The French have had a love affair with Miles Davis going back to his score for the 1957 film Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud. But French native and popular trumpeter-composer Eric Truffaz takes admiration to new levels on his U.S. debut, a compilation of tracks from his Blue Note France albums Out of a Dream, The Dawn, and Bending New Corners. Using familiar components of Miles's hotly debated 1970s sound (Agharta, Big Fun, On the Corner)--including muted trumpet, graceful figures, cerebral melodies, and atmospheric electric piano--Truffaz appears as a talented clone. But his music is redeemed by its very assimilation of Miles's style and elegance. Truffaz and his expressive quintet write evocative compositions rife with darkly gorgeous melodies, performed in a variety of contemporary styles. Quasi drum and bass fills "Bending New Corners" and "Betty"; whisper-funk imbues "The Dawn"; a springy groove straight from Sorcerer supports the elastic "Arroyo"; free-form noodling fills "Less"; and drum and bass noodling fills "More." Truffaz plays sumptuously on the eerie ballads "Wet in Paris" and "And." Many American acts sound flat and stiff when attempting this Milesian hipster style, but Truffaz and Co. pull it off with deft twirls. --Ken Micallef

I have loved this album since the days of vinyl, back when I was in High School. That said, it is the only album I have ever owned which evinces groans and sounds of vitriolic hate from unsuspecting listeners. I imagine that its the same response Coltrane got from the lady who screamed "ENOUGH!!!" in agony while Coltrane was soloing at the Village Vanguard.

MORAL OF THE STORY: One person's beautiful music is another's wretched noise.

This CD was produced by Frank Zappa which must had led to an invite for CBH to play on Zappa's excellent live in Austin-Zappa/Beefheart/Mothers,Bongo Fury album. Trout Mask Replica consists of a ton of tracks; some short-some lengthy. I get the feeling that this CD needs to grow on you. Weird for sure, but the man and the band are artistic. No where near main stream, and not meant for the casual listener. If you dig freaky numbers from the late 60's, early 70's then put this in your music library.

In terms of tone and cultural significance it is the aural equivalent of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. I listened to it in front of the Antiques Roadshow with the sound off, a bag of lemon bon bons and a shonky spiff and here's something I don't mind telling you music lover ... it were a proper treat ... "When Big Joan comes out her arms are too small, her head like a ball, she tied off her horse and galloped off into the moonbeams, she pulled up her blouse and compared her navel to the moon ..." I don't know who she is but my geography teacher was called Joan so I like to think it's about her.

I've been a huge fan of Dylan, Tom Waits, Bruce Cockburn and many other 'offbeat' artists for years. I hear that this was a great album, one of the first to break the genre of industrial experimentation and that it was a must listen; rated highly by Rolling Stone. All I can say is I must be turning into my dad, because 95 percent of it just sounded like random noise with little rythm and NO rhyme for the lyrics to eventually lead back to. I got most of the way through it in the first sitting. Several days later I tried to give it another chance but frankly it was just too annoying to overcome.

I cant think of any other way to describe Trout Mask Replica, than saying that it is anarchy in a record sleeve. The most bizzare, obsure, dark, raw, and trippy album ever devised. The music swerves back and forth through time signatures as if they were nothing at all. All the instruments sound untuned and the bassist is playing something comepletly different than the rest of the band. Over top of all this, Captain Beefheart rambles on over the microphone in a low and gritty Howlin Wolf style register. Its hard to belive that the great Captain Beefheart had previously composed all the parts to this symphony of chaos. One of the best songs on the album is got to be Moonlight on Vermont. This song opens up with one of the greatest drumlines in history. It sounds as if the snare is sprimg activated. The lyrics are beautiful surreal poetry. Zoot horn Rollo plays the slide as if he were a recovering morphine addict. If your musical taste are tepid, and you cant tolerate captain Beefheart, than this is not for you. The album is a classic piece of Dada art. WARNING: Its not easy listening!

    Usually when you read that an album is "inspired by" a motion picture or TV show, you can be certain that the one thing those artists were inspired by was a big fat check, and consequently those records generally do not sound very good. But the debut collaboration between no-longer-underground hip-hop artists Dangermouse and MF Doom, allegedly inspired by the Cartoon Network's late-night stoner-centric animation series Adult Swim, is far better than it has any right being. Doom has one of the best flows around, and he's at least as smart as your favorite dictionary-digger. Danger Mouse's obscure samples are excellent, but this is just a fun record that's not trying to be more, or less. Character voices get worked in, and these are pretty cool, especially Shakey's send-up of the fake answering machine cliché. There're also guest appearances by Ghostface Killah, Cee-Lo, and Talib Kweli. When it comes to rappers hanging with cartoon characters, Mouse and the Mask is more fun than a Shaq attack and a Gorillaz record combined. --Mike McGonigal

      Don't expect to find the aural sequel to James Horner's epic score to Titanic on The Mask of Zorro. On Zorro, Horner flavors his orchestrations with flamenco, lets some instruments have their solo turns, and goes for a distinct Latin flavoring on most tracks. In the theater it's a rare treat--the composer bridges the gap between the Zorro of long ago and the prerequisite sweeping orchestrations of today's cinema. A variety of influences--everything from his work on Willow to the frenzied stomping of Michael Flatley--seemingly creep into the work. Unfortunately, the vocals of Marc Anthony and Tina Arena on "I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You" (Zorro's equivalent to "My Heart Will Go On") stick out like a sore Anglo thumb amid the rest of this fine score. --Jason Verlinde

        McKennitt's travels through Spain and Morocco flavor this album with a distinctly Mediterranean tinge, from the opening "The Mystic's Dream," with its dancing percussion arrangements, to "Marrakesh Night Market," to "Full Circle" and the instrumental "Santiago." "Marrakesh Night Market" is an especially strong performance, with an interesting musical texture; the balalaika, udu drum, and dumbek are played alongside a synthesizer. As usual, McKennitt has set a poem to music, this time Yeats's "The Two Trees," with a lovely introduction on the Uillean pipes. There's also "The Bonny Swans," a traditional lyric, and the CD closes with Shakespeare, as McKennitt sets some of Prospero's words from The Tempest to her own music. Excerpts from McKennitt's journals, included in the CD booklet, make for interesting reading as they shed some light on her source material and inspiration for writing each song. --Genevieve Williams

        Loreena McKennitt drew her inspiration for this album from 15th century Spain, where the cultures of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam coexisted uneasily, tied together by a common tradition of religious mysticism. McKennitt reflects the multi-culturalism in arrangements that mix the half-tone intervals and familiar instruments of the Aryan north with the quarter-tone intervals and dumbeg, oud, and tamboura of the Semitic south. The results are often intoxicating, even if the composer consistently prefers slow-moving tempos. There's a tension and density to this music that safely removes it from the new- age category. McKennitt's attempts to evoke medieval mysticism in her lyrics are less successful. She fares best when she draws her texts from other sources: Prospero's closing speech from Shakespeare's "The Tempest," Yeats's "The Two Trees," "The Dark Night of the Soul" by the medieval Spanish mystic St. John of the Cross, and the traditional narrative ballad, "The Bonny Swans." One these numbers, the shadowy, mesmerizing atmospheres conjured up by McKennitt's music are enhanced by the words rather than spoiled by them. --Geoffrey Himes
