    Album Description

This Nottingham, England sextet features charismatic, intense vocals combined with instrumental density and eclecticism to create one of the most interesting rock experiences heard in recent years. Think Psychedelic Furs, Sonic Youth, and a touch of The Stooges, add insane volume, and you've got the idea.

5 out of 5 stars Best album of 2004.......2005-10-26

None of these reviews so far have done this album justice. You have never heard anything like this before.

The song structures are phenomenally laid out so the songs start off soft and melodic and slowly build up in tension. After a few minutes the tension has built up to a certain high point, and background fuzz comes in. At this precise moment the track has hit it's peak. Seachange then drops the hammer and starts rocking out, though the song has the same mood as it started off with. The transitions are so masterfully handled they will blow your mind. No other album out of 2004 can even touch this.

5 out of 5 stars All Around Awesome CD.......2004-05-23

I bought this CD on a whim. I was at Tower records, at the listening stations, having never heard of these guys, and was sold before track 2. Other CDs Ive picked up the past 3 years without ever hearing of the band and loved them and they later became big or at least known are Thursday, The White Stripes, Motion City SOundtrack, Ben Kweller, Brand New, The Libertines, Rooney, and Bayside. This one is definitely right up there with all of em.

    4 out of 5 stars UK hard rock...with a violin.......2004-04-27

This is British hard rock, which means that it's heavy, but with more of a pop sensibility and song structure than found in U.S. nu-metal, a genre which has devolved into a series of white-guy acts rap-screaming over guitar noise. In UK hard rock these days, the emoting isn't necessarily limited to, "I'm really pissed off." (See also, The Cooper Temple Clause.)

I caught this band live at South by Southwest 2004, and they were excellent live performers. Imagine heavy, hard rock that is at the same time quite atmospheric...a wall of guitars, an angry vocalist...and a chick on an electric violin. "Time Out" Magazine probably said it better than I ever could: "...soaring, spellbinding anthems...with visceral and excalating power, Seachange are a hypnotic proposition."

Tragically, the studio recording does not quite do justice to the live act. It doesn't convey the fullness of the band's soaring power, but there are some solid tracks here, particularly in the first half of the CD. As the album wears on, the songs start to run together. But hey, it's a cheap disc, so you don't have to listen that far.

    5 out of 5 stars a shot of matador.......2004-04-22

on first listen I liked the unusual arrangement, the minor key punk inclinations. I thought of pavement, six by seven, sonic youth also broken social scene back to mogwai.

Lyrically it rocks. The lay of the land as it is.

    5 out of 5 stars unexpected good.......2004-04-11

that's a pretty good album, although I didn't expect it after I first listened to it..but it develops after a couple more listenings to a very good debut-album. there are quite a lot songs which will stuck in your head for many many hours so you'll love them forever..okay, not not forever..it's not that good..but....

Dennis O'Neill is a wonderfully sensitive, intelligent singer--a tenor who varies his tone and delivery for each character. He also sings the music as written, with every dynamic shading in place. Yes, he manages high B-flats pianissimo without resorting to falsetto, and he also rises somewhat heroically to heavier moments. But there's a rub. The loud, high notes are a bit nasty--a slight wobble comes into the voice and a sense of strain is more than noticeable. His exquisite, piano beginning of "O paradiso" ("Oh land of dreams") from L'Africaine is only a sad memory when you hear the vaguely bawled high notes throughout. His "Reve" from Manon is lovely in its sustained peacefulness, and while he's very exciting in the big Act II duet from Ballo (with soprano Susan Bullock as a fine Amelia), there are always those unfortunate "big" notes to reckon with. Perhaps that's why the gorgeous Pearl Fishers duet, with baritone Anthony Michaels-Moore, ends the program so successfully. The soft notes are more prominent than the troublesome forte ones. Perhaps this is being too picky--O'Neill is a worthy singer, he makes these arias and scenes palatable in translation (even Alvaro's music from Forza is believable), and artistry like this is a pleasure to come across. --Robert Levine

3 out of 5 stars Hot Jazz Licks.......2004-10-08

Straight jazz leaps out of this CD with crisp energy and breakneck licks. Mike Pope is a well-known jazz musician with a real gift for the acoustic and electric bass. "The Lay of the Land" showcases his talent by placing him in the center of multiple nouveau jazz masters, and effectively allows him to shine like a diamond of instrumentation.

You'd think that placing Pope among such luminaries as Seamus Blake, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Mike Stern, and both Randy and Michael Brecker would diminish his presence on an album meant to be focused on his work as a bassist. Such is not the case, because the energy and the subtle tempo shifts that issue from Mike's fingers create the vital heart beat of all of the works this album comprises.

Some of the more exciting pieces include "The First Order of Business," and the lengthy "The Lay of the Land." Each of these songs drives the spirit with activity and busy creative power, and Brecker has a lovely solo on "The Lay of the Land." Look forward to decidedly original interpretations of such perennial big band and jazz classics as "Cherokee" and "The Way You Look Tonight," both spun through the loom of hot jazz in small ensembles. Two of the moodier, slower pieces, "Essence," and "The Avid Listener" create a shift to pensive contemplation, without being overly dreamy or halting. One of the best originals crafted by Pope's subconscious would have to be the clean notes of "Climate," showcasing the bass player in a tight trio. There's a reticent new take on "The Star Spangled Banner," which seems strangely questioning and thoughtful on a standard that is often presented as self-assured.

Fans of hot jazz will find this to be a superb recording, excellent for the art show or wine tasting crowd to create an idea of energy and mood. This is not dance music by any means, but the sort of recordings that are used best to provide texture to a meaningful or creative experience. And texture is what bass players specialize in.

"Land of the Mountain and the Flood" is Hamish MacCunn's best known work. The version on this cd is absolutely wonderful. This is one of the few cd's that focuses exclusively on MacCunn. It is wonderful to get to hear a selection of his other work. The cd includes excerpts from his opera Jeanie Deans. MacCunn emerges as an extremely gifted composer. The excessive Romanticism of some of these pieces is a bit alienating for me, but on the whole this cd is an excellent tribute to Scotland's greatest Romantic composer.

Music is performed in its original settings. Beautiful choral work; four singers, two of each gender. Lacks the histrionical egotism found in so many Irish ballad recordings. Very much worth it.
