When you put the word "masterpiece" in the title of your debut double CD, you'd damn well better be able to back it up. Thankfully, Cody Chesnutt has the goods. This precocious, sex-obsessed, spaced-out, spiritual singer is practically bursting at the seams with talent and ideas. With The Headphone Masterpiece, he delivers a homemade, lo-fi stew made of smooth funk, forceful rock, and gritty hip-hop, all topped off by the sweet-crooning voice of a great soul singer. Across 36 tracks, Chesnutt invites you into his psyche, and it's a unique journey to say the least, wending as it does from the weightiest of spiritual concerns to that morning's hard-on. So is it a masterpiece? Well, not quite. Even Mr. Chesnutt must believe that he's got better music still in him. But The Headphone Masterpiece is an ambitious opening salvo from an artist who may well take his place in the celebrated lineage that extends from Hendrix and Sly Stone through George Clinton, Prince, D'Angelo, and so on. Once he learns to harness his surging electricity, Chesnutt may offer us a true masterpiece--or even a few of them. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Lives up to its title.......2007-04-01

This is another CD I just had to check out after hearing Chesnutt (apparently, it's written "ChesnuTT") sing on Dave Chappelle's Block Party (Unrated Widescreen Edition). He has a very good voice and, given the company he was keeping on this DVD (not to mention his inspiring guest appearance on The Roots' Phrenology), I was curious as to why I hadn't heard more of him or seen any of his videos on MTV Base.

One listen to this CD and I had my answer. He's all over the place. Not in a bad way but I could immediately see why it might've been very difficult for label execs or commerical radio (or more importantly, for listeners) to categorise or pigeon hole him. In this day and age, such categorisation or pigeon holing seems essential if commercial success is the primary goal.

Sometimes using his natural voice and sometimes a falsetto that while never off-key or flat, always sounds incredibly raw, the man leads on a complex journey covering 36 songs spread across 2 discs, through soul, neo-soul, electronica, hip-hop, spoken word, rock and some of the most sexually explicit lyrics I've ever heard. And I've heard quite a number. The second disc is "enhanced" and I assume this means it does something when you put it in your PC but after the Vivian Green Vivian debacle a few years ago, I will not be attempting to find out. The music alone is more than enough for me, thank you.

"The Headphone Masterpiece" is a very ambitious title for any CD but I think ChesnuTT lives up to it here. Especially when you consider the fact that he's "written, arranged, composed, performed & engineered (recording & mixing)" every single song. If you can stay with him while he takes you over musical valley and hill, I believe you'll find it quite a full and enjoyable experience. You definitely need an open mind though - in more ways than one. This is more Van Hunt than Ne-Yo or Omarion.

Personally, I love it.

5 out of 5 stars musical genius.......2006-12-20

I have gotten so many people hooked on this man, we cannot wait for another solo album. Cody Chesnutt is a vocalist comparable to the smooth voice of Marvin Gay and the soul of Ray Charles. His guitar rifts and beats he comes up with are by no means simple, either. The Headphone Masterpiece is acoustic, it's good beats, it's soul, it's psychedelic, it's obscene, it's loving, all on a single album. The first time I listened to it the whole way through, I'll admit, I was trying to place the man in a single genre but couldn't and it frustrated me at first, but after listening to it more, I see it is of its own genre and I appreciate the good mood it puts you in instantly, and I love it all. Now that's me, I know people will be people and not like it in its entirety but some gateway Cody Chesnutt songs to get you hooked that you'll be sure to enjoy include: "If We Don't Disagree," "When I Find Time," and "Look Good in Leather." Spread the love, it's just that good.

5 out of 5 stars with or without headphones...this IS a masterpiece.......2006-12-04

i would say an instant classic.

sits up on the shelf along-side: Prince, Marvin, Stevie, Sly , Jimi and John Lennon.
(and much more soulful than thee ole' Lenny Kratiz way)

5 stars. own it and be all the more hip.
(also, check out the Dirtbombs)

5 out of 5 stars Sheer Bravado!.......2006-07-21

This album is a TRUE masterpiece for it's raw and brash feel. Cody is a great song writer, he's a talented musician, and he's got a "soulful" voice that's really an unbeatable combination. It doesn't get much more soulful then "No one will." I hope he made enough money off this album to release something soon!

5 out of 5 stars Really Good But............2005-12-13

This is a really good cd but I'm a bit sad. All the songs except Get a Clue come from cds that Simon and Milo already had. They used to be called Prozzak. They combined the best songs from Hot Show and Saturday People on to one cd. Some songs that I really like from the earlier cds didn't get put on the new cd. I really liked I like To Watch (Milo's Night Out) from Hot Show as well as Hot Show and Shag Tag (You're It). They should have put those songs on the cd instead of lame Europa and Strange Disease. Those 2 songs have nothing on I like To Watch (Milo's Night Out), Hot Show, and Shag Tag (You're It). But they're still good songs. Other than that little disapointment, this cd rocks!

3 out of 5 stars ok,but not my best cd........2005-11-09

I was upset when I got the cd.My dad had to take off three songs, for cus words, and bad leracs.RIP OFF.The ony good songs are "get a clue"and"infatuaation".

4 out of 5 stars Great Album, Hot Show and Saturday People are better!.......2005-04-11

Simon and Milo is a mix of songs from a band called prozzak. Prozzak released two albums, Hot show, and Saturday People. This album combines the most catchy songs from their previous albums.
Here's a breakdown of their songs.
1. Pretty Girls,Saturday People, 5/5, A Very Catchy Song
2. Ombolasire, Hot Show, 5/5, Another catchy song that is very addicitive to listen to.
3. Sucks To Be You, Hot Show, 5/5, A Song about how bad simon is treating a girl. Very good song
4. www.nevergetoveryou, Saturday People, 5/5, Another really great song. The computer voice in the beginning can get quite annoying.
5. Get A Clue, New Song, 4.5/5, Their newest song is a great song, but is lacking something...
6. Be As, Saturday People, 5/5, This song may feel out of place but is a great song and sends a positive and some what negative message towards kids.
7. Infatuation, Saturday People, 5/5, Weird at first but gets really good.
8. Strange Disease, Hot Show, 5/5, One of the best ever made.
9. It's Not Ne It's You, Saturday People, 3.5/5, Nothing great, but it's not a bad song. It might get annoying to some people.
10. Europa, Hot Show, 3.5/5, Average Track.

Overall this is a great album, but missing key tracks from hot show such as Mediterranean Lady and Tsunami. Missing some from Saturday People too as Lonely American nights and Feed The Night

2 out of 5 stars Get Hot Show and Saturday People.......2004-12-22

First of all, I will get this off my back. Ashley, you're a child. Wow, so what is Prozzak says words that don't get censored on TV. Get a Clue sucks, its the worst track, because it's so Disney. It's not bad though, but the other tracks are better. I rather not buy this one, I already got Hot Show and Saturday People. I have always liked Prozzak, since their beginning in 1998. Disney ruined them. They even changed how Milo looks. Ashley, you're still an ignorant child.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEGINNING OF THE PATTI PAGE LEGACY!!!.......2004-12-30

I was still sucking my thumb when these songs were recorded (most of them anyway) and what a find! I've waited years for SENTIMENTAL MUSIC on CD! Sentimental Music was the flip of WOULD I LOVE YOU. The song was never listed on the Billboard charts, but was on the Cashbox charts for 10 weeks or more, along side a recording of the song by Bing Crosby. Other "chart hits" included in this collection are SAY SOMETHING SWEET (with Vic Damone), SO IN LOVE and MY JEALOUS EYES.
You are in for a real treat as you listen to the many styles of songs Patti sang early in her recording career from jazz oriented tunes like WHAT EVERY WOMAN KNOWS, I'VE GOT SOME FORGETTING TO DO, FIRST TIME I KISSED YOU,THERE'S A MAN IN MY LIFE, READY SET GO, GIVE ME TIME and IT STARTED ALL OVER AGAIN to early covers of R&B like TOMORROW NIGHT, ALL MY LOVE BELONGS TO YOU and the screamin' ONE SWEET LETTER. Patti also gives Broadway and the movies a go with CAN'T HELP LOVIN THAT MAN, MY DREAM IS YOURS and JUST ONE WAY TO SAY I LOVE YOU. It's great to hear some of Patti's sides with Vic Damone (maybe someday we'll have a Patti duet collection as she recorded with Frankie Laine, Rusty Draper and Vic while on Mercury).
For Patti fans this is a must collection. It fits beautifully with the Flare collection SO IN LOVE.....there are a few duplications but between the 2 collections we have most of Patti's early singles....not just the hits which are available on numerous collections.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable CD of Patti Page's Early 78 rpm Single Records .......2004-11-20

This CD is imported from the United Kingdom and includes 25 songs that were released as 78 rpm singles early in Patti Page's career. Most of the songs are new to many of us fans who may not have been old enough to hear and remember them when they were first released.

I enjoyed the jazz-flavored tracks such as "Twelve O'Clock Flight," "Ready Set Go," and "Give Me Time." The tracks with Vic Damone are delightful, especially "Yes, Yes, Yes." The songs in the CD, except for the last few, are songs from the 1940s and are sung in that distinctive 1940's style. "Dear Hearts and Gentle People" is a 1949 cover record of the Bing Crosby hit. The next year he covered Patti's million selling record, "All My Love."

Bernie Wayne's "Sentimental Music," of all Patti's single records, is just about the most commercial sounding one that never quite became a hit. Unfortunately, it happened to be on the flip side of the hit, "Would I Love You." It may have become a two-sided hit if her next record, "Mockingbird Hill," were not released so soon after it.

These recordings represent an interesting and important part of Patti's long recording career. It's great that someone has put them together in one CD that I hope is available to fans for years to come.

This CD is 10 times better than DavidZ's first one, Surf 60, which I like a lot. The lyrics are hip, and the beat is hopping! Since I don't dance much anymore, I like to clean my house top to bottom while listening to this! Thanks DavidZ!

This is the best! It cannot get any better
then this. The music is perfect for working
out or just sitting around. I did not think
I would like it but it is good. Return of the
Typewriter is very interresting. Defiently buy
the first cd too "Surf 60" All in all, Good cd.
