A Collection this comprehensive is generally defined by what it leaves out, but first let's look at what you get:

1-Working Class Dog (1981): complete
2-Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet (1982): all but one song
3-Living In Oz (1984): complete
4-Hard to Hold SDTK (1985): 3 of 6 songs
5-Tao (1986): 5 of 10 songs

and the LONG out of print

6-Rock of Life (1988): all but one song (making this collection well worth the price of admission were it devoid of everything else)

Strange that the folks who released this CD decided to leave off "American Girl" from SHSMY which was featured in movies and on T.V. a lot around the time of it's release. Perhaps it's because the "Legendary" series is put out by BMG Australia who feel that Australian folks don't need an ode to "American" girls on their Springfield comps (?). I don't however, think it's a completely bad thing that only half of TAO made the cut because what's here should peak the un-initiated's interest. TAO is a VERY good album but it's still widely available and generally quite cheap. The inclusion of all but Rick's cover of The Small Faces "Groovy" from RoL is where you really get your money's worth. RoL is perhaps his smoothest and most substantive record ever. Where BMG really missed the boat was not including more songs from the "Hard to Hold" Soundtrack. This album is selling for stupidly high fundage at online auctions and the like. Criminally missing from HtH is "Don't Walk Away" which was a charted hit in several countries around the world. Still, BMG is to be commended for getting liscense to include early hits "Speak to the Sky" and "Take a Hand," although the latter is bizarrely way out of chronological order.

You should note that even though this collection is relatively new on the scene, it is not digitally remastered. The source material is mastered to itself which makes for an dynamically consistant listen but there are other collections out there with much cleaner and brighter sound.

Overall, a very affordable way to get a tremendous amount of Rick's, until only recently, frustratingly underrated musical output. Only loses a star because BMG clearly had the authority (and the time remaining on the discs) to make this a truly complete anthology, but for some reason didn't.

Great - a great compilation of Rick's early & heyday prime songs - carry this with you and leave 4 other cds at home. So glad this was released - listen all the time. Superb collection! Great to pair with Karma - more recent cd not inlcuded in this listing. Buy it, you'll like it. Great variety of Rick Springfield music.

This must be the only collection that can be really called "the best".Along with the well known hits other songs that should be on a collection like this ("cant stop hurting you","one reason"to name a few).Still its a shame that "writen in rock" from "tao" is missing.Since the cd shows deep knowledge on Ricks material the absence of this great song is a real mystery!!
Overall a good effort!

This is the BEST collection of Rick Springfield songs out there and practically the only way to hear all the songs except one from the Rock of Life album. It is worth the price just to have great sounding copies of Honeymoon in Beirut and Woman.

This is an excellent collection which includes all of his Working Class Hero album. My only complaint is Don't Walk Away is missing from this collection. Other than that it is a well rounded set and a great addition to your collection.

Pérez Prado compilations have suffered from the haphazard inclusion of poor transfers of some songs alongside pristine remasters of others. The good news is that the 50 recordings in this collection benefit for the most part from the gradual upgrading of the Pérez Prado masters. As an overview for the novice, "Legendary" has a sound quality and a choice of songs that will broaden this artist's appeal. But there is bad news: Pérez Prado had a penchant in later years for re-recording his popular tunes in new styles, turning his mambos into cha-cha-chas, dengues and twists to keep them fresh. Whether or not that tactic worked, compilations often ignore the true mambos in favor of the re-recordings, and that is unfair to the first-time listener. "Legendary" goes so far as to include both the 1949 and the 1959 recordings of "Qué rico el mambo" ("Mambo Jambo"), but in many cases only the newer non-mambos made this collection. As bad as that is, it is worse that, rather than include the #1 hit version of the 1958 smash "Patricia," the 1959 re-recording is included. And then there is the ultimate annoyance: "Why Wait," the B side of "Patricia" and one of the best cuts the King of the Mambo ever recorded, appears in a ridiculous 1967 re-recording rather than in the original. A compilation of 50 tracks should have included the original version of "Why Wait," which has NEVER appeared on CD. (A version with a twangy guitar overdub absent from the original single appeared on a BMG "Space Age Pop" collection and a Rhino "Cocktail Madness" compilation, but that is not what I am after.) I had hopes that the overall quality of this compilation would mean that someone had seen the light and brought out the ONLY significant Pérez Prado recording not yet issued on CD, but I was disappointed yet again. Apart from these gripes, there is a lot of value packed onto these three discs, so if you have no Pérez Prado CDs, this is probably a good set to get. You will, however, need to buy such others as "Cuban Originals" or "Lo mejor de lo mejor 2001" to get at the true genius of the man.

Keb Darge has a reputation for dissing the whole P-funk Parliament music as not being real & true funk. The funk that he seems to think is the real deal is funky music that is in the style of the Meters.
He should realize that he's out of his mind for that opinion.
There are all kinds of funk out there.
This is a real good cd regardless. Right now it's way over-priced on amazon. The only cd's I would spend over $50 for are rare and obscure Prince cd, because he will go down in the history books right along with Mozart, the Beatles, and Beethoven.

I'm American and I know who Keb Darge is. He's quite pretentious about what constitues funky music and what doesn't. His criticisms of Parliament-Funkadelic are absolutely ridiculous. If you keep in mind that he's a white guy from Scotland it does put things in perspective (hey look, I'm a white guy too). Regardless, this is an excellent funk compilation, probably one of the best out there (and there are tons of them). This is definitely the best one out the whole Legendary Deep Funk series. A few years ago, I sold almost all of my CD's and records (I needed the money at the time) but this album is one of the ones I had to hang onto. If you want to hear good obscure funk, buy this CD!

I doubt there are too many people outside of London who have heard of Keb Darge. For those who don't know, he has one of the deepest funk collections around, and his feel for the purity of a style that pounds out honesty and soul is unrivaled. This compilation takes you threw a few tracks he has picked up over the years through ruthless dedication, and overall, they just make you feel good. They make you smile. They make you move. He's gotten me into a form I have fallen in love with, and I feel priveledged to have seen him live a few times at small clubs. If you don't know anything about funk, and want an amazing introduction to it, spend the money. The man knows what's good.

          The Legendary Pink Dots have been together now for 25 Years and of all their albums, which there are so very many-of which 90% of them I've heard, this is by far the greatest album in their career.
          I tend to like their more pop-melodic tracks than all of those crazy ambient atmospheres they like to create. This is not only one of their more melodic CD's but also one of their more brilliant lyrically written albums. Lisa's Seperation, The Talent Contest, A Month After, Blacklist, and even the twisted Methods. I adore all of these tracks on this album and I'm sure that there are many of you out there who are unaware of their brilliance. If you're curious enough to take a chance on them, this is the one to begin with.

          Anyone familiar with LPD knows their trademark sound and style. The Golden Age is a great example with its storyteller lyrics (e.g., Lisa's Separation, The More It Changes), bouts of insanity (e.g., Regression, Maniac), and pure gloominess (e.g., Our Lady In Cervetori, Hotel Noir).

          Looking for those beautiful LPD strings and harmonic melodies? You'll find it in peaks throughout this album, the strongest being the hauntingly beautiful Our Lady In Cervetori. The 2 instrumentals--Stille Nacht, And Even The Vegetables Screamed--aren't just "filler" tracks; they're well worth a listen. And tracks like The More It Changes and The Month After are that classic LPD sound at its finest.

          The Golden Age is accessible (new fan friendly) enough to be one of the "starter" albums I recommend along with Any Day Now, Island Of Jewels, Curse, and Asylum. And for existing/long-term LPD fans, The Golden Age is quite simply a classic. If it's not in your LPD collection, definitely add it.

          The Golden Age is one of my favorite LPD albums due in no small part to the inclusion of the 4th track: Hotel Noir. This is a shining example of Kaspel's lyrical genious. The story told in this track is perhaps the most moving I have ever heard. The music on this track also displays the fine talent of the rest of the band. It sets the scene remarkably well. This album is from the early nineties but is timeless in its style as are the LPD themselves. Anyone who enjoys finely crafted music with brilliant lyrics filled with subtlety, irony & sarcasm and that tell of madness, despair & longing will love this band and this is a fine album with which to start!
