For all of Leonard Bernstein's remarkably eclectic affinities, his legacy as a conductor is not often associated with Baroque music. Yet this remastered recording of Bach's St. Matthew Passion--like that of his Bach concertos with Glenn Gould and others--is a moving document of musical and emotional empathy. True, Bernstein's stylistic approach (the frequently languorous tempos, the italicized effect accorded certain significant moments in Bach's richly textured drama) and employment of large-scale choral and orchestral forces have long since fallen out of favor in the wake of the "authentic- performance" movement. And purists will certainly object to the use of English texts as well as numerous cuts from the original score (mostly in Part Two). That said, Bernstein's reading has a thrilling cogency and dramatic consistency fully abetted by the New York Philharmonic's heartfelt playing as well as by the excellently prepared chorus. Listen to the subtly varied inflections of each recurrence of the chorale "O Lamb of God Most Holy" to signal the inexorable course of the tragedy, or to the devastating impact of the sorrowful final double chorus. The vocal soloists are unfortunately uneven, ranging from David Lloyd's erratic, hooty tenor as the Evangelist to the multidimensional Jesus characterized by bass William Wildermann. The set includes a bonus track of Bernstein discussing how Bach unfolds his vividly dramatic structure in the Passion. -- Thomas May

A "Regular People" Review.......2007-03-19
Wow, I picked this up used for six bucks and was not expecting much because I wasn't too exited about the thought of an english translation. I was blown away when I listened to this. Not only is this great emotional music (I didn't think they made baroque music like this!). But I can follow it in english and it makes it incredibly entertaining and simply beautiful. Great music AND it tells a story! Really, give this a try....and keep me updated! (also does anyone think its odd that he has a cigarette in his hand on the cover, you can tell that this was produced a while ago, today thats not politically correct!....just an observation)
The best of the baroque era!.......2005-04-19
Lutheran tradition of setting the passion narrative to music reached its peak in J. S. Bach's "Saint Matthew's Passion". It recounts biblical events and tries to apply their lessons to life. This work is the most famous of Bach's five passions and it regularly alternates between different time frames. The central narrative, taken from the Gospel of Saint Matthew 26-27, but also based on several texts written by C. F. Henrici (Picander), a librettist and close friend of the composer himself, takes place in biblical times. An evangelist narrates the story of Jesus's arrest, trial and crucifixion, with different solo singers performing the parts of Jesus, Judas, Pilates, High Priests, Disciples, roman soldiers and the crowd.
Another set of musical pieces regularly takes us out of the biblical time frame and into modern times with arias and duets. In these pieces, individuals contemplate the implications of biblical events for modern believers.
This work was meant for use as part of church services, especially Good Friday Vespers. It is sometimes compared to an opera and sometimes to a sermon. "Saint Matthew's Passion" represents the culmination of lutheran tradition of liturgical passions and it certainly demonstrates the height of Bach's compositional mastery and the profundity of his musical expression. With this massive work, Bach claimed his throne as a genius and master of polyphonic music. He optimally uses all musical means available to him at the time: widely diverse singing voices and instrumental sonorities. Generally, the chorus express the crowd's feelings, while the chorals symbolize the christian community. Every character has his/her particular musical style in the Passion. The evangelist carries the actions forward in the form of recitative secco, accompanied by continuo alone, merely recounting events. Jesus speaks to his disciples and to Pilates in a form between recitative and aria.
My personal favorite parts: "Erbarme dich, Mein Gott" (Lord, have mercy!") aria, accompanied by a somewhat wayward baroque violin, and of course, the tragic, triumphant chorus finale "Wir setzen uns mit tränen nieder" ("We sit down with tears in our eyes"), one of the most beautiful and powerful things a christian mind has ever created!
FROM BERNSTEIN'S SOUL TO OURS.......2003-04-18
I've waited 20 years to find this re-release of a 60's recording that I'd worn out 2 sets of LPs playing. In my view this is one of Bernstein's finest- every tempo, every dynamic, every nuance flows from his soul to his baton and to the orchestra, chorus, and soloists. Certainly not for the purists given the cuts and modern orchestral treatment, but for pure listening bliss this is the recording to own. His (all too) brief explanation of this work at the end exposes his emotional involvement with this masterful music and is a delightful bonus that was originally included as a 7" LP in the set. Bravo to Sony for their Bernstein re-release program!
passion in this Passion.......2002-03-24
The true test of this recording is comparing the last chorus with other versions by Klemperer, Gardiner, Ritcher, Koopman, et al. Why?
Because Bach was wrenching all the drama he could from that last
expression of the sorrow of life of Jesus. "Wir setzen uns mit Tranen nieder" says it all. And Bernstein's version comes in at the slowest.
Over nine minutes! Koopman at six. And the cold, heartless Gardiner
even faster. Gardiner has no concept of the meaning and glorious
passion in this music. Don't buy his Bach recordings. Listen only to
this last chorus' first phrase and how gut-wrenching it is! Bernstein
understood this great masterpiece, and his version is worth buying
just for this chorus.
A Wonderful Musical and Spiritual Experience........2001-05-09
Music is a dynamic art and must adapt in many ways with each individual performance. I really don't place much value in the effort to perform a composition only by the "original" or "period" standards. If one lays aside such bias, one may experience the muscial beauty and spiritual blessing of this performance of a sacred classic. I speak German as a second language, but thoroughly enjoyed hearing it in English. After all, one's mother tongue is always a more powerful medium. English draws us closer to the message of Christ's atoning death which Bach sought to share in this masterpiece. This recording is very passionate and moving. Kudos also to the staff at Sony who remastered the originals onto CD. I had no idea that the performance was from the early 60's until I read it. The sound quality is tops.

Customer Reviews:
Superlatives fail me..........2003-04-10
On a scale of 1 - 10, this album just plain runs way off of the scale! I'll say at the outset: you won't find anything even vaguely neutral in this review. Well, yes, you don't know me and I don't know you, so it's hard to know if you can trust me. But this CD is such an intoxicatingly profound statement of creativity, that I suggest you just take the gamble and LUNGE for it!
OK, so I am an old-time fiddler, but I like a wide variety of music, and this collection has a broad base of appeal for anyone who likes acoustic music. The first tune is a fresh spin on a traditional tune: Sail Away Ladies. However Molly Tennenbaum's luscious banjo opening provides a tantalizing appetizer of what is to follow. By the time this tune melts into the first of Mark's creations, you'll be hooked. The compositions keep unfolding with a freshness and variety of rhythms that runs far afield of traditional music, and poses the dilemma of being clearly new yet always seeming almost familiar.
It's truly an all-star cast of traditional musicians that blend into an extraordinarily fluid sound as different instruments weave in and out. Fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, bass, piano, flute, and a variety of special sounds provide a tapestry that is complex, and yet never over powering. The melodies are intricate and well crafted with deft but unexpected twists and turns. Just as you think you've got it, a fresh variation emerges to delight you. The chord progressions provide a setting which is the sonic equivalent of a roller-coaster ride.
Most of the tunes are strung together into medleys of two or three that seem to follow so approriately that they seem like movements of a symphony. Yet the dates in the liner notes make it clear that they were written at over a fairly wide period.
When this CD is over, I always find myself going back to the beginning to hear it again. And now, I'm hooked on learning all the chords for guitar and working out the fiddle parts just for the pleasure of admiring the craftsmanship, as you would run your hand appreciatingly over the curves of a scupture in a museum (when the guard isn't looking).
OK, I'll stop here. I sincerely hope you enjoy this as much as I do.

Smoothly swingin' bones.......2001-08-31
After hearing this 1996 set, I wonder why these two trombonists haven't collaborated further. Ron Westray and Wycliffe Gordon, two members of the old "young lions" contingent, lay out some exemplary grooves and blues on the unwieldy trombone and have loads of fun. The listener will too. Throughout the eleven tunes on this release, Westray and Gordon entertain on a level not unlike the old Jay and Kai records, yet sound virtually nothing like the eponymous boppers they looked to for inspiration. Gordon's "What?!" is an awfully catchy number that shows off some nice harmonic tricks while "It's Time" utilizes warbly tonguing, reminiscent of something out of Duke's era, without sounding dusty and trite. Perhaps the most satisfying element of this recording is that though the pair are obviously skilled masters, they keep it loose and never stop having fun and experimenting with the instrument, sometimes sounding soft and melancholy, sometimes blasting away at will, sometimes imitative of various barnyard animals. The intro to "New Beginnings (Groove Cone)" catches one off-guard with a quirky, probing duet, then settles into a satisfying, lazy groove with nice compliments by drummer Herlin Riley. Add the sparkling piano of Marcus Roberts and "Bone Structure" easily gets a high recommendation. The only question is: when's the follow-up?
Beautiful and powerful music.......1999-03-07
I saw these two trombonists on two consecutive nights last year, and in both preformences, the audience was completely mesmerized by their music - in a small jazz joint, and in a large hall. To hear wycliffe gordon play (beautifully) for 5 minutes on the trombone's mouthpiece(!) was an amazing musical expirience, and I ran out to buy their CD the day after the second show. If you love great jazz, you'll love this cd - innovative, yet classic jazz. If you love j.j. Johnson and Kay Winding, here is a new musical couple to bring the trombone back into the spotlight. The only bad thing to say about these artists is - Hey, you guys, it's been a long time, how about a new album, please?
Most inovative use of the trombone I have ever heard........1999-02-27
I have never in my life heard such creativity and inovation stream from a group in my life. Wycliffe and Ron use the Trombone in ways that have never been attempted before. They evoke emotion through their use of multiphonics and their creation of alternate tones, colors, and effects. Being a trombone player myself I can truly appreciate and respect the amount of talent and ability these two men poses, however, this recording doesn't limit itself to strictly trombone players but to any jazz audience that is willing to listen to something new and fresh. My undying gratitude to these two for helping to redefine the trombone from a dull, slugish, and boring instrument to one that is expressive and exciting.

the most organic music i have ever heard.......2005-11-09
2 extended pieces (22- and 32-minutes each) that flow like the valleys and hills of vermont. and it sounds just as organic as those maple-lined knobs look. steady, groovy basslines (not unlike something you would find in a Can or German Oak track) and propulsive, jazz drums provide the backbone for guitar, piano, saxophone, woodwinds, accordian (!--used so well, too), organ, and who knows what else to interact, all slowly tumbling down and striding up the aforementioned hills, fading in and out, playing glorious darkened melodies, completely austere and nocturnal, slightly lugubrious, and totally and entirely original and natural.
all of these elements combine to create a lucid whole with shifting shapes and textures with excellent use of different timbres and tones to create amazing atmoshper, imagery, and tonal color. it is all very powerful to hear, and i rank it on par with the works of talk talk, eyvind kang, and parson sound in terms of quality, depth, and power. as one of my all-time favorites and a "desert island disc" it is so, so highly recommended.

Fantastic Groove Jazz.......2004-12-22
I also saw these guys at the Montreal Jazz Festival this past summer and I was so blown away that I ran right out to get their record. If you like Jazzanova or LTJ Bukem, you'll love these guys. And they're not DJ's; they're musicians. They've got some other stuff available on iTunes, which IMHO is even better than this record, but this record is definitely not one to pass by. And see them live if you ever have a chance.
Cheers!.......2004-07-29
Way cool album, great combo of sounds, I recomend it to everyone. Can't wait for the next one
Live at the Montreal Jazz Festival.......2004-07-14
I saw these guys live at the Montreal Jazz Festival and they were brilliant! I hadn't heard them before, but heard the music and had to check it out. Their CD is very nice as well. It grooves but is also very inventive. There's not much electronic music out there that is this high quality, and the fact that they can do it live adds to their appeal. I can't wait to hear more!
finally something that's groovin' !!!.......2004-01-19
have you wondered what would happen if two great minds got together with no other ambition but to cook up some of the best funk you can ever imagine. that is what this album is.
down tempo funk/jazz for days. you can equally listen to this album rolling in your ride or just chill-n in a dark basesment with your fly honey. it makes you want to flare up a smoke and chill.
Could listen to this music all day, all night, and beyond.......2004-01-07
I have never felt compelled to write an Amazon review until now. I heard one of K&W's songs ("Vaccine," to be released on new CD) on internet radio and it blew me away. Instant addiction to this group. Like no other jazz/ambient/urban/downtempo (undefinable) music you ever heard. You'll love this music if you like great percussion, like the repetitiveness of ambient rhythms, and appreciate the BASS, because this music has the best(...) bass-playing you ever heard. If you like sounds that are a little spacey/atmospheric and mysterious, with hip, urban percussion and beautifully composed chords and progressions, buy this album and download the MP3's on Amazon as well. Many tracks start simply, and build and build in complexity, with layer upon layer of variations in texture and harmonic interest. Great synthesized sounds, beautiful piano, chords, and harmonies that are gorgeous and interesting and complex. No one element dominates the others; they blend like they're all part of one liquid sound, and I find this balance between percussion, keyboard, and bass very unusual and satisfying. A few have a little bit of vocal that sounds almost more percussion than voice. The rhythms are fantastic- this is great music to dance or work out to! Westdal's bass is in a class by itself: fabulously interesting melodic bass guitar that I love listening to just on its own and for its cool interplay with keyboard. Check out "Battle of the Giant Robots" -About three minutes in there are four notes that build into a four-chord upward progression that's just a knockout. For their beautiful subtlety, listen to "Onikoroshi," which starts out with strong percussion, but then slowly adds very subtle harmonies--you really have to listen to it a number of times and the subtlety grows on you. That happens with a lot of their songs-- the more you listen, the more you hear. "Sunset" is a great example of how mellow and sweet the sound can be, mixed together with an edgy, hip beat. They mix so many elements, so well. Best example of all, and my personal favorite: the sophisticated "Nebula." It's available on "New Sound Theory 2" and as Amazon download). It has it all-- their great percussion, wonderful piano, and an amazing bass line... one of the most gorgeous, well-integrated jazz type pieces I've ever heard. Keston and Westdal are inordinately talented composers, way beyond the level of what's being produced now. This is the first CD I've ever bought in my life where I truly love every song (usually if I find even two songs I like on a CD, I consider it not a loss). So if you like any of it, buy all of it-- every song is unique but has the same wonderful musicianship and complexity.

Ward (b. 1917) writes the kind of American Romanticism that puts him in line behind Roy Harris and Howard Hanson. Not a bad line to be in. Ward's music is tonal and, in places, exuberant (as in Jubilation Overture from 1945). His Symphony 4 (1958), the major work here, is part of that same Midwestern legacy. The Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra (1983) comes from the composer's interest in jazz and swing from his World War II years playing in the 7th Infantry Division's own swing band. The music is not dated, though. Sonic Structure (1980) is more abstract, but still tonal and lucid in its details. --Paul Cook
