Product Description
Sad is the fourth Nels Cline Trio album, and perhaps the most diverse yet. The disc begins with a three-minute-long guitar drone, followed by a drum solo, then a quiet improv, and a blistering coda. And that's just the first track. "Fluff w/ Fork" and "Little Shaver" are the noisiest the Trio have ever been, while "Texas Telephone Pal" and "Thought Cloud" are perhaps the most abstract. Sad also features two of Nels' best and most fully realized compositions yet, "Arrows" and "Crest in Black".

Absolutely Amazing.......2007-07-01
I had never heard of this band until yesterday.
I was just looking around the web and happened upon a website that had one of their songs on it "How It Ends". I only got to hear about 4 seconds of the song, but it was enough to make the hair raise on the back of my neck and send electric chills that I haven't had from music in a long long time.
It made me go out and get all of their stuff and so far, I love it all. I haven't heard anything this amazing since The Magnetic Fields.
His voice is abosulutely amazing and soul piercing.
Sexy, sultry.......2007-05-10
I have had this album for about a month, playing on repeat. This is best album I have heard in years. Their music is best described as--sexy.
Amazing! a must-have! .......2007-04-23
This band denies the idea that a band can be held back by a lesser known genre of music. To begining to end, this album challenges the listener to change his/her view of music for the better....and yeah, "How it ends" is, in my opinion, probaly one of the best songs of 2006! Buy it or be square!
So lovely..........2007-03-18
I bought this CD on a whim, as it was recommended by a reviewer when I purchased the soundtrack to Everything is Illuminated. It's great. If you like your music with a bit of melancholy, this is for you. Love it.
Wonder-Full.......2007-01-11
One source describes DeVotchKa as "a four piece multi-instrumental and vocal ensemble that fuses Romani, Greek, Slavic, Bolero, and Mariachi music with American punk and folk roots." Personally, I can only describe their music as among the BEST I have ever heard. It is brooding at times, uplifting at others, always thoughtful, narratively lyrical (each song tells a sort of short story), and solidly melodic without ever being mawkish, phony, or fruity. Just good music.

Through a wash of shimmering, overdriven guitars and thunderous drums, a thickly accented Glaswegian voice rises and falls across a soundscape of sweeping expanse. And so goes the Twilight Sad's full-length debut, Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters, nine songs of ambitious scope and widescreen proportions. Each track is a mini-epic right down to its ornate title, like the blazing, blaring "Talking with Fireworks / Here, It Never Snowed," and "That Summer, At Home I Had Become The Invisible Boy," an evocative and affecting account of adolescent romantic bewilderment. The band's nearly overwhelming wall of sound means there's no shortage of aural stimulus to fill up the listener's ears, but penetrate the surface of this circuitous and clamorous record, and you'll find the Twilight Sad are concealing bewitching songs underneath all that noise. --Ben Heege
Customer Reviews:
One of 2007's top albums.......2007-06-22
I can't stop listening to this album. Singer James Graham's thick brogue is startling at first, then heartily endearing- much like much of the album's material. The thick layers of noise, overdriven guitar, and accordion pull you into a wash of atmosphere and emotion, where the epic scope of the songs buried underneath tear through to your very core. Anyone who knocks this album for Graham's accent either simply didn't give him a chance or has no taste in music.
Think I'm in love..........2007-06-14
If you like The Walkmen and Interpol, you'll love these guys. I am in new band love right now. Plus they have awesome accents that will melt your heart, or maybe I'm just too American...
one of the best debuts of 2007 yet to date.......2007-06-08
Along with The Field and Battles, The Twilight Sad makes 2007 a good start off for new sounds. This album may sound like an ordinary "indie" rock album, but the way the guitars are performed is very atmospheric that it even resembled Sigur Ros (Don't worry I'm not comparing them or anything, just saying their guitars are thick layered). In general, this album contains both power and softness, and the band members really know how to perform as an ensemble.
and stop bitching about the vocalist's Scottish accent.
Not much of a connection.......2007-06-05
It's not the vocals, or the lack of melody that mothered me. It was lack of connection.
Great find.......2007-06-02
First off... You can't knock a band because the singer has a Scottish accent. The band is Scottish! Personally, I quite enjoy the accent and think it adds a lot to the sound. So for anyone open minded enough to get over that, "Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters" is a beautiful album. I first heard it yesterday, and have listened several more times since then.
It's simple. If you like good music, you'll like this.

Album Description
For a band that's been compared to Joy Division, Leonard Cohen, Wilco, and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, the National sure sounds a lot more like the Czars or Uncle Tupelo on this sophomore album Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers. The band focuses on slow atmospheric songs, it's when it kicks out the jams that the music is the most compelling.. With so many influences rearing their heads and ample musical chops in the bag, the National might not be masters of any one genre, but it creates a fine amalgam nonetheless. Brassland. 2003.
Customer Reviews:
one of my Top 3.......2007-05-03
The first song is low...talks about personal weakness and how to hide your feelings from another. Mentions strangers ("you're just another one of them"), death and unknown men.
The second is completely different, in tone, in tempo. Full of energy & screams. Talks about being lonely ("she's lonely, man"), ghosts, haunted ("by an important life you could have led").. OK, same doleful content, but a lot more upbeat and forms a beautiful contrast to the first song.
I highly recommend this band because it's not typical Alt Country. No. Beautiful violins--it's more like a combination of continental classical mixed in with heartfelt American art-nouveau. Allez-y et achetez-le.
bought Sad Songs...after to listening to "alligator" 1,000 times........2006-11-12
If you have listened to "Sad songs..." once it may not click, but it'll whet your music curiousity. I have to say it, although cliche, it is The National's "The Wall". Pieced toghether song by song with a purpose. One of my best listening experiences ever was playing "sad songs..." and "Cherry Tree" at high volume in my living room with a nice glass of Sapphire and ice.
I laughed, I cried, and caught a good buzz...
You should buy this album if you like true musical talent and thoughtful, intellegent lyrics. This album reverberates on another level.
Buy this album, or Cherry Tree, or Alligator, love it, then go see them live.
absolutely amazing.......2005-11-27
Songs 2 through 9 are some of the best stuff The National has done. Slipping Husband lodges in your head and refuses to leave. I kind of wish it had been the first track on the record. Cardinal, Track 1, has 3 am feel that seems misplaced as the first song but who cares this CD has Husband, Murder Me Rachel, 90 mile water wall (best title ever) etc...
Masterminds.......2005-10-28
Excellent band. Saw them live somewhere in europe a couple years ago and wasn't impressed. Man have they evolved. Buy it, become a better person.
A great discovery.......2004-12-13
The title of this album is misleading. It could be called Funny Songs for Angry Lovers ....or Dirty Songs for Sad Lovers....lyrically, the songs explore different sides of relationships and there is a lot of levity..... song titles like Trophy Wife and Sugar Wife make me think the album title may be intended as a joke. Though who can say. Whatever the case, this is an interesting, intense album.
There are quiet acoustic and electronic ballads like the frst song Cardinal Song and one of the last, Patterns of Fairytales ....but also totally blistering, raging rock songs like Murder Me Rachael and Available. I am partial to the latter....but I think they wouldn't be as effective without the quiet, beautiful moments. As far as influences, there are some hints of americana in the Wilco sense in spots (like 90 Mile Water Wall) but also Joy Division in other songs like Available. I was turned onto the National by a friend who is also a fellow Nick Cave fanatic, but I can't really compare them to any specific Cave era or album. I am more reminded at times of Leonard Cohen and even Silver Jewsand Wilco.

Listen to that song and tell me it is not great. This also contains classics like Tyrant,Victim Of Changes,The Ripper. There is no doubt in my mind that this is Priest's best album. Period!!!!!!!!
I love it.......2007-01-05
I bought this record album when I was a teen, many many years ago. The music sounds just as good now as it did then. Crank it up!
BOW TO THE PRIEST.......2006-10-08
The Metal Gods when they were only Rock Gods. Victim Of Changes is the break out song on this piece. Also a number about Jack The Ripper (The Ripper) which Tim Owens uses as his name after he replaced Rob Halford when he left. This is a true classic album for The Priest, the Tyrants of all.
Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny.......2006-07-18
I was first turned on to this album around '83 - '84. I have a brother ten years older than me and he had Sad Wings on vinyl. When I first started getting into metal/hard rock it was Iron Maiden, Saxon, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Rush, 80's Priest. I was listening to Maiden/Killers one day in my room when he burst in, took the record off and started to put Sad Wings on. I was pissed at first and jumped up to stop him. He pushed me back down and said, "just listen". So I did. I must have listened to Sad Wings 20 to 30 times in a row that evening. I turned all my long haired, metal head buddies on to it the next day. It is probably, if not the best, then one of the best metal albums ever.
The first truly great Judas Priest album!.......2006-06-30
It didn't take Judas Priest long to build on the strengths of "Rocka Rolla" and create an album that is quite close to heavy metal perfection and remains to this day one of their best.
This is a dark, moody masterpiece that would herald further excellence to come such as "Stained Class" and "Killing Machine/Hell Bent For Leather".
Having said that, it is different from what would come after it. It is darker, and there are still some noticeable influences, especially Black Sabbath (not to be wondered at from fellow "Brummies") but also Queen on the likes of "Epitaph".
Glenn Tipton plays piano on a couple of tracks. Don't let that put you off, because his playing adds to the overall mood. I'm not one of those who believes that the occasional keyboard bit kills heaviness. Look at Don Airey and especially Jon Lord for excellent HM keyboards.
The only reason this is getting four instead of five stars is because I would love to see a remaster!

Album Description
With The Sad Machinery of Spring, the acclaimed band of genre-leaping musical adventurers known as Tin Hat begins a new chapter in their remarkable decade-long career. Dropping "trio" from their name, Tin Hat continues to move effortlessly between styles, creating a new kind of acoustic chamber music that melds elements of jazz, folk, classical, and various forms of American and World roots music.
Customer Reviews:
A surpise and a delight........2007-03-15
I heard a track off this played on BBC Radio 3's Late Junction show, and immediately tracked it down. Hmmm, Turtle Island meets Penguin Cafe meets Kronos, directed by Kurt Weill?
Great stuff.
I am Glad about "Sad".......2007-02-23
Tin Hat is one of the precious few groups occupy a space that is uniquely their own.
Formerly known as Tin Hat Trio, multi-instrumentalists Carla Kihlstedt and Mark Orton used fellow founding-member Rob Burger's departure as the impetus to expand the group and shorten the name. Recruiting fellow multi-instrumentalist Ara Anderson, clarinetist Ben Goldberg and harpist Zeena Parkins, the quintet's new CD "The Sad Machinery of Spring" finds a freshly invigorated band artfully exploring and further embellishing the multi-stylistic forays which were synonymous with THT.
Utilizing an assortment of almost two-dozen instruments, the group continues to blend and bend classical, folk, blues, bluegrass, jazz, and world music into a wholly original aural hybrid. Steeped in virtuosity, tempered with understatement and imbued with a hint of irreverence and avant-garde attitude, the fifteen tunes on the new CD are evocative miniatures, wonderfully varied except for their ability to engage and intrigue.
It takes less than three minutes for TH to cast its spell as the haunting familiarity of "Old World" offers up a charming welcome. With Orton's gentle acoustic guitar shaping the backdrop, Goldberg sets the theme afloat before Kihlstedt's violin emerges to gently tuck it in.
"Blind Paper Dragon" finds Anderson's trumpet gliding over the percussive gallop of acoustic guitar, accented with flourishes of both harp and violin. Goldberg's solo sings of Bourbon St. while a moment later his playing takes on an edge as he and Anderson mix it up.
"The Land of Perpetual Sleep" is every bit as spooky one would imagine the place to be. The toy-piano driven march of "Janissary Band" features an array of storybook sounds along with Goldberg's deep-voiced contra-alto clarinet trading fours with correspondingly thick low-end piano.
The esoteric harp interlude "Black Thursday" and Kihlstedt's whispy vocals on "Daisy Bell," ("You'll look sweet upon the seat of a bicycle built for two") represent the full-range of "Machinery's" musical swath.
"Dionysus" receives two divergent readings, the first of which captures the Gershwinesque Americana that colors many TH tunes. This mood is similarly captured by the shades of the Wild-West that flavor "The Tailor's Dummies" and Orton's stellar dobro work on "The Comet."
Tin Hat creates music that is both otherworldly and essential. With interesting tonal and stylistic juxtapositions helping to define a compositional flair which is cinematic and timeless, surprise lurks around every corner.
"The Sad Machinery of Spring" is a great place to meet this truly one-of-a-kind band.
The devil's in the details . . ........2007-02-21
. . . as always.
And this genre-bending band, perhaps more than any other, has those details absolutely nailed.
It was a brilliant move expanding this minimalist group from a trio to a quintet, adding, it must be said, such monster Downtown players as Zeena Parkins (harp) and Ben Goldberg (various clarinets). For me, this move morphs the band from a quirky, generally interesting although somewhat static outfit, into a killer ensemble of absolute spot-on chamber-jazzish players. Still anchored by the heartbreakingly beautiful violin and various exotic string instruments of the inimitable Carla Kihlstedt and the Kevin Breit/Ry Cooderish guitar of Mark Orton, the band has brilliantly expanded its musical palette to include a greater diversity of sounds and moods than ever before, without compromising--indeed, almost magically augmenting--its signature aesthetic.
Throughout the disc emerge spellbinding moments of musical magic: the deft interplay of trumpet, clarinet, guitar, and violin on "Blind Paper Dragon"; the chthonic mysteries of "Dionysus," mesmerically conveyed through the violin/guitar/piano magic of Kihlstedt/Orton/Anderson; the adroit instrumental interweavings of "Drawing Lessons"--almost every tune has its special pleasures. What seems to have been not entirely lacking but insufficiently on display on previous discs--but here in spades--is a kind of rigor and spine that lifts the proceedings from mere prettiness into realms of sheer gloriousness.
This is a band that has grown into one of the most important instrumental ensembles currently on the jazz/New Music scene. Highest recommendation.
Bravo Tin Hat.......2007-02-06
Once again, Tin Hat delievers just what I've been waiting for. The music has a very free flowing feel to it, mainly because the songs are structured without actually sounding like they're structured. Rather than focusing on countless chord changes, the backing rhythm(often a guitar) tends to deviate very little throughout the songs, giving the other instruments room to breathe and explore the possible note combinations without feeling rushed. Because each instrument has the potential to shift the overall tone of a song back and forth, the music often sounds epic. Yet, because average song length is around 3:30, the epic quality of the music is concisely packaged , never sounding empty, but instead rich and fulfilling(imagine a musical cheese cake).

Sublime, sensual, ecstatic.......2007-05-08
As much as I love Tim Buckley's first two albums, this is where he really finds his true voice, heading into jazz territory with an open heart. From the first note to the last, his emotions are naked, deep, filled with yearning & loss & soaring joy & regret, often at the same time. And that magnificent voice! It plumbs the depths, it touches the skin of heaven, and it conveys the experience of several lifetimes as it caresses & shapes each word like a master sculptor. The music itself is a match for its singer, melodic & inventive, surprising the listener with sudden unexpected changes & shifts. But for all the experimentation going on, the songs themselves never get lost. This is a timeless work, one to be heard again & again -- most highly recommended!
"I was lost without a song, without a melody".......2007-04-07
To paraphrase those makeshift obituaries to sensitive artists who Died Too Young, Tim Buckley was not Too Good for This World, he was never of it in the first place. Transcendental without being part of the faddish hippydom of the late '60s, Buckley's music was an excuse for his voice to float above the free (but never "Free") jazz and psychedelic blues of his and his collaborators' instruments.
"Happy Sad" can glibly be called "The most beautiful album ever made", although this statement should not hide the fact that it really is just that. Lost in a reverie of free-flowing thoughts, Buckley removed himself from the psychedelic pastiche of "Goodbye And Hello", and thus from just about everyone else writing songs meant to fit into the 3:30 minute grooves of the commercial record format. The songs are a true mirror to jazz, insofar as the obvious painstaking nature of the musical composition is made to seem so carefree by dint of Buckley's rapturous lyrics. The songs could be about sex, or love, or the heroin that was to claim Buckley's life some years later, or just about the crashing waves on the beach that close "Love from Room 109..."
Buckley never had much commercial success in his lifetime or any of the others that followed. Rather than lamenting the fact that someone so talented should be written off by so many even now as a "troubadour", we should just appreciate these extraterrestrial notes from a man who somehow never existed at all.
So Beautiful It Hurts.......2007-01-15
The story of Tim Buckley has a disquieting familiarity - dead at 28 he had already been through the classic cycle: raw prodigy, hot property, creative disillusionment, unpopular experimentation, and bitter confrontations with industry executives. Of the many gems produced during his brief, intense career - Happy Sad shines most brightly.
Buckley emerged fully formed as a folk singer, one of many at the time. With a 12-string guitar that rang out lush and strong, and an astounding voice dancing far and wide across a 4-octave range, he made for a very compelling one-man show. Buckley's voice was slightly reminiscent of Steve Winwood's; it had that same choirboy spirituality. Some of his high notes were simply chilling.
By the time he made Happy Sad, Buckley was looking for a milieu that melded jazz and folk - no easy trick, but he manages it flawlessly here. This CD feels very integrated, the otherworldly sensibility flows seamlessly from one track to the next. That said, he is clearly taking creative risks, jazzy detours that did not endear him to his folk following. Using his voice both as a storytelling vehicle and improvisational instrument, Buckley jams with the other players, most notably the ethereal vibes of David Friedman.
In Happy Sad, Tim Buckley seems bound and determined to avoid generating hits suited for airplay, almost as if he is deliberately thwarting studio executives. This was his most commercially successful project, however, that is not saying a great deal.
Find a rainy day and a person you love, nail the door shut. There is a special magic in this CD that doesn't come along very often. While Buzzin' Fly and Gypsy Woman stand out, every moment of Happy Sad has something wonderful to tell you.
It Takes You Places You've Never Been Before.......2006-07-28
The absolute summit of Tim Buckley's career. This is the most haunting, lovely, stunning album ever. It will take you to places you've never been before and leave you wanting more.
Haunting Best Work By Best Buckley.......2005-12-17
It is a tragedy that the late Tim Buckley is not more widely appreciated. He has become most well known as the late Jeff Buckley's father, and, not to disparage the very talented son, the father is the true genius of the clan. "Happy/Sad" is, perhaps, the most fully realized of Tim Buckley's works; meltingly melancholy and wistful. It opens with "Strange Feelin'", whose opening chords echo Miles Davis on "Kinda Blue". The nod to jazz is only the beginning of a diverse musical tapestry. The vocal on "Strange Feelin'" reveal Buckley at his mind-numbing, note-bending best. "Buzzin' Fly" is next, a lovely, lilting, ode to new love. "Dream Letter" is an achingly regretful tale of a son never known, now grown. "Love From Room 109..." is a most remarkable piece, both mournful and hopeful. It flows through four distinct parts in its 10+ minutes, the sound of the surf providing a unifying aural backdrop. There are very few songs like "Love From...". The sprse, understated instrumentation is perfect to the mood of "Happy/Sad", and allows the instrument of Buckley's voice to be the focus. Vibraphone, marimba, 12-string and (occasional) electric guitar, congas, and bass (acoustic and electric) are artfully arranged, and a testimony to Elektra Records skill with folk and jazz. If you've never given Tim Buckley a serious listen or only know him by way of his son, start with "Happy/Sad", then go on to "Lorca", "Star Sailor" and by that time maybe the long missed "Blue Afternoon" will be out on CD.

Customer Reviews:
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

A delightfully buoyant, mock-creepy collection of film scores from Hollywood's first and best call for quirk, strangeness, and charm. Focusing on Elfman's post-1992 work (much of it for director Tim Burton), this 2 CD set features excerpts from Edward Scissorhands, To Die For, and Batman Returns, among other lesser items. -- Jeff Bateman
Customer Reviews:
Priceless, at any price.......2007-07-06
Years ago, watching peter Jennings cover the funeral procession of Princess Diana, my soul was captured by some hauntingly beautiful music that at times played in the background. So began my mission to find out what it was, who wrote it and how I could get it. After some correspondence with the network I was put in touch with the woman who "put together" that part of the programming. All she could remember is that it came from the movie "Black Beauty". THEN I found out how many versions of that had been made lol. With determination, I finally found it, and had a local music store order it for me.
There are no words to describe what this music does to me. I did try listening to some of the other tracks, but they didn't even come close. I rate this music right up there with the 1971 score for "Jane Eyre" by John Willams... and that's pretty high :D
Good overview.......2007-04-18
Very nice overview of Elfman work. Insufficient by itself but worth having along with the full soundtracks. Bonus disc is a nice extra.
Great Music!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-08
I Love Danny Elfman's music so much that I have started my own collection of the soundtracks that he composed. For a while, I was trying to find the "Beetlejuice" theme song from the TV show, but thanks to this release, I finally have it!!! Keep up the good work Elfman!
Very nice for a Danny Elfman collection.......2005-08-02
Music For A Darkened Theater, Vol.2 is a great cd!!! I love all of the tracks on both cd's,but my fav. ones are the t.v. scores and the This Is Halloween demo!!! If you love this, then i recomend looking at all the actually albums on this cd and his other works!!!! good job,Danny Elfman.
Bring on Volume 3.......2005-05-04
The liner notes and "This is Halloween Demo" on this compilation are well worth the CD price by themselves. Danny comments on each of the tracks on the CDs which is a rare and ego-free look at what a composer thinks of his own work.
Edward Scissorhands is magical, Black Beauty is a rollercoaster of emotion, and Dolores Claiborne makes me want to find the nearest piano. This is not a "Most Popular" compilation, rather it aptly showcases Danny Elfman's (and Orchestrator, Steve Bartek's) brilliance and wide range of style.
Every suite has an Elfman signature, such as the layered complexity which never sounds overdone, or the use of a choir as an instrument.
This (and Volume 1) are examples of the work of a modern day composer who consistently stands out as one of the best.
If you like this and have the spare cash, grab the individual scores from some of the movies he has worked on, including "Men In Black", "Spiderman", "Batman", "Batman Returns", "Nightmare Before Christmas", "Edward Scissorhands", "Mars Attacks" and so many more.

After stepping up to the major-label plate with The Moon and Antarctica, Modest Mouse reach back to their roots with Sad Sappy Sucker. Sucker is actually the band's first recording, released in 2001 but created back in 1994. It was shelved in favor of Lonesome Crowded West as their debut, but Sucker is still a fine piece of the Modest Mouse lineage.
Although parts of Sucker are experimental compared to the band's current polish, this isn't some rarity to be enjoyed only by collectors. Breezy melodies build into jagged choruses as singer Isaac Brock shows he can be both tender and playfully aggressive. Most of the songs clock in between two and three minutes, leaving room for numerous gems in the course of the 24-track album. While 12 of the songs come from a recording session with K Records' Calvin Johnson, a chunk of Sucker material comes from Brock's "Dial-a-Song" phase, during which callers heard new songs by dialing into his answering machine. These experiments range from lo-fi combos of distorted instruments and whiny vocals to complete songs, like the bluesy rock jam on "Secret Agent X-9." The Dial-a-Songs--and a message left by Murder City Devils front man Spencer Moody ("Call to Dial-a-Song")--are both comic relief and proof that Modest Mouse didn't gain their indie-rock cult status by accident. The talent's been there from the beginning. --Jennifer Maerz

Exclusive to fans? Maybe. Still worth buying? Yes........2007-03-27
This is definitely not going to hook your ear like the new major label records will. But most of us didn't start listening to Modest Mouse because they hooked our ears.
This album reminds me of Nirvana's "Outcesticide" records that were released to the gray market. It is a lo-fi collection of tunes that paints a portrait of the band's beginnings. It has a handful of gems that are unforgettable but wouldn't have fit on any of the other records. I would be very sad if I didn't have "Dukes Up", "Birds vs. Worms", or "It Always Rains On A Picnic".
I think that this album shows that Modest Mouse is willing to make its purist indie roots available to their fans even as they grow into their current semi-famous pop-idol status.
So, yes. You should buy this record. But only buy it for the right reasons.
Probably for fans only..........2006-12-26
Right of the bat, let me say that if you are not well aquainted with Modest Mouse's catalouge, you probably will not enjoy this album. It's a collection of some of the band's earliest work, much of it recorded well before their proper debut full-length in '96. This isn't a very accessible collection of songs...the sound quality is a little rough, and the musicianship and song-writing are choppy at times. The median age of the band was around 21 at this time, and it shows in the songs. However, fans of the band's later work will likely find this an interesting glimpse into the band's origins. You might not like all of the songs (the "dial a song" bits and demos clumped at the rear of the album are interesting at first, but do not reward repeated listens) but a handful of tracks (such as "Wagon Ride Return" and "Dukes Up") are punchy, energetic numbers that suggest the potentiol this band would later go on to fufill.
Those two songs are great, hands down (which boosts my over-all rating for this album to 3 stars). There are a handful of other decent songs that Modest Mouse fans will enjoy as well. I wouldn't consider this an essential purchase, however...there just aren't enough good songs to justify paying full price. If you can get it for cheap as a used disc (like I did), go for it. It won't cost much. Overall, this a decent relase; not great, but an interesting glimpse into the band's early days for fans. If you're not already familliar with Modest Mouse, though, you probably won't find much to interest you. But, if you one day find yourself to be a Modest Mouse fan, you might want to give this disc a spin.
Uh. haha. .......2006-12-11
Well, this album is pretty terrible, but I like it anyway.
If you're looking for an album to get you into Modest Mouse, then this definitely isn't it.
Anyone else who would want it probably already has it.
Horrible.......2006-09-19
There are maybe one or two songs on here that I like but man did MM really miss the boat on this one. They're my favorite band but it seems like this is one CD they just didn't put any thought or effort into, it just sounds terrible.
Chaotic Lo-fi Sound Beyond The Surface:Perspective from a Experimental Guitarist.......2006-04-30
No Music has perfection... and overproduced records are polished surfaces....This shows the early essence of Modest Mouse at its prime...and it shows the energy of that indie guitar sound of minor melodies and chaos through the early years....
When I saw the abstract cover in a independent record store...I was curious of what it would be like....As noisy and garage it may sound, the guitar clashing of complex melodious chords, and Issac Brock's vocals sound expressive like beat poetry, words that come straight out of nowhere, then put into lyrics. This album sounds so pure and to me remains a classic indie record...It sounds like fragments
of an analog tape collage of sound to form into that work of art.....that came from musicians that wanted to make music out of the equipment that they had....
It's a perfect example...it shows that whatever you record; even if it is lo-fi equipment: you could do amazing things with it if you have any crazy creative, imaginative ideas formed into sound....

What's this? A Swedish band that doesn't sound like it was born in a garage? In 2005, the only thing more rare would be a CD copy of Neil Young's Time Fades Away -- one that would certainly find a place in the hearts of the Perishers, not so much for its volume but its profound sense of darkness. On their debut album, the young Scandinavian band sounds like a cross between Keane and Athlete, offering somber songs punctuated with tumbling pianos, melodramatic lyrics and an unmistakable earnestness that only comes from either being a member of Coldplay or living somewhere that doesn't get enough sunshine. "I've always been dreamer," sings Ola Kluft, "I've had my head among the clouds." --Aidin Vaziri
Album Description
Slow down. And get lost in the world of The Perishers. The Swedish band's American debut, "Let There Be Morning," is a blend of emotional wandering, poetic insight and stark, yet inspirational surroundings. Their new album is due out in April 2005.

Hypnotic.......2006-08-21
The Perishers are amazing!! "Let There Be Morning" is a dreamy and beautiful album. Highly recommended!!
The best cd I've heard in a long time!!.......2006-04-23
I don't usually write a review, but when I bought this cd and listened to it for the first time, I absolutely fell in love!! There isn't one song that I don't like. The Perishers have a great way of combining smooth sound and wonderful lyrics in a perfect combination. This cd is perfect for a long car ride, working at the office or just hanging out with friends. Every song flows nicely into the next one. Even the last song on the cd is an appropriate way to end the whole collection. Very rarely do you ever come across a cd that not only do you love more then just two songs on it, but you can listen to it over and over again and never get tired of them. I can't wait for their next cd to come out. Once you buy this cd and listen to you, you will instintly become a Perisher fan for life!!
Am I weird?.......2006-04-21
I guess I'm the only one who knows of the Perishers through Sims 2. They're on the "College Rock" soundtrack. I kept listening to "Sway" in Simlish and wondering what the actual words were - eventually I had to look them up! I'm so pleased - I love off-beat bands. I recommend the Perishers (and other Sims 2 musics) to anyone.
stunner.......2005-10-31
Goodnes gravy I love this cd. Sweet melodic music the singer has a gorgeous voice. Every song is perfect.
Best new music around.......2005-08-31
I was trying to think of what I can say about this most excellent cd. At first, I thought "if you like music like that sung by Dido, Anna Nalick, Everything But The Girl Blue Nile, Simon and Garfunkel, or Peter, Paul and Mary, then you have to buy this cd". Rest assured this music collection is not for lovers of hard rock, hip-hop or the like. But if you are into mellow music that sounds great, you owe it to yourself to purchase this cd. I think this cd is one of the best I have ever purchased. Give it a try and I assure you, you won't be disapointed.
