Here are three dozen pieces of music, all played by Yo-Yo Ma, culled from his extensive discography. Aside from the technical mastery and beautiful tone that are absolutes in all of his playing, one is dazzled by his curiosity and ability to adapt to so many forms and types of music. His Bach and Vivaldi are pellucid and played with non-sentimental crispness, his tango music gritty and rhythmically pungent, his jazz seemingly spontaneous, the "Meditation" from Thais simply ravishing, "Anything Goes" a romp, and the Appalachian music performed with both respect and a great twang, while the traditional Chinese music is fascinating. It's really a matter of how much Ma loves whatever he plays here, how entirely he becomes involved in it, and what a fine partner he invariably is to other musicians. This collection is a doozy--it is truly "essential." --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
pure genius.......2007-05-21
No instrument asks more from the soul of an artist as the cello does.
Yo Yo Ma shows to be master of the instrument and his interpretations en technique are pure genius. Everyone should have this album in his (or hers of course) basic classical collection
Another great Yo-Yo Disc.......2007-05-15
The set-up with the classical pieces on the first disc and the other on the second is excellent.
first disc great- second a flop.......2007-04-12
the first disc is awesome. the second disc is weird and boring.
Encore.......2007-03-31
Incredible. My young cellist (son) loves it. Beautiful music. The album is well organized and each song transitions nicely.
The Versatile Yo-Yo Ma.......2007-03-29
I've found this collection to be extremely delightful! It gives you a sense of the versatility of Yo-Yo Ma like no other, with one disc being dedicated more to his classical side, while the other explores jazz and world music venues. Not your typical "greatest hits" collection.

The Last Unicorn.......2007-05-19
This was my favorite movie as a child and i loved the music.
Soundtrack, The Last Unicorn.......2007-02-20
Takes me back when I was young and used to watch the Movie.
Beautiful and Innocent...........2007-01-10
This type of genious does not come around often. The music is magical and beautiful, conjuring up the images from the movie perfectly. America has a great soulful sound.
Eat your heart out Disney- this is what a real animated film should be like.
Beautiful soundtrack!.......2007-01-10
This soundtrack has wonderful sound quality and includes all of the compositions I remember from the movie. The instrumentals are gorgeous. A must-have for any fan of the movie!
Unicorn Music.......2007-01-04
Okay, so the person singing "Now that I'm a Woman" song isn't Mia Farrow. And the whole casing is in German. No big. First of all, I honestly believe that only die-hard fans of the original movie will notice the different female singers. Secondly, all the other songs--at least the lyrical ones--are exactly the same; the ones sung by America anyway. Although, I think they kept the original male singer in "That's all I have to Say"...
As for the album being in a language only half of us will truly understand? No worries, the songs are in English, and if you really want to know what the back cover says, it's easy to find the movie and get the production notes, especially with the movie now on DVD. For that matter, the song titles on the back are also in English, whihc is odd given that the rest of the casing is in German....
All in all, I enjoy this CD. I have the original flim, but it was getting difficult to keep fast forwarding and rewinding becuase I didn't want to watch the whole flim, just listen to "Man's Road" or "In the Sea". Now that I have uploaded this on my Ipod--something I needed the CD for, cause you aren't going to find the songs anywhere on Itunes Music Store--I can listen to whatever song I want without fiddling with my VCR. The movie has always and will always be a favorite--and the music plays a large part of why--music I now have. (The other half of why is becuase I'm a unicorn lover.)
And that's all I have to say.

Customer Reviews:
Movie Music.......2005-09-26
If you love the film the music that goes with it makes building U Boat models just that much more fun as well as reading books about the subject. It's like a sound track for U Boat books.
The Songs the Das Boot CD didn't have..........2002-10-29
I fell in love with the Das Boot movie and soon after, the hard-to-get soundtrack. It brings the magic of the movie to my car or Discman anywhere I go. Thank you SO much!
To satisfy one reviewer's disappointment, the original "J'attendrai" and "Tipperary" songs are available at the following site: http://www.schiffsmodelle.via.t-online.de/download.html. They should've been included on the soundtrack, but I hope this helps. This fills a BIG gap in completing the total magic of Das Boot. Best to you!
Soundtrack for Silent Hunter 2.......2001-08-15
This is, of course, the soundtrack to the greatest submarine movie ever made, but it is also a good soundtrack to Silent Hunter 2, which will probably be the greatest WW2 submarine simulation game ever made.
The CD in itself is good, but does not include "Tipperary" as sung by the Red Army Chorus and which provides a memorable moment in the film.
-Tom
That Song.......2000-09-08
If you love "Das Boot" this CD is a must, but there are those among us who ask why they didn't include the Tipperary song and particularly, "What is that French song?"
Fans will remember the scene when the captain asks the radio operator to play a certain record for him. The radio man smiles and plays, "J'attendrai" by Rina Ketty, but it isn't included in the soundtrack and the producers fail to list this recording in the end credits of the film.
If you, like the captain, love this recording...it is available on Amazon.com on a great CD entitled "Les Grandes Chansons Francaises: Classic Hits of French Song" on band #3. These are recordings that helped sustain Europeans who lived through World War II and, like the captain, remind them of better times. Listen, especially, to the anthem of those days, band #14, "Parlez-Moi D'Amour" by Lucienne Boyer.

Performed in 1930 by the cast and orchestra of the 1928 Berlin premiere (except for Willi Trenk-Trebitsch, the Mackie of the 1929 Prague premiere), this extraordinary recording must be the last word in genuine, unvarnished "authenticity." Even the remastered sound is amazingly good and life-like. The half-spoken, half-sung delivery captures the biting sarcasm of Brecht's text as well as the abrasive bitterness and sinuous lyricism of Weill's melodies, underlined by the punchy, swinging rhythms and indigenously jazzy sound of the orchestra. The result is an uncanny evocation of a historical period and its atmosphere. One can smell the smoky nightclub air, see the garish colors, and feel the unbridled sensuousness. This "abridged" version offers 13 familiar numbers, with most strophic repeats omitted, but includes alternate versions of several songs--four in French, two sung by Brecht himself. There are also two songs from Mahagonny, a long "scene" by Wilhelm Grosz, and two songs each by Rudolf Nelson and Friedrich Hollaender (who wrote the music for the film "The Blue Angel), two of them sung by Marlene Dietrich with her inimitable lascivious sensuality. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful original recording, plenty extras. .......2006-09-11
In quick summary:
- If you're at all familiar with the Dreigroschenoper and all its incarnations, be sure to buy this album. It's the closest you could get to an 'original'.
- If you're completely new to the Threepenny story, I would recommend starting with the 1999 Nina Hagen concert version instead. It's got all the songs left out here, better recording quality, and a more modern approach to the music.
This is not a complete collection of original cast Dreigroschen songs. Rather, it's a selection of the best tracks from the play, often censored and cut short (in all the usual ways), and filled up with seemingly random extras in the genre.
The performers are all quite brilliant, and it's refreshing to hear a 3P without all the screaming and biting from recent versions. Though the songs are by no means slow, they're much more relaxed, more saccharine I would say, than what they've later evolved into. I love both type interpretations, but I often prefer this one.
One very nice bonus is the inclusion of a handful Threepenny songs in French. Otherwise pretty hard to come by. Also, the famous final lines of the movie version (Moritat reprise) are present, which I've only seen in one other recording (the 1981, also led by Miss Lotte Lenya). All in all, an essential CD for Brecht/Weill fans.
This one is really fine. .......2006-03-03
I've been a three-penny freak ever since I was a hanger-on at a Stanford production 40 years ago directed by a Brecht associate from Berlin. It's wonderful to get the authentic original cast records. I really like the added Berlin Chansons, too. "Don't Goggle at that Tango Dancer, Keep Your Eyes on the Guy You Came with!" Or Marlene Dietrich, with "Jonny, When it's Your Birthday, I'll Be Your Guest for a Night."

Brilliant vintage hamonics!.......1999-07-21
The Comedy Harmonists were an a close harmony group who recorded in Germany from '28 to the late '30's. They were harassed and force to disband because of Nazi disapproval of their semitic origins as well as their avant-guarde, jazz-oriented material. They sing here in German and English doing everything from folk songs to Tea for Two with clarity, musical grace and lightness. Their comic songs are very deft and witty. If you enjoy close harmonics, you will find this recording a revelation.

One of the most staggeringly beautiful recordings ever
made on this planet. Very, very deep. A classic ECM
masterpiece from the 70's. I first bought the lp when
I was in college and spent MANY afternoons and nights
in blissful relaxation listening to this haunting work
of art. Gismonti is not only an incredible guitarist
(the first half and final section prove that), but he
is an awesome pianist as well. His composition "Tango"
in the second half with him on solo piano is breathtaking.
You close your eyes and just dream. So very beautiful.
This is NOT new age George Winston. FAR from it. What
a fantastic artist and composer Gismonti is. Check this
out. It's a rewarding experience for serious open minds
and ears. A trillion stars.
The true masterpiece.......2005-08-16
As you hear to this music, you will enjoy one of the most singular and beautiful musical experiences one can ever have. Egberto Gismontis' sincerity, and his sense of touch, rhythm and musical spirit goes far beyond any standard, and reaches a realm of freedom and beauty that truly enhances our cultural condition, remaining as "a thing of beauty", sublime and lasting forever. Alone or in the context of his whole work, this recording expresses one of the most original musical minds of this centuries (XX and XXI). So, take your time, make sure nothing will brake your listening, and do enjoy this musical rite as a true ascension to the heights of beauty.
Late 70's album annoucing 80's evolution in Gismonti style.......2004-12-13
Gismonti has been amazingly prolific in making many great albums from early 70's up to mid 90's.
Typically, his music is somewhat "rough" but very powerfull, emotive, rich, risky and bold during all the 70's. It is mostly acoustic work with many Gismonti's vocals too. It is a little difficult to access because of the complexity; but once you are in, it will stay with you forever. Most of this earlier work is under EMI or lately reissued under Gimsonti's CARMO labels.
The 80's are a transition period from pure acoustic to a mix between acoustic and electric instruments; Gismonti's vocals tend to disapear. Typically, the music becomes less provocative and more polite than earlier Gismonti's work. It is somewhat more civilized and more easy to access. Yet, the music remains highly sophisticated and creative; but with little less (good or bad?) surprise. Lots of these albums are under ECM label.
The 90's are a period where Gismonti's Group was founded. The music move towards more classical style: very polite, distinctive, fluid and elegant. Yet, there is still this amazing creativity, complexity and freshness of all Gismonti's works.
A few movie music albums are part of this period too (Kuarup, Amazonia). They tend to have more electronic effects but they stay into the elegant distinctive spirit of Gismonti's group latest compositions. Most of these albums are under ECM or CARMO labels.
About DANCA DAS CABECAS, it is a great album which retains all the provocative (but fantastic) style of 70's Gismonti, but with a more refined approach annoucing his work of the 80's. Gismonti's vocals are gone in this album (like most 80's albums); it is purely instrumental. This album keeps the full magic of earlier Gismonti's style: a paradoxal music that always stands in an unstable and unpredictable position between violent rage and fragil delicacy. This album takes a lot of inspiration from amazonian sounds; it is as mysterious as Amazonia forest can be. A true invitation to musical exploration. Highly recommended.
Please, check my other reviews of Gismonti's albums if you wish.
Some of the most memorable music ever written.......2003-01-25
This is the sort of music that stays with you for the rest of your life. In my case, Egberto's music was a window that brought light and fresh air in the middle of the terror and concentration camps of Argentina in the 70's.
I remember saving money, week after week, in order to be able to get these early ECM recordings, as well as the imports from the brazilian labels.
In one of his presentations in Buenos Aires during this horrible period, Egberto was denied the use of the Steinway piano at the concert hall, since according to the theater officials, he wasn't a "classical pianist". Thank God, an even better, German-made Steinway was produced before the concert started.
In the process, Egberto was kind enough to give these bureaucrats a little lesson in the fine art of temperature and humidity control as it pertained to the preservation of the piano he was denied access to. Just a fine example of the kind of person Gismonti really is.
Egberto meet Nana by chance, in Paris, as he was on his way to Oslo, for the recording of this music. It was to be a "solo" album at first. But the meeting proved to be a blessing. These dear musicians made one of the most memorable recordings of music that I can think of, only hours after the first meet each other.
I always have the same dream at night: Egberto and Astor Piazzolla, side by side, sitting in front of a very long music score, making revisions, composing, giving us some of the most memorable and lasting bodies of music ever. They have indeed done just that, each in their own particular way, and we are better human beings, thanks to them.
Essential.......2001-08-31
If you're not familiar with Egberto Gismonti's music, I'd start with this one. Not that it's the most accessible one, but simply because this one will deeply touch you, most likely. It's my favorite one, among the 15-some CDs I got. When I heard this one in my early 20s, it totally changed my musical horizon, and opened doors. This music seems as pure and intuitive as it could be. It's pure emotion, while its musicality and complexity are beyond the reach of most of us fellow musicians. Gismonti and Vasconcelos are going beyond the bondaries of any classification. There is something of the native amazonian forest people in there, there is classical music too, probably due to Gismonti's classical piano training with Nadia Boulanger, and Villa-Lobos influence, there is lots of heart and emotions. I don't know many artists who have been able to reach such heights on both guitar and piano (Ralph Towner is probably the other one). I consider Nana Vasconcelos as the best percussionist of all times. Egberto and Nana are the most amazing duo. My 2 cents.

This auspicious, surprising, release debuted the Winter & Winter imprimatur, which carries on German producer Stefan Winter's longstanding role in blurring musical boundaries, as he did for so many years with the jazz label JMT. Pianist Uri Caine, known mainly for playing in the polystylistic mode of New York's downtown jazz scene, steeped himself in Mahler's music in preparation for the 1995 series of concerts leading up to this CD. Caine's ensemble--14 members strong, at points--recasts portions of Mahler's symphonic cloudbursts into a setting that smacks of klezmer, jazz, and crazy combinations of the scores' lavish bombastics. It's clear that Mahler's works tested the boundaries of so many available sounds at the turn of the century, from cantors to martial brass to Wagnerian bulk. Caine attempts it all, succeeding most somberly in the sections based on the Resurrection Symphony and most clangorously in the First Symphony's third movement, transformed into a serious klezmer bash by Caine, clarinetist Don Byron, and drummer Joey Baron. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
jaw-dropping interpretation of Mahler.......2006-12-03
I am a Mahler fan - and I don't like jazz! So I was rather nervous at listening to this first time around. But I found it simply stunning. The resurrection symphony slow movement, complete with screeching solo violin emulating a searingly distorted electric guitar was, in fact, profoundly moving. And the sheer musicianship of the performers, in the more sensitive sections earned my utmost respect. This album is shocking, unbearable, gripping, lighthearted, exciting, mocking, reverential, tender - everything Mahler was. Fantastic buy!
Mahler revered.......2006-11-16
On his 1997 release Urlicht / Primal Light, Uri Caine took some of Gustav Mahler's most famous compositions, and, well, jazzed them up, with some of the most prominent musicians on the downtown New York scene, including Dave Douglas and Joey Baron.
What still surprises me about this beautiful album is just how faithful Caine is to Mahler. Unlike his later Goldberg Variations, this isn't Mahler deconstructed, it's Mahler revered, in a small group jazz (and at times, thanks to Don Byron , klezmer) setting. It makes perfect sense -- if some of the greatest jazz performances have come from mediocre show tunes, why not use symphonies and lieder as a starting point for improvisation?
Uri Caine's mutiny against Mahler.......2006-09-30
I've been a big Mahler fan since Bernstein's first recording (4th Symphony) as well as a knowledgeable follower of jazz. These pieces are grotesque caricatures of Mahler melodies and while I have not heard Caine's other depredations, after listening to this one I think I'll pass. If this is something released after a jam session that somehow was rescued from the cutting room floor, my apologies. But Mahler's melodies do not belong in a setting like this and who is Caine to try to improve on Mahler's orchestrations? Save your money.
raw, gritty and fertile freshly tilled earth.......2005-12-13
it's not pure as in so many anally treated works of Mahler. admittedly i am not interested in listening to see if the sonority of the instruments is perfect to some pompous standard, and it's not but there is another dedication here and an unmeasurable energy. i love the youthfulness of this work.
The New quintessential performance of Mahler.......2005-07-06
This is the story i was told when buying this record, it's been many years so this is as close as i could remember it:
"There is an annual competition where orchestras from all over the world come together to perform Mahler pieces. It's been going many many years... then along came Uri Caine. His orchestra included Cantors (jewish religious singers) and a cacophony of other messy instruments and ideas to perform with. They won to competition to the horror of stuffy stuck-up Mahler purists the world over.. How could this horrible mess win over all ther other very traditional (very similar and boring) performances!? Uri Caine's orchestra has continued to win every year since. Why? Because Uri's interpretation gives a fuller understanding of Gustav Mahlers background, his roots, he brings so much life to the music."
So then i actually listened to the music myself and it was breathtaking, funny, it told stories, it had personality, it was bursting at the seams with new ideas.
I listen to all kinds of music, but rarely jazz and rarely classical. I was not familiar with Uri Caine or Gustav Mahler, but after hearing that story, then listening for myself i had to have this cd. And while often my purchases are terrible mistakes, this one was a resounding success. This cd is my most treasured.

Customer Reviews:
Stravinsky the Composer, not Stravinsky the Conductor.......2006-09-18
It is a pretty good collection, lots of music from Stravinsky's entire carreer, but one must keep in mind that Stravinsky was a brilliant composer, and not a commanding maestro. You will not necessarily be getting the best recordings of these works. For example, something like the Boulez/Cleveland Rite of Spring is far superior to those in this collection. He is a vastly better conductor, and is much more capable of making the orchestra perform Stravinsky's intentions than Stravinsky is. All in all, however, I am more than glad I own this set.
Staggering! All the Stravinsky I'll ever need!.......2006-05-20
While I had heard some Stravinsky compositions prior to my purchase, this was the first (and only) Stravinsky material I have ever owned. As a young music enthusiast, the draw to me was to hear these pieces as Stravinsky conducted them and to get so many of them at such a great price, not to have the original jackets for the purpose of reminiscing. So, as someone who needed a good jump start into the works of Stravinsky (by Stravinsky), this set has proven totally invaluable. And while more information could have been packed onto these cds, I do appreciate how closely these discs have stuck to the original releases. I don't know about the portion of Petroushka which some reviewers claim is missing (as I don't know any other version), but I was totally blown away at hearing this version of Petroushka anyhow. In all, for whatever faults some sticklers may find here or there with this set, the value of this material collected in such a way (and at such a price) by far outweighs any possible faults.
Magnificent!.......2006-03-02
A great collection. There is simply no substitute for hearing Stravinsky as the great composer wanted to have his music played. Here is so much and also so varied a collection. I have been enjoying this set a great deal. One of the 20th century's greatest composers conducting his own compositions.
Where's my Petrushka?.......2003-08-01
The main reason I bought this box is because I was introduced to Stravinsky's Petrushka in the spring of 2003, and I loved it.
Along with Rite of Spring I think it's the most brilliant music Mr. Stravinsky ever wrote...so, I've been listening to the 34-minute long 1960 CSO recording of it at least once a day since I first heard it, naturally sort of memorizing it, but it didn't fit when I made this CD spin. The recording of Petrushka in this box is the VERY SAME RECORDING (1960) that I'd listened to, but it's cut to a suite! It's only 24 minutes long. You can tell it's obviously cut at certain points if you're familiar with the uncut version. 10 WHOLE MINUTES ARE MISSING FROM "PETRUSHKA!" I was (and still am) very disappointed by this.
Familiarizing myself with the rest of the discs was very fulfilling, though; I love the Ebony Concerto with the Columbia Jazz Combo featuring Benny Goodman...but the "suite-cut" of Petrushka made me paranoid...I can't be sure if anything else is edited or not...
There are 75 pages of notes in the booklet about the recordings but only 1/3 is in English.
The special multimedia feature disc is nothing much. With awful graphics it features the same notes as in the booklet, and there are lyrics for those who want to use the box for karaoke.
These 400 minutes of music (an average of 45 minutes per disc) could fit on only 5 CD's instead of 9, but it seems that this collection is made for nostaligs who will love watching and touching these tiny LP-jackets - after all, it is called the "Original Jacket Collection."
Incidentally, all of Stravinsky's recorded work which he conducted himself is not in this box. It is not at all complete; aside from the missing part of "Petrushka," his own reading of "Symphony in Three Movements" is missing (but available on CBS.)
Hats off to the man himself anyway. The music is brilliant, and considering that these recordings are 40+ years old, the sound quality is very good. Excellent stereophony on Rite of Spring!
It's a good thing that his music is still available and that people are offering refurbished products thereof. But if you love Petrushka like I do...buy the real thing...this just might disappoint you...
The 3 stars is a compromise of the music and the package; (5 stars for the music & its quality - 1 star for the package, choice of discs and--considering the price--somewhat weak linear notes.)
legendary.......2002-06-30
This 9 cd set is an historical one...more than half of Stravinsky's works are collected in this set. i clearly can say that there isn't any better recording for Stravinsky's works. especcialy first released USA's national anthem and a 12 tone work "Fanfare for two Trumpets" are remarkable.and we can also mention that some noises during the recording procces (i.e: Stravinsky's turning the page of the partition) gives a different taste to the listener. This is a real golden box of music.

I dont own this cd yet, but i will. I listened to samples and this is a beautifull, famous, pure classical music... if there's anyone who doesn't agree with me they probably are not familiar with classical music or (maybe can't read!!) You will enjoy this cd though!
Poor Compilation.......2002-06-14
After just one listening to this cd, I had to stop. It is just such a poor compliation of music, the flow, the rythm, it is terrible. Unlike the #1 Opera album, which I enjoyed, this one is a throwback.
