I LOVE THE BOSS!.......2006-11-06
This album has it all -- campy singing tunes by MF, the classic Caravan, an MF indian tune, Matt Wallace singing, and FINE original by Tom Garling.... all of the things that MF fans have grown to love -- all on one CD. It's great -- you must have it in your library if you don't have it already. I mean, Maynard's picture on the cover is reason enough! :)
MF Horn - RIP.......2006-09-09
I grew up with Maynard and to this day recognize his MF Horn albums as some of the best recordings made, period!
With his recent passing I have elected to get acquainted with his later recordings.
In short, this is a fabulous CD and stands proudly along any of the original CSB/Sony MF Horn albums. Great tunes, excellent production and the band does swing!
RIP - my friend, mentor and inspiration.
It does exactly that.......2006-07-11
This is one of the "new" MF recordings that I have purchased recently, not having had any Maynard albums for over 20 years. It's a great Big Band style, different from the Chameleon/MF Horn recordings we used to wear out in high school. I know this recording is already over 10 yrs. old now, but I'm very pleased to hear the great music that Maynard is still putting out. Along with Brass Attitude, this is a great CD to play for my 11 year old son, a 3rd year trumpet/cornet player. This is how it's done. Now if I can only get MF Horn 2 and 4&5 (Live at Jimmy's)on CD I'll be really happy. Yes, it swings!
Yes! Maynard at his "swinging" best........2000-03-24
I very rarely give anything a 5 star rating. This however was such a wonderful supprize that I just couldn't resist. His "small" band sounds huge, and really drives the music. Listing the highlights would take up too much space, however you MUST check out his version of Duke Ellington's "Caravan". Maynard, thanks for this collection. It really reminded me of why I love Big Band/Swing music.
the best little big band ever?.......1999-03-31
listen to this album and try to forget the size of the ensemble. Sounds like a big band, not an expanded combo. Tight rhythm, great horns (maynard, of course, but his support staff is superb). only thing better than this album is seeing the group live (if you get the chance, do it!)

Maynard still ROCKS!.......2005-03-03
This has become one of the most prized CD's in my collection. One quick correction of a previous reviewer : Larry Foyen does not play lead on this CD, Scott Englebright does. And man, does he have the chops! This whole album is nicely woven and tightly played, with plenty of stratospheric trumpet for the true Maynard enthusiast. Scotty is one of the very best lead players MF has ever had, even going back to the Stan Mark days. Sorry Matt Wallace, but I could do without "She was too good to me" and the bad vocals, but the rest of this compilation is A ++. And at 70 + years old, all I can say is.. You GO, Maynard!
Pretty good, Maynard still has it for sure!.......2003-09-28
*Special Note: I'm reposting this under my own name since the original was mistakenly posted under a different one, I did in fact write this review myself. My mistake for putting in the wrong name.*
Maynard has to be the coolest Canadian ever. Such an enthusiastic player, even at age sixty-eight, when this performance was done. "You Got It" is a pretty nice opener, it's energetic to say the least. However, the best performance on the album is easily the following track (in my opinion) Dizzy Gillespie's "Manteca". What a great rendition, Maynard goes absolutely nuts! There is also great trombone and alto saxophone soloing. "The Vibe" is a hint at laid-back Maynard, he plays with a flugelhorn here and sounds nice, using his upper register effectively in the places it's best suited to be. "Cajun Cookin'" is a cool Denis DeBlasio arragement but honestly I'm not really wild about it. It's nice but not my favorite. The chart of "Milestones" was the huge disappointment, however. I had played through this chart and loved it, but this recording was sub-par. The saxophone solo is too long and Maynard should've done a lot more with this tune than the short harmon mute solo and screaming at the end. I expected a lot more. However, the lacking of the "do" at the end is great, look at the liner notes for reference on that. Matt Wallace also comes up with a nice vocal on "She Was Too Good To Me", and the trumpet section comes with some nice screaming headed by Larry Foyen. The new "Birdland" is decent, although not on the level of the original, but you have to love the ESPN Sportscenter ending. "Blues From Around Here" is a classic. The whole band swings like crazy on this tune, which sounds like it's based on the changes to "Watermelon Man". Maynard goes crazy on here, and Don Zank swings on piano. The performance ends with a fast remake of "It Don't Mean A Thing", the famous Duke Ellington classic. This was a good way to end the album.
Overall, if you're a Maynard fan, this is one that is worth picking up. Maynard is playing amazingly well, especially for someone of his age. Whoever said he sounded terrible is totally wrong! I'll admit Maynard had some tone trouble on Live In London but none here. However, as an overall product, this album is not as good as Live In London, in my opinion. However, these are both worthy buys. If you're new to Maynard, get acquainted with some of his work with the Kenton band, and then some of his 60's and 70's bands.

What a terrible review below........2003-05-01
This is a spectacular album and to think that it is live is that much more impressive. The man is now 75 and still tours and does "alright" with his band Big Bop Nouveau. I saw him at a show where all the trumpet players came out into the audience and Maynard followed suit only to blow them all away with his fat, screaming tone. Maynard always was, still is, and always will be the man. By the way that show was last year. So if you like a really good band with a really good leader this is a must have.
Maynard sounds terrible!.......2003-02-14
Too bad Maynard Ferguson didn't stop recording back in the 70's. His solos sound the same on every single track on this recording "One More Trip to Birdland". His tone is terrible! Too many years of playing in the stratosphere. I am reluctant to give this recording any stars, however, Maynard has an extremely talented band behind him. Too bad Maynard wouldn't let them play more - and consider retiring. Sorry, Maynard, your music with Stan Kenton is amazing - however this album was not worth my money!

In his 70s, Maynard shows that he's still got it!! The first 3 songs on this CD especially kick [...].... I LOVE Waltz for Nicole.... who ever heard of a Waltz that kicks?? :) Tom Garling is an exceptional arranger. And Maynard wails on I Love You! He doesn't get any better... Just love love LOVE this CD!!!
High quality music, high quality production.......2006-01-01
One of the best sounding big band record I have ever had the pleasure to listen. Highly entertaining big band music, very nice program, spectacular arrangements, breathtaking solos, everything perfectly clear, the stage very 3dimensional, tones extremely realistic, olographic imaging, unbelievable dynamic, warm and wide vision but bright sounded when it's needed (a truly balanced and wellmade recording). It really seem to have a true big band in your music room. Maynard is still in splendid shape in this recording from 1998 and if you consider that a lot of his best albums are still not released on cd, this one becomes a musthave for serious Jazz listeners. Many applauses to Concorde for the quality of this production. If you have an hiend system this is a cd you have to own, it doesn't come much better than this. Your neighbours will note when this cd will arrive in your hands (I don't know how much happy they will be). You will pump up the volume with a big smile on your face, believe me.
Great!.......2005-03-09
Maynard Ferguson is still great, I've seen him twice recently. I'd have to say this is a great album of his, perhaps better than his live stuff. (I know I'll be rammed for that one) I don't know this is more jazz to me than his other stuff, Just Friends is a classic tune that he nails, its great. The Lip on the other hand is a scatting tune performed by Denis Diblasio, he does a great job. Overall I'd have to say this is a very upbeat cd. This is probably my best big-band cd with good sound quality. I'd recommend it!
P.S Please Check Out My Other Reviews!
It's brass, it's got an attitude, and it's MAYNARD!!!!!!.......2001-09-25
I have been looking for this record of Maynard for quite some time. When I found it, I could have jumped through the ceiling of the music store.
This has a lot of Maynard's old tricks. Denis sings the "The Lip", which is a clever song about MF. Knee deep in rio is very purky, and waltz for nicole is a very cool balad.
If you don't have this, and you are a die-hard MF fan, it's a MUST BUY!!!! (Denis DiBlasio scats!!!)
An Enjoyable, but Different, Maynard!.......2000-12-24
First of all, I like this CD. The music has a smooth and sophisticated feel, and the solo's are at times amazing. Maynard has always had the ability to surround himself with wonderfully talented musicians. This CD, however, is a diferent direction for Maynard. Played in a more traditional jazz style, the songs here show a side of Marnard Ferguson that you rarely get to hear.
Through most of his career, Maynard has depended a powerful brass/big band sound to drive the music. His interpretations of songs usually had a strong melodic base, and then would allow the soloists to take off based on the melody. This CD is almost the opposite. The solos's drive the music, and the result is wonderful. A mix of old and new music, the music depends less on Maynard and more on the band. My favorite pieces are "Just Friends" and "Caruso". "The Lip" is an interesting song with vocals by ex-Band member Denis Diblasio.
Again, overall I enjoyed this CD. If I would compare his most recent work I would say this is my second favorite behind "These Cats can Swing", a more traditional Maynard Ferguson CD. I would recommend this not only to any Maynard fan, but to any traditional jazz fan as well.
