Barely live at Buddy's Place: anorexic version of Buddy's big band.......2006-07-26

Buddy showed countless times that he could be a responsive, sensitive and supportive small-ensemble drummer when Norman Granz practically used him as a Verve house drummer in the '50's, but as this album makes clear he was not cut out to be a small group leader. Even though he's employed a couple of creative, expressive players on this occasion--pianist Kenny Barron and altoist Sonny Fortune--he's thinking in terms of a driving big band, from the uniforms to the electric bass player. This was an interesting experiment, motivated by financial as much as creative considerations, but the results are predictably unsatisfying. The music is strident, narrow, monotextured. It's small wonder that the group along with Buddy's club did not succeed. Count it a blessing that Buddy found his way back to the helm of a swinging big band.

I can think of dozens of unreissued LP's that deserve to be digitized ahead of this one.

Terry at Buddy's Place.......2005-10-28

This is Clark Terry's second big band album made for Vanguard, made two years after the first and with a much different personnel. This is a modern big band and they make no bones about it. MODUS OPERANDI is an ambitious Ernie Wilkins tune that features Chris Woods on alto in a fiery solo. GAP SEALER is a slow ballad by Jimmy Heath with Wilkins playing soprano. SWISS AIR by Wilkins is a real swinger with a long soprano solo credited to Frank Wess on the liner, but more likely is Ernie Wilkins again. Terry is his usual lyrical self on the fleugelhorn. Although I liked the earlier CD better, this one is a solid, swinging affair.

Sweet BR.......2001-06-18

This is one of my favorite albums, but maybe it's because I'm a chick! I think it is the sweetest Rich sound around...other than the vocal album, (rare to find) The Voice is Rich. Sierra Lonely was a haunting piece, but even more so now that the BR is gone, (but never, never forgotten).

This was one of my favorite CD's when I first started listening to jazz, especially jazz drummers, in high school. I bought three B. Rich CD's and got rid of the other two within two years but I have bought this one twice and plan to buy it again. A good, solid, enjoyable chunk of music. "Nica's Dream" in particular is on my personal internal soundtrack; I've been humming and singing it for years, with accompannying chest drumming for the breakdowns, particularly when it's closing and cleanup time at the current job. Good physical music with guts, flow, punch, and soul and yes, it jams. Not a classic; not recommended as a building block for the foundation of a serious jazz library, thus the four stars, but buy it as soon as your collection is on its feet and you are ready for a little true fun.

Lay it down.......2000-04-30

Sweet cd, a little short on length, but its so good. This one isn't centered around the drums, and there aren't any real big drum solos. Its just a mix of some different styles of music with Buddy playing along, showing off his real talent, which is jiving with the band, laying down a beat, and tapping it up every once and again. It doesn't have the big band blast sound, but more of a jiving one. The rest of the band goes off on amazing tangets and solos, while the whole time Buddy is both keeping the beat and throwing in complex shots to liven it up.
