Album Description

Sweden's Draconian return with their second release, Arcane Rain Fell. This is pure Gothic/Doom Metal: gentle and pleasing, bittersweet and cutting. Melancholic female vocals harmoniously compliment heavy guitars and atmospheric keyboard lines, with aggressive male vocals giving the tracks an added edge. Draconian perfectly balances heaviness and melody, and will charm fans of both the gothic and doom genre.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!!!.......2006-07-06

This album is very very impressive. It is probably my vote for album of the year in 05. Everything is perfect from start to finish. The vocal delivery is spot on, the guitars are intense and subtle, the percussion and bass are clear and HEAVY. This is surely one of the best albums I've ever owned. After listening to this, other great albums have been bumped down a notch. The lyrics these guys come up with are beautiful.

If you are into doom and death, just do your self a favor and add this to your collection- you will thank me.

5 out of 5 stars 60 minutes of beautifully executed despair........2006-05-21

Somehow I missed out on Draconian's debut album "Where Lovers Mourn", which is surprising considering just how much this band fits into my taste classifications. What we have here is doom / death metal in its purest, most beautiful, desperate form, with male death vocals, exquisite female vocals, crushing riffs and atmosphere galore. Being that some of my favourite bands are My Dying Bride, Swallow the Sun, Rapture etc., this formula is guaranteed to grab my attention, but that's not to say that I'm not critical of albums in this style when they're not up to the high standards set by the above listed bands.

Right from the outset, "Arcane Rain Fell" is beautifully bleak and emotionally powerful with rain and thunder setting the mood and increasing the effectiveness of the slow melodious dirge that follows. In fact, the first track "A Scenery of Loss" is the highlight of the album for me, being a 9 minute epic that showcases the songwriting abilities of these Swedish doomsters. It also displays how effective female vocals can be used in doom when it's done properly. Lisa has a fantastic voice that isn't too operatic, and instead both tender and powerful.

There is definitely an obvious similarity to My Dying Bride and Novembers Doom in Draconian's music, but that can only be a good thing in my book, and it's not distractingly so. I guess the only thing I will complain about is their occasional use of speed. The band definitely works best during the slower intense sections. When they do try to change the pace, which is a perfectly good thing to do, they tend to chug along a bit like early My Dying Bride used to do before "Turn Loose the Swans". But I guess it really just makes it all the more satisfying when they crunch back down into doomier realms. What's amazing, is that I have found myself enjoying this album immensely and I can already place the name Draconian up with all the above mentioned bands without them looking out of place.

If you're even slightly into the darker side of doom, then "Arcane Rain Fell" is a classic and you can buy it blindly. It's 60 minutes of beautifully executed despair.

5 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE.......2005-12-10

First off, I am old enough to write a review. But, I don't wanna make an account. Anyway, onto the album.

This album is incredible, and I don't even like Doom Metal music that much.Draconian is the only Doom Metal band I really love. Like someone else said, Draconian sounds like a mixture of My Dying Bride, Opeth, and Tristania.

The vocals in this band are incredible. You can actually feel the pain they are feeling. It may even make you cry. I love Anders's growls and screams and talking. Except for just hearing growling, you can feel his pain and it is beautiful yet so sad. Lisa has an amazing voice; Beautiful and full of emotion.

All of the songs are really great, but long.
1. A Scenery Of Loss- Great song. I love everything about it. Simply great, and a wonderful way to start off the album. 10/10
2. Daylight Misery- This is another great song. I love the lyrics in the chorus so much. 10/10
3. The Apostasy Canticle- Here it is, the best song on the album. It's fantastic. My favorite part is in the middle when Anders is talking and the guitars sounds so awesome and pretty. Lisa has no part in it, though. Still incredible and my favorite. 10/10
4. Expostulation- This song isn't really anything, just talking and some choir in the backround. But you know what? I love it still! 10/10
5. Heaven Laid In Tears (Angels Lament)- Another great song. I love Lisa's backround humming while Anders is screaming. 10/10
6. The Abhorrent Rays- Probably the worst song on the album, yet I still like it. I adore the opening riff, but then it doesn't get so great form then on. Still a good song, though. 8/10
7. The Everlasting Scar- Oh my god, this song is SO sad. It's incredible, though. But the last few sentences Anders screams...oh my god, it will bring tears to your eyes. Everyone can relate to what he is saying. Amazing song, yet very sad. 10/10
8. Death, Come Near Me- Unfortunately, I have never heard the full 15 minutes of this song, I have only heard the 4:28 version. That version I think is very good. Sad, but great. 10/10

The lyrics are incredible. Very sad, touching and moving. I love Anders!

Overall, this album is just incredible. It's a depressing album but still fantastic. I wasn't crazy about it at first, but now I am! Even if you don't like Doom Metal, still get this. Highly recommended for a metal fan.

5 out of 5 stars an album not to forget..........2005-07-13

in my opinion, this album "Arcane Rain Fell" is the most true to doom metal i have ever heard. the music is depressing, and very vengeful, as are the lyrics. the music is very instrumental and not boring to listen to. the lyrics are truly meaningful and wonderful, with just a little bit of old english thrown in, just a little bit (like the lovely thy's and becomeths). the growls by Anders Jacobbson are AMAZING (he is personally my favorite vocalist). i have never heard someone growl so well, that it seems like he is actually depressed and really is screaming like an angry vengeful person would. another plus for the growls is that it is clear and not forced (Anders voice is truly wonderful). DRACONIAN is the best true-to-doom metal band out there... give them a try, visit their website, you will not be disappointed... this is my favorite doom metal band out there. I cannot say which bands are similar to DRACONIAN, simply because the so-called "doom" metal bands are completely off. No, Draconian is not like Tristania. Draconian makes doom music, TRISTANIA "Widows Weeds" makes gothic music. but anyway.... if you like TRISTANIA, give Draconian a try. hopefully you will have made the right choice... Besides DRACONIAN my other favorite true-to-doom metal is THE SHAPE OF DESPAIR (very depressing and slow funeral doom).

5 out of 5 stars Heartbreakingly Beautiful.......2005-06-05

It is clear from first listening to this masterpiece that Draconian owe an obvious debt to My Dying Bride. From the opening sounds of rain and thunder and the painful, wailing guitar sequences, you would be forgiven for thinking that this is the latest release from the English grand masters of doom metal. So originality is clearly not Draconian's strong point, but creating an hour's worth of atmosphere, horror and wonder most certainly is. This album requires patience and concentration, and if you are willing to put in the effort you will be rewarded by a deeply moving experience which will live with you long after the album's closing moments. Throughout, Anders Jacobsson's death growls are perfectly complemented by the haunting beauty of Lisa Johansson's clear, operatic voice. This cannot be recommended highly enough. If you like painful, morbid doom metal, this is one for you.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A nice overview of Caruso's legacy.......2007-01-04

Enrico Caruso was one of the first "media stars," with his recordings selling widely in the early twentieth century; he helped popularize the recording industry. He was one of the leading tenors of his day, and is regarded as one of the tops of the twentieth century (although he began serious singing in the late 19th century).

This CD features some of his "greatest hits," among which are his well reputed version of "Vesti la giubba" (from I Pagliacci, one of his signature operas); arias from Verdi's Rigoletto, including the bold "Questa o quella" and "La donna e mobile"; some of his most popular recordings from Puccini, including "E lucevan le stelle," "Recondita armonia," and "Che gelida manina." Nice additions to the CD are wonderful ensemble pieces, such as the sextet from Lucia di Lammermoor (including the voice of Luisa Tetrazzini) and the quartet from Rigoletto (with Amelita Galli-Curci).

Interesting tidbits include his first recording, from 1902, and his last, from 1920.

All in all, this is a very nice representation of his work. I'm not sure that it compares with the old LP (with him in clown outfit) that includes Rossini's nearly unsingable "La danza," among other items. But it is a terrific introduction to the art of Caruso. Anyone who has not listened to this tenor's works before would be well advised to use this as their entree to his oeuvre.

    5 out of 5 stars Unearthly.......2002-12-23

Forget toiling for a BMW, enjoy finer things in life. One of my personal favorites is ''Le pecheurs de perles'', but the offer is overwhelming.

4 out of 5 stars If You Only Buy One Caruso . . ........2001-01-03

let this be it! Wonderful, generous selection of his singles for Victor, most of them solos, but a few duets, quartets, quintets, and a sextet. The accompanying booklet makes a great deal of including his first and last recordings, but by far the most important here is Caruso's 1907 recording of Vesti la giubba, the first classical recording to sell over a million copies in the United States. If you listen to it, you'll know why--it's every bit as melodramatic as the minstrel show singles with which it shared the top of the early twentieth-century charts.

      Product Description

Hugh Le Caine, early electronic music pioneer, demonstrates his Electronic Sackbut in 1948 by playing the opening clarinet solo from Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue'. Working at his Toronto laboratory, supported by the Canadian National Research Council, he went on to engineer and prototype the touch sensitive organ, variable speed recorder, multi-track recorder, and numerous other magnificent electronic instruments. And he demonstrated his inventions by composing his own music and by arranging well known tunes, demonstrating at the same time that he was a talented musician and that he had a great sense of humor. This CD, produced by Gayle Young, Le Caine's biographer, is a comprehensive compilation of his music, much of it not available before. The CD also includes many of Le Caine's spoken explanations of his demonstrations which make the CD come alive with human interest. In its commemoration of a remarkable personality and in the historical importance of its content, this is an essential CD. In the extent to which it is also enjoyable, it is a stunning accomplishment.

For any student of electronic music, this cd is a must. The cd works on so many levels: as an historical archive, a textbook of tape and control voltage manipulation, and as an interesting listening experience. You really feel as if you are connecting with the man himself. interesting note: he died shortly before John Chowning introduced FM synthesis to the world. Coincidence?

"Musically, From takes a very similar approach to Invocation with his extremely aggressive brand of technical death metal. Only on Arcane Path he seems to take it up another notch. The music is even more lethally heavy, faster and more extreme. With blasting galore, grinding and brutal guitars and just plain sickening growled vocals, Sympathy continues to rage upon even the most expecting of listeners. If you were a fan of Sympathy's last album, it's absolutely certain that you will fall in love with this album. Sympathy continues to forge the path that was originally taken and have set themselves up as one of the most extreme bands out there." -The Whipping Post TRACK LISTING: Introduction Adept Arcana The Shining Ones Lord Of All Terrors In Mine Own Image Bearing The Plague Adorned In Apostasy Love Me And Despair The Red League Twilight And Rebirth Surrounded By The Dead Realm Of Disease (Bonus Track)

Sympathy's Arcane path is a successful combination of brutality, technical prowess, melody, sharp, crisp production. Definitely a step up from the debut album Invocation. Great songwriting for a death metal band, really good lyrics(my favorite one is Lord of Terrors). Just killer, no filler!!!!

          2 out of 5 stars "High Art?".......2001-07-04

Here it is... one of the only Realworld Records releases that I can genuinely and enthusiastically say I did NOT enjoy upon first hearing it. There are a couple of great songs here -- "Morecambe Bay," "Chinese Canon," and, to a lesser extent, "My Mother Is Not the White Dove." The remaining tracks are nothing more than stuffy, pretentious noodling masquerading as artistic exploration. I can understand the desire to honor the deceased with "Cage Dead," but the end result comes off sounding downright corny. Meanwhile, "Ginger" sloughs on for what seems like hours without ever really making a musical statement. No offense to the customers here who obviously enjoyed the album, but I just didn't "get it."

5 out of 5 stars Unique. Amazing. Beautiful. My #1 Deserted Island Disc........2000-06-28

This is a gorgeous album that completely defies categorization. Throughout the album, one can hear elements of jazz, classical, trance, pop, and world music (from all continents). Despite this eclectic blend, everything holds together for an album that can be enjoyed start to finish.

I have yet to meet anybody who doesn't like this album. As a matter of fact, I have yet to play it for anybody who hasn't purchased it for themselves shortly thereafter.

While I like every single track (rare for me), standout tracks are, IMHO, My Mother is Not the White Dove, Youth and Age, and Morecambe Bay.

          5 out of 5 stars Extremely beautiful!.......2000-03-16

This is one of the most beautiful records I know, and I have quite a few. Here a various musicians playing very different styles, coming together at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios to record a calm and focussed album where all songs - however different they are - have a unique atmosphere. This is World Music at its very best - too bad there was no follow-up to this wonderful album.

5 out of 5 stars Another spectacular product of Real World fusion.......1999-01-31

9 tracks may not seem like a lot of music for a CD in this day and age; particularly when those cuts have titles like "Ginger","Chinese Canon", and "Cage Dead (Word Version)." But, like all of the Real World recordings, this album is a radiant example of the music that happens when individual talents collide and fuse together.

Recorded during the famous "Real World Recording Week," which brings together diverse artists to see, quite simply, what will happen, this album is jazzy and meditative in its overall feel. Tracks like "Chinese Canon", "Ginger", and "Morecambe Bay" will be precious gems to someone looking for a balm to the hectic everyday life. For those who find solace through more energized tracks, "Yodel 3" and "Youth and Age" provide a welcome boost of energy.

For those looking for a "world music" collection of excellent quality and wide variety of styles, this album is a must.
