Amazon.com essential recording

Part of the '90s Seattle grunge triumvirate completed by Nirvana and Soundgarden, Pearl Jam debuted with Ten, their most accessible, least self-conscious album. Over time, PJ's rep as a politically correct band just a little too above it all to prostitute its music on MTV has nearly superseded the music. But before that, they were a simply an in-your-face, in-your-head, loud, melodic rock band. And lead singer Eddie Vedder was known for his possessed stage presence and a primal growl that sounded like it required three vocal chords. The personal, narrative singles "Alive," "Jeremy," and "Even Flow" catapulted the reluctant band into the 10-million-plus-sales division. Subsequent albums are more intricate, subtle, thematically complex, and, in many ways, better than Ten. But the band may never repeat the stampede caused by this debut. --Beth Bessmer

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Ten.......2007-06-29

There is a reason that this cd has been considered by many to one of the greatest debuts of all time. Every single song on this cd is absolutely perfect. I just can't get enough of this cd. The lyrics are unforgettable, i.e. "Try to erase this from the blackboard" from Jeremy, and "I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky" from Black, and Mike McCready delivers some of the best guitar solos of any grunge band of the day. And no one but Eddie Vetter could pull of such beautiful singing, and to me he might be one of the greatest vocalists of all time, along with Layne Staley and Chris Cornell. So if you're only going to buy one Pearl Jam cd (you're crazy) make it this one. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A Pure 100% Masterpiece.......2007-06-13

Ten, the first Pearl Jam album, has always been a great record ever since it came out. Very highly rated, and it truly deserves it. Even though I dont regard this album as Pearl Jams best, by no means so, it has aged very well and still sounds amazing. The album is just pure raw energy put into music form. Its hard to believe how much emotion/energy is put into these songs. If you listen to the lyrics in every song you can feel Eddie Vedders pain as he grew up. All the lyrics are awesome resulting in very good songwriting. That songwriting is amongst the best the band has ever done. Mike Mccready is one of my favorite guitarists as well. His work on the album is one of his best for sure. The solos and all are just mindblowing. Not because they are complex or hard to play, but because they all are played with feel, not complexity. The whole album just feels like one big rush of angry emotion. This is a masterpiece and always will be.

5 out of 5 stars A truly legendary album that stands the test of time.......2007-04-07

I remember when this album was first released - I was 12 years old, and just really starting to get heavily into music. My real captivation with grunge started with Nirvana - I saw the music video for "Smells Like Teen Spirit," and was just captivated - it was a far cry from the music that had been extremely popular in the late eighties (songs like "She Drives Me Crazy" by Fine Young Cannibals, for example). Then, here comes Pearl Jam, with a very different sound than Nirvana (more influenced by classic rock than punk), but an equally invigorating and new one. This album was just HUGE in its time, and the main hits ("Even Flow," "Alive," and "Jeremy") were played EVERYWHERE. Even if you were a fan of Pearl Jam, it was pretty hard not to get tired of them as this album continued to sell in massive quantities all through the nineties.

In retrospect, it was truly an important album that helped shape an entire decade of music, and ushered in a truly legendary (albeit brief) era. Grunge. All of a sudden, sounding original and being musically talented were in style, and "Ten" is one of the key albums that paved the way for nearly all of the now legendary bands of the 90's (such as Radiohead and The Smashing Pumpkins).

And, musically, it truly holds up over time, because Pearl Jam are a band that are truly talented. The time in which "Ten" was released may have helped catapult them to the top of the charts, but their artistry is what has kept them there throughout their career. Listening to "Ten" now is actually more enjoyable for me than it was, say, ten years ago when I'd heard it so many times I knew every word.

Recommended strongly to any fan of rock music.

5 out of 5 stars This album has all of my Pearl Jam favorites on it........2007-04-03

Other albums have good songs, but unlike the other albums that they released, this one doesnt have mostly crappy songs.

1 out of 5 stars Really quite scary.......2007-03-25

I came across the amount of 5 star reviews this album has by accident, and it reminded me of the past. I've heard this album twice - the day it came out and the day afterwards. I was working in an independent record store at the time - kind of High Fidelity like - and after unpacking that day's shipment we put 'Ten' on the record player. Then, the next day, we played it again - just to check it really WAS as bad as we remembered. It was more so. Don't believe the hype.

5 out of 5 stars Respekt.......2007-04-11

Evidently meaning business this album is a serious play for critical acceptance and a shift of intent for the band after their debut. Skid Row was hair meta, albeit excellent hair metal. But Slave to the Grind is just excellent metal and very much in keeping with the bands stated heroes like Judas Priest. Almost every tack here is a winner, the rockers atacking with bite and the ballads "taking you to dark unsettling places where reflection collides with worry" to quote Martin Popoff.

rather than go through a track by track synopsis for this release I'll cherry pick a few tracks and discuss them.

Monkey business - Excellent metal, excellent. From a brooding intro to a blazing metalfest led by a visceral Bach this is top notch metal no matter what era you grew up in.

Slave to the Grind - Probably the heaviest musical track recorded by Skid Row. Not my cup of tea but certainly a heavy duty attack. Add silly grunt/gargled vocals and you've got a metalcore song!

Quicksand Jesus - One of the three disturbing ballads on display here. Playing this track followed by In A Darkened Room and Wasted Time in an unlit room is something only to be done by experts. Just make sure you don't have any sharp objects close to hand...

Get the **** Out - The only really whimsical track here and a welcome relief. The only track here that could easily be imagined slotting onto the debut. Which makes sense as it was first played live at the Hordern Pavilion, Sydney Australia on the bands tour to promote the debut, so was perhaps the first tune written for this album.

Mudkicker - After Monkey Business this is probably my favourite of the metallic tunes, psychologically driven along a regular theme with the passion of the bands attack.

This album is a classin and the fact that it's not regarded as such appears to be due to the way the band are preceived in hindsight due to their breakup/disintegration. And perhaps because of hte bands image prior to this release. But if your not sure about buying a disc by Skid Row then ditch your worries and pick this up now.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Album Ever.......2006-10-05

This is quite simply my favorite album of all time.
Bachs voice is extraordinary and he really unleashes his full fury on this album. This ain't "hair-metal", its heavy metal, and if you love heavy metal, then you'll love this album.

4 out of 5 stars Rocks with controlled abandon.......2006-06-29

'Bass as he is known now because of the Super Group TV show on VH 1,is a rock legend, and rightfully so. He has pipes and knows how to use them. This is a classic 80's rock fest with all the power and verve to make you grit your teeth. Production could use a little tweaking, like a lot of the 80's CD's. A little bright, not enough mids. There is a reason that Skid Row still sells. This is good, crafted, and well sung rock. More original sounding than Poison or Warrant. More melodic than Anthrax or Motorhead. Great to play over and over, which I think is what the hair bands gave us. Don't think, just rock. Check out the underated Blue Murder CD made by John Sykes who was the guitarist and side singer for Whitesnake. If you like the 'Row, you will love Blue Murder. Great vocals too!

5 out of 5 stars If this doesn't get you moving, check your pulse..........2006-05-14

Guns n' Roses and Skid Row were by far and away my two favorite bands during the late 80s/early 90s. In truth, Skid was a distant second, but second nontheless. They toured together in the summer of 1992 and I got the chance to see them when they came to my hometown. Wow! What a show. I had their first one and was expecting more "18 and life", and "I remember you" type stuff. "In a Darkened Room", "Quicksand Jesus", and "Wasted Time" are in that same mold. But, the rest of this disc is heavy metal at its absolute finest.

"Monkey Business", "Slave to the Grind", "Living on a Chain Gang", and "Mudkicker" are some of the heaviest and best songs ever recorded. Heavy doesn't always make it good. Hard rocking doesn't always make it heavy. But it all comes together - completely together - on Slave to the Grind. What these guys did on this disc is absolutely amazing. This is no doubt a timeless classic.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely NOT 'WASTED TIME'.......2006-04-27

This is the second Skids album and on tape it was a bit different, there's one song here that I had never heard before (Get The F*** Out). This album is tough, edgy, social and totally reflects the time it was written in (drugs, corporate greed, futility - all that fun stuff). I love most all the songs on this CD but I think my favorites are 1) Psycho Love - a whole lot of fun and strangeness; 2) Creepshow - girl kicks boy in the teeth, is she trying to tell him something?? and 3) Wasted Time - a best friend sinks into the deadliness of drugs while those that love him watch - devastating!

Solid second effort from the guys - can't miss it!

3 out of 5 stars the funk runs out of steam.......2007-05-11

this compilation loses its momentum at the half way point. but as it goes up the hill with songs like 'just a touch of love' and 'slide' it is a helluva ride!

4 out of 5 stars Truly the Best of Slave.......2007-04-26

I grew up listening to most of the songs on this album, and I know that Steve Arrington and the rest of Slave are chillin' sittin' on royalties due to them, especially by their songs being sampled by rappers. I was amazed at how Jay-Z and Jermaine Dupri used Slave's "Weak In the Knees" for the hit "Money Ain't A Thang". As good as the rap hit is, the original song (and every song on this CD) is da bomb. I strongly recommend this CD for the lovers of funk or just simple classy music.

5 out of 5 stars STELLAR FOREVER!.......2007-04-21

I have this greatest hits collection, and it's great. I also have one of Steve Arrington's solo L.P.'s - I think it came out sometime around 1986-1988 - can't find it anywhere on c.d. - Slave was one of the best funk groups of the late 70's and 80's alongside, Cameo and maybe Lakeside.

5 out of 5 stars Good introduction to one of the best fungk bands ever!!.......2006-12-03

While Slave has had MANY songs that are not featured on here, particularly most of their hidden-gem album cuts, this is all the casual or curious listener needs to sample a taste of some of Slave's funk brilliance, as well as Steve Arrington's classic solo releases. Slave represents the best of the funk that came out of the midwest in the 1970s, with their infectious bass lines, gorgeous melodies, and long-lasting influence on R&B/Hip Hop artists of today. Check this one out.

3 out of 5 stars Did Not give SLAVE enough Justice.......2006-09-08

This was exciting for me when I first came across this CD. My turntable was broke and I did not go looking for another. This CD started the "get all your albums on cd" phase. I love to have all of my favorite SLAVE cuts on CD- The sad part is that Steve Arrington's Hall of Fame is on a SLAVE CD--The person who had this idea--STUPID! I say this to your shame! The cuts that should have been in their place should be "Thank You" from the Just A Touch of Love album and what about the ever-funky "Baby Sinister" from Hardness Of The World? We should be jammin' to "Drac is Back" or "Comming Soon" or since we gotta have Steve arrington, how about "For The Love Of You" from Showtime. If you are going to add the people who left SLAVE then Steve Washington's group AURRA should have been on here. At least you would have most of the original SLAVE gang on this CD. Although many good SLAVE songs were omitted, it is still a good CD. For a true SLAVE fan, KEEP IT SLAVE, NO ADDITIVES OR PRESERVATIVES!!

If there's one thing film producers and record executives like more than Success, it's Success: Part 2. Thus when Ridley Scott's high-tech sword 'n' sandal epic scored both Golden Globe wins and Academy Award nods for Best Film and Best Score, it was a sure bet that another volume of Hans Zimmer's and Lisa Gerrard's music for the film couldn't be far behind. Though not exactly leftovers, the tracks here sometimes point to the fact that there wasn't enough fresh material to fill this volume out, hence we get some remixed cues, a handful of familiar music with dramatic dialog excerpts edited and superimposed (or misplaced, with decidedly mixed results), and even a beat-heavy, dance-club mix of "Now We Are Free." With a little over half an hour of entirely fresh material and some souvenir dialog snippets over the rest, there's enough here to please Gladiator die-hards. Also of note: guitarist Heitor Pereira's flamenco-flavored flourishes are better showcased throughout; and "The Gladiator Waltz" serves up one of Zimmer's original synth demos (with a dash of Russell Crowe dialog up front)--a dramatic amp-up of Holst's "Mars, the Bringer of War" that's a prime example of the composer's state-of-the-art digital orchestral conjuring. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Essential.......2006-12-30

One of those pivotal soundtracks. Unfortunately, there is dialogue over a few of the tracks, but it is well worth sitting or fast-forwarding through. There is a duduk (the sound used for that thing Mr. Tumnus plays in 'Narnia'), and I have fallen in love with it. There is the use of a female voice (Lisa Gerrard) wailing in another language, which had become something of a trend ('Troy', 'Munich', 'Narnia' again, and many others). "Now We Are Free" is the kind of song that first intrigues you, then entraps you, and then takes you on an emotional ride. The soundtrack is intensely bittersweet, exciting ("The Gladiator Waltz"--yes, you're supposed to giggle--Hans did!), and just very consumable. If you were impressed by movie--and I haven't run into anybody yet who wasn't--then consider this soundtrack an equivalent of that experience, but audio.

5 out of 5 stars HANS ZIMMER IS THE GREATEST PRESENT DAY COMPOSER!!!.......2005-10-23

I HAVE TO SAY HANS ZIMMER IS THE GREATEST OF HIS ERA. I HAVE PURCHASED ALMOST ALL OF HIS MAJOR SCORES FROM RAIN MAN, CRIMSON TIDE, GLADIATOR, AND EVEN THE LATEST BATMAN AND I KNOW I HAVE PLENTY OF MORE THAT COULD BE LISTED. I FIRST WAS WEIRY ABOUT BUYING THE SECOND SCORE TO GLADIATOR THINKING IT WOULD BE JUST LIKE THE FIRST ONE. IT IS AWESOME AND JUST AS GOOD OR BETTER, IF YOU ARE A TRUE ZIMMER FAN YOU HAVE TO ADD THIS TO YOUR COLLECTION. I HOPE HE KEEPS MAKING MUSIC FOR YEARS TO COME.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Extention!.......2005-10-22

Gladiator may be the best middle eastern score ever written. The Duduk was incredible!

The first CD was amazing as well, however, I believe this disc to have a few advantages.

First of all, "The Gladiator Waltz." This song TOTALLY improves upon "The Battle" from disc 1. The original stopped way before the new track. The synth sounds are very good, and don't take away from the beauty at all!

Another highlight is "Homecoming" this is a sad, angry song that will have your blood pumping. If you've seen the movie, you remember the scene where Maximus escapes execution, and rides home like a mad man, only to find his wife and son Crucified. A truly angry and intense song.

"Secrets" is a sneaky evil track, portraying the violent insanity of Commodus.

I have mentioned the highlights, but all the rest are great too! A must have CD, even if you own the first!

4 out of 5 stars beautiful music.......2005-07-28

This is just what the title says: more great(beautiful) music from the motion picture, including some "spiced-up" remixes. This album also features sound clips from the movie. Listening to it will make you think you're in Rome again.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing companion to the Oscar nominated score........2005-05-28

The original score for Gladiator was a grand triumph for composer Hans Zimmer. Unfortunatly, this cd follows a trend during the latter half of the 1990's. When you have a successful score cd, follow it up with a cd full of dialogue, demo tracks and occassional new music. That is what this cd is full off. I expected more of the great music from the movie, instead I was disappointed bitterly.

5 out of 5 stars Tchaikovsky is at his finest .......2007-02-10

Canons resound at the climax of the story which is started by a choral. It is easy to imagine being one of Napoleon's troops advancing toward Moscow with canon balls taking out comrades on our right and left. The courage of the Russian defenders can be felt.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful but clearly far from the best.......2007-02-10

This is certainly a wonderful and worthy of being in ones collection but it simply does not stand the test to those by Ormandy and Philly, Bernstein both with the New York Phil & Israel Phil, or Chicago Symphony with either Reiner or Solti or any other conductor conducting Chicago.

5 out of 5 stars 1812 Overture/Marche Slave.......2005-08-04

This was very much worth the price. I have listened to it many times, but never tire of it. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Collection of Russian Composers.......2004-12-29

This CD is truly one of the bettar CD's containing not only Tchaikovsky, but also Borodin and Rimsky-Kosakov. The most powerful peice is hard to choose, but the quick paced, Marche Slave Op.31 is sure to draw your attention. But how could we forget the classic 1812 overture with its famous cannon barrage, and the many other terrific pieces, pointing out specifically the Capriccio espagnol op. 34. I strongly suggest this CD, as with all Deutsche Grammophon(as they are superbly recorded), I am sure any lover of the great Russian Composer's will enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Incomparable.......2004-10-26

a worth recommendation to their collection.
The CD contains the beautifull title "Slave to Love"

4 out of 5 stars Bryan Ferry gets the package treatment........2004-06-28

Without question, Bryan Ferry is one of the most sublime singers of the past 30 years. And if you subtract the work with Roxy, he rates as one of the all time best interpretive artists, ever. Which is what makes a collection like "Slave to Love" frustrating. While it certainly spotlight's Ferry's extraordinary skill as a romantic singer, it jumbles and juxtaposes styles from the various stages of Ferry's career.

One of the greatest things about latter day Roxy was that the albums (in particular, "Flesh + Blood" and "Avalon") had such seamless flow to them. Even his more recent solo material had that silky continuity, making them best heard as whole albums. On a CD touted as "The Best Of The Ballads," having the wistful romance of "More Than This" pressed against the endearingly campy "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" becomes something of a distraction rather than an enhancement.

Them's the minuses. The plusses are that you do get a really slick 74 minutes of coolly delivered songs to while away the time to. There are a few harder to find single and soundtrack songs here as well. Roxy Music's tribute to John Lennon, their cover of "Jealous Guy," is reason alone to buy "Slave To Love." You'll also find "Is Your Love Strong Enough" and "Sonnet No 18" for those who don't have the originals.

So while I wouldn't disavow this collection to anyone searching it out, I'd also recommend "Avalon," "Boys and Girls" and "Siren" as albums to explore above this one.

5 out of 5 stars Bryan Ferry: Today's Sinatra.......2003-02-16

I'll be brief. Your time is better spent lsiteing to this CD than reading about it. Bryan Ferry is today's Sinatra. Timeless ballads and exquisite arrangements, sincere vocal featuring superb phrasing. This is what artist collections should be, something fans and first-time listeners will enjoy forever.

5 out of 5 stars This is one collection to love.......2002-03-24

Bryan is one of my all time favorite singers of all time. He is a great musician and has created some of the best music that I have ever listened to.

This CD is a collection of ballads from both his solo albums and from his band Roxy Music's albums. There are two songs that were previously unreleased as well as the Princess Diana tribute track Sonnet No. 18.

The songs vary from very simple in the likes of Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, to jazzy like that of These Foolish Things, to rock-oriented in the likes of Is Your Love Strong Enough which is one of the best songs Bryan Ferry has ever made. It could fit well on his masterpiece Bete Noire. There are even two songs from his 1999 album As Time Goes By(I have since come to like it some) which have a very 30s or 40s vibe to them.

My favorite songs are Avalon, Is Your Love Strong Enough, Zamba, These Foolish Things, Windswept and the unforgettable Slave To Love.

The truth is this entire CD contains unforgettable songs that will never die in my opinion. I have enjoyed Bryan Ferry's music for about seven years( I,m 19 years old but I hate alot of todays artists). Bete Noire made me a fan of Bryan.

The thing though I kind don't like about these so called "Best Of" CDs is it kind of feels like the record executives are trying to cash in on the Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music fanbases( I don't need "Avalon, Slave To Love, or Smoke Gets In Your Eyes on like ten or so CDs).

But anyway I love this CD and i now have about five CDs by Ferry. I plan on getting his remastered early albums sometime soon.

Personally I feel glad I have this great collection of great ballads from a great singer. I recommend buying it for casual fans. This album is worth having just for Is Your Love Strong Enough with it's haunting ambient intro and the ambient rock guitar aways and for the great cover version of the classic Crazy Love.

5 out of 5 stars Ballet .......2007-07-01

I was away for a long time. I feel very better now. I love this music and I am grateful to it.

5 out of 5 stars Masterful recording of masterful compositions.......2007-01-19

This recording has become rare to find (in Europe), which surprises me, for I find both the compositions and the performance excellent. Especially the Sylphides, which are orchestral arrangements of some of Chopin's finest piano pieces - are heavenly. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Ballet bon bons German style.......2004-06-26

Herbert von Karajan was the most recorded conductor in history. For that reason, he made a lot of records (that turned into CDs) like this one -- collections of well-known music that the public wants to hear over and over again. This group of ballet music is good, done in Karajan's typical highly chiseled style with a minimum of sentimentality. I once read a critic who called the style Karajan and Szell popularized the "school of industrial perfection", meaning every note in its place every time. That's true here, too. My favorite among these bon bons is the Tchaikovsky music from "Sleeping Beauty". Karajan is still hailed today for his later stereo version of the final Tchaikovsky troika of symphonies. Many critics put him up there with the best Tchaikovksy recordings ever. You can tell why critics were so persuaded by listening to his bleeding chuncks from "Sleeping Beauty". Not only does it contain the essential Berlin Philharmonic perfection and polish, it goes a little further than everything else on this set in terms of emotional attachment. The first two sections of the music, "Introduction. La Fee da Lilas" and "Adagio. Pas d'action" pack an enormous wallop. The final section is monumentally done by Karajan and the Berliners, surging forward in waves of sound and emotion until the listener is swept away during the crescendo in almost unconscious grandeur. I urge you to listen to this magnificent music-making and try not to develop goose flesh at the peak. This connection between perfection, music and emotion is what set Karajan apart from every other conductor in the 20th Century, and the reason he is as vivid and a larger than life figure today, 15 years after his death.

5 out of 5 stars First-Rate Ballet Music.......2003-11-14

This collection of "Famous Ballet Music" from DG's mid-priced "2CD" series is truly first-rate. A lot of the credit for that goes to the man in charge of this set, Herbert von Karajan. The great conductor leads the Berlin Philharmonic through glowing highlights and suites from Offenbach's "Gaite Parisienne," Gounod's "Faust," Tchaikovsky's "Sleeping Beauty" and Delibes' "Coppelia," and the complete Chopin's "Les Sylphides" and "Dance of the Hours" from Ponchielli's "La Gioconda." Of course, the pieces featured here are the types of orchestral nuggets that someone like Karajan and the Berliners could eat for breakfast while reading the paper. But Karajan really prided himself in being one of the stereo-age's best Tchaikovsky conductors, and he made several recordings of each of the three ballet suites in addition to his many Symphonic Cycles. Also, his early 1960s accounts of the Chopin and Delibes in particular (the remainder of the works were recorded in the early 1970s), are as good, if not better, than any performance I have heard. In all, this is a collection that will appeal to the casual fan and serious collector alike.

5 out of 5 stars A full-length Coppelia at an appealing price.......2003-06-26

Andrew Mogrelia has conducted a number of full-length ballets for Naxos: Giselle, Sylvia, Sleeping Beauty, and this Coppelia. I own all of them, because I find Mogrelia is one of those rare conductors who make a ballet sound like a ballet.
In concert hall versions, conductors often make ballet music impossibly fast, or simply too unpredictable. (Gergiev's Nutcracker is in this category: fun to listen to, definitely NOT a dancer's Nutcracker.) But when dancers are on stage, they need a regular, dependable beat to dance to. Mogrelia's Coppelia never sounds sing-song, because he uses dynamics so skillfully - but he does conduct at an authentic dance tempo.
Another Coppelia I like and own is Mark Ermler's (ASIN: B0000024CL), but while it's much more than highlights it is not the full ballet. The first act mazurka is missing, and that's a definite loss.
La Source is a bit of an oddity because it was originally commissioned as a sort of competition: half composed by Minkus, half by Delibes. Delibes was generally considered the winner, so he stayed in Paris while Minkus went off to Russia. This album is strictly Delibes, so it's only highlights from La Source. But it does include my favorite, the utterly charming Pas des Fleurs, Grande Valse.

5 out of 5 stars Inspired ballet music at a bargain price........2002-07-13

Although I'm not particularly fond of watching ballets I have a special love for ballet music, and Coppelia is one of my favorites. It is the masterpiece of Leo Delibes who was one of the greatest of ballet composers. Even Tchaikovsky -- probably the greatest ballet composer of all -- greatly admired Delibes' work. This recording presents not only the complete music for Coppelia but also the lovely, but seldom-heard, music Delibes wrote for La Source -- both conducted by the excellent ballet conductor Andrew Mogrelia. And at a bargain price to boot. Please don't pass up this special treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Performance.......2000-08-27

I search for the recording for the complete Coppelia when my daughter's dance school was practicing for it. I found this item. Performance was meticulous. It was recorded in the Orchestra's concert hall over a period of almost two weeks. All digital recording. Well balanced orchestra. Fine details. A good item to collect.

5 out of 5 stars Debussy with a difference!.......2007-03-10

Do not let the dismissive review below make you dismiss this amazing and breath taking complete set. Like his Scriabin recordings, Gordon Fergus-Thompson works wonder with the well known piece like Clair de Lune, Arabesque and Reverie, and breathes new life into the music by his keen sense of tonal colours and delicacy. When it comes to impressionist music, no pianists can match Richter, who played Clair de Lune, Pavane or miroirs like a miracle, but Fergus-Thompson creats his own unique soundscape.

He is one of very few pianists alive who pay careful attention to how a note produced on the instrument decays and merges with other notes, while most of pianist nowadays focus mostly on starting point of the sound. That's a secret of the richness of colours and expression in his pianism.

He is often criticised for lack of technical prowess, compared to past masters like Gieseking or Michelangeli, but I can not detect even a hint of technical weakness or instability in this set. This is simply a different and highly personal interpretation, and it is a shame to miss out this magical music making simply because it is different from the mainstream interpretation.

1 out of 5 stars One Star for Charity's Sake.......2007-03-01

Avoid this set!!! The man is a gifted pianist but has no understanding on how to interpret the music. This is the nadir of all the Debussy piano sets. With Walter Gieseking's superlative set available why would you want dog food when you can eat supreme cuisine!!!

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully interpreted.......2007-02-13

Gordon Fergus-Thompson does an amazing job of playing and interpreting Debussy's music. I have been playing piano for years--especially Debussy--and this CD really captures the essence of the music. I'd recommend this to anyone.

These recordings are some of the highest quality Debussy you'll find. There is a freedom that comes across in Fergus-Thompson's playing that you won't find in other so-called great recordings. Instead of trying to sound "Debussy-like", the music is played naturally while maintaining accuracy and original intent of the composer. Recording quality is up to date. Box set is 4 discs, with the body nicely separated into larger works with dates included.

4 out of 5 stars Slave to the Rhythm..........2007-01-04

I can't improve on what the others have said about this effort by Miss Jones. But...an FYI...On the "Private-Life-Compass-Point-Sessions" CD, you will find the extended version of "Slave to the Rhythm."

Slave to the Rhythm times:

1. Slave to the Rhythm : 6:35
2. Compass-Point-Sessions: 8:10 (Hot Blooded Mix)

Don't worry folks, the "Hot Blooded Mix" is better than the album version (which is still a great song at 6:35, by the way!) Again, just putting it "out there" for your information! Four stars!

4 out of 5 stars A worthy attempt but not her best........2006-11-20

The album is an interesting attempt. It's appropriate for Grace Jones' style (unlike Inside Story) but there's not too much solid material here. Slave to the Rythym and the artwork makes this album 3 stars by default. I must give it 4 stars for it's effort but I would not recommended it for most people, unless you're a big Jones fan.

5 out of 5 stars Trevor Horn And Grace-An Explosive Combination.......2006-07-01

Sometimes an artist/producer relationship is meant to be.So after Sly And Robbie Grace Jones went for none other then Trevor Horn-80's sound painter extrondinaire. The results?Well
'Slave To The Rhythm' is unlike anything Grace Jones had done before. Many of the songs are an involved, dancable song cycle.Musically it all works but as it's function this CD is Grace Jones' biography set to music. The songs are constructed into and around an interview with Grace Jones about her life and career experiences-one of the the most compelling tracks here is "The Frog And The Princess".As pure music "Ladies & Gentleman-Miss Grace Jones" and the title track are superb.Just for a soni sound attack "Operattack" fits the bill with harsh echos of distored vocals and sound clippings.Although it contains some recognizable pop music such as the title song and "Fasion Show" this functions more as a whole-a biographical sound collage with a strong pop music underpinning. It is part of what Trevor Horn did so well and it is fit perfectly to Grace Jones' persona and musical sense. The perfect musical/audio visualization of an artist and their sense of self expression.

5 out of 5 stars America lost a perfect gem.......2005-12-29

How can you NOT check out this CD? This is one of the best works that Grace presented. I'm surprised that when this was first release I was preadolescent. I guess America wasn't ready for state of the art creation. Sometimes America can be so stubborn at times. If you are looking for a creative journey into Grace's artistic mind you should check this CD out!

5 out of 5 stars Agree this work under-appreciated.......2005-10-20

Traditionally not a Grace Jones fan. However, the creativity, versatility, and inovation of this work is not typical. I agree with those comments that this work really did not receive the recognition it deserved and remains an under-appreciated masterpiece. In this sense it reminds me of Phil Collins' work ('Face Values' in particualr) before Collins became a household name (recognizing the great dissimilarities in style, presentation, and audience).
