Awsome Instrumental Music.......2007-03-09

The soundtrack is really good; I didn't like some of the songs (the Chinese ones) but there are only 3 in the whole CD. The instrumental music is awesome making the soundtrack an average good.

4 out of 5 stars The Bing Crosby songs are very good but...........2006-07-17

In my opinion it`s the Bing Crosby-songs that makes this album worth buying, but these songs can be bought on compilations. The rest of the music is for people with special interest for backgroundmusic in films.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING! Hauntingly beautiful..........2006-05-09

So beautiful and emotional, it makes you want to cry! The score for the film and the collection of music together is absolutely breathtaking....

5 out of 5 stars A great soundtrack for a lover of WKW films.......2006-03-22

I loved the film, so I love the soundtrack, which brings back memories of the film. WKW uses period music to evoke the emotions and feel of the time period of the film.

5 out of 5 stars as gorgeous as the film!.......2006-02-11

Film soundtracks are often disappointing---there are songs from the movie that are not on the CD, songs on the CD that were not in the film, different versions of songs on the CD than in the film, etc.

Happily, this soundtrack is absolutely faithful to the film, and it is masterfully interwoven with dialogue excerpts from the film which complement and build on the music instead of being obtrusive. I don't understand a word of Chinese but still enjoyed listening to the actors' voices, and also liked the bits of traditional Chinese music as well. There are some tracks that I don't remember from the film but they are not throw-away filler in any way, just beautiful extras in the same vein.

4 out of 5 stars If you tell a lie........2007-02-25

The McCoys were from Ohio and in the 1960's my own rock band in Columbus, Ohio opened for them not long after their "Hang on Sloopy" hit. If you tell a lie (title of one of the songs on this CD) and say you don't enjoy the McCoys then shame on you. Their music is very easy to listen to. In case you don't know, Rick Derringer was the lead guitar player and singer for the McCoys. He changed his name after leaving the group to disassociate himself from the McCoys type of music. There are several very good songs on this CD. Good listening.

5 out of 5 stars A True Best of The McCoys.......2006-08-27

This CD offers an excellent sound, I have a similar CD from See For Miles Records that sounds like it was recorded off another CD or even a vinyl source. All the hits and top B sides are here. If you are only familiar with Hang On Sloopy then you have a big surprise in store and a very pleasant one at that. Check out Sorrow (a big hit in GB by The Merseys), Up and Down, Richie Valen's Come On Let's Go and So Good. Some great album cuts like Smokey Joe's Cafe, Gaitor Tails and Monkey Ribs and a great unreleased version of Bald Headed Lena also covered by The Lovin' Spoonful.
These guys are young but are fine musicians, especially Rick Zehringer (later Derringer) on guitar. Their voices are very good and they harmonize nicely. There are 22 cuts and only a couple are weak, the rest are fun 60's rock and roll.

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing garage without much of the usual alienation.......2005-10-25

The thing about the McCoys' songs is, though the overall sound is tame compared with the wilder garage sort of bands (the Leaves "Hey Joe"; the Thirteenth Floor Elevators "You're Gonna Miss Me"; Love "Seven and Seven Is"; Count Five "Psychotic Reaction"), they have a drive not unlike those bands, which keeps their never-tentative sound out of more shallow waters frequented by the Monkees, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, and the Turtles (in their post-folk-rock period). McCoys' songs elicit a more extended palate of colors, both bright and somber, than many of the bands on the mid-sixties scene.

Sexual expression pervades their `good-time' type songs: not-overly-subtle make-out metaphors are floated by their lyrics ["up and down, in and out, running all around, that's how it is - when it comes"] ["Sloopy let your hair down on me . . . .come on, come on, shake it shake it, Sloopy, hang on."]. One must mention the emphatic rhythmic drive, the tempos which are obviously perfect; it gets (subtly, or blatantly?) orgasmic, doesn't it?

This is "the joy of teenage sex" before the `book' was written . . . it's definitely not `forbidden' fruit. "You Make Me Feel So Good" is brimful of this energy. Unflagging repetitions of the chorus at the end just keep on building; we're totally ready to go with it, into it (for hours if necessary?) The Drifters' "Sixty Minute Man" from ten years back had nothing on this one! As not-yet accomplished teens in '65-'66, these songs presented to many of us hope for a future of budding possibilities; they got us really feeling good about things.

One of the main reasons the McCoys sounded so good was Rick Derringer - even at that young age he was one of the best-sounding lead singers, AND one of the most technically advanced, expressive lead guitarists around. Every lick he plays, and every melody he wraps his voice around can create a sense of astonishment in an alert listener - there's great inflection, tone, emotion etc. etc. etc. - and a warm, overall sense of ease in action. He's just plain listener-friendly

I think the only other similar band of the era both in terms of their ages and of overall sonic ambience was Dino, Desi and Billy. Before DD&B morphed into their late sunshine pop phase, both bands had just enough of a hard edge, and displayed ample imagination and grit to keep comparisons with afore-mentioned bands Gary Lewis, The Monkees [etc.] at bay. Amazingly well that D, D & B could play and sing, still they didn't have a Rick Derringer amongst them.

Back to the songs: there are those with which the McCoys were paying righteous tribute to the sound of other mid-sixties bands, notably the Beach Boys and the Rolling Stones.

Consider "Sorrow", the b-side of "Fever": if it had been available to them, the Stones should have covered this, as it would have been a perfect fit for them circa 1964-early 1965; if the McCoys would have made it one of their singles it could have moved their fan base in a different direction than did the trio of thoroughly happy-sounding singles that immediately followed "Fever" [those being "Up and Down", "(You Make Me Feel) So Good", and "Come On Let's Go"]. Then again, legions of budding teens might not have learned as innocently about compellingly happy sex. As for the other song with a very strong Stones connection: the chorus of "Don't Worry Mother (Your Son's Heart Is Pure)" leads the listener into melodic/tonal/rhythmic worlds parallel to "Paint It, Black", "Mother's Little Helper" and so on - especially listen for Derringer's recurring 7-note guitar lick., and the obvious modal melodic influence of middle eastern music (which the Standells also mined in "Why Pick On Me?").

There's a vocal lick from "Help Me Rhonda" ("bom, bom, bom, bom") that's dropped into a new Beach Boys' style song ["Runaway"]. The song is at least as appealing as anything up-tempo that the Beach Boys had produced up to that point in time (judging from this CD, the McCoys didn't seem to have recorded any ballads). As a lead singer, Derringer can sound more soulful than Mike Love (though Mike's voice is a perfect blend with the rest of his group). The McCoys' other very sweet BB-style song is "Mr. Summer", with its electric piano ostinado dropping in and out being very reminiscent of "California Girls", performed at a slightly more relaxed tempo.

Another surprise is an original song touting James Brown and his Famous Flames ["The Dynamite"]; it's a first rate send-up/amalgam of a couple of JB's contemporary songs from the period, and is intentionally hilarious. Rick D here paraphrases all kinds of Fabulous Flames guitar licks, yet backs off from trying to sound exactly like JB or his guitarist in terms of tone (settings). But yes, his and the band's rhythm and overall delivery are right in the pocket. The licks by the sax section hone a pure, furious funk perfection; and the overall joy is infectious.

Other great trax include their follow-up to "Hang On Sloopy" ["Fever"] which I considered my favorite at the time; there's a moving version of "Every Day I Have to Cry" (unbelievable that Derringer could sing with such heartfelt emotion at that age); and the relatively late "Say Those Magic Words", which re-captures the rhythmic drive of the `make-out songs', and may surpass them by flirting melodically with ever-shifting boundaries between major and minor modes.

"I Got To Go Back (And Watch That Little Girl Dance)" and "Beat the Clock" are slightly second-rate, but will gather in lots of votes. The former follows the harmonic progression and even the general melodic contour of "Hang On Sloopy", but there's a syncopated calypsonian lilt to the lead vocal line with/by which Derringer awesomely busts us upside our haids. "Beat the Clock" seems over-produced: there's not enough air in the mix, i.e. it gets muddied by a slavish similarity between the lead singer's line and what the filler instruments are playing (both in terms of register and rhythm). The arranger might have had a brain fart, forgetting what he knew about counterpoint; but the mixing engineer didn't help matters by choosing too dark and thick-sounding of a reverb setting. The song has immense potential - I'd love to hear them re-record it.

The liner notes are generally informative, but the writer seems to go off the deep end, acting as if he thinks he's writing his masters thesis or something. He serially returns to a certain point he announces at the beginning, thereafter trying to `brilliantly' show how everything (in this case about the McCoys' history) derives from that `idea'.

His enlightened discovery is that they were still 'as if' little kids. He keeps coming back to that, over and over; after a while it starts feeling like a derogatory slant aimed towards the band members.

Some rock journalists can be such beasts of burden - trouble begins when they try to foist their personal intellectual baggage onto their readers. It would be better if this guy just told his story, made a few incisive observations at various junctures, and left it at that; instead he gets overbearing with his conjectures - they don't really hold water, as they're only meant to make history conform to his so-termed `big premise'.

4 out of 5 stars Sky-High Fidelity.......2005-04-19

One aspect of this CD that hasn't been emphasized is how incredibly well it was recorded. The sound is astonishingly life-like; on a few songs, it sounds as if the band is playing right in your living room (aided by the stereo mix from master tapes). It's ridiculous that a band like this was better recorded at this time (1965-66) than the Who, Kinks, the Stones, et al. Also, the version of "Beat the Clock" included here is the full-length version, not the abridged radio version. The highlight of this album for me is the snakey fuzz guitar/electric piano riff on "Got to Go Back"--way cool.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Sixties Groups! .......2005-02-12

I thoroughly enjoyed the various songs compiled on this CD and each one is beautiful to listen to, including "Fever," "Everyday You Have to Cry" and "Smokey Joe's Cafe." Oh, and "Hang On Sloopy. Buy it! You'll love it.

Tisdale may never completely step out of the shadow of the great bassist Stanley Clarke, but he is further emerging with his own voice on each album--and Clarke has never led the NCAA in scoring. The former pro hoopster can't help the Clarke-influenced phrasing he burns into "Ready to Hang," "The Time Is Here," and "Off Into It." Producer/keyboardist Jeff Lorber makes everybody on his team better, and he's in the lineup on three tracks. Synthesizer programmer James Lloyd from Pieces of a Dream also contributes with a duet on the title track, feeding Tisdale a funky slam dunk. Tisdale's cover of "Ain't No Stopping Us Now" could easily cross over to the urban pop market, but his version of Smokey Robinson's "Cruisin'" is the only real air ball. --Mark Ruffin

I love this album like the rest of Wayman's work. Reading another review talking about this being the debut on Koz's label answered a HUGE question for me about this album. I was wondering why in the world Wayman did "Better Days" with Koz instead of Everette Harp. Wayman and Harp did an absolutely remarkable job on Harp's "Better Days". But that aside, this album is what you come to expect from Wayman.

4 out of 5 stars Hang Time revisited 2006.......2006-09-11

After buying the newest release, The Silver Lining, and seeing them live in August of this year, I had a vague recollection of this cd. I seemed to remember all of my guy friends having it, playing it in their cars, and me NOT liking it very much. Curiosity getting the better of me, I bought a copy to see if it was the cd I remembered. Yes, in fact, it was. But with one big difference. No longer a slave to the hair bands of 1988, when this disk came out, I fell in love with it immediately. It suffers some from minimal production, tinny, little bass, and a serious issue with guitars completely drowning out the vocals. (There's a great counterpoint vocal in Cartoon that is all but inaudible and completely indecipherable.) There are strong songs on this disk (Sometime to Return, Cartoon, Beggars and Choosers) that deserve better than they got, and of course there is some attitudinal racket. Soul Asylum was big on great songwriting peaks followed quickly by a tumble into a sonic abyss, but overall it's a great record. Not without its jokes, Twiddly Dee is a mosh squaredance, and Put the Bone In is...I don't know what it is. Funny is what it is.
I love this cd now. I'd love to see some of these songs get some new treatment, just to see what they could be, although I've heard some of them live and they're just amazing. If you have never heard anything pre-Grave Dancers, pick this up. And pick up the followup as well. Great music, missed by the world.

5 out of 5 stars Still sounds great after all these years.......2006-07-28

This was my favorite album of 1988 and I played it until my college roommates had memorized it all through osmosis. And it still sounds great! I just saw Soul Asylum live (I first saw them in 1986--20 years ago) and "Cartoon" still rocked. Soul Asylum is a terrific, solid band and incredible live. Buy this and go see them!

5 out of 5 stars an unknown classic.......2006-03-04

I bought this the year it came out in '88 after hearing it played in a music store. It's probably the best thing they ever did. Been waiting for them to match it but SA went gradually down hill after this. They caught on to mainstream audiences with Grave Dancer's Union and the bland radio friendly MTV sellout "Runaway Train" and it did em in. But Hang Time is great, highly recommend this lost classic.

4 out of 5 stars Tight rock...for an audience of zero.......2005-04-29

Just like everyone else, I hadn't heard of Soul Asylum prior to 1992. And despite the fact that I thought Grave Dancers Union was just an okay album, something compelled me to get my hands on Soul Asylum's back catalog. Don't ask me what it was that drove me to this, perhaps it's better off unexplained.

So I slowly acquired the music from their past, through the Twin Tone and A&M years. And I have to say I am most impressed with Hang Time. The whole thing just seems to, ahem, hang together very well.

Not many cues are taken from Made To Be Broken or While You Were Out, Soul Asylum's two previous albums that were filled with attitude and racket. Signing onto a major label and working with a production staff of Ed Stasium and Lenny Kaye seemed to give the band the right amount of posterior kick to sound like a completely different band. And it works. Oh, does it work.

Many of these songs, though rooted in punk, take a completely different direction in which Dave Pirner learns how to write songs with big ideas rather than nail a set of words to some crunch chords. The guitar interplay of Pirner and Dan Murphy are a perfect match, and the intricacies of the music (if such a thing exists in punk rock) are strong enough of a foundation for the catchiness to rest on. Nothing here sounds forced or backward.

Songs like Sometime To Return, Standing In The Doorway, and the Murphy original Cartoon prove that Soul Asylum could carry the weight of mature songcraft just as well as their Minneapolis peers, Husker Du and the Replacements. According to my description, you would have thought this album would've broken the bank for the band long before the Runaway Train came along. But as of this date, Hang Time has yet to sell 100,000 copies.

So don't confuse quality with quantity. Hang Time could've been seen as a post-punk milestone had the musical climate been different and if A&M would have promoted the whole deal. But alas, this is the one that got away.

5 out of 5 stars Battle of Bands.......2005-04-02

The Mats and SA. I would ask the reviewer who said everything done by the Mats is better than anything SA did, if he has ever listened to Don't Tell A Soul, or All Shook Down. Pure crap. I love the Mat's, but come on, that was the Paul Westerberg band. He is my two cents. This is Soul Asylum's best album and best period as a live band. You could still see them at college's with about 20 other local fans. The only albums better by the Mat's would be Let It Be and possibly Pleased To Meet Me (I know everyone loves Tim, but it did nothing for me). I would much rather spend time listening to Made To Be Broken than Sorry Ma, or Stink. And in conclusion Husker Du were better than both of them.

5 out of 5 stars The good ole' stuff........2007-04-03

Goldfinger sure has changed over the years. They're no longer ska...infact they're quite the opposite. Their new material leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion and I've since lost interest in the band.

This a great album, bringing us back a decade ago into the world of ska-punk and all its charm. Funny enough, the album was very much a studio assembled piece of work. Although the core 4 members were a band already, there's a ton of cameos on the CD, including Scott and Dan from Reel Big Fish on horns, and Angelo Moore from Fishbone on saxaphone and backup vocals. This obviously to satisfy the at-the-time popularity of ska. Regardless, the result is great and very much missed among Goldfinger's new material.

The CD itself is a great mix of ska, punk, rock, and a fusion of all three. The album's most recognized track 'Superman', made famous by Tony Hawk Pro Skater, kicks the album off just right. Fast, catchy, and with plenty of horns. My personal favorite is 'Carlita'. It's an amazing ska rooted song, with just enough rock thrown in to get you through and wet your appetite. Angelo Moore's backups take it to the next level, and his sax solo's are simply amazing.

This is by far Goldfinger's best work, and it's a shame we won't hear anything like it from them anytime soon.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty sweet.......2006-07-29

I love this album. There are a lot of good songs on it and there's quite a bit of variety on this. Some songs are fun, some are relaxing, and some are great to listen to when you're mad! Congrats on a great album, Goldfinger.

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2005-10-23

This is a classic 90s ska album. It's just perfect to sing along with. After this, Goldfinger just went downhill. There are a few songs today that are good, but most of them suck. Why did you get rid of the horns John? Whyyyyyyyyyyyy??????

5 out of 5 stars this is talent.......2005-05-27

This is my favoriot CD. This was before the band got caught up in bad lyrics and peta.

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2004-12-16

This CD gives me some serious nostalgia, because the first track, "Superman", was featured on the first Tony Hawk's Pro Skater for the N64 and PS1. It's a real throwback for me, and for the rest of you people who recognize it. As for the rest of the tracks, this album is quite listenable. I still don't get why the last track is 36 minutes long when only 8 minutes of it is really used for music. Stupid. But anyway, if you're just looking for some good punk, then get it.
