On a scale of 1 to 5 I rate the music a 1 and the lyrics a 2. I agree on many points with the reviewer A.W. Howell(read the review). The only songs that I liked was 'Irene'(liked the content and that guitar...),'Do you know'was alright and I liked the message contained in 'In the air'but besides that it is not worth listening to. From a Christian girl that is into latin music,r&b,some rock and quality Christian music this rock-rap genre just didn't do it for me. Oh, and what's up with some of these other tracks like 'Toby's Mac', 'Tru-Dog', and 'Triple Skinny'??? I expected so much more, especially more profound lyrics that grab your attention and get you really thinking about Jesus and living a meaningful Chrisitan life. *Helpful advice before buying a cd whether on-line or not:Listen to samples of each song on the cd if possible and look up the lyrics.

Toby's first solo album does not disappoint! This is a collection of rock,rap,funk,and some entertaining interludes. Though dc Talk is nothing to shrug at, a lot of fans will be surprised and delighted at the intensity of this album. "J-Train", "Momentum", "I'm Yours", and "Extreme Days" will have you movin, shakin, and singing along. Don't just take my word for it, take Toby's proven track record as one of the most talented, passionate, and God-centered artists out there. Buy this cd and do your "praising" LOUDLY!

I'm going try and write a meaningful review rather than spout my opinion on it!

This album is torn down the middle between the produced rock style of 'So help me God'- big guitar riffs, big drums and funky bass lines, with well produced grungy lyrics- and laid back r+b type grooves.
The rock stuff has leant a little more toward Linin Park than Jesus Freak was, and it's quite 'high octane' it's nice for a blast when you need a quiick mood change, or in the car. By the time it get's to 'I'm Yours' we are sounding like CC'd linkin park- but the album isn't that bad!
Then r+b stuff is smooth, well produced but not quite brilliant- it's not true enough to the genre to really grab r+b fans, but it's a nice tonic for the rock gin.

Don't expect loads of material for your 18 tracks- a lot of it is spoof! Although tru-dog is 100% quality material!

Christian America has a really bad reputation here [with it's hypocritical churches and dog fights over meaningless "theology" (or worse, politics)- while standing by as America chokes the world], so I was concerned about the faith represented in this album- DC talk we're straight up with their lyrics in jesus freak- "what have we become" really challenging their audience's faith and lifestyles.
Toby Mac doesn't quite live up to that though- thought Momentum is still definitely _christian_ music.
Mac obviously has a good solid faith, and he is right on with it, but I would have liked a few more lyrics to really push at the consciences of his listeners, and challenge us all to live better- for me there is a little too much content about 'the mac' himself, the industry or the hip-hop scene- and not enough about the man nailed to a tree (who our lives should really be about).


The rock tracks earn 5 stars- (Extreme days has a little boy very reminiscent of the "guy with a big fat belly"!)
But it goes down to 3 stars because of the slightly under par r+b, too high many spoof tracks, and lyrics which aren't the challenge to modern believers that they could be.

The musical side isn't good enough to being CCM forward or make waves in the genre, or atract non-Christian fans, and the lyrics side isn't challenging enough to spark fervent faith and renewal - both of which Jesus Freak definitely managed.

Buy it and play the hard bits loud to chill out, its a nice album all the same.

This outing the the Elastic Band lacks the stretch I was hoping for the band. Overall the tunes are put together well, but they have the preditable feel of R&B solos. I didn't hear any "real" progression with this band moving into unchartered territory. This would be a good CD to introduce your R&B friends into Jazz.

This is by far my favorite of Joshua Redmans albums. I can play it over and over without tiring of it. It's definitely not as traditional sounding as his other projects, but I think it's a great step. This is a very creative album with no duds. I like to see artists evolve and try different things. Imagine is Sting were still doing top 40 pop tunes like the early days. It would get tiresome after a while. (But then again, I think top 40 music is tiresome before it begins)

There's a lot of great groove and funky stuff on this album. Kind of like Down To The Bone's stuff, but not repetitive. I personally haven't noticed the short length of the songs. I usually play it on my home stereo while doing something else, so I'm not faced with the track times like I would be on the computer.

Unless you hate jazz you should definitely own this album.

This is the first Joshua Redman CD I've had the opportunity to hear. Man, this guy's got it. I read some of the other reviews and a couple mentioned this is not as good as other CDs he has released. I absolutely can not imagine it getting any better than this.

This cat reminds me of Monk, Byrd, Hancock, the Headhunters, and Cannonball all wrapped up in one. It is a throwback with great respect for the masters. It is a grand relief from the blind purchases I have made of so-called new artist whose work sound as scripted and redundant as a Broadway play.

This cat can improvise, he is versatile, and the short cuts leave you begging for more. If he is smart, he would take those very same short cuts and develop them to full length on a future CD.

But since others say this is not as good as other releases, I am compelled to order the older releases to see for myself. If they are correct, then I can only say it will be money well spent!

In the early 1990s, when he first gained acclaim, Joshua Redman was one of the bright hopes of jazz. He played with a fresh energy and fire, yet maintained touch with the jazz tradition in a way that all music fans could appreciate. In the last five years, however, he seems to have lost his moorings, and this latest overhyped album is merely another sad example of his musical drifting -- and our loss. I'm astonished by the rave reviews other reviewers here and elsewhere have given Redman's latest. This record is little more than rehashed funk, with a saxophone overlay that is miles short of the ability and inventiveness Redman displayed when he was playing so-called "old-fashioned" acoustic jazz. The tunes are nothing special, the thumping electronic rhythmic accompaniment is boring and heavy-handed, and Redman seems to have nothing interesting to say. Here's one (former) fan who hopes Redman will find his way back, if not to mainstream jazz, at least to credibility.

This one took a few listens to grow on me: one's initial impression is of outlandish mannerism, with Jamal constantly building for pummelling climaxes & then dropping back to a dead whisper. Yet give it time: there's plenty that's idiosyncratic here but nothing illogical, & fans of Monk or (believe it or not) early Cecil Taylor will find themselves right at home. Jamal writes some terrific tunes--"In Search Of" is incomparably fierce & probing, "Island Fever" is balmy, "I'll Take the 20" is a thrilling ride even in its telescoped presentation here. One track, "Whisperings", has vocals by the late OC Smith (of "Little Green Apples" game); it is unexpectedly one of the album's highlights. (What's the last time you could say that of a jazz album with a "featured vocalist"?) The rest of the repertoire is equally challenging: some unhackneyed choices of standards ("I've Never Been in Love Before", "Where Are You", & "I'll Always Be With You") & a Monty Alexander tune, the delightful "You Can See". -- The rhythm section--Jammes Cammack on bass, Idris Muhammad on drums--is never thrust into the spotlight with solo features, but Jamal interacts so closely with them--devilish feints & parries, dropouts & crescendos, allusive sketchy passages & hard-swinging passages--that they're never exactly "background" either. All in all, a stunning album from the old master, & among the year's best mainstream jazz discs. Do try.

Well, there are piano trio records and there...is this amazing piece of work. Brilliantly played, brilliantly written and brilliantly recorded. I've long been a fan of the piano trio format (unlike the previous reviewer) but this CD is of revelatory quality. The first track alone is worth the entry fee as Jamal's individual style (which mixes delicacy at the high end and thunder and lightning at the low end of the keyboard)sucks you in. Then you find yourself hearing Idris Muhammed's drumming almost as a piece in itself and the bass playing is of equal quality. Enough raving by this obviously delighted reviewer! If you've read this far then you can stop. Because you need time to hop on the internet and buy this CD. P.S. It's not dinner party music. This CD demands to be listened to. Put it on and amaze your friends.

5 out of 5 stars I'm shaking my head in awe of this man.......2003-04-25

Ahmad Jamal is 72 years old. How many other septuagenarians do you know who are at the top of their game? And we're not talking about how well he plays for an old guy. We're talking about how well he plays. Period. Forget his age. At a recent NY gig, he had jazz pianists from all generations coming in and checking out his amazing chops, conception, verve, and spirit.

I'll admit it, I didn't really used to like the piano trio format. I thought there wasn't enough going on, generally. Too monochromatic. Not exotic enough. But I've changed my mind, and it's some of the younger players like Ethan Iverson, Craig Taborn, Jean-Michel Pilc, and Matthew Shipp that got me hooked on this format. Which has led me to explore some of the more established players like Abdullah Ibrahim , Monty Alexander, and Ahmad Jamal.

In Search of finds Jamal as energized and galvanizing as I've ever heard him. I was impressed with some of his recent Birdology dates, esp. the one with George Coleman. But something brilliant is going on here that, despite his recent fine releases, makes this disc among the best he's ever recorded.

A very percussive (esp. at the bottom of the piano) and rhythmically and harmonically sophisticated player, he can nevertheless be delicate and very fleet-fingered where called for (check out his playing on "You Can See" for the full Jamal arsenal in all its grandeur).

Highlights for me include new originals "Island Fever" (I very much like his quirky take on Afro-Latin rhythms and sensibilities), "Excerpts from I'll Take 20," really just a teaser of a much longer work, which, I must say, sounds very promising, and "Where Are You Now," with it's brilliant structure and chord voicings." A big surprise for me was how much I like "Whisperings," a vocal number featuring O.C. Smith, a truly gifted jazz singer, himself up there in years. I say a surprise, because I don't generally like jazz vocals that much and because that kind of thing can unnecessarily disrupt the flow of what otherwise might be a seamlessly proceeding endeavor. Fortunately, the vibe remains in tact, and one ends up thankful for this slight departure.

I continue to rejoice in the glories of so many superior, even definitive, jazz releases in the first part of 2003, this being one of the very best.

This CD has some great songs on it. One of my fave things is that it has 2 re-mixes of one of my fave songs, Irene. Extreme Days is really good, Somebody's Watching is great, and, well, every song is really good. This is really worth your money!!!!

I'm 48 years old. I bought this CD because my pre-teen and teenage kids like rap music...not me. I was hoping to find music they would like and that expresses the Christian values I have (vs the murder and mayhem common in rap). This CD certainly fits the bill. However, to my surprise I found I liked the CD! Is this good rap music? I wouldn't know. My kids love it and I like it, which is all that matters to me. I like DC Talk too, and didn't realize until after I bought this CD that this is the same Toby. Keep up the good work Toby! I appreciate the help in staying in touch with my kids.

My 1st experience with Tobymac. I didn't realize this was a remix cd when I bought it but I'm now glad that it was. The tracks are fun to listen to and don't sound like your typical techno beat remixes. Especially listen to 1. J-Train 2. Yours, 7. Get This Party Started, 13. Irene, and my personal favorite- 8. Extreme Days. This album gets me hyped up, I feel more energetic just popping it in! Awesome grooving cd.

    5 out of 5 stars Beginning a Survey at the End: Less Familiar British Works for Strings.......2006-07-20

    The very fine concept and well-executed 'English String Miniatures' adds great depth to the appreciation of that particular British sound dealing with string orchestras. This Volume Four is most appealing because it offers works unfamiliar to most of us. David Lloyd-Jones conducts the fine Northern Sinfonia in performances that are assured, finely detailed and capture that special mood that suffuses each of these charming works.

    One surprise to this listener was the work of Peter Hope whose 'Momentum Suite' opens this concert. The work incorporates tunes and dance melodies in the first two movements and rollicks in the third movement to an ever increasing rapid tarantella-like spin. Frank Bridge, one of the hallowed greats of English composers, is well represented with his 'Valse-Intermezzo' and 'Scherzo Phantastick' (sic), the latter in an arrangement from his string quartet in E minor.

    Other less well-known but very fine composers - Adam Carse ('Sketches'), Ernest Tomlinson ('Graceful Dance') and Paul Lewis ('English Suite') provide diversions in the midportion of the recording and the final works include Holst's 'A Moorside Suite' and Delius' beautiful 'Aquarelles' (from his 'songs to be sung on a summer night').

    David Lloyd-Jones has a particular affinity for this music and he draws lush string playing from the Northern Sinfonia. It makes an interesting diversion to begin listening to this four-volume set of English String Miniatures with Volume Four and creates a commitment to buy the other three volumes!     I picked up this recording on the strength of the first three volumes of the series even though this installment had few titles with which I was familiar. From the opening dance of Peter Hope's Momentum Suite I had a feeling I would not be disappointed. And I wasn't the rest of Hope's suite is as wonderful as it's opener with an Intermezzo that is beautiful and the playful third movement Momentum.

    Next up two pieces, from composer Frank Bridge, both of which were new to me in this new string arrangements by Paul Hindmarsh. Fine examples of why Bridge is one of the last GREAT British composers, I'm accustomed to hearing them in their original string quartet formats, but Hindmarsh's effective treatments retain the feel of the original works.

    Other famous composers represented on the disk are Holst with his Moorside Suite, written, as were most of his works for string orchestra, for the junior orchestra at St. Paul's Girls School. This work which seems so at home played by a string orchestra was originally composed for brass band... I just can't imagine, especially the gentle and flowing Nocturne movement.

    Two other highlights are wonderful performances of Delius' Two Aquarelles, both arranged for string orchestra by Eric Fenby four years after the composer's death. The Lento has more than a touch of melancholy to it that is sure to put a lump in your throat.

    Paul Lewis was unknown to me but his English Suite made me an immediate fan. Probably the most recent composition from the four volumes in the English String Miniatures series, composed in 1993, it sounds like both homage and pastiche at the same time. "Neo-pastoral", then? Yet still, the Meditation movement is just another example of how well the British write for string orchestra.

    Pick this one up (and if you don't have volumes 1 -3, you'll need them as well).

    This is one of Jessica's first, but sounds like it was recorded at a pinnacle of development. I bought it direct from Jessica when she was hawking CDs at the end of her first of what would come to be 3 separate gigs in Victoria, B.C. (the last which resulted in a CD of its own). She was right; the group really cooks and the joy of the trio is immediate. By now, you may recognize some of her flashing embroidery, but it is delivered with such ebullient verve that it sounds fresh as can be. "Stonewall Blues" could be her theme song. On "You Do Something to Me" she jumps around octaves to present the melody in hilarious bytes,then swings it to the ground. The originals are delightful. Monkish humour abounds throughout. The only weak link might be the final "Autumn Leaves" where the parts may dazzle but the whole seems incomplete. An essential recording for any of her fans.

    I first heard of Jennifer back about 1980 when she was a Jazzbo, but looked like some coffee house hippie playing Smelly Cat. I went to GIT around 1990 and would sit in her one-on-one sessions she was awesome. Then hearing her with Jeff Beck, she is scary good. Every serious guitar player has to have Jennifer Batten CD's in their stack of CD's to study.

    Jeff Beck was once quoted as being shocked when he saw Ms. Batten in person for the first time. To wit: "...I expected someone who was introverted and did nothing but practice all the time, because you'd have to do nothing but practice all the time to be that good!!!". Amen to that observation. I have followed with a passion her 2-handed techniques from her days as a GP magazine columnist. I got my 1st taste of what it could sound like from one of her GIT teaching tapes. NEVER could I dream that the amalgamation of her composition skills and technique (i.e., her total artistry) could be so beautifully, powerfully devistating as reflected on this and her other 2 CDs (5-stars for the lot of them). Just stunning stuff. Simply put, if anyone wants to hear a true guitar visionary apply her musical gift and craft in a spellbinding way - buy the CD(s) - be silent - just listen and absorb (sit down if you can - but you'll likely be too energized to allow it)! Who should know brilliance better than the maestro Jeff Beck; he is, he said she is, and the resultant truth is most obvious.

    What a brilliant album! Too bad she is not getting the recognition she really deserves. Excellent and unusual compositions with a world tinge (Scotsman in the Caribbean? Her guitar really does sound like bagpipes! ). Lots of really interesting sounds and tones from a great guitarist! The rhythm section is also outstanding - Glen Sobel on drums is incredible. looking forward to the next effort.

    Brilliant execution of rock, jazz, and world music. Wonderful musical journey that'll take you places you've never been. Just wish guitar would've a bit louder in the mix. :-)

    Momentum Space throws a sucker punch with its billing as a trio album, when in fact the three legends--tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman, drummer Elvin Jones, and pianist Cecil Taylor--only perform together on two selections. But when they perform as a trio, it's a rare treat. On Redman's "Nine" Taylor unravels his customary arsenal of tone clusters, percussive jabs, and jarring trills. Jones keeps Taylor's nervy activity and Redman's sweet passionate cries in forward motion as he propels the composition with thundering polyrhythms. The trio takes a comparatively reflective view on Taylor's "Is," in which the pianist's broken-glass-like shards are balanced by Redman's Ornette-ish wails. The other compositions feature the musicians in either duet or solo settings. Taylor's solo performance of "Life As" finds the CD at its most pensive, while the duet between Redman and Jones on "Spoonin'" amounts to the CD's most playful and swinging moments. All in all, Momentum Space results in an engaging, if not erratic, listening experience. --John Murph

    Three masters of forward-looking jazz coming together to create....something brilliant.

    Okay, fine, sometimes the idea of the "meeting of the masters" can disappoint, but not here. The album, although not a trio album per-se, features brilliant solo work and interaction between the musicians.

    What I found particularly interesting is the breaking down of the group into duos for the different compositions. Doing so creates an entirely different world of sound. Redman and Jones w/out Cecil Taylor results in groovy, hip music. Taylor and Jones is this amazing sonic barrage of notes and rhythms (neither instrument is at the forefront, it's great). And so on...

    So, yes, this is an album that lives up to the promises on the cover. It is well-worth the investment.

    I've been playing this intermixed with Glenn Gould's "Bach's Goldberg Variations", and actually enjoy this more! The first track "Nine" reminds me of atoms (of type Redman, Taylor, and Jones) colliding together in musical space. Very ingenious! All three musicians , although rarely intersecting in the time dimension, create complementary musical space with respect to one another. This was my first major exposure to Cecil Taylor's style of piano, and I must listen to more of him. He and Jones complement each other well, in that I've always thought of Jones as a "lyrical drummer", while Taylor seems to be able to create interesting percussion sounds with his piano.

    This musical document represents a significant example of the level to which Africa has influenced European music. The quintessential European instrument, the piano, is here played percussively. The drums are played melodically, and "talk", and create a "soundscape" (witness the shimmering waves created by the cymbals of Mr Jones behind Mr Taylor during his solo on track 6) whilst the saxophone of Mr Redman mimics the human voice so important in African music. The three artists have contributed much to the development of music over the past 40 years. We owe them a debt of gratitude. This is an excellent example of their art. Although conversations prevail, the soliloquy on track two by Mr Jones has an almost perfect structure and is a powerful testimony to Afro-American drumming. We do miss something though. Just as it is a revelation to have witnessed Mr Thelonious Monk "play" the piano, so it is revelatory to visually witness the plasticity, the melding, of Mr Taylor with his instrument and with the music - dance, sculpture and sound interweave to make a more emotionally powerful experience. In the meantime, we will just have to close our eyes and imagine as we listen intently to the music on this CD. Superbly engineered by Jay Newland. Thanks to The Creative Music Institute.

    This album was a surprise when it first appeared: while Cecil Taylor, Dewey Redman & Elvin Jones are all masters of forwardlooking 1960s jazz, one would hardly expect such individual & differently-oriented players to gel together. Jones, despite the enormous complexity of the rhythms & sounds he creates, has typically still preferred to maintain the drums' timekeeping role (having left Coltrane's band, for instance, as Coltrane moved more and more towards completely "free" playing). Taylor, on the other hand, has since the early 1960s become the leading exponent of a highly percussive & rhythmic but freely-measured piano style.

    This recording, as most reviewers have noted, is misleadingly packaged as a trio recording, when only the first and sixth tracks (ten and twenty minutes long, respectively) have all three musicians together. I'm inclined to think this not necessarily a bad thing: the shorter of the two tracks, "Nine", is an amazing confrontation, perhaps the best thing on the album; the 20-minute track, "Is", is I think the one weak track on the disc, episodic & rambling. It's telling that on "Nine" Jones elects to play in time, while on "Is" he tries for free-tempo playing.

    But with the exception of "Is"--which anyway has its moments too--the rest of this album is first-rate. There's a fine, melodic drum solo by Jones; a nice solo piece by Taylor; a brilliant duet between Redman & Jones; and a good duo between Taylor & Jones. A brief Redman solo ends the disc--it's only 49 seconds & is sufficiently good I wish there were more. So, despite my reservations about the one (longest) track, there's plenty on here that deserves a listen.

    I got this record last Christmas and immediately made a tape of it for my car - I had to listen to it all the time. All three giants sound great, the album has nice liner notes, and I love the Einsteinian notion of "Momentum Space" as it relates to this transformative restructuralist music. Elvin Jones made another wonderful trio album a few years ago with his brother Hank and George Mraz in tribute to his brother Thad. "Momentum Space" has a different kind of beauty. Check it out! : )
