A Great Talent On The Rise.......2006-06-19
With a hypnotic mixture of r&b and smooth jazz.Singer, songwriter Ms.Maysa Leak comes at you and just takes you away with a secial style all her own.Her voice is wonderful and smooth and on top of that she's beautiful. This lady is loaded with talent. And she seems to have great musical taste.Something that seems to be lacking in some other young female singers of this generation.I'm very much impress with this album and I listen to it a lot. With songs like Unexpectedly,Hypnotic Love,One More Chance,Smooth Sailing and Where Do You Go?.Is what makes this album such a standout. And I plan on buying a lot more Maysa albums in the future.
Sultry, smoky r & b/soul over smooth jazz grooves and feel good lyrics.......2006-04-16
Since this is my first Maysa album I read many of the other listener's glowing reviews first so that I may offer something different to the collection of opinions. Most strikingly Maysa's voice resembles the legendary Roberta Flack, as well as Anita Baker, and Lalah Hathaway. Track 5 (Where Do You Go?) sounds like a song that could have been on a Julie Dexter album, and if you aren't familiar with her, she is another fine jazz vocalist with a more Diana Ross range rather than the alto of Maysa. You will be reminded of Luther Vandross on track 7 and
10 (All day Long and One More Chance)not only in the instrumental track but in Maysa's vocal phrasing. The latter half of the album swings very much toward contemporary r & b and many of the background tracks sound like samples and loops you may have heard from some other artist on some other album. Overall many of the songs sound similar in arrangement and theme, but Maysa fans, don't be furious, if it wasn't for her gloriously rich vocals, I would not have listened so many times to rate this album one star below the highest rating. Regardless, you will find this a good album and love many of the songs, without a doubt!
(3.5 stars) Maysa Sails On With Latest Release!.......2005-09-07
Maysa has been one of those artist who has been constantly looked over when you go to the store and look in the music racks. Yes, she's the artist who you'd typically say "I've never heard of her" and yet you probably have heard her. She was once the female vocalist in the jazz fusion group Incognito. She was the voice behind songs like "Deep Waters" and "Still A Friend Of Mine" for all you jazz listeners out there. She has had four solo albums, the first three being the self-titled album Maysa, All My Life, and Out Of The Blue respectively. Now she returns with another jazz-influenced album entitled Smooth Sailing.
The first single from the album is the title track "Smooth Sailing," a good representation of what the rest of the album sounds like. "Scat World" features her alongside another relatively unknown songstress named Ledisi. The best song on the disc hands down is "All Day Long" with solid background singers and top notch production that few others are able to manage to get for their own songs. This same style is continued on the song "Where Have You Been" and "One More Chance." But there is some fun elements as well on songs like "So Very Hot" and "Hypnotic."
Although not her best work, Maysa still proves that she is the best at what she does. But even though her songs sound overtly R&B, she is usually placed in the genre that most appreciates her....Smooth Jazz. Despite the flip-flopping of categories, Maysa is hands down a wonderful vocalist and Smooth Sailing is a voyage that you can still enjoy without getting seasick.
Can't get any better than this. CAUTION: Ear orgasm involved........2005-08-30
I fell in love with Maysa's voice when she sang with Incognito in the early to mid 90's. I still cant get over songs like "Deep Waters" and their version of "Don't you worry 'bout a thing"
Ever since Maysa has launched her solo career, I've been watching it like a hawk because her voice and the music production on her albums have been nothing short of perfection. This album is by no means any different. In fact, I believe its her tightest album to date. I didnt think that was possible after hearing songs like "Out of the blue", "Head to the sky" and one of my personal favorites "Everything", on her last album. However there is something that is so mature and mysterious about this album. She is constantly redefining herself while staying true to her unique style of music. She walks the fine line of r&b and jazz to perfection. Although every song on this album is good, Standouts include "Smooth sailing", "Soul Child", The ear orgasmic "Where do you go?", The window down, sunroof open, driving down the interstate jam "So very hot", and the r&b crossover "Where have you been?"
As long as Maysa makes music, I will be buying it. I hope that this isnt her last project. Also, for all you Maysa fans who like good music [...] The album is called "Seasons of life".
Great music.......2005-08-24
This goes on my favorite list by Maysa. A great CD to put on and chill to. Once again she has proven herself to be great solo artist.

Customer Reviews:
Superb.......2001-04-10
This CD is awesome. Lynn Cannon's piano playing is reminiscent of Pat Matheny in terms of laying down the scales. I just love this CD. I heard a few notes of a song on the radio and I was pulled in, just like that. I bought the CD sight unheard and it has turned out to be the most satisfying CD purchase for me all year. This boy is bad!

Customer Reviews:
Texas Tenor and a Hammond B-3 Pioneer Swing Out !.......2000-04-30
Wild Bill Davis made the organ swing. Jimmy made it groove and grind. When Hammond/Tenor Trios come to mind, probably names like those, and Jack McDuff, Shirley Scott and others come to mind. If youre really hip to the Hammond, heck you might even remember Milt Buckner playing with Illinois Jacquet (a name that often comes to mind alongside Arnett Cobb), but Ill bet you dont know the organist on this one. - - Austin Mitchell. Yet Austins career predates almost all these cats. He was one of the first - - and very few people have heard of him, mainly because he kinda stayed local in Philly and didnt record much. In fact, this may be your only chance to hear this pioneer in action. - - Its a very different style than your used to. I had the pleasure of not only meeting Austin Mitchell, but him coming to my pad, sitting down at my organ and blowing me away, completely - - especially in his ability to connect chords and actually play the pedals (contrary to popular rumor, Jimmy Smith style organists use their left hand to play bass lines. The pedal, if used at all is secondary. For the old timers, this was kind of sacreligious, because they needed that left hand to play those thick and greasy chords. Listen to him comp ! ! !)
This album swings majorly, however, the Hammond Playing is the vibrato heavy Hammond of a long bygone era. Youll have to get used to it, but once you do you will enjoy this heavy swinging blowing session. (There is a bass player incidently, but never mind that... this is still some heavy B-3 playing and blowing.) So stick a coin in the juke box, turn up the heat and get ready for some toe tapping soulful blowing ! This album will put you out of breath.
