Charlie Watts.......2007-05-13
The skill and natural abities of all the group shine through the entire CD. It is a joy to listen to and my admiration for Charlie Watts grows even further. He makes his music look so easy and all other drummers sound like amateurs.
A Historical Journey Into Timeless Jazz.......2007-02-02
Take music from Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington and Miles Davis - with a tribute number to Elvin Jones, Elvin's Song - and a wonderful arrangement for Take the A Train, and you quickly understand the musical direction of Charlie Watts and the Tentet.
This jazz goes down real smooth in a swing and bebop kind of way.
Recorded in June 2001 during gigs at Ronnie Scott's, the two CD set delivers more than two hours of subtle leadership by Watts, with a band playing to the audience and the spirit of Charlie Parker heard in the sax solos.
Several numbers are from the Watts-Jim Keltner project, but it's Main Stem & Sunset and the Mockingbird (Ellington), Bemsha Swing (Monk) and Little Willie Leaps (Davis) that demonstrates the respect Watts has for the art of jazz. The band lets loose on Tin Tin Deo, as Luis Jardim delivers percussion with some sizzle.
Even Mick Jagger and Keith Richards find a place on the bandstand through the song, Faction. A rousing rendition of Take the A Train - a number that has been played before the Rolling Stones take to the stage on numerous concert tours - has the audience cheering for more.
Watts takes the listener on a jazz journey from the 1940s to 1960s, with musicians who take the history and shape it into outstanding performances in the present which will stand the test of time in the future.
Watts At Scotts is a Masterpiece.......2005-09-18
This is an album for anyone who enjoys the sounds of Duke Ellington and Peter King style jazz.Easy going and smooth with all the right textures.Romantic pieces thrown gently in the mix with the right instruments all in sync.Charlie always facinates me with his versitile drumming style.I saw the Stones Thursday night at Giant Stadium and even though he went through his ordeal with throat cancer he's a true hero with determination to not slow down. This kind of tour finishing up in March of 2006 has got to be tiring for him,but his perserverance will keep him going. This album is a must for those cold days of winter or a date. ENJOY
World's Greatest Drummer Shows Range.......2004-11-18
Charlie Watts is the world's greatest drummer. He never speeds up or slows down and is steady enough to check your heartbeat by. His punctuation and fills are sublime.
After 40 years as a Stone, you'd expect anyone to be locked-in on the groove. But as a jazz drummer, Mr. Watts shows his formidable and impressive range. I cannot image the difficulty of playing soft after years of holding steady the collossal twin musical egos of Mick Jagger and Keith Richard.
Mr. Watts's understatement here is so precise and such a joy to hear. There's not a wasted lick nor roll made for the sake of showing off.
Lest I overlook the superlative talent of his tentet, I'll simply summarize by saying they're equal to the challenge and clearly unintimidated by making music with rock royalty.
The song selection spans ballads (my favorites being "What's New," "Elvin's Song," and "Body & Soul") to swing and BeBop.
The venue, Ronnie Scotts, is sacred ground amongst British jazz lovers. Mr. Watts and Co. have done themselves proud, and we're the beneficiaries.
Classyist Stone Does it again!.......2004-08-26
I stumbled upon Charlies Solo projects some years ago and have always been amazed at how much talent this man has. This release proves no exception. Charlie Watts and his band were recorded live for this double disc set and I so wish I could have been at this show. The recording picks up on the energy that must have been in the room and the songs just feel like songs that flowed out of these guys totally unpromted. My favorite is the take on the Thenonious Monk song Bemsha Swing. Its on the first disc and it really sets the bar for the CD that is never lowered. The packaging is great as well. Thanks Charlie.

Absolutely BREATHTAKING!!!.......2003-03-02
Polytimbral,polyrhythmic,multi-syncopated music reaching across the ages allowing for limitless mental and perceptual/emotional gratifications commensurate with the listener's attendance. Or,put more simply, the more you give, the more you get.
This was my first exposure to Braxton's ghost trance music, though I've been a fan of his since 1973,(when I was an on-and -off student of drummer/percussionist Barry Altschul).I have since gotten many more GTM cd's.If you give it time and attention, this music can help you alter your perceptions and provide alternative life solutions.
I don't want to disservice Mr.Braxton by analysing or describing his sound logic- it would be limiting ,it is my perception, not his.But this is exciting stuff, the performance feels impassioned and the ensemble is top-notch.Mr.Braxton is in fine form, lovers of his playing will find plenty to enjoy.(remembering of course that he is not soloing over jazz standards-duh.)
The tentet is 2 cd's long, and dedicated to Max Roach.277 to harry partch,287 to joe frazier(both quintets),the trio to shostakovitch, quartet to betsy jolas, and the guitar/sax duet to don van vliet(captain beefheart).I find that these dedications have no small significance. This is rich, challenging music and,for me, one of the most gratifying cd's of the last twenty years.Thank you,Mr.Braxton!!
Bravo! A Monumental Achievement!.......2002-09-21
Besides being a great bargain for the price, Six Compositions (GTM) 2001 presents profound examples of Anthony Braxton's challenging and intriguing Ghost Trance Music. This music definitely has the power, spirituality, and complexity to change the way that a listener views conventions in contemporary creative music. The music is occasionally thick in texture, but that is nothing new to creative music. These are musicians who dare to think new thoughts, to push the boundaries of concepts and expand the ramifications of the music. Anyone interested in progressive, creative music should listen to these discs. They are marvelous. Anyone interested in the relationship between theory and culture should listen to these discs. The set delivers on a very consistent basis.
I disagree with some critics who claim that Six Compositions (GTM) 2001 is not the ideal place to experience Mr. Braxton's music for the first time. Why not? The GTM, including this set, is as much a product of Mr. Braxton's thoughtfulness and creative powers as any development in which he has ever participated (and yes, I love the Arista stuff too). It is as good as a place to learn his music as any,and I would also include Trillium R and Comps. 173 and 174 in the discussion as well. Again, why not? Even though the GTM has been well documented over the years, the musical investigations that comprise the GTM, while arguably sharing similar "DNA," are of themselves unique and compelling. There is probably a GTM for everyone; people just need to find what suits them best at the moment.
The great benefit of Six Compositions (GTM) 2001 is that the combinations of large and small ensembles will serve as a great introduction to and lead to an appreciation of the wonderful possibilities that are the Ghost Trance Music.
Also, the liner notes are perfectly readable and offer a great introduction to the music. Mr. Braxton likes to use compound nouns. It is really no problem once you just get used to his style.
Ghost Trance Music.......2002-09-04
Anthony Braxton is a musician who's every thought on music is important to hear. So this 4 disc set of compositions is an important release. This ensemble is one that Braxton has worked with for a while, based around current and former students from his courses at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. And I represents a genre of music that Braxton has created, called Ghost Trance Music, which has been underrecorded. The six pieces range in ensemble from a guitar and reed duo, to the longest piece on the album for tentet of 5 reeds, 3 brass, guitar bass and percussion. The variety of sonic resources should make for an interesting album, and it does, with some drawbacks.
The biggest problem with the album is in the genre of Ghost Trance Music itself. The notated sections of these pieces tend to a sameness of texture, which can make listening a bit numbing, if you don't devote alot of attention to the works. If you do, though, there are many sections of brilliant, but cerebral improvisation, some wonderful horn effects that harken back to the early jazz greats like Bubber Miley and Tricky Sam Nanton, and an overall ritual feeling, which is undoubtedly the effect that Braxton wished to create. But this is not an album that is an easy listen straight through. I find that I can only take, at most, two discs at a sitting.
The longest piece on thealbum, the tentet, is also the most impenetrably for me. The Ghost Trance Music notational patterns can seem relentless in this work. Briefly stated, the Ghost Trance Music tends to block chord ensembles which march forward in steady pulses, and then change abruptly to faster and slower pulses...all with the same block chord texture. This is not Braxton's multi-line music...at least there's not much of it. As a result, the texture can wear a bit. However, the improvised sections have much to recommend them, and are at times, quite lovely.
The other pieces on the album fare better, in my opinion. They are shorter, and there is more focus on contrasts of texture. Standouts include Composition 287 for quintet, which has some marvelous piano work by the percussionist, Gino Robair; Composition 276 for trio, with marvelous electric guitar work by John Shiurba, and Composition 289 for saxophone quartet. All of this is worth hearning, and repays repeated listening. I've gotten more out the fifth time I've listened to the works than I did out of the first!
Don't expect much help from the album's liner notes by Braxton. Mr. Braxton is a very smart man...much smarter than I am I think! But his notes are so full of jargon that he has created himself, as to be almost unreadable, at least in the original form. To approach Braxton's musical ideas more fully, I find I have to go to interpretors, like Graham Lock. Without that help, I'm completely lost, though it is obvious to me that there is deep compositional, intellectual and spiritual thought behind the music.
That being said, this is not the album I'd start with if I were new to Braxton. A better choice for the novice might be Three Compositions of New Jazz, from early in his career, or Two Compositions (Jarvenpaa) with the Ensemble Braxtonia from 1988. The later particularly is one of my favorite of all Braxton sets. The work is amazingly varied and the playing is intense.

Another Winner from the Tentet.......2004-01-03
Don't let the title mislead you. This is definitely not music of the 1920's as you imagine it to be. Indeed, the tunes selected and arranged by Rob McConnell for his latest Tentet CD all have strong and enduring melodies. In addition, they are given the full-out, straight-ahead jazz treatment by McConnell, who has been, without question, one of jazz's most interesting and inventive arrangers over the past 30 years. One of the keys to McConnell's success is that he never fails to make his arrangements swing, and he always keeps his musicians and listeners alert with tricky tempo changes (check out "Lover Come Back to Me" and "Always") and unexpcted harmonies ("How Long Has This Been Going On", for example). Rick Wilkins, another of Canada's top arrangers contributes one excellent arrangement ("Remember") to this CD and acts as co-producer.
The Tentet excels because of the superb tune choices and arrangements, but also because of superb musicianship. These guys are right at the top of Canada's jazz and musical community. Special mention must go to bassist Steve Wallace and drummer Terry Clarke. There is not a tighter and more swinging bass-drums duo anywhere on this planet. If you've heard the previous CD's by the Tentet then you know that the solo team is exceptional - saxophonists P.J. Perry, Alex Dean and Mike Murley, trumpeters Guido Basso and Steve McDade, trombonists McConnell and Terry Promane, and pianist Dave Restivo, who especially shines on this CD. All the soloists are featured on the opening "Thou Swell" and each has a feature or two on the other tunes. Murley and Dean are an outstanding tenor team, and the lead trumpet of Steve McDade is expecially strong throughout. There is no point listing highlights, because every tune and arrangement is outstanding.
The Tentet's earlier CD's are both highly recommended, but if anything "Music of the Twenties" features even tighter ensemble playing and warmer, clearer, recorded sound. Even at this level, things can keep getting better all the time!
This is a superb 72 minute CD, and enthusiastically recommended.

"May We Keep Going" .....I Certainly Hope So!.......2003-09-27
This was a quote from Rob McConnell at the end of the liner notes for this cd. I have become a devotee of his music since I first heard the Boss Brass some years(?) ago. If you read the liner notes, besides his obvious sense of self-deprecating humor, this is a guy who thoroughly enjoys playing the music....even after a 32 year career!
The music still has the rich harmony of the Boss Brass in the arrangements......a real mellow sound even though this is a much smaller group. I think this is exemplified on "Speak Low" and "Theme for Jobim". As usual, the current Rob McConnell band is composed of excellent musicians.....dig the sax feature "Two Bass Hit" wich really cooks! "Ian Leaps Out" also moves along at a good clip!
My personal favorites are "Maybe September", a beautiful ballad written by Percy Faith which is finally getting some recognition, and the Billy Strayhorn composition "Lush Life" featuring the flugelhorn of Guido Basso.
I suppose with only 10 musicians there was no need felt to credit soloists on the various cuts, but not knowing either tenor sax player I would have appreciated that.
This is really good jazz and if you are a fan of Rob McConnell or appreciate a band with great soloists, this will be a welcome addition to your collection.
Superb Recording.......2001-09-24
Rob McConnell has put the 22 piece Boss Brass on hold for a while (let's hope temporarily) and has been writing and playing recently with his Tentet. The group consists of 1 trumpet, 1 flugelhorn, 2 trombonists, 1 alto sax, 2 tenor saxes, piano, bass and drums; in other words a stripped down Boss Brass. While I confess that I miss the sounds of the bigger sections this is a superb recording from any perspective - writing, playing, and recording quality. The musicians are some of the top Canadian players and the ensemble blend they achieve is strikingly beautiful, whether on up-tempo burners such as "Old Devil Moon" and "Ian Leaps Out" or ballads such as "Lush Life." McConnell's arrangements are, as always, tasteful, swinging and unique enough to grab your attention, without ever resorting to anything "off the wall." Perhaps the most satisfying arrangements are on the mid-tempo pieces such as Mulligan's "Theme for Jobim" or "Speak Low" (a particularly effective arrangement featuring bassist Steve Wallace.) Just about everyone in the band gets a chance to shine in solo work, including trumpeter Steve McDade, fuglehornist Guido Basso, pianist Dave Restivo and alto P.J Perry. Drummer Terry Clarke provides superb support on every track. Unfortuntely, the liner notes fail to distinguish between tenorist Mike Murley and Alex Dean, which is a bit frustrating when you're trying to figure out who's soloing, especially on "Two Bass Hit." They are both wonderful players, though.
Anyone who appreciates arranged modern jazz in the bop idiom with lots of solo space will enjoy this fine recording.

Masterpiece.......2005-08-12
Teddy Charles's best album. In addition to a great line-up of soloists, it is the composers (Charles himself, Giuffre, Brookmeyer, Waldron, Evans, Russell) who make this a thoroughly interesting, classic collection. No routine soloing. Very good sound. Unfortunately, three extra tracks which appeared on an earlier Atlantic CD are not included here. Still: excellent value!

Product Description
"Featuring composer Anthony Braxton on various saxophones and clarinets; J D Parran on alto clarinet and piccolo; Roland Dahinden on tenor & alto trombones; Andre Vida on various saxophones; Brandon Evans on saxophones, bass clarinet and flute; Gwen Laster and Jacqui Carrasco on violins; Ted Reichmann on accordion; Joe Fonda on bass; and Kevin Norton on drums, vibraphone and glockenspiel.
"Composition No. 193" was recorded at the Knitting Factory "What Is Jazz?" Festival in June of 1996. "Comp. No. 193" has a quick and most exciting repeating line when it begins. One of the highlights of this disc, as well as many of the other Ghost Trance works is the formidable playing of master-percussionist Kevin Norton. Downtown accordion hero, Ted Reichman, is also a source of strength here as he is often the one that brings that pulse back into view. In one section, bassist Joe Fonda and trombonist, Roland Dahinden, duo together, exchanging intense dialogue, as the rest of the ensemble play the line that has shifted and evolved into another variation of the opening theme. Some sections remind me a marching band, accelerating and then de-accelerating. Both J.D. Parran on alto clarinet & piccolo and Roland Dahinden on trombone are in amazing form, taking a number of strong solos and bending the pulse as it evolves into something else. What often happens is a sub-section of the ensemble will play that repeating line as the other players lay out. Slowly the other players will come in to add to the line, alter the line or solo on top of the line. There are also sections when the waters calm down to a somber section and then build back up as the pulse starts to build and expand once again. Mr. Braxton himself takes a few astonishing solos as the rest of the ensemble move in waves around him, as well as playing inter-connected lines with his stream of notes. The way this entire 67-minute piece unfolds and evolves and stays in flux, had me on the edge of my seat throughout." - BLG
