A wonderfully warm debut CD as a leader from Tom Kirkpatrick.......1999-10-01
Trumpeter Tom Kirkpatrick and his trio (Andrea Pozza on piano and Bibi Rovere on bass) have produced a wonderful album in tribute to the late Chet Baker. The songs (Line For Lyons, Bernie's Tune, Day Break and 7 others) are mostly associated with Mr. Baker, and represent material from throughout Chet's career. The tempos range from ballads to medium, and all feature the inventive, lyrical lines of Mr. Kirkpatrick. Tom seems to have an endless supply of fresh lines in all of his solos. My favorite is the seldom-heard medium swinger Somewhere In the Night. The "mood" in this set is late night, much like many of Mr. Baker's own trio albums from his later European years. This album deverves many close listens. May we hear more from Tom Kirkpatrick soon.
