Guitarist John Abercrombie has been one of those ECM heritage artists over the years, helping the label define its cerebral and sometimes austere vision of creative jazz. Abercrombie's playing is clean, melodic, and subtle--he reaches beyond jazz to incorporate bits of classical, folk, blues, and rock. Here he's complemented by an amazing group--drummer Joey Baron, bassist Marc Johnson, and violinist Mark Feldman--for the third time. Though busy in a number of different contexts, the group members are wholly in sync with Abercrombie's vision, leaving plenty of space for the music to breath, prodding when it lingers, and generally adding elegant accompaniment throughout. The group is almost tango-like in its ability to build songs passionately through tasteful restraint. Of the ten tunes here, takes on Ornette Coleman's "Round Trip" and Bill Evans's "Epilogue" are telling signposts of influence, but this is a band that presses on, creating beautiful music that lives in the here and now. --Tad Hendrickson

Album Description

The Third Quartet is master guitarist John Abercrombie's 25th leader recording for ECM. This third album from his current quartet with Mark Feldman, Marc Johnson and Joey Baron is the strongest yet from this band, in its seventh year of playing together. The repertoire on the new recording includes eight new tunes from Abercrombie, plus two classics of new jazz - Bill Evans's "Epilogue," and Ornette Coleman's "Round Trip."

John Abercrombie is one of the most influential guitarists in jazz history. His oeuvre on ECM not only includes his own discs, but also recordings with Charles Lloyd, Jan Garbarek, Kenny Wheeler, Jack DeJohnette and others. His band mates have also played some of the biggest names in jazz and music: Pharoah Sanders, John Zorn, Bill Frisell, Dave Douglas, Bill Evans and Johnny Cash. Each have an impressive ECM roster or recordings, including recent leader albums from Feldman and Johnson.

5 out of 5 stars John Abercrombie just gets better.......2007-05-15

I have listened to this man's guitar playing since he played with Billy
Cobham. I am not a guitarist. I can only say he has an incredible sense
of touch & dynamics. I recently had the pleasure of seeing him play with
this quartet in Birdland, NYC.They were fantastic. I thought 'Gateway II'
was one of my favorites of his. This is way up there (all this groups
recordings come highly recomended).from 'Cosmic Chicken (somebody please
release that)to Arcade, the organ trios, directions,etc..listen to this
man & the people he surrounds himself with. You wont EVER be disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars UNFORTUNATELY, NOT THE BEST QUARTET.......2007-05-04

The music on this release is meandering and uninspired...too much violin, not enough guitar. I really don't know what the appeal of a violin on a jazz album, especially with 2 other stringed instruments, has for some but for me it's grating. If you want to hear some INVOLVING quartet music, try the 1st quartet from the 70s (QUARTET, ARCADE or M) which unfortunately ECM, maddeningly, refuses to re-issue on CD (strangely, a gap in Abercrombie's catalog that may remain that way). Some of them can be found on Japanese imports but at premium prices. WHY? Who knows but John's in a rut here ... for some exciting recent Abercrombie, try STRUCTURES, a trio release from '06. Otherwise, pass on this.

5 out of 5 stars John Abercrombie's Return To ECM.......2007-04-20

John Abercrombie has recorded prolifically for the ECM label since the early '70s. His output has been very thoroughly documented, while at ECM, he also performed as a session player on countless albums. Most notably with Kenny Wheeler, Ralph Towner, Colin Wolcott, Jack DeJohnette, Charles Lloyd, among others. His own compositions and guitar playing are very melodic and lyrical. His improvisational playing is some of the best out there. He can pretty much do anything on the guitar. He's a virtuoso in the truest sense. While he's technical master on the guitar, he is also a very textural player. He often shifts moods to match what the piece of music is doing. Abercrombie, quite simply, is one of the greatest jazz guitarist of the last 30 years. His popularity, however, is somewhat baffling to me and at the same time it's really a shame that more people don't know about him. I can honestly say he's influenced my own guitar playing. Abercrombie is a VERY underrated jazz guitarist. "The Third Quartet" is Abercrombie's first album for ECM in 3 years.

"The Third Quartet" picks up where 2004's "Class Trip" left off. However, the music here is more refined and this is simply because this particular quartet has been playing together for 9 years. This music is very hard to describe. I wouldn't classify it as free jazz, because there is structure to the music, but I wouldn't necessarily call this music bebop either. What I would call it is chamber jazz. It's a deicate balance of classical and jazz. The jazz aspect of this music is obviously within the improvisations, but the music follows more in the lines of classical. This type of jazz is something Abercrombie has been working on for many, many years. The instrumentation on this album as with the groups other two albums is quite unique: guitar, violin, bass, and drums. Mark Feldman plays violin and is one of the better violinist I've heard that can improvise in a jazz context. His ideas are always interesting and melodic and they add color to a piece. He definitely is one of the best jazz violinist I've heard. Someone like Regina Carter needs to look at what Feldman is doing and take notes. He's the new jazz violinist that people need to be aware of. Marc Johnson, on bass, has been around for a very long time. He has played with so many musicians, but I think his best early work is with pianist Bill Evans. Marc has also released some very fine albums under the ECM and Polydor labels, most notably the album "Right Brain Patrol" remains one of my personal favorites of Johnson's. Marc always provides great support to his bandmantes. Joey Baron, on drums, is one of the wildest and most original drummers of the last 15 years. He's been an active member in Bill Frisell's band and has been apart of John Zorn's group Naked City and has also played on countless John Zorn albums. Baron's work with Masada, John Zorn's group that blends traditional Jewish music with jazz, has been a very rewarding listening experience. Baron's style is one that is in constant motion. He doesn't stay in one spot to long and yet he provides this group with what it needs: a driving force to propel it.

"Third Quartet" is a good place to start exploring John Abercrombie's later work. It has all of the naunces and textures of an Abcercrombie album but with more of a chamber jazz leaning. Very highly recommended.

Following hot on the heels of their enormously successful collaboration for The Lion King, Elton John and Tim Rice have once again culled their talents to create another Disney contemporary musical, based this time on Verdi's opera Aida. The album, recorded by some of the biggest talents of pop, country, and R&B, features songs from the stage show, which recounts the well-known tale of a love triangle further complicated by slavery, royalty, and the armed forces. John duets to great effect with country crooner LeAnn Rimes, the enchanting Janet Jackson, and the lovely Lulu of To Sir with Love fame. Lush and lively, the soundtrack hits a hoot of a (decidedly not highbrow) high point with the infectious pop of the Spice Girls warbling the merits of undergarments on "My Strongest Suit" ("Always wear underwear/Anytime, anywhere"). Lenny Kravitz funks things up with "Like Father Like Son." Shania Twain's husky emoting makes a fine pop ballad of the brief "Amneris' Letter." "Not Me" chronicles the goodness of love as Boyz II Men coo dreamily, their harmonies nestling into John's sumptuous score. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!!!.......2006-09-07

I'm so impressed with this album for several different reasons.
3) It's Elton John
2) I loved all but two of the songs!
1) I usually hate the original broadway cast albums and movie soundtracks. They don't do the songs justice. They usually have chopped up versions of the songs and include unnecessary dialouge.

I'd love to see every musical (broadway or movie) done this way!
I appreciate the b'way versions, but I don't want to listen to them in my car...

4 out of 5 stars good variety and feeling.......2004-06-24

This is a very good CD. "Written in the Stars" is an extremely emotional song, and it is my favorite on the album. I would like to see the show on Broadway, but I have to say I don't think it can be too much better than this CD

2 out of 5 stars Sour Concepts.......2003-06-29

It takes so much to try to get a musical to make its way upon Broadway. Sometimes you really need to understand how to make it really happen within the passion of the storytelling music. In that case with Elton John, he nearly seemed to make it with Aida. While the music for Broadway always seems to have at least something completely mgaical and a dash of power in it. Sometimes, you really need to understand it, to make it happen, and others don't see it from the start. Although Elton John has had great music for years, at least once in a era, something goes a little flat.

The 1999 Aida, was not a studio album from Elton, but a preview from what was happen on Broadway. The various artists record contains so many different artists in the record including Tina Turner, Boyz II Men, Dru Hill, and the upcoming Heather Headley. Before Heather made it as a singer, she made it right here in Aida, on this record. The only decent song that was a hit was Written In The Stars, which Elton performed with Leann Rimes. The song was also the last song Elton cracked Billboard's Top 40. Still, there really wasn't a lot of enjoyment within most of the record, and it fell into a sleeper. Considering that Elton is already planning on making another smash musical on Broadway, hopefully he'll do better with the concept record.

When it does come to making it on Broadway, it isn't really anything exciting, unless it truly is a smash, and Aida is a smash on Broadway, just not the record. Still, if you're a die hard fan of Aida, buy this record. Otherwise, it could be a hitless miss.

5 out of 5 stars Living Elaborate Lives..........2002-11-02

Aida was Elton John and Tim Rice's baby, providing a concept soundtrack album before even setting the stage on fire, the tracks are generally sweeping show ballads.
Elton teams up with several lovely and talented ladies, in LeAnn Rimes, Janet Jackson, and Lulu. "Written In The Stars" could be a vocal gladiator battle, the way LeAnn and Elton sing it. Janet and Lulu prove themselves as more mellow duet partners.
Kelly Price makes "The Gods Love Nubia" her own, the song is tied up in soul with her voice being smooth as silk. The far too short "Amneris' Letter" shows off Shania Twain's voice to perfection also. Pop culture phenomenon the Spice Girls turn "My Strongest Suit" into the most obvious pop stomper of this set. Another strong point is Heather Headley's solo "Elaborate Lives". A rich ballad, Headley recently embarked on an R&B singing career with the track "He Is". The legendary Tina Turner provides a fiery perfomance, her track being the powerful "Easy As Life" with Angelique Kidjo.
Duds are also present, Sting and Dru Hill's tracks are admitted stinkers. James Taylor, Boyz II Men, Sherie Scott, and Lenny Kravitz also deliver perfomances on the album. This album is well put together, with strong tunes and a short-list of superstars presenting them. A fun buy.

5 out of 5 stars REMASTERED RELEASE OF LLOYD WEBBER'S FIRST HIT MUSICAL.......2007-04-18

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is Andrew Lloyd Webber's first staged musical work and his first staged collaboration with his best lyricist Tim Rice. The very first musical they wrote together, called `The likes of us', didn't reach the stage at that time and was put there for a single special performance in 2005, luckily, captured on CD and also available here at Amazon.

With `Joseph', it all began when in 1967 Lloyd Webber and his friend Rice were commissioned by the head of music at Colet Court School, London, to write a religious concert for the school choir. Joseph was first presented in 1968 and, after further performances at St Paul's Cathedral and the Roundhouse in London, and the Edinburgh Festival, opened in the West End in 1973. It wasn't much of a success, however, until Lloyd Webber bought back the rights to it in the early 90-is, reworked it and put on stage a very successful production that has been put in many other countries in the world and filmed for a special DVD.

The plot takes motives from a well known biblical Old Testament story of Joseph, the youngest son of Jacob, patriarch of Israel, and the coat of many colours that Jacob gave to Joseph as a sign that he is the special one among his sons. Joseph's older brothers became jealous and sold Joseph to be a slave in Egypt, telling their father that he's been killed by a passing goat. After being imprisoned by his equally jealous master, Joseph helps the pharaoh in solving his enigmatic dreams and becomes his first adviser who saves Egypt from the great famine. Back in Canaan, Joseph's brothers and father are starving and so the brothers go to Egypt where food is in abundance. Joseph recognizes them, but not vice versa. After he learns them a lesson because of their past behaviour, Joseph is reunited with his brothers and father in Egypt.

This is one of those Lloyd Webber shows that are aimed at everybody, the young and the old (just like `Cats' or `Starlight Express'. The songs are mostly pop and a merry note can be found in most of them. Also, this show is supposed to be fun, so there are numerous musical styles in it. For example, there is a country song that the brothers sing; at the other point they sing a French chanson with the French accents. The pharaoh sings like Elvis and one song is in a calypso tone. Overall, it's a nice whole of diverse songs and singing styles. Tim Rice has written his funniest lyrics, blending beautifully with the score. The most notable songs are "Any dream will do" and "Close every door" sung by Joseph and the big number "Jacob and sons" .

This London cast recording features Jason Donovan, the Australian pop singer as Joseph and Linzi Hateley as a female narrator. Donovan's voice isn't as strong as that of the American Joseph Donny Osmond, but his voice has the boyish charm that Osmond lacks. Hately's soprano follows the speedy tempo of her songs with ease. She hits all the high notes without problem and remains one of the best Joseph narrators to date. The children choirs add a special touch to the songs.

This is a remastered and improved release of the 1991 original CD. This means that it has resolved the main problem of the past, i.e. the bad sound. Now we hear everything with crystal clarity. The CD comes in a nice slipcase, with a separate libretto and a booklet with new production pictures. All this is a significant and welcome improvement.

The flashy production of Joseph can be seen at the DVD of the same name with Donny Osmond playing the lead. Joseph remains a part of Webber-Rice trilogy that cannot be overlooked.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful JOSEPH recording.......2007-03-05

Of the recordings of JOSEPH I've heard, I consider this to be the most wonderful and characterful recording of this Lord Lloyd-Webber musical. Osmond offers us all a rich portrayal of the eponymous dream-teller, filled with presence, but Donovan captures more subtleties of the character. Donovan conveys more wide-eyed and youthful innocence in his portrayal of Joseph and turns in a wonderful performance, capped by his renditions of the beguiling Any Dream Will Do and the pathos of Close Every Door. Donovan is well-partnered by Linzi Hateley as a charismatic and winning Narrator. Yes, I know you'll argue that the late-lamented Laurie Beechman virtually owns the role with her superior lung-power but Hateley engages the listener and makes the role her own. The superb line-up includes David Easter in an overripe performance of the Elvis-styled Pharaoh, and one can hear the little touches of humour he brings to his portrayal. The ensemble features a strong line-up of Brothers, and Nicolas Colicos as Reuben and Johnny Amboi as Judah make the most of their solos in One More Angel and in the Benjamin Calypso. Philip Cox gives a wonderful solo in Those Canaan Days (though Jeff Blumenkrantz is probably more memorable). To have it remastered makes it better than ever, especially with an improved libretto booklet despite some errors. Highly recommended to those who want their first recording of Joseph.

4 out of 5 stars SOME GREAT MUSIC!!!.......2007-01-14

This is a great CD if you are doing this musical for your school play. I liked this CD because it had some great music and had pictures of this musical, and a packet full of lyrics to the show. The guy who's palying joseph(Jason Donovan) had a stict londen voice which sounded good but it didn't sound as good as Donny Osmand or Michael Damian. Also to me, the people singing the Joseph megamix seemed not exciting and dead compared to the other CDs of Joseph. Still, if you would like the original Londen new cast of Joseph, buy it!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Of Gilbert And Sullivan.......2004-03-15

At the end of the 19th century (1870's, 80's and 90's) the compatible duo of librettist and composer Gilbert and Sullivan popularized the pre-Broadway entertainment of Savoy opera. These were light operas or operettas whose content was satire and comedy, full of bouncy melodies and beautiful singing, highly entertaining theatrical works staged at London's Savoy theatre. Gilbert and Sullivan did not always get along and in fact there was a time when they ended their professional relationship because personal conflicts surfaced. But they managed to create the world's most beloved light operas, over 40 of them. Their most famous are what I call the Big Three- The H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates Of Penzance and The Mikado. Other works include their first hit Trial By Jury, The Yeomen Of The Guard, Princess Ida, The Gondoliers, Patience and several others. A standard signature of Gilbert and Sullivan was in the colorful cast- a comic actor with a special kind of baritone voice, a canary-like and sweet-voiced coloratura or lyric diva, a mezzo soprano with strong chest register and a lyric tenor as the romantic hero. On this album, English conductor Sir Charles Mackerras, a popular figure in the classical music scene and opera, guides the Chorus and Orchestra Of the Welsh National Opera in generally well-delivered performances of excerpts from the operas The Mikado, The H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates Of Penzance, Yeomen Of The Guard and Trial By Jury. Although I feel that the recordings made by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, with Isodore Godfrey conducting and starring the best cast of the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire- the singers of the 60's and 70's- tenor Phillip Potter, soprano Valerie Masterson, baritone John Reed, Donald Adams and mezzo soprano Christine Palmer. Their version of the Pirates Of Penzance and the Mikado far outshine the Welsh National Opera in technical mastery and vibrant tone color.

But these are fine excerpts. Especially appealing is the famous and cheerful "Three Little Maids From School Are We", a trio that imitates Japanese style melody. Most of the Mikado does this, for it was inspired by Japanisme or the new fashion in Victorian England- everything Japanese, from prints to paintings to poetry. Gilbert and Sullivan simply "Japanized" their English operettas. The Finale "For He's Gone To Marry Yum Yum" is an ebullient and pleasant finale. Not featured here is the domineering and powerful Katisha, a figure who stands out in the Mikado.

The H.M.S. Pinafore is Gilbert and Sullivan's most popular work. The sea chanty "We Sail The Ocean Blue" opens the opera with appropriate atmosphere and it seems to fit perfectly with the other scene in which the Captain greets his crew and they sing his praises "My Gallant Crew..I am the Captain Of The Pinafore". A beautiful melody that seems to come out of a romantic Offenbach tune is "I"m Called Little Buttercup". The finale, not featured here, is also very engaging "For He Is An Englishman" which can almost resemble a British national anthem. The Yeomen Of The Guard was Gilbert and Sullivan's "serious opera" eventhough it remains very Savoyard. The plot deals with Tudor England and takes place at the London Tower. "I have a song to sing" makes use of what can be taken for an English ballad of the Renaissance. Trial By Jury, about the eccentric and hilarious activity of a court trial, has a sextet that although different in composition, has the sextet "Che Mi Frena" from Donizetti's Lucia Di Lammermoor in mind. All in all, an excellent recording sure to delight young and old.

5 out of 5 stars Pure delight.......2003-08-02

--Gilbert & Sullivan--
William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan were a match made in heaven, yet on earth their pairing seems even with hindsight a most unlikely coupling. Both were destined for other things, Gilbert in fact for decidedly non-musical careers. Introduced by a mutual friend, Fred Clay, the fledgling lyricist Gilbert met the military-band-leader's son Sullivan and together continued to conspire to inspire the delights of audiences from high Victorian times down to the present, as their work in musical theatre comedy continues to provide merriment throughout the English-speaking world and beyond.

--The Music--
This collection includes highlights from five of the most popular Gilbert & Sullivan operettas: The Mikado, HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, The Yeoman of the Guard, and Trial by Jury. The arrangements and orchestrations are delightfully energetic and clear; the characterisation and vocal qualities of the leads are perfect for their roles. The haughty if misplaced Lord of the Admiralty has the perfect combination of insecurity and pompous officiousness. The Plaintiff and the Defendant in the Trial are perfectly cast. This is a collection of highlights - at least three but no more than seven songs each, but this gives a good flavour of the music. The recordings on this collection come from complete performances by Mackerras and the WNO.

--Sir Charles Mackerras--
Mackerras is one of the geniuses of the twentieth century musical scene. Having a conducting career that includes the Hamburg Opera, the English National Opera (formerly Sadlers Wells Opera), and the Welsh National Opera (the performers for this piece), he has also conducted major orchestras on the continent of Europe and in the United States. The holder of many major awards and honourary doctorates, he has devoted much time and energy to the preservation and performance of eighteenth and nineteenth century music, as well the restoration of historical musical venues, such as the Estates Theatre in Prague, scene of the original production of Don Giovanni (Mackerras conducted the opera there to commemorate the bicentenary of the death of Mozart).

--Welsh National Opera Orchestra and Chorus--
The seeds of the WNO were planted in Cardiff during World War II by music lovers; the first performances occurred a year after the war's end, with Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci on the bill, with Faust the next night. Popular appeal was so great that the WNO was established, later adding choruses in both Cardiff and Swansea. The professional chorus was established in 1973, with a strength that matches the orchestra. They continue an ambitious performance schedule for recording and live events; Mackerras remains the Conductor Emeritus, as the WNO continues under the direction of Carlo Rizzi. The list of awards the WNO has won over the years is staggering - they are a world class institution by any measure.

--Other performers--
Notable singers such as Richard Stuart, Rebecca Evans, Felicity Palmer, John Mark Ainsley and Anne Howells lead the chorus with stunning vocals and clever characterisations of the parts they play. Many (such as Stuart and Evans) play the leading roles across several of the pieces of the disc.

--Liner Notes--
The liner notes give a good introduction and biographical information about Gilbert and Sullivan, as well as synopses of the five pieces presented here. It does not, unfortunately, include any information about Mackerras, the WNO Orchestra and Chorus, or the other special performers. It also does not include the lyrics to the songs. Were the quality of the CD not so great, this might cost it a star in rating.

--Overall Impressions--
I play this CD in my car, in my home and in my office frequently. It is a great sing-along work and a great comedic relief from the stresses of the day. The music is bubbly and clear; the recording quality is excellent and crisp. I recommend this to any Gilbert & Sullivan lover, any fan of musical comedy, opera and operettas, and anyone who delights in good music.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious G&S samplings abound here........2003-05-06

The first thing I should be saying is "What an infectuous G&S CD." Indeed this is, with this fine sampling of the peppy and bright Mackerras series. I know I have praised its "Mercedes-Benz quality" elsewhere on these pages, but that doesn't stop me from saying that everyone is in fine voice. This generously filled CD may only focus on five operas, but at least you can savour a reasonable choice sampling of delights from each one. Of particular interest is Richard Suart's patter-baritone parts and the soaring lyric soprano of Rebecca Evans. The selection on this disc is filled with a mixture of familiar favourites and lesser-known gems such as the female choruses in Mikado and Pirates. Mackerras is a true G&S conductor, but one who always springs rhythms crisply, and adopts peppy tempo for the fast bits. The one drawback is that this selection is far too infectuous that you'll want to shell out money to buy the full 5-CD Mackerras cycle - an incredible bargain with most of the operas fitted onto one disc each. But still, this is at least a decent G&S sampling for beginners, capped with Steven Ledbetter's copious liner notes. It will leave you wanting to say "dammit I'm going to play it again."

5 out of 5 stars Fine Intro to G&S.......2000-12-30

This is the perfect CD for those who may not be familiar with G&S, or for the initiated who want a smattering but don't have the mother of all CD changers. The difficulty with any G&S Greatest Hits CD is determining which pieces to leave off; while one could easily point to any number equally good bits, it would be difficult to argue about the quality of the choices included. The only problem, such as it is, is that after listening to it I am usually induced to go back and listen to the whole opera anyway. The Mackerras recordings are uniformly excellent. I have read elsewhere the criticism that they are too 'operatic' for light opera. If by this it is meant that the singers are too good, then I leave it to the discretion of the listener when the singing becomes too good to be enjoyable.

Purcell worked immensely hard on his score for The Fairy Queen, but the original was lost. The version on which this performance is based arrived at London's Royal Academy of Music by devious routes a century and a half later. But in Roger Norrington's hands, it emerges in its pristine beauty: you could not wish for a better introduction to Purcell's greatest stage work. Only a "semi-opera," maybe, but one studded with exquisite songs and majestic choruses. The anonymous libretto is loosely based on Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, but its inexhaustible melodic invention is imbued with Shakespearean magic. Some songs have become concert favorites, notably "O let me weep," but the joy of this double CD is that you discover dozens more, and of comparable quality. Purcell's music breathes in perfect tandem with the words and Norrington creates out of this a riveting symbiosis. The singing is pure Baroque-instrumental clarity of tone, unsullied by any vibrato, and the playing is immaculate. Comedy and pathos are both here in spades; vast space is evoked through the pairing of flutes and the echoing of trumpets. And so are all the colors of nature: Purcell's music foreshadows Vivaldi. --Michael Church

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and Lovely Music.......2004-02-06

This 'semi-opera' is one of the last works of Henry Purcell, the greatest English Baroque composer. Essentially a series of scenes with linking music, The Fairy Queen, like other semi-operas, lacks the integrity of plot and action of real opera. In performance, I suspect this work would be somewhat static, sort of a serious music variety show. The music, however, is lovely. The Fairy Queen contains some of Purcell's best vocal and instrumental work with some components that became part of the concert repertoire. Hearing all the music together is a fine experience, though the semi-opera format tends to work against the dramatic and musical cohesion which can be found in even merely good operas. The vocalists are splendid, particularly Lorraine (as she was then spelling her name) Hunt. The orchestral playing is just as good.

5 out of 5 stars If you like Monteverdi, you will love Purcell.......2002-08-21

Absolutely beautifull baroque opera! The arrangament, singing and instrumentation is superb. If you liked Monteverdi's Coronation of Poppea, it is a must to have this baroque masterpiece! It is too bad that Henry Purcell is not as widely known as Bach, because he should be recognized equally well.

Product Description

This is a new recording of selections from the Broadway musical, A Chorus Line. Composed by Marvin Hamlish, A Chorus Line is one of the longest running shows in Broadway history.

Each song appears on the album twice: once with background music and guide vocals, and once with accompaniment tracks alone. This allows the performer to learn a song by singing along with the vocals and music, then to practice their technique accompanied only by the background tracks. All songs are recorded in the original show key and show tempo.

The album is recorded in the CD+G format. When played in a karaoke machine, lyrics will appear on-screen. In a conventional CD player no lyrics will appear onscreen, however a booklet of the lyrics is enclosed in the CD jewel case. All songs are recorded in the original show key and show tempo.

Bought this CD for my daughter, who needed to sing a Karaoke-style song for her final exam in Chorus. We decided on "Dance-Ten, Looks-Three" and she wowed her teacher and classmates with her rendition. Final grade: 99! Having the original arrangements as well as the Karaoke version gave her the opportunity to really shine.

Now we play both the original arrangements as well as the Karaoke versions for fun and enjoyment.

Amazon.com essential recording

History's first great opera--the story of Orpheus descending to Hades to retrieve his bride Eurydice from the dead, only to lose her again--gets a fine performance (the best overall version currently available) from John Eliot Gardiner and his musicians. Anthony Rolfe Johnson performs the title role with all the beautiful sound you'd expect from an Orfeo; he negotiates virtuoso passages flawlessly and sings passionately without overwhelming Monteverdi's music with too much voice. Julianne Baird as Eurydice and Anne Sofie Von Otter in a gripping appearance as the Messenger are the standouts in a cast without a weak link. Everyone involved, including the chorus and orchestra, performs with such energy, beauty, and precision that even long stretches of recitative never pall. --Matthew Westphal

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great recording of a beautiful opera.......2007-03-29

Gardiner's recording of L'Orfeo is exquisite. The samples of different tracks as well as other listeners' reviews were very influential in my decision to purchase these CDs rather than a different recording of the opera. I am very happy with my new CDs and would highly recommend this product.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-05-13

This opera in performance is begun by the character "La Musica", or music personified ,who delivers a long treatise which in essence proclaims how music can do many things to us emotionally. As this "fable of music" (Monteverdi called it) unfolds we are exposed to the whole gamut of human emotions, from the most euphoric to the most dejected, presented in musical language that is perhaps closer to impassioned speech than recitative has ever been, before or since. The fact that Monteverdi's L'Orfeo has been referred to as the "first true opera in the history of music" has much to do with the fact that Monteverdi had the dramatic ability to synthesize the text, the stage and the music. And it was a favourable time historically and musically to do so. Moreover, he gave very specific directions as to how it would be put together. And what better musician to record it than John Eliot Gardiner. He has gathered together a wonderful group of soloists in every role; although some parts are small each contribution is perfection which makes for a superb offering to the listener!!!!!In addition, I think the Choral singing was so superior to some other recordings past and present. If you are an early music fan these discs will be truly "music to your ears".

5 out of 5 stars Gardiner and crew are amazing!.......2005-09-17

I am not a big fan of Gardiner when it comes to some music, for instance Bach. I just think others do it better. However, Gardiner is a fine conductor of Monteverdi and this recording shows it. If you are not familiar with Baroque opera and want to find out how a first rate crew of performers sound with a major work of early opera, this is a great recording with which to start!

5 out of 5 stars One of the most beautiful operas of all time.......2005-09-10

This recording of Monteverdi's L'Orfeo is truly a spectacular work. I didn't really care for Baroque opera before I heard this. But now Monteverdi is my favorite operatic composer. Not only is the music beautiful but the singers are absolutely stunning. Anthony Rolfe Johnson is absolutely perfect for the title role. His soft yet clear tenor voice shows the passion and the emotion that Orfeo has for Eurydice. Lynne Dawson who sings La Musica has a good voice for introducing the opera. Anne Sofie von Otter who plays Messaggiera, has such a sorrowful and sad voice for her role which makes it all the more better. But the absolute best singer on this recording is John Tomlinson who sings Caronte or the Charon. John Tomlinson is also the voice of the Commendatore in the movie Amadeus. But his deep bass makes you wonder if its at all possible to get past him. But that's not the best part of the opera. The best part about the whole recording is the choir. All the choruses are to die for, especially the chorus "Lasicate i monti." It almost makes one want to dance. But I definitely reccommend this recording to all Baroque opera lovers, even for those who don't like opera.

5 out of 5 stars My favourite recording of any Opera.......2003-08-21

Gardiner, again shows his skill with baroque vocal works. This, regarded as the first great Opera, is still one of the best. The pure singing style of the late renaissance/early Baroque is siblime and very different from Post Baroque opera writing most people are use to. The Aria 'Possente spirto' is 8 minutes of heavenly singing in Hades; here Orfeo fails to convince Charon to allow him entry to Hades, but this is one of the single most beautiful pieces of writing for voice I have ever heard.

One can only thank Silva Screen for releasing a Tribute album "2001: Music from the Films of Stanley Kubrick", featuring just a handful of films and scores from writer/director Stanley Kubrick......but what an impact they have made on audiences everywhere over the years...his shoes are not easy to fill in the world of film making.

Did I mention Peter Sellers manifesting his talent enough for three roles, which included a U.S. President in "DR. STRANGELOVE, OR HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING ABOUT AND LOVE THE BOMB"(1964), besides Sellers we have Sterling Hayden(crazed General) and George C. Scott(gum chewing insanity), but Slim Pickens steals the show with his wild ride on the "bomb"..."THE KILLING" (1956), "PATHS OF GLORY" (1957) and "SPARTACUS" (1960), an original true story of a gladitor(Kirk Douglas) who leads other slaves into rebellion against a powerful Rome in 73 B.C...actor and executive producer Douglas was magnificent in the film, with brilliant Kubrick directing...outstanding score by Alex North..."LOLITA" (1962), "2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY" (1968), "A CLOCKWORK ORANGE" (1971), master film maker Kubrick pulled out all the stops on this one, Malcolm McDowell(sadistic punk is funny fierce psychopath) a cult following with memorable scenes..."BARRY LYNDON" (1975), adventures of an Irish gambler whose transition from innocence into the pit of aristocracy in the 18th Century...Ryan O'Neal stars, never better in a role..."THE SHINING" (1980), we know Jack Nicholson can go off the deep end, but in this film(he's completely off the charts), can think of no other actor that can pull this off..."FULL METAL JACKET" (1987)...quite a line up from one of the industries leaders in film making, and the scores that pulled them off.

Hats off to The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Paul Bateman, Nic Raine and Mark Ayres...Crouch End Festival Chorus, conducted by Bateman...James Fitzpatrick (producer), Reynold da Silva (executive producer)...and the many soloist Tomas Lerst on fiddle, Vaclay Skyora on tin whistle, Zbynka Solcova on celtic harp, Gareth Williams on harpsichord and Jaraslava Eliasova on piano...and a big thank you to Silva Screen for keeping all of us "film-score-buffs" in a happy mood...gotta love it!

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad, but need a second album..........2007-06-24

How can you have an ACDC tribute album without Highway To Hell. The music on this album is very good, but is unfullfilling without the aforemenioned number. I encourage them to make a second CD with more ACDC tunes on it, to really cover all the bases.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent CD!!!!!!.......2003-12-19

I think that the reviewer that gave this CD a single star has not heard this CD because:

1. It is an excellent CD
2. The guy who did it, did the Coldplay CD
3. The site he gave is the Record Label that this CD is on and this CD can be bought there

I have listened to this CD over and over again and it is one of my favorite string tribute CDs. I own all of the CDs that this group has put out and if you want to see a list of all of the CDs they have done, you can check out their String Tribute Forum at:

i respect the whole neo-classical thing, but this cd is bad. sounds like somone sequenced the songs in their synthesizer. check out http://www.thetributeto.com/acdc/ . they perform their tributes, and do it well. i haven't heard their ac/dc tribute, but their other tributes (linkin park, 311, coldplay) are awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Totally Suprised!!!.......2003-09-01

I read about this CD on an AC/DC Fan site and they had a link to purchase it here. I bought the CD without hearing any clips or anything. So, buying it sight unseen, made me feel a little aprehensive.

Well, when it arrived I couldn't wait. I took it with me to work and played it in the car on the way. WHAT A GREAT CD & A GREAT IDEA!!! I love this CD! After hearing how well done this CD was, I decided to do something special for my wife ....and .... I took the next day off from work (which was a Friday) and prepared a wonderful steak dinner while my wife was at her job. I got a really good bottle of wine and I set the table with our finest table settings ... Candles lit and everything prepared ...When she got home, I had the candles burning, the lights were out, the table was set and I started the CD.... KAHPOWW!!! She freaked completely out! Needless to say, we had a wonderful time and what a way to romance my Rock & Roll Queen!!!

We've been fans of AC/DC since the 80s and this is probably one of our favorite AC/DC CDs, now!

I would suggest this CD to anyone who loves AC/DC and wants to add some spark to their romance .... We have candlelit dinners a couple times a month now and this CD is the main attraction!!!
