Wow!.......2006-11-17
I wouldn't really call myself a Rachelle Ferrell fan but after really listening to this CD, I have to say I am now. I think she wayyy overdoes some of it but even then, her control is absolutely unbelievable. I honestly don't know many artists today or since that could match her.
My favorite track is "My Funny Valentine." Of course its been reheated many times by many talented artists. The odd thing is that Rachelle delivers a fairly tame and classy version when I expected exactly the opposite.
The best track is "I can explain." The vocal command she displays on this track are second to none. Only Patti Labelle and maybe Whitney Houston come to mind when trying to come up with comparable voices. She seems to effortlessly go from in Me'shell Ndegeocello to Minnie Ripperton on the same track without forcing it. Don't get me wrong, I know I'm makin some serious statements but I don't make them lightly. Rachelle is extremely underrated. Take a listen. I mean reallllly listen and you'll see what I mean.
Ferrell Live.......2006-07-10
Multi-talented Ferrell is at her pristine best on this live recording. Although her studio albums show off her diversity, none of them capture her true, six-octave vocal range like "Live at Montreux". This is one of only a few live recordings where the listener actually feels present at the show(s). A must own for all jazz enthusiasts.
Amazing!.......2005-11-10
I can not describe the great ability this woman has to transform her voice into an instrument. She has one of the most amamzing voices I have heard in my life.
I purchased this cd, after hearing a little of her first cd, which I also loved, but while on a date a friend of mine played
"I Can Explain" off of the cd and it almost brought tears to my eyes and after purchasing the cd, I can not seem to stop playing it. I instantly ran to find out when I could see her in concert and to my surprise she is going to be in the DC area today. Sadly enough, I won't be in attendance but I can only imagine the showcase of talent she will display at the show.
This cd is def. a must for any Rachelle fan.
Rachelle does it again........2005-08-23
I can not step away from this album. It is a must have for anyone who appreciates a great voice.
AWESOME, BY ANY STANDARD.......2005-04-20
If you like the human voice and all it can achieve, you cannot but stand in awe after listening to this record, which shows what this woman can do with that instrument that is her voice. WOW !!! In this recording of a 1991 live concert at Montreux Jazz Festival, to which she was invited as some sort of back voice to artists of great and well deserved fame (Al Jarreau, Chaka Khan and others), she must have certainly stolen the show after her demonstration of vocal prowess & ability.
It is not only that she could really convey all the sentiment that the lyrics intended to... it will be the sheer power of her voice what will blow your senses off. Though sometimes her interpretations might resemble the effect of vocal fireworks, she does not overshadow either the spirit or the melody of the song being sung, which is a fortunate achievement, to say the least.
While nearly all of the songs in that CD are real treasures, in my opinion, the highlights of the whole CD are three songs, tracks 5 ("My Funny Valentine"), track 6 ("I Can Explain") & track 7 ("I'm Special")... and you may add "Me voila seul", a song written by Charles Aznavour which she sang as beautifully as it may get.
I'll bet you will feel all the electricity, all the exhilaration that such crowd felt back then, when she finished singing "I Can Explain", a dark, deep, extraordinarily heartfelt song of her own, which she not just only sang beautifully but also playfully where most singers simply would have given up, after reaching the highest note possible...
Hats off to her & her god-given talent !!!!... I simply wish I had been there then... ;-)

Album Description
Legendary Irish guitarist Rory Gallagher played the renowned Montreux Festival on five occasions, spanning his breakthrough years in the mid-seventies right up to the year before his tragic early death at the age of 47 in 1995. This CD brings together material from the shows in 1975, 1977, 1979 and 1985 to create the definitive Rory Gallagher live collection.
Customer Reviews:
Sadly missed.......2007-03-01
I agree with the others - not as enjoyable as the DVD but this is Rory on all cylinders. The abuse, by the way, was liver trouble, and he died of an infection after a transplant.
You have to buy this. Other treats that I have reviewed are Montreux DVD, Rory Live (Rockpalast) DVD, Taste Live at the Isle of Wight CD (Johnny Winter didn't even come near and I remeber everybody saying he blew Jimi "tuning problems" Hendrix off the stage (as did Procol Harum with Robin Trower). Legend has now submerged what really happened.....) and the first album, Taste CD. I will review On the Boards, Taste's second album, shortly: I have just bought it for the third time in 37 years and I am staggered at how mature and clever Rory is on this fabulous collection. What's going On? has a solo that will blister your paintwork, and his saxophone on On The Boards is a revelation. 21 he was. Buy all of these or The Great God Zorg will make you listen to Joe Satriani and Steve Vai for the next 1,000 years. You have been warned.
A refreshing dose of Rory blues .......2007-01-11
The man had all that is good and admirable about rock music. Honesty, real passion, musicianship, a true love affair for the music and the instrument, qualities that are practically lost today in a time when "Best Of 2006" lists are filled with people that no-one will remember by the time of the "Best Of 2007" lists. And this really shows all over this set of Rory's live recordings at the Montreux festival over the years. It's incredible that there is not one filler in this compilation that reminds us what a huge guitar-god Rory could be if he was a bit more "marketing oriented". A must have and not only for Rory completists.
Great live record of his work from Montreux.......2006-11-10
Next to the Irish Tour this is my favorite Rory Gallagher. The first couple of cuts are not very well recorded with some amp noise and poor recording. Other than that it is great. I love Philby and this is a good live rendition. Very sorry he abused himself so much that he left much too early!
All about the sound.......2006-08-03
I have the DVD of this and it is one of the greatest DVDs ever. I like the CD but the sound quality on some tracks is not what I expected. Some tracks are better than others, the stuff from '79 sounds great. I suppose Irish Tour, Stagestruck, and Live in Europe have spoiled me. It is a must have though just because its Rory.
The Blues Have Never Been the Same.......2006-07-29
Look People, if you are looking for blues, this is the place. I have'nt even heard this yet. And I don't need to. Those who read this and have it in their heart will know what I'm talking about. Rory was a legend. He was so, because of his unique style and his dedication to his craft, and even more so for his ability to repell the temptations of the business in which he was in. Of all the music that is out there for us to listen to and enjoy and scrutinize, Rory still shines as an icon of the "roots" from which we all flourished as listeners. He played, he played extremely well and he played for us, and all that he asked in return was a smile. There are few of his fabric around today. Unless you are a dedicated follower of fasion, you will agree, that anything this man did in his life is worth more than a brief listen. So don't just listen, absorb! Absorb until it hurts.......then you'll know what I'm talking about!!!!

It's not the familiar, fiery playing of Stevie Ray Vaughan that tips listeners off that this set's first disc has captured an extraordinary moment in modern blues history; it's the jarring, rising chorus of boos that accompanies it. As with previous musicians as disparate as Dylan and Stravinsky, Vaughan's willful tweaking of staid genre conventions initially infuriated purists. Though few could have imagined it at the time, Vaughan and company's July 17, 1982, show at the Montreux Jazz Festival (included here in its entirety) ignited not only a brilliant career, but a widespread revival of the blues as well.
David Bowie was there that night, but he was not booing. He secured the Texas guitarist's services for his smash Let's Dance album on the spot, nearly a year before Vaughan would make his major-label debut.
Straight from the Austin club scene, the band displays their nervous energy in a set that contains several previously unreleased/rare gems from SRV's early repertoire, including the Hound Dog Taylor romp "Give Me Back My Wig." By the time of this set's second disc, recorded just three years later, SRV was a worldwide star, the boos had turned to rousing cheers, and Vaughan's nervousness was replaced by an incendiary swagger he seemed all too happy to push into the crowd's faces. With the band (drummer Chris Layton, bassist Tommy Shannon) now augmented by Reese Wynans on organ and guest guitarist Johnny Copeland sitting in on "Tin Pan Alley," the triumphant show (11 of the 15 songs are included here) centered on the cream of SRV's first three studio albums. While some of these tracks have found their way onto other releases (Live Alive, Blues at Sunrise), the show's "Scuttle Buttin'," "Voodoo Chile," "Gone Home," and "Couldn't Stand the Weather" are released here for the first time. The set's comprehensive liner notes contain new commentary from the band's Shannon and Layton, David Bowie, early confidant Darryl Pitt, and many quotes from the guitar legend himself. All history lessons should be this riveting. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Phenomenal.......2007-05-04
These are two classic SRV shows and a good place to start for anyone just beginning to be interested in SRV (good bang for the buck and includes a solid number of SRV staples). As others have written, the first (1982) was a defining performance -- he was booed, but made the right impression on notables (including Bowie). The second show is a triumphant return.
Highlights include the 82's Texas Flood and Dirty Pool and 85's Voodoo Chile and Tin Pan Alley.
1982 performance is second to none.......2007-02-25
This is a must have for SRV fans. I would suggest the DVD as well captures a world class performance before he was even discovered or released on CD.
The 1982 version of Hideaway/Rudemood will give you goose bumps or you dont like blues.
ENJOY!
Amazing - Nicely Put Together.......2006-10-28
Hats off to Jimmie for tastefully adding to the SRV catalog. This album is a true treat for any SRV fan. The story has been well told about how SRV & DT went to the Montreux Blues Festival as was boo'ed. Afterwards David Bowie approached Stevie to play on the Let's Dance album and Jackson Browne offered the band free use of his LA studio, which produced their masterful debut album 'Texas Flood'. This frist disc is from the 1982 set and it is amazing. The second disc sees the band returning in 1985, but this time to cheering fans. This disc and many of the songs are on Alive Live. It's great to comapre and contrast the two shows and see how they had evolved during that time period. It's great that more material has been made available to the public from his early days. The CD is nicely put together with great pictures and liner notes. This is a great addition to any SRV collection and an excellent way to get to know Stevie for first timers.
get it on DVD.......2006-03-19
I bought this in a 2-DVD set for my husband this past Christmas; he is a big SRV fan. The DVD set is absolutely fantastic. The music is great, but Stevie Ray is also so awesome to watch, especially the 1985 concert. It is a must-have for SRV fans; get it on DVD, you won't regret it!
1982 Amazing. Short, perhaps his best........2005-12-03
I have been a fan since his first album. I bought this to keep the collection complete, thinking it was just another live set. The first disc, from before his first album was recorded, is a brilliant, hungry and energetic set. I understand now why David Bowie and Jackson Browne had to introduce themselves after this concert. Short, yes, perhaps his best. The second disc is great from years later. Buy this CD.

The Gang's all here..........2007-03-13
When Casino Lights came out in '82 I was 18 years old. I'd already been a fan of Sanborn, the Yellow Jackets Randy Crawford, Marcus Miller, Larry Carlton and a big fan of Al Jarreau's for 6 years. So when they got together for this baby, I was blown away and still is. Hats off to Claud Nobs for putting this together with Warner Bros finest talent at that time. I highly recommend this album. I'm 43 now and Casino Lights is still by far, my favorite "live recorded" album.
Mike Mainieri - vibes!.......2004-07-04
Love this album, but the highlight for me on this album is Mainieri's solo on "Theme from "Love is not enough"". This is worth the price alone! And of course Sanborn's playing is, as always, superb.
Blown Away.......2000-07-11
I cannot find the words to express how much I enjoy this recording. The technical ability of the artists is amazing and being a musician myself, I can certainly appreciate how demanding some of the tracks are! With two of the worlds best vocalists in Al Jarreau and Randy Crawford, this album will appeal to soul music fans as well as jazz maniacs. The highlight for me is the Yellowjackets 'Monmouth College Fight Song' which I have covered for many years in my own band and finally I own my own copy - Priceless!
Mostly Smooth, NEVER Dull.......2000-07-06
This is a WONDERFUL album. Al Jarreau and Randy Crawford really click as a duet pair on the three songs they sing together. Yellowjackets serve as a top notch backing band for most of the pieces on the album, and the tune they headline, Monmouth College Fight Song, is great loads of fun. Throughout the album, the musisians are really together and feeding off one another in the fine tradition of great jazz. The killer song here, tho, is Randy Crawford's cover of John Lennon's "Imagine". Probably the finest rendition of this song every recorded, it'll raise the hairs on your neck and land on you with every bit of emotion and feeling for humankind that Lennon put into that piece. "Casino Lights" is easily one of the best recordings in our music collection.
this is the best of the best........1999-10-13
i still have the lp since the late 70's.i'm so glad that i could find it in amazon.if you want a cd to listen in front on a nice fire in the fireplace, good wine & a wonderful lady, you won't be disappointed. i garanteed that you will have goose bumps all night long.

Album Description
Southpaw guitarist Otis Rush made his debut in 1956 with a cover of Willie Dixon's "I Can't Quit You Baby", charting his first Top Ten R&B hit. Over the course of his 50-year career, Rush has established himself as one of the premiere bluesmen on the Chicago circuit.
Often credited with being one of the architects of the West side guitar style, Rush's esteemed status as a prime Chicago innovator is eternally assured by his trademark sound. Blues fans have said that his combination of ringing, vibrato-enhanced guitar work with an intense vocal delivery is powerful enough to force the hair on the backs of their necks upwards in silent salute.
Otis Rush Live At Montreux 1986 features the Chicago blues legend at his spine-tingling best. For his first appearance at the Montreux Festival, Rush is joined on stage by fellow blues stars Eric Clapton and Luther Allison for a truly special show. The CD features nearly an hour-and-a-half of performances of Rush classics, including "All Your Love (I Miss Loving)", "Double Trouble" and many more.
Customer Reviews:
Otis Rush - Live at Montreux 1986, my review from Barcelona.......2007-06-24
Otis Rush is one of the best Bluesman of all times. He is a great singer, guitarist and composer, on the same level as the late Magic Sam and the current leader of the Chicago Blues, Buddy Guy, all of them creators of the sound known as West Side. I find this live record a jewel with only one defect, which is its sound. The bass guitar practically is nonexistent, particularly in some themes as for example the one that opens the LP, "Tops", or the one that closes the record, the brilliant Memphis Slim's "Every day I have the Blues". Nonetheless it is an extraordinary record, one of the best live records I have heard. Otis' way of playing and singing is absolutely superb and all the musicians do a great job, with powerful contributions by an inspired Eric Clapton, aka Slow Hand, in four themes, in the last of which coinciding with another top figure as Luther Allison, a great admirer of Otis Rush. The record contains several extraordinary original themes as well as versions. I want to highlight the intensity of the version of the classic Albert King's "Croscut Saw", and one of his great compositions, "All your love (I miss loving)". I'm also partial to "Double trouble", a great Blues with that Otis' feeling, and the blues which closes the record, Memphis Slim's "Every day I have the Blues", with Clapton, Allison and Rush showing their mastery, even though towards the end of the theme the sound loses some clarity. Highly recommended for all the blues and guitar lovers. I give it 5 stars in spite of this somewhat flawed sound and long live to Otis Rush.
If it OnlySounded Better.......2007-05-08
I was blown away and at the same time disappointed in this cd. The music and performances are stellar. This is superb blues, my foot never stopped tapping. The problem is and I agree with the reviewer Somebody, the sound is not excellent by any means. I have an expensive stereo sytem and it reveals the recording as very sub par. Bass lacks and the guitars are not all that clear. Albert King and SRV In Session is a notable example of a great recording. If this cd sounded as good it would be tough to beat.
RICK "SHAQ" GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "A 20 YEAR OLD TREASURE NOT AS VALUABLE AS A 30 YEAR OLD TREASURE".......2007-01-21
This is a "new" release, 20 years after the actual performance. I suppose one of life's unknown questions, along with what went on in Area 51, is why is Otis Rush's "Live At the Wise Fools Pub" (See Shaq's previous review!) recorded 30 years ago, louder and clearer than this one! Oh well! Back to the musical review. Part of my reason for rating this a 4 star as compared to "Wise Fools Pub" 5 rating, is due to the clarity and sound volume. Other than that, this is still worth purchasing. Starting with the 6th song Eric Clapton, joins Otis on stage, and that was probably the last time; Clapton ever did anything positive in the electric blues arena. His guitar playing does pick things up a bit. To me, the pinnacle, of the CD, emotionally, as well as physically, is on the last song #9, when Luther Allison, comes on stage, and gives a speech to the audience, stating (What Shaq already knew.) for the record, that Otis Rush was his idol! The fact that, that declaration of thanks and admiration, was recorded for posterity, to me was a singular point in time, emotionally. How many times in everyone's life, does just praise, come when it's too late? When the person deserving the recognition is gone! I'm happy, for Otis, and Luther, that it was stated for the record, with witnesses, for time, in- memoriam!
Great Live.......2007-01-03
This is the Otis Rush CD to get. It has great songs, and captures him live very well. The guests actually play with Otis and don't just hang out and have fun. He has a great version of Crosscut Saw. If you don't have any Otis, or much live blues this is a great place to start.
As brilliant as Rush and Clapton are, it's Allison in the end.......2006-05-25
that takes this record to places it never would have reached otherwise. Otis Rush is a major force compositionally and stylistically in contemporary electric blues, and he has the voice of genuine authority when he sings. What you get on the first five cuts are a sampling of just how strong those talents are. When Clapton comes on to join him, Rush pulls out of Clapton some of the very best work Eric has committed to recording ever. For my ears, it would be until THE CONCERT FOR GEORGE and the Robert Johnson discs that Clapton would be this incendiary again. And that's odd about Clapton: on his own, he is not his best advocate. Put him in a context like this, where he is working within the blues, and he is a very different beast altogether. Clapton tears up his counterattacks to Rush and they clearly are intensely focused on wringing everything out of each song.
That alone would be enough for any record to aspire to, but wait. Luther Allison arrives for the closer, at first without a guitar, and whips not just the audience, but Rush and Clapton into a frenzy. Strapping on his Strat, Allison takes this recording to heights clearly unaniticipated by everyone else in the room. It is a performance for the ages. But Luther was always like that. For my money, there was and remains no finer or more exciting guitarist in any discipline of music. So, as stunning as the first 8 tracks are, number 9 blows them all away.
And the best part is, the DVD is even better!

Customer Reviews:
Not Bad at All, Mates.......2006-03-31
Despite Healey's preference for playing brass and singing traditional jazz, he sure can make that blues-rock guitar sing, despite admitting to inebriation and jetlag during this live performance. It's a sign of professionalism that he can still inject passion and soul into music that doesn't otherwise inspire him.
Audiophiles may be scared off by the earlier tracks, but "Roadhouse Blues", "See The Light" and "Hoochie Coochie Man" are worth the price of the disc on their own. Drummer Tom Stephen and bassist Joe Rockman were right on top of their game here.
The tremendously talented Pat Rush played second guitar in 1999, but erstwhile feral guitarist Philip Sayce (Melissa Etheridge) appears on two 1997 insertions - Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and Healey's own "That's What They Say".
Other standouts were Robert Johnson's "Stop Breakin' Down" (featuring "Paddy" on slide guitar) and the requisite slow-blues of "Third Degree" (Boyd/Dixon). Healey's penchant for singing "visual" songs continues to inspire fans fascinated by his obviously non-debilitating blindness.
Jeff even outdoes himself on his classic interpretation of Mark Knopfler's "I Think I Love You Too Much". Although he denigrates his own songwriting skills, "See The Light" and "Can't Get My Hands on You" are ingenious compositions. The latter features a kick-ass drum solo outro by Stephen.
John Lennon's emotionally revealing "Yer Blues" begins the heavy-duty blowout, but there's a momentary breath-catcher on Koller/Hiatt's "Angel Eyes", with which Healey will forever be identified and possibly cursed.
From there on, it's almost a half-hour of full-tilt boogie! Healey may have had his fill of rock'n'roll, but fans of this outfit will fall in love with him all over again, particularly during the guitar-lick crescendos with Pat Rush on "Roadhouse Blues", where he concedes it's "not bad for a couple of jetlagged idiots".
