Lester Young recorded for the Aladdin label between December 1945 and December 1947, leading a series of small groups that would range in size from quintets to a septet. While Young's solos were a marvelous paradox of the languid and the taut, his approach to putting a group together could be simply casual. His sidemen here come from both the ranks of the justly celebrated and the journeymen, whose names have all but disappeared from jazz history. The bands can include collisions of swing era stalwarts and dedicated boppers. Something of that's apparent in the first Aladdin session, where trombonist Vic Dickenson and pianist Dodo Marmarosa seem to have the blues in different languages on Young's eloquent "D.B. Blues." It seems to have mattered little to Young, who was in many ways a school of one. His playing here is usually at a level that others only dream about, creating a linear flow that has its own superior internal logic, whether the subject at hand is a standard, a blues, or an uptempo variant on "I Got Rhythm." His sound is one of the marvels of jazz, not just for its airy transparency but for its flexibility, the way a line is constantly shaded with gently honking punctuations and a hint of gravel. In addition to the Aladdin sessions, this two-CD set includes a 1942 trio date that's focused on standards and has Nat "King" Cole on piano and Red Callendar on bass. Young's solo on "Indiana" is one of his marvels of multidimensional swing. There's also a 1945 session with singer Helen Humes that has terrific input from trumpeter Snooky Young and altoist Willie Smith as well as Young. --Stuart Broomer

Amazon.com essential recording
Forty-three tracks of the seminal bluesman's recordings for Aladdin in the 1940s, The Complete Aladdin Recordings is a must-hear. Performing alone with his guitar or with sparse accompaniment--usually pianist Wilson "Thunder" Smith--Lightnin' dishes out the best of Texas country-blues. Starting off with "Katie May," Hopkins's first recording for Aladdin, the two-CD set winds its way through the guitarist's years with the label, showcasing what he was up to before his decline in popularity and eventual revival with the folk boom of the 1960s. Those expecting the almost-rock & roll of the latter period won't here any of that here, but they will hear its germination in such rollicking tunes as "Big Mama Jump" and "Let Me Play with Your Poodle." Definitely required, not only to hear the best of early Lightnin', but to hear the best of Texas country-blues. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
Great collection, but too clean.......2007-01-31
I love the assembly of songs, but to me they all seem too clean, too tame, and too "studio" ...versions of songs which he did better on other recordings. I have it and I'll keep it, but there are better sessions out there.
From the Cotton Patch to the Big City.......2001-12-08
Learning at the knee of legendary Bluesman Mance Lipscomb, Sam "Lightnin" Hopkins blazed an incendiary trail through the urban Texas landscape.
These early tracks show the base upon which he built through the 60's and 70's. His concerts were often legendary, including one unforgettable night when he played at the University of Houston, on the same night as Abbie Hoffman was giving a speech across town at Rice University, at a far more ballyhooed event.
I know for a fact, because I saw them, and I was one, that most campus politicos chose to attend to Lightnin' instead of Abbie. Us Texans do know our roots.
Unforgettable moments of his concerts included such nicities as his swigging from a half-pint of Bourbon, and playing for as long as the tips came in. Late in the evening, his foot would become loose and begin pounding out the rhythm of the bass lines which his drop-thumb played. And a sly grin would sneak across his life-worn face. This was when he would impart his greatest wisdom to us.
He's a legend who has been missed.
From a man who loves the blues:.......2001-09-03
Many bluesmen have come and gone, but certain ones seem to have been around forever. Their music predates the fancy new singers, and while those new guys rise and fall, the old bluesmen stay the same, unchanged by time and just as beautiful and appealing as ever before.
Lightnin' Hopkins is one of those classic blues singers. Like Robert Johnson, John Lee Hooker, and all the rest, Hopkins is one of the founders of the blues - whoever plays the blues today is merely standing on the shoulders of these legends.
This collection of Lightnin' Hopkins recordings is truly worth investing in. The quality of the music cannot be contested, and the enjoyment of listening to them cannot be underestimated. And you can't beat the price! Where else can you get over 40 classic blues tunes for this price?
If you enjoy classic blues: get this album, sit back, and watch the world around you slow down for a while.
An Overlooked Founding Father........2001-07-20
There is a lot of John Lee Hooker here, and a lot of other stuff as well...
There early stuff has the wonderful gritty feel of Hooker's early pieces like "Teachin the Blues," but then the two start to part company.
Lightnin' has an endearing high pitch vocal style that immediately seems wrong for a classic blues musician, but grows on the listener until you cannot imagine the music any other way.
The later recordings make use of fun upright piano and slightly rocky tempos.
Not as earthy as Hooker, not as blue as Muddy, not as orchestrated as B.B., Lightnin has nicely balanced sound that may not always stictly qualify as blues.
Please note: this is a two-disc set! For $12! Ka-Ching.
Blues as personal as a hushed conversation.......2000-05-12
Sam Hopkins was a throwback - a vanishing breed, the troubador, the street musician...and his music was/is intensely personal. Lightning's lyrics and delivery combined with his guitar licks and irregular measures are unique. It's not music to boogie to although I have; it's music to reflect on, to enjoy Lightning's wry humour and observations. Rough around the edges but that's part of its appeal. Most fans will tell you that he was like no other.

Customer Reviews:
Dark Lester.......2007-03-16
For a number of reasons, Lester Young's sound changed after he left the Basie Band. He changed the mouthpiece on his saxophone, resulting in a darker, lower tone; he suffered from disappointment and depression after leaving behind his buddies in the band for a career that never really took off afterward; his short stint in the army was a disaster; he was drinking and smoking more and more; and maybe he was just getting a little older and somber as well. The result is a collection of fragile, beautiful songs. Many fans don't care as much for this sound as they do for his early recordings, but for me, they are the most touching things he recorded. These are the successful recordings of his "dark" period, which fell apart during the fifties, making a mess of his career. But for this brief period, his genius really shines through.
Certainly a 5-star set........2004-01-28
This is a great set: a good place to begin, and would make a nice gift for almost anyone.
These Foolish Things.......2001-08-09
This collection covers a wide time-span in Lester's recording life and one can see a vast difference from first to last. The "early" (1942) cuts, with Nat King Cole are nimble and swinging on Lester's part - a tribute to his innate time when you consider they were recorded minus drums. "Indiana" and "Tea For Two" are particularly brilliant: very much like his Basie+Billie period recordings a few years before but with a touch of the ethereal. It is a treat to hear Lester stretch for more than a chorus or two. The radical change in Lester came (NOT with the advent of WW11 as some reviewers suggest) AFTER Lester's return from his disastrous army stint in 1945. His timing never quite recovers and he tends to rely on his own cliches. That being said, there are moments of absolute genius and beauty in his 1945-1958 period. Thankfully this record captures his gorgeous 1945 rendition of "These Foolish Things" - certainly one of the great ballad performances in the history of jazz! Every phrase is a song itself. This alone is worth the price of the recording. "D.B. Blues" is also a gem of Lester's swing and beautiful sound.
Excellent small band jazz.......2000-05-13
Unavoidably, Lester Young's recorded output is compared with his pre-WWII recordings. While not in the same class, these recordings are still very good. The main difference may well be in the players supporting Lester Young. Many sidemen are effective rather than exceptional. On the other hand, the spotlite throughout these sessions is on Lester Young. While his playing has changed, as compared to the 1930s, it is hard to argue that the change is for the worse. He has just continued to develop, while remaining a great musician.
Lester at his very best, a must........1999-01-17
After receiving my C.D. Lester Young I could not stop playing it. Lester was past his best when he made these recordings ( or so the experts will tell us) they must have missed these records. The soft tone ,those beautiful bent notes this is a two C.D. set not to be missed. Lester at his very best. Put this on your must buy list.

Art Pepper made a name for himself in the early 1950s as a West Coast alto saxophonist who could play the complex harmonies of bop, but was not a slavish imitator of Charlie Parker. Pepper's intelligently-structured soloing was the epitome of California cool. Modern Art, recorded after he had served time in jail on drug charges, is a reissue of 1956 and 1957 sessions recorded for Alladin with either Russ Freeman or Carl Perkins on piano, Ben Tucker on bass, and Chuck Flores on drums. "Blues In" opens the session with a fine example of Pepper's soloing style. The swing classic "Stompin' at the Savoy" is an unbridled joy. "Cool Bunny," the two takes of "Diane's Dilemma," and alternate takes of "Fascinating Rhythm" and "Begin the Beguine" are other highlights. --John Swenson
Customer Reviews:
Art Pepper at his best.......2007-05-26
If you like the dreamy, smoothe style of Art Pepper, don't miss this one. I am now searching for Volume one, but so far, no luck.
Masterpiece.......2007-04-28
Pepper here is light years ahead of most in the business at the time. All you need to do is listen to his cover of SUMMERTIME and you'll see. It's probably one of jazz's most unrecognized masterpieces. His duets with Tucker are also far ahead of time. Pure pleasure, Modern Art.
One of the best jazz albums.......2005-03-21
I own hundreds of jazz cd's, and sometimes someone wants to know if I have a favorite. I can't say I have one favorite, but this is up there in the top 5. I recommend this CD to any serious jazz fan who somehow has overlooked one of the most talented sax players ever, anyone interested in "cool" jazz, anyone trying out jazz for the first time, and any jazz musician looking to hear some inspiring solo work. It's a true album, where every track belongs, and it plays well, in order, from start to finish, over and over again.
Consummate West Coast Cool Jazz.......2000-09-06
The cover can tell you a lot about this CD. I think the photograph exactly typifies a time, a life-style, a mood. This is the late-Fifties West Coast jazz world we're in. A good-looking young man dressed in a sharp suit, white shirt and understated tie, sits at a table with his faithful saxophone at his elbow, an abstract painting hanging on the wall behind him. His expression is a mixture of cool, detached concentration, with maybe just a hint of the assured, almost surly, "who-gives-a-s**t" rebel. I don't know who took this photograph or whether others from the same session were ever used, but it is an image that I think matches the music to perfection. It seems unfair to single out a track for special mention - the whole mood of the album just cruises along at a very high standard. It sounds like a bunch of musicians who are just enjoying themselves, confident they are excelling at their craft on the day. "Hey guys, we're good, and we don't care who knows it." The only minor negative I would offer is the recording sound. This isn't hi-fi demonstration material. If you're a real hi-fi enthusiast it may seem a bit shallow and with slightly unnatural tones to some of the instruments. However, it is clean and dynamic, and the tracks are played with such enthusiasm and ability that the quality of the music shines through. This is great listening and thoroughly recommended.
Great Album.......1999-11-16
this is a wonderful album, my first venture into Art Pepper and I can't get enough! For those still new to Jazz, this is a great album to get your feet wet with.

The Omega Tapes!.......2000-06-13
Here are the famous "Omega Tapes," a cookin' session with a perfect rhythm section. The definitive version of "Holiday Flight" and killer playing on "Webb City" and "Begin the Beguine." All in all, one of the best 1950's sessions from Pepper--right up there with the Contemporary Records classics that followed it.
My 2nd favorite Art Pepper disc.......1999-07-06
This music is from Art Pepper's greates session. It competes with Modern Art in contention for his best recording. The recording quality is excellent (even by today's standards) although a couple of the 12 tracks are a bit crackly. Most of it is essential.

Hopkins revels in the limitless possibilities of 12-bar Texas blues. With his ability to improvise clever lyrics and his penchant for subtle modifications in rhythm and structure, Hopkins's music was remarkably fresh despite a relative lack of stylistic variety. Because of his idiosyncratic tendencies, Hopkins almost always recorded as a solo artist. However, the first 13 of these 43 cuts include barrelhouse pianist Wilson Smith, adding spice to the music. Unbelievably, the final 26 cuts are from one marathon solo session of February, 1948, including up-tempo country-flavored boogies and slower, intense blues workouts. Hopkins's urgent guitar work--featuring powerful strumming, forceful single-string runs, and piercing double stops--remains an inspiration to a variety of instrumental disciples. --Marc Greilsamer

Pepper is cool.......2003-05-05
This album embodies the West Coast Cool sound of the late 50's/early 60's. Pepper is unfailingly melodic and lays back behind the beat. It's much different than the explosive approach of Charlie Parker. "Your Mean to Me" which includes vibes is a perfect example of the ambience. "Mambo de la Pinta" is a great pick-me-up. My mood is always better after hearing that selection. If you like straight-ahead melodic jazz of that era I think you will enjoy this album. A wonderful musician expressing a particular time and place.
Great bebop........2000-08-07
My vinyl copy of this is badly warped, so it's a pleasure to have the digital version. With an artist as prolific as Art Pepper was it's hard to come right out and say that any collection of tracks was his BEST, but this is one the things I listen to most often. Both volumes are highly recommended, and by rights should be packaged in one jewel case. For anyone new to Pepper, check out "Yardbird Suite," "Straight Life," or "You Go To My Head" (or anything else on this CD for that matter) for proof that he was a first-echelon bopper.

Great music.......2006-01-27
Floyd's early music can be found on three CDs, though two of them are getting harder to find. Cow Town Blues contains his earliest sides, from 1948-1950. This one spans the years 1949-1952, and Marshall Texas is my Home covers 1953-1957 and is the one that contains the original 'Hey Bartender.' Then Floyd disappeared for 40 years, living in a skid-row hotel at one point, and then started cutting some find music again in 1992 and is still going at it today.
The main reason I'm writing this though is to counter another review that says there's no liner notes. Mine came with a 27-page booklet full of well-composed liner notes and a sessionography, as did every other release in this series, with varying page counts. That reviewer must have gotten a bad (or used?) copy.
Complete Aladdin Recordings - Floyd Dixon.......2005-06-28
A wonderful primer. Very enjoyable collection and worth obtaining if you know little but want to hear more - BUT beware, there are almost no liner notes ... which is a big omission for such a large collection of songs.
Excellent West Coast blues.......2003-05-02
If you love Charles Brown style blues.. this is similiar stuff with a bit more jump to it. That may sound like I`m damning it with faint praise,..NO WAY!! Charles Brown is the king of the heap as far as this kind of music goes. This is great material sung by a master. If your in second place to a Michael Jordan.. that doesn`t mean you can`t 'ball" :)

Uncle "Pee Wee" a true blues "Ax-men.".......2006-05-02
Although Uncle "Pee Wee" was certainly unremitting influenced by his close friend and pioneering mastre of the electric blues guitar, "T-Bone" Walker (what axe-handler wasn't during the immediate postwar era?); however, Uncle "Pee Wee" Crayton brought enough "heat" to the table and daring innovation to his playing to avoid being labeled as a mere "T-Bone" Walker copy-"kat."
Crayton's recorded over the years for Modern, Vee-Jay, Aladdin & Imperial Recordings and Blind Pig Records, were you can find plenty of dazzling, marvelously imaginative guitar work and distinct vocals, especially on stunning instrumental tracks like "Texas Hop," "Pee Wee's Boogie," and "Poppa Stoppa."
As a young teen in the early 70's, I was extremely fortunate to experience the greatness of his "vibes" up close and personal... On many occasions, I would soak-up like a sponge and weld to memory those rare meetings when the "Texas 3" is what I called them...(1) Uncle "Pee Wee" (2) "T-Bone" Walker & (3) "Big Joe" Turner (another pioneering mastre blues singer, even though he was born in Kansas City, MO., he sur' sang like he was from the state of Texas...). Sometimes, Jimmy "Guitar" Nolan Sr. would jump in and get together at uncle "Pee Wee's" house in West Los Angeles, California, and rehearse all day on Saturdays or Sunday afternoons up until the late evenings...just before going to there "gig" at The Perisan Room (a defunct legendary popular "nite-spot" during the 1960's - late '80's located on the southwest corner of La Brea Avenue & Washington Blvd., of which now sits a U.S. Postal Station)...
Those were exhilarating times to say the least!
*Note, And, no his music is not public domain yet...

Outstanding Material.......1999-09-04
Pee Wee Crayton's Imperial material is by far his best. He learned how to play guitar from the master himself, T-Bone Walker. He went on to record some wonderful T-Bone infused original blues. Like others have mentioned, it is most unfortunate that this disc is OOP. However, the search for it and cost at a bit of a premium is well worth it.
classics of Pee Wee Crayton.......1999-09-01
This CD contains Pee Wee Crayton's blues classics of the good old days. The sound is raw. Pee Wee's vocal is young and smooth. Conversations with rythm section is humorous. Good CD. So, I say go for it!
outstanding!.......1999-08-30
Pee Wee is known as one of the most jazzy blues master. His orchestration has quite a different flavour. Influenced by T-Bone Pee Wee's guitar swings, however the way he communicates with other instruments is somewhat different. When the piano throws a tril, Pee Wee's guitar does not respond spontaneously... there is some moment before he responds. This creates a different groove, and unique atmosphere of Pee Wee's blues.
Such a great CD..........1999-08-23
This is such a great blues CD. I do not understand why the record company stopped making. You will recognize how great it is only from the samples. You can also see several blues CD reviews. Pee Wee has quite a few CDs released. This is the best of all.
